Now We Understand Why These Celebs Can't Stand James CordenNow We Understand Why These Celebs Can't Stand James Corden

00:00Through his British celebrity talk show and film career, James Corden knows just about
00:05everybody in the entertainment industry.
00:07But not everybody in the entertainment industry likes him.
00:10Here are some of the people who seemingly can't stand James Corden.
00:15At the end of a 2019 episode of his HBO show Real Time, Bill Maher discussed high obesity
00:20rates.
00:21His solution?
00:22Make people feel bad about themselves for being overweight.
00:25Fat shaming doesn't need to end, needs to make a comeback.
00:29Some amount of shame is good.
00:31A few days later, James Corden took nearly eight minutes at the top of an episode of The
00:36Late Late Show to address Maher's remarks.
00:38So I sat at home and I'm watching this, and all I could think of, I was like, oh man, somebody
00:43needs to say something about this.
00:45If only there was someone with a platform who knew what it was actually like to be overweight,
00:50and then I realized, oh, that will be me.
00:52Corden reminded Maher that fat shaming was still alive and well, adding that,
00:56There's a common and insulting misconception that fat people are stupid and lazy, and we're
01:00not.
01:01Following Corden's plea for basic human decency, Maher fell back on his comments about obesity
01:06as a health issue.
01:07He said on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience,
01:10You can't keep eating as much as you want, and as s***y of food as you want, and expect
01:16us to cover the bill.
01:17He then went on to say that Corden, quote, missed a great opportunity to literally save
01:21lives and took the easy way out by criticizing the real-time host.
01:25In 2017, a sea change in Hollywood took place, with the Me Too movement and other organizations
01:32calling out men for decades of unchecked offenses of a sexual nature.
01:36Arguably the biggest catalyst was an October 5 New York Times story that revealed numerous
01:41allegations against studio mogul Harvey Weinstein.
01:44The entertainment industry was left shocked and reeling, and James Corden failed enormously
01:49to read the proverbial room.
01:51On October 13th, 2017, he hosted a black-tie charity gala event for the AIDS Research Foundation
01:57Amphar, and he peppered his monologue with several jokes about Weinstein.
02:01According to The Guardian, for example, he called the evening so lovely that Weinstein,
02:05quote, has already asked tonight up to his hotel to give him a massage.
02:09Then he cracked,
02:10It's been weird this week, hasn't it?
02:12Watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water?
02:14Ask any of the women who watched him take a bath.
02:16It's weird watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water.
02:19Two of the women who accused Weinstein of deplorable acts of sexual violence didn't think Corden's
02:23jokes were all that funny.
02:25Asia Argento tweeted,
02:26Shame on this pig and everyone who grunted with him.
02:29Rose McGowan called Corden a, quote, mother-f***ing piglet.
02:33Corden later apologized via a statement on Twitter, writing,
02:36I was not trying to make light of Harvey's inexcusable behavior, but to shame him, the
02:41abuser, not his victims.
02:43I am truly sorry for anyone offended.
02:45That was never my intention.
02:47In many ways, Ricky Gervais and James Corden have lived out parallel careers.
02:51Both are comedians who came to prominence on British television shows they starred in
02:55and created in the 2000s, The Office and Gavin and Stacey, respectively.
03:00Before jumping to movies and eventually hosting American TV productions, Gervais hosts the annual
03:05Golden Globes while James Corden hosts The Late Late Show.
03:08According to a source close to the situation in The Sun, the seeds of a nasty rivalry were
03:12planted when Corden played Gervais on his 2009 sketch comedy series Horn & Corden.
03:18In the sketch in question, Corden portrays Gervais as if he were cast as the Karate Kid instead
03:23of Ralph Macchio in the 1984 classic.
03:26With his interpretation, we see the fictional Gervais talking over his fellow actors' lines
03:30and even the director's constructive criticism, a pretty overt jab at the real Gervais and
03:35his propensity for interrupting people with snide remarks.
03:39In the years since, Gervais has publicly teased and criticized Corden on multiple occasions.
03:44As The Sun's source said, Ricky is now somewhat obsessed, attacking James when his jokes fall
03:49flat and poking fun of his size.
03:51For example, after Corden bombed with those Harvey Weinstein jokes at the Amphar Gala just
03:56faced days after the producer was exposed as a serial abuser, Gervais told Radio Andy
04:01that Corden, quote, "...didn't do it well enough."
04:03And at the 2020 Golden Globes, Gervais quipped,
04:06"...the world got to see James Corden as a fat c**t."
04:09He was also in the movie Cats, but no one saw that.
04:12James Corden hosted the 2010 Glamour Women of the Year Awards, and a presenter that evening
04:17was another well-known entertainer, Sir Patrick Stewart.
04:20When the Star Trek icon got to the stage, he thought it was the right time and place to
04:25lay into Corden's stage demeanor between hosting segments.
