Celebs In Hot Water Over Their Reaction To Trump's Diagnosis
Transcript
00:00U.S. President Donald Trump stunned the world on October 2, 2020, when he revealed on Twitter
00:06that he and First Lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19.
00:11The announcement came just days after the first presidential debate, in which the president
00:14mocked Democratic nominee Joe Biden for wearing a protective mask.
00:18I don't wear masks like him.
00:20Every time you see him, he's got a mask.
00:21He could be speaking 200 feet away from me, and he shows up with the biggest mask I've
00:25ever seen.
00:26Most of the president's diagnosis was met with an immediate and swift response from
00:30social media at large, with many celebrities' reactions amplified via retweets and replies.
00:36Some of the most vocally anti-Trump celebs expressed empathy.
00:39Alyssa Milano, for example, tweeted that she,
00:41"...wouldn't wish this virus on my worst enemy."
00:44But others couldn't help but voice more controversial opinions.
00:48Several celebs said that they believed Trump's diagnosis was some sort of universal punishment
00:52for the president, who admitted to The Washington Post's Bob Woodward,
00:55he had downplayed the seriousness of the virus, which has cost more than 200,000 Americans
01:00their lives.
01:01Ice-T, for one, tweeted,
01:03"...can I say karma's a b----?"
01:05One fan took issue with the rapper's response, replying that the illness is a horrible thing
01:09to wish on anyone, quote,
01:10"...even someone you hate."
01:12Another follower retorted with their decision to no longer be an Ice-T fan.
01:16The always outspoken Chelsea Handler tweeted a photo of herself relaxing outside with a serene
01:21smile on her face.
01:22She captioned the photo simply,
01:24"...thoughts and prayers."
01:25This did not sit too well with some Twitter users.
01:28One wrote,
01:29"...Trump tests positive for COVID, the world tests negative for sympathy."
01:321990s teen heartthrob Devin Sawa frequently uses his Twitter account to share criticism
01:38of President Trump, and his reaction to the president's COVID diagnosis was no different,
01:42focusing on policy disagreements rather than personal sympathy.
01:45In a tweet, the Final Destination star wrote,
01:48"...about his racism, about his taxes, about his policy, how he's feeling.
01:52That's the order you should care."
01:54One of Sawa's followers replied,
01:55"...you people are the strangest people ever.
01:58I've never, ever seen such horrible things written by adults."
02:01Sawa responded to the backlash, replying to the criticism of his initial tweet,
02:05"...200,000 dead, but you think I'm being inappropriate for finding the irony and Trump catching
02:09it humorous?"
02:10Some celebs have raised suspicions about the timing of the diagnosis, putting forward an
02:14often shared conspiracy theory that Trump claimed to have coronavirus to gain sympathy points
02:19ahead of the next debate, or to get out of participating in it.
02:23Filmmaker Michael Moore posted a long rant on Facebook, urging his followers to think
02:27before they believed Trump's tweet about his diagnosis.
02:30The director wrote, in part,
02:31"...why on earth would we believe him today?
02:34Has he earned your trust now?
02:35No.
02:36Yet we're decent enough to not want him to be sick, to wish him well, and maybe just this
02:40once give him the benefit of the doubt because why would he lie about this?"
02:44"...it's been a very interesting journey, I learned a lot about COVID.
02:48I learned it by really going to school."
02:50Moore went on to theorize that Trump could potentially use his illness as a ploy to delay
02:54the election.
02:55While some comments praised Moore's arguments, others called the filmmaker out for wasting
02:59his time on such an idea.
03:01One said,
03:02"...oh, that's a long block of text for something as minor as a test result."
03:06Hocus Pocus star Bette Midler also touted Moore's argument that the president's coronavirus
03:10diagnosis is seemingly suspicious.
03:12She wrote on Twitter, speaking about one of Trump's closest advisors,
03:16"...just learned that Hope Hicks tested positive for COVID.
03:19Timing so interesting.
03:20I guess Trump's quarantining will mean no rallies and no more debates.
03:24Convenient.
03:25It's awful to always think the worst.
03:26But after four years of relentless lying?
03:29Can't be helped.
03:30No trust left."
03:31Like Handler, Midler also sarcastically wished Trump her thoughts and prayers.
03:36In response to a user who suggested that the president's test results should be made public,
03:40the actress replied,
03:41"...you may have something there."
03:42Midler's series of tweets did not sit well with many people, and like Ice-T, she lost
03:47at least one fan, who wrote,
03:49"...I wouldn't count on that bet.
03:50I used to enjoy watching you.
03:52You have become so unpleasant lately.
03:54Disappointed in you."
