00:18spread a bit of homemade festive magic one two three each week I'll be joined
00:27by two celebrity crafters going head-to-head to make the best decorations
00:35oh it's a contest I mean I'm supposed to pick a winner aren't I together we'll be
00:44sprucing up our trees look to perfection I think I've got a bit well yes and
00:51sparkling up our centerpieces nicely so grab your glue guns and let's get
01:04Christmas crafting
01:16let the festive fun begin what do you think like the place doesn't it I think so
01:24you don't want to get done for breaking and entering
01:27that's before a sherry today I'm joined by actor podcaster and comedy matriarch Hillary Whitehall
01:37and Corrie legend Tony Maudsley ready to try their hands some Christmas creativity
01:44yeah I have to say that I feel I'm slightly more in the gifted amateur I'm excited actually because
01:51I love a bit of crafting I won't say I'm an expert when my son Jack did art
01:57projects at school I did get involved no teacher actually ever said well done
02:02mrs. Whitehall but I know they thought it well that's ten steps ahead of me I
02:07think the last time I made something almost been about five and I made a mess of it
02:11then I'm excited but I'm also nervous because I don't want to make a mess of
02:14things who knows how I'm gonna fare today fingers crossed and we'll let you do the honor thank you
02:20that's how Christmassy I'm feeling oh are you excited yeah excited let's do it
02:40everything my celebrity guests make over the next few weeks is to transform this beautiful
02:50house into a magical Christmas party venue for some very deserving people so let's crack on
02:56so are you excited very excited yes yes so have you done much crafting before a fair bit with the
03:03children and then there was a big break and now I've got grandchildren so I'm needing to hone these
03:07skills up now right I can work on that I can work on that yeah how about you Tony but crafter I think
03:12probably the last time I crafted was two years ago I decided to make my own front doorie oh wow yeah
03:19only I mean it started off this big and it finished off this big you nearly pulled the front door of
03:23its hinges more is more kind yeah I hope you can teach me some refinement today right okay so we're
03:31gonna do some Christmas stars two three four five you need five straws for this however big you want
03:38your star is how big we're gonna cut these down to he's definitely gonna want a big one because we
03:42already know he goes large I'm gonna be keeping a close eye on you both over the course of the day to see
03:47who does the best we're in competition here Hillary allegedly I'm a bad loser choose your weapon
03:54you two look dangerous with those glue guns okay so I'm going to go I think about half the size here
04:02okay so and all you're gonna do is you're gonna cut all five of your straws down okay there we go
04:08right okay a little bit of twine everyone yeah this will be a brilliant one you could do with the
04:14grandkids Hillary right what we're gonna do then is you're just gonna thread your twine through your
04:19straws as the lick important oh yes very very essential we're putting all of them through you're
04:25gonna thread all five of these onto a chain onto yes you know what's happening here what's happening
04:32here remember when you were five years old and you would be concentrating at school and your tongue would
04:36go I just noticed myself doing it as I'm right so once you've got your little
04:43a necklace of paper straws all we're gonna do is tie them together at the top and we're gonna
04:49just pull them tight right once we get to there you just get any two of them together yeah and once
04:56you've got the two together just twist them yeah and once they twisted yeah goes underneath at the top
05:01yeah and once it's underneath you could untwist the twist oh yeah got it I'm back to where I started oh
05:10did that happen you do that again so twist two of them together I had a bit of a problem with the
05:15paper straws it's my fat fingers you see that that just I mean Hillary was like in and out in and then
05:20she whipped up a star help Hillary twist then up underneath yeah and then you just pull them
05:27apart pull them at the bottom pulling the wrong one apart all right oh yeah love it that looks good
05:32thank you for your help yes that is so simple Hillary's nailed that done too now I'm on a roll I'm on a
05:40roll she is on a roll well these will look great on the Christmas tree won't they definitely okay the
05:46killer question go on when is it acceptable to get the trio 6th of November 6th of November