04:28Stewart instructed,
04:29When the presenters are up here and when the recipients are receiving their awards, don't
04:33stand at the back of the stage with your hands in your pockets, looking around as though
04:37you wished you were anywhere but here.
04:39Corden tried to keep the show moving, apologizing if he appeared bored, adding,
04:43"...but when you come up and present an award, just f*** get on with it."
04:46Stewart didn't get on with it.
04:48Instead, the actor said,
04:49"...from where I was sitting, I can see your belly, and that was right there over at the
04:53back of the room."
04:54To this, Corden replied,
04:55"...you can see my belly, and we can all see you dying right now."
04:59Stewart's final retort was equipped to, quote, "...cover your belly," which made Corden wince
05:04an embarrassment, but not necessarily his own.
05:07Stewart later apologized.
05:08A representative told The Sun,
05:09"...Patrick felt awful about the ugliness.
05:12He had had a drink, his new girlfriend was there, and he just got carried away."
05:16They eventually joked about the spat in a sketch for a Channel 4 charity special.
05:20Hollyoaks is one of British television's most popular soap operas, airing in the early evenings
05:25on Channel 4 since 1995.
05:27It takes place in the fictional Chester suburb of Hollyoaks and, like most daily dramas on
05:32both sides of the Atlantic, concerns the romantic and relationship entanglements of primarily
05:37young and attractive people.
05:38Ricky Whittle, best known to American audiences for his work on The 100 and American Gods,
05:45played constable and nightclub operator Calvin Valentine on the series from 2006 to 2011.
05:50During this time period, James Corden, who appeared on one episode of The Soap in 2000, fired some
05:56verbal shots at the series in an interview with Esquire, saying,
05:59"...I'd actually rather die than go back.
06:01It's f—ing awful.
06:03It just breeds p—ing, all these people walking around with this chicken-in-a-basket fame,
06:08talking about going to L.A., you know?"
06:10Whittle threw the nasty shade right back at Corden in an interview with What's On TV, ultimately
06:15threatening him,
06:16"...it's very childish that he's slating the place where he came from.
06:19The place that made him.
06:21Good luck to him.
06:22I hope he doesn't bump into us on a night out."
06:24Every late-night show has a signature schtick, a recurring comedy bit that keeps fans tuning
06:29in year after year.
06:31For Jimmy Kimmel Live, it's celebrities reading mean tweets about themselves.
06:34For The Late Late Show with James Corden, it's the host and an extremely famous singer, driving
06:39around Los Angeles in a car, singing along to the musician's own songs in a segment called
06:44Carpool Karaoke.
06:46It's Corden's most popular contribution to the culture by far, and the likes of Adele, Britney
06:50Spears, and Lady Gaga have taken part.
06:53"...how you feeling about that?"
06:54"...pretty good, man."
06:55In a 2017 interview with GQ, Liam Gallagher, the former lead singer of 90s alternative rock
07:01sensation Oasis, said that, if asked, he would not do karaoke.
07:05He even worked an apparent jab at Corden's show, Gavin & Stacey, into his response, seemingly
07:11misnaming it on purpose,
07:12"...no thank you very much.
07:14No f-ing chance, mate.
07:15With that fat bloke from Kevin and Perry, James Corden is a knobhead."
07:19When the Daily Beast asked Corden if he'd caught wind of Gallagher's remarks, the host said
07:23he had.
07:24And then, Corden offered up a sarcasm-drenched response,
07:27"...I don't know how we'll even think of carrying on.
07:30Yeah, God, what will we do?"
07:32Jack Allison wrote for Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the 2010s, and, as such, he's a member of
07:37the Writers Guild of America.
07:39In 2019, he told a story on Twitter about the time he went to a union meeting that James
07:44Corden also attended,
07:45"...I'd like to state once again for the record that I went to a WGA meeting for only
07:50late-night writers, and James Corden showed up without any of his staffers to advocate
07:55for a lower pay grade for late-night writers."
07:58That means, according to Allison, Corden apparently made a special trip to ask a trade union to
08:03allow him to decrease the salaries of his own employees at the Late Late Show.
08:08Allison claimed that Corden wanted to hire writer's assistants for 13-week stretches instead
08:12of for longer periods as contracted, full-fledged writers.
08:16By WGA rules, this would carry a higher salary.
08:19Allison went on to tweet,
08:20He was framing it positively as,
08:22"...we want to give writer's assistants a chance, so maybe there should be a lower pay
08:26grade for them."
08:27According to Allison, WGA officials quickly dismissed Corden's request.
08:31However, Corden related a different version of events on Twitter,
08:34"...I would never, ever want to pay a writer less than they deserve.
08:38Never.
08:39I love every writer on my show, and all I ever wanted from that meeting was to
08:42explore whether talented people could get a better opportunity."
08:45Despite this statement, Allison dug his heels in, tweeting,
08:48"...what I said was accurate."