05:52get bonfire out of the way first and then it starts to feel Christmas doesn't it I don't want it
05:57just there for two weeks I want it there for two months I want to enjoy it once it's done so
06:01man after my own heart yeah I love the Christmas yeah so how about in your house Michael Whitehall if
06:07he had his way would have it up on Christmas Eve and down by Boxing Night yes we have an argument
06:12no hear about it and I usually win actually it's up for much longer than he would like so the tree
06:18that I bought the lights built in I love a colored light Michael likes white and every time I walk past
06:25I put it onto multicolored flashing and every time he walks past he puts it onto white static so you know
06:32who's been through the room last can we take a moment to notice hello how are you oh yes we've got
06:39three now oh there you go thank you it's only mozzy stuff yes there you go
06:44well now we've covered level one star making yes I want you to make a five point star with five
07:04sticks five sticks for you sir one two three four five sticks for you lovely all you're going to do is
07:11basically replicate this and then once we've got the star made we're going to use the glue gun
07:16okay to just hold that star in place now do we need any glue gun training you two I mean I've never
07:23used a glue gun so all training very welcome okay right so I've put mine on my little cardboard
07:28what we'll do is we'll position the first bits down just to hold them in place do we need to
07:34wiggle it about to get glue all over it or just so once they're held in place we can go and add
07:38more glue to make sure it's really does it matter that it's not perfect no because we're going to
07:43perfect it a little bit later when you were making things yeah Jack when he was a kid yeah how did you
07:48survive without a glue gun well do you know one of the my proudest moments I don't know if you
07:54remember the Tracy Island Christmas debacle oh Tracy Island Thunderbirds I made it so my mum made me a
08:02Tracy I would put me a machine toilet glass Tracy Island oh so she's definitely a crafter then sadly I
08:09think it was my finest hour yeah well I hear that's been downhill ever since but Sarah yes I think I
08:15might have um glued my stars at the table I've just noticed don't you worry we'll just strategically
08:21tap it off right we'll come on let's come up in one piece how did you get that off the table Hillary
08:27did you I got the scissors and just did you it eased it off it's coming it's coming there you go look at
08:34that is it feeling nice sturdy it is feeling pretty steady yeah we're ready to move on to the next we
08:38are I think we are right what we're going to do is we're going to wrap our star in jute twine oh you
08:45can either tie a knot in it to get it started or you can stick it down with a bit of hot glue right
08:50so what I'm doing is I'm just wrapping it around a few times just generally randomly generally random
08:58round each arm round each arm but then what we need to do is every now and again is pop a little glob of
09:04hot glue just so that we keep it nice and tight these are starting to look really good and they start and
09:11take shape don't they and come on this is just a bit of jute twine yeah do you think you'll get
09:16Jack doing any crafting do you know what he's quite arty Jack he's an art scholar at school really yeah
09:22and went and did history of art at Manchester University for about 10 seconds comedy career
09:28gang what I do want you all to do at some point as well is find out which way your stars looking the
09:35best so it'll look nicer there that is my top there look it's really good yeah what I'm gonna
09:42do is while I'm here and I'm gonna put a little blob of glue and I'm gonna give myself a nice little
09:47loop to hang it and then wrap it round a couple of more times you two are getting hungry that you
09:54know what I'm gonna do while you're doing that I've been working on a bigger one whoa size of that
10:01I'm feeling slightly inadequate now with our little stars exactly the same technique I've
10:06just used bigger dowels and I'm gonna add a little bit of twine onto that one while you're gone a little
10:11bit of extra gold gold to finish it off he's just gonna cut the end and we're just gonna glue the
10:16end in right Hillary's going for it going for the snip and the glue slip and the prod presumably so I
10:23prodded it in a little bit what did you do then you glued it and buried it buried it yeah I've given you
10:29some lights there by the way yes love a light do you want me to unwind them for you to I am about
10:37to make a holy mess of this on it let's do a swapping so glad you're here Sarah do you know
10:41what I'll keep you right do you think you could get any of your curry cast craft absolutely yeah yeah
10:46there you go they're all very jealous when I thought I was coming here yeah yeah yeah oh I love
10:51that have you been in curry I've been in curry for six years wow wow I used to love Benador oh did
10:58you loved Benador amazing you know I've got my hot pants on under this table oh oh we're back to
11:05them later today hello we did one Christmas episode which was shot in the middle of the summer so it's
11:13about 32 degrees we had Tim Healy stood on the roof of the Benador palace with his wig on sweating
11:21spraying snow all over the road are you going with the lights yeah so we just twirl it round do we stick
11:29them on and then just hide that inside at the back and then we're just going to wind the lights round
11:35yeah switch them on Tony let's see how they're looking oh yes and I've just given you a nice
11:41little man sprig that we can add on to the air it just wow you've gone mad nice little bit of
11:47foliage on the edge there right so all I've done on me big one there is added a nice ribbon to be able
11:55to hang it up with all right yeah tied a little bow on the front and then these are just they just
12:00all pop in just it adds a nice little something doesn't it I'm going to celebrate this this is again
12:08so simple but so effective I mean it looks kind of rustic looks like it should be on a tree loving the glue
12:18gun as well I definitely want a glue gun and then all I added was a little bit of extra gold all time and
12:23it just gives it that little bit of something else yeah but it's exactly the same technique as
12:28you do you two have finished anyway we have how will oh look though I might display with my other
12:35stuff oh look could I just say something about your star go on it would make a fabulous athlete
12:40because it's got quite a wide base and like myself I'm not bloating here but I'm pretty impressed
12:47with my star I really am our personalities have come through in our stars we've seen Hillary's
12:52theirs is all athletic and neat and a bit like Hillary nice and slender mine's a bit rough and
12:59ready a bit round around the edges and I'm there's also a star with a very wide piece well you know
13:08what I'm thinking of course don't you that I'm now gonna have to make two more because I've got three
13:12grandchildren so I can't leave one for each well Hillary don't you worry I've got plenty of crafting
13:16lined up the rest of the day for us we are just getting started ready to start on the next big
13:21ready for let's read it on
13:28you've been out in the garden yet well hello mate I've had a cheeky walk around picked up a few
13:47bits of branches that we might use later hey oh hello someone's been shopping oh I told you we
13:52were going B I told you I love that we can get creative without needing weeks of prep just a
14:00little bit of foliage and an Amazon delivery right so I've got everything we needed oh it's like
14:07Christmas what well you should say that a little bit of for snow oh yes it's Christmas without snow
14:14but for sure and some salt that's what works great for a snowy look and okay I've got some glittery yeah
14:22oh of course you have a little bit of felt oh now this is right I love a bit of felt yeah now I've
14:28got plenty of little twigs I didn't know how good we'd be able to forage for what I slightly curious
14:33about the Epsom yes I might is there a hot tub in the garden you you wish Hillary you wish and then
14:39this oh whoa we're going to be crafting with wow look at that right so biscuits in there yeah oh no
14:48actually we're not going biscuits that's a shame no Christmas cookies what we are going to do is we're
14:55going to create a whole scene inside the big jar nice liking that yeah right come on then you've got
15:01one jar each here you go Hillary oh thank you very much heavy lovely thank you so Tony I'm going to need those
15:08little artist palettes oh we're getting properly artistic now I thought that was for eggs
15:13so your eggs didn't fall over quail eggs at that size right pass me them here and I'll put us a little bit of glue in the
15:20middle of each of them so this is just a regular PVA glue plenty of it right and then we're going to need those Epsom salts
15:27and what we're going to do is we're going to create a snow scene with a little bit of a window so that
15:34you can look into the jar but you've got snow in the background okay so you could take your lid off if you
15:39wanted and I would recommend doing a little bit at a time so maybe we would do around your window first of
15:46all yeah I'm going for a wavy bottom are you hello so now that I've pasted the glass yeah how do I get the
15:58salt on we're going to paint and then we're just going to literally tap the salt with with the
16:04hands with your hands sprinkle situation a sprinkling situation I like it yeah but I assume we're doing the
16:10salts on this tray so that I'm yes I'm going in she's going in Hillary's going in this is lovely
16:17because it's very messy you're very messy yeah how are you getting on there Tony you've been very quiet
16:21I am in the zone I'm in the zone I'm just about oh sorry I'm nicking Hillary's salts there is that a
16:27bit of sabotage going on there Tony not at all this is so satisfying isn't it making a mess without getting told
16:36off for it it's great I love it so Tony I'm guessing you've probably filmed Christmas on curry already
16:42have we have so on about the 1st of October you come down to the set and you can smell turkey and
16:49you can smell a roast dinner eight o'clock in the morning when you've just finished your scrambled eggs
16:53you then have to sit down and eat a full-on cooked Christmas dinner which our brilliant art department
16:59has normally been up all night cooking this Christmas dinner oh lovely brilliant oh I feel like I'm getting
17:04all the behind-the-scenes gossip here as well what you want to know anyone get a bit uh Larry around Christmas
17:11well a few people are probably get murdered as it's coronation street you know but that's fine though they keep
17:17me busy because I'm the undertaker so I usually have a very busy Christmas that's looking good
17:23probably don't need to put more salt on it no I think that looks great now I think we should leave those
17:2810 minutes and let's do a bit of a clean-up get the epsom salts off the table and then we're exaggerating the
17:33crafting to go inside okay
17:41okay so while they are just drying a little bit I thought should we start and make our bits to go inside
17:45yes please yes right so you've got some glittery yarn and I thought we could all make an angel and then
17:52we could dangle it down from the top nice have you made any angels before only in the snow yeah oh yeah
17:58piece of cardboard yeah and what we're gonna do is we're gonna wrap this round our cardboard I mean we're
18:06obviously going to make our tassel into an angel but I mean this is how you would make tassels to
18:11decorate anything tassel tastic it is tassel tastic Hillary I love it yeah oh my angels to be as chubby
18:19as my staff oh yeah right if you want a chubby angel then maybe he's had a little bit more than yeah
18:26I think I might leave mine I think she'll be quite nice okay how's that he's still got that's looking
18:32good yeah good right so if you trim off your yarn right then what I do want you to do is cut
18:42yourself now we need quite a long piece because we're going to dangle her from the the top of our
18:48jars with this so we can always trim it later okay yeah yeah looking good looking good with a flourish
18:55looking good she's there with the scissors thread it through yeah and then tie it at the top
19:01just tie it just tie a knot at the top nice and tight right so if that's going to be our top yeah
19:09what we're going to do is just take it off the off here first unless we've wound it too tight yeah no
19:16oh you've got that and then we're just trimming through them all at the bottom yeah right right
19:22gonna go flourish now oh oh there we go very satisfying this is that noise yeah I think Hillary's got the edge
19:29on me she's very nimble with her fingers so I just need to be careful that I don't start losing
19:36because I think she's better than she's letting on yeah yeah I've got my eye on her now can you see that
19:43she looks a little bit rainbow-esque at the moment yes yes and what I want to do is bring her all together
19:48yeah so we're going to give her a little bit of a body and then the rest coming down so if you cut a longer
19:53piece of yarn and what I want you to do is tie it round her midriff oh several times
20:00several times okay yeah so can you see so we're going oh so she's got a head I see
20:05well no that's going to be a body for a head yeah I've got you a little bead yes okay so all we're
20:11going to do is we're going to thread the wool through the bead it's all about the lick it's all about the lick
20:17it's all about the lick we've got we've got this down pat now haven't we we have right now we could tie
20:22a big knot above a head but we don't need to guys because we've got our glue guns so all I want you
20:28to do is put a little blob of glue more or less into the wooden bead and then pull it down and bead on
20:37this is now like brain surgery it's hot going in Hillary oh nice yeah going in oh
20:44pull through darling do you know what I want to do with my angel I'm going to give her a little hair trim
20:49on the bottom okay so just so that she's all a little bit uniform so do you know what I thought
20:54I'd do I've tied a little bow for you which I thought would make her wings at the back nice so all we need
21:01to do is that yes right so there are it oh Tony love it I think he's gonna give me a good run for
21:13my money I think he's got hidden depths and I need to look to my laurels I think he's gonna run me to
21:21the line bring it on I feel that she needs eyes and things oh is that a bit radical
21:33she's gone rogue not even without faces but if you want to give her some eyes we'll I'll find you a
21:38sharpie when we have a bit of a break later now obviously we're going to put them in our little
21:42snowy scenes but you could do all sorts of these you could hang them on the tree you could oh if you've
21:48got your presents you could use it as like a little tag on your presents yeah okay so if you get your
21:54jar up it should be dry now I hope you these are heavy oh so a bit of snow in the bottom yes please
22:02right you've got a bag of four snow there four snow four snow I love it for like the true northerner in
22:11here yes all of it no you don't want too much in that's looking good Tony I'll put some Christmas
22:18lights out and then your lights you see you'll just pop on top to me oh look at that like a twinkling
22:25masterpiece and then you can have the angel flying over the top she's gonna look great in there yes that's
22:31that's sent off and she looks great well we're now going to build a little village oh hi for our
22:37angel to fly over love it now you are crafter extraordinaire right let's get them out of the way and let's
22:46get started on the next bit
22:48it wouldn't be Christmas without a fun festive treat and this one's guaranteed to disappear faster
23:03than Santa on Christmas Eve I was thinking we'd do a little treat for Hillary and Tony a little kind
23:11of made crafting interlude pick me up so I'm going to make some peanut butter chocolate cups in little
23:18reindeer shapes this is a foolproof way to melt the chocolate then gonna make them in the peanut butter
23:29cups so I've just got some tiny little cake cases I'm just popping a little bit of chocolate into the
23:35base that'll form the bottom part of the peanut butter cup and then I want it to
23:42kind of come up the sides so I'm just going to ease it round like this
23:49right I've gone for squeezy peanut butter to make life easier
24:00and then we're going to seal that in with even more chocolate
24:05now I've seen the fancy chocolatiers like with the moulder tap
24:12oh just levels them out perfectly then we just need to make them into reindeers
24:17so I've got some little pretzels
24:20I thought they'd snap in half and make little antlers
24:23and then I've got some little edible reindeer eyes
24:26and their red noses are just little sweeties
24:29oh they're going to get a lovely
24:44and then they're ready to go in the fridge
24:48and then all we need to do is take them out of their little wrappers
25:10now they look smashing and I think Hillary and Tony are going to love them

34:42and i've got just the trick to style up your favourite christmas tipple
34:47so we've done a scene in a jar
34:51i thought why not do a little christmas scene in a glass
34:55this is a really fun treat and super easy
34:58all i'm going to use a little bit of rosemary
35:01some pomegranate seeds
35:03we're going to freeze it ready
35:05now this is the low tack tape
35:08that is going to hold our little miniature christmas tree in place
35:12so you can see there i've just got a little bit of a gap in the middle
35:15that looks about a good size there
35:19and then you see that
35:23will be held just nicely
35:25in the glass
35:26and then we want it to freeze in place there
35:29so i'm going to start off just with a little bit of water
35:31because it's going to be going into the freezer
35:33lovely
35:34lovely
35:35and then a couple of little pomegranates in
35:38and they should sink to the bottom
35:40and give it a little bit of colour
35:42and i'm going to do one of them for each of us
35:45now they are looking super
36:05and then you just need to take the washi tape off
36:08and what you'll see is that christmas tree
36:11will have frozen
36:13oh
36:14perfectly into place
36:15and then all that's left is to add your tipple of choice
36:20now i'm just adding tonic water to these
