Some of these choices will definitely upset a few people...
Transcript
00:00The perfect casting choice can make all the difference to a movie or TV project.
00:04Conversely, there are sometimes completely obvious choices for roles that come together absolutely perfectly.
00:10Online communities adore throwing in their two cents when it comes to who should play what role.
00:16And we here at What Culture are no different, it seems.
00:19And so, with that in mind then, I'm Ellie with What Culture, and here are 10 actors perfect for upcoming movie roles.
00:26Number 10. Carrie-Anne Moss in John Wick Chapter 5
00:30The John Wick franchise has cumulatively grossed a whopping $573 million worldwide from the first film to the third.
00:39The kick-ass Keanu Reeves action vehicle has also been critically well-received for each of the hero's outings,
00:45with praise being heaped on the performances, world-building and exceptional fight choreography.
00:50John Wick Chapter 4 is up for release in early 2023, and given how increasingly lucrative the franchise has been for Lionsgate Studios
00:59and Keanu Reeves' continued commitment to the future of the role, a Chapter 5 for Our Troubled Hero is all but confirmed.
01:06With this in mind, Carrie-Anne Moss would be perfect to play an as-yet-unnamed part in this franchise entry.
01:14Moss herself garnered critical praise for her turn as ruthless lawyer Jerry Hogarth in Marvel's Jessica Jones,
01:20and whilst The Matrix Resurrections turned out to be an ultimately disappointing affair,
01:25it was heartwarming to see her reunited with her screen partner Reeves.
01:29Assuming Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King isn't killed off during the events of Chapter 4,
01:33this casting would certainly tickle the teats of nostalgia.
01:37This is especially true given we were denied seeing the triumphant Triumvirate reunited during The Matrix Resurrections.
01:44Number 9. Taron Egerton in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse
01:48Plot details are thin on the ground for the upcoming animated sequel.
01:52Confirmed from the small teaser released at the end of 2021,
01:55we know Spider-Gwen will be making a return as Miles Morales' crime-fighting partner and potential love interest.
02:02Also confirmed to star is Oscar Isaac's meme-baiting Spider-Man 2099,
02:07also confirmed in the first film's excellent post-credits stinger.
02:11Given this sequel will see Miles' journey across multiple dimensions,
02:14we're likely going to see even more iterations of our web-slinging hero than we did the first time around.
02:21Enter Spider-Punk, a Cockney version of the hero and general pastiche of the Johnny Rotten punk rocker cliché.
02:28Who better to embody this humorous iteration than Eggsy himself, Taron Egerton,
02:33who proved himself a consummate Londoner in the Kingsman franchise.
02:37What with Spider-Punk also being a musician, Egerton fulfills the needs of that aspect beautifully.
02:43To put it lightly, the man's got pipes,
02:46lending his vocal talents to both the Sing movies and as Elton John in the Rocketman biopic.
02:51With Egerton's clear talent as a character actor,
02:54he would absolutely nail the musician side of the character as well as the rough-and-tumble Cockney side.
03:00Number 8. Michelle Rodriguez in Star Wars Rogue Squadron
03:04Star Wars Rogue Squadron is yet another project we know little about.
03:08Set for release in 2023 and held by Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins,
03:12the film will follow an entirely new cast of characters in an original story focused on a new generation of starfighter pilots.
03:20Further plot details along with casting decisions are yet to be announced,
03:24but given how well Star Wars Rogue One worked as a story unshackled from the central franchise's cumbersome genre expectations,
03:32here's hoping lightning strikes twice with this new offering.
03:35Given Michelle Rodriguez's storied history with the Fast and Furious franchise,
03:39it's a no-brainer she would be perfect for a role on a Star Wars film focused on similar vehicular mayhem.
03:46Known for playing a tough chick role across her many films,
03:49Rodriguez would be perfect for some kind of command position within the titular Rogue Squadron.
03:54Furthermore, Rodriguez's small but memorable role as Skye in the indie horror flick She Dies Tomorrow
04:00hinted at untapped acting chops above and beyond her so-far great, if cliched, acting history.
04:07Number 7. Gemma Chan in The Three-Body Problem
04:10The Three-Body Problem is an utterly terrifying trilogy of sci-fi books by Chinese author Liu Cixin
04:17recounting a war between humans and an aggressive alien race known as the Tresolarans.
04:22Given the trilogy's length and use of multiple timelines,
04:25it's safe to assume much of the first season will focus on the character of Ye Wenjie,
04:29the first contact of the Tresolarans amid China's cultural revolution.
04:34Gemma Chan impressed just about everyone with her turn as rogue android Mia on humans
04:39and is now rightfully reaping the rewards.
04:42With burgeoning blockbuster success in the likes of Crazy Rich Asians,
04:46Raya and the Last Dragon and Marvel's Eternals,
04:48Chan's career is looking better and better every year.
04:52Netflix's Three-Body Problem will be an English-language adaptation of the work,
04:56but given the plot's inseparable ties to Chinese culture and history,
05:00the appropriate casting choices must be made.
05:03An actor with the talent of Chan is perfectly suited to the role.
05:06Number 6 Bradley Cooper in Indiana Jones 6
05:10With Indiana Jones 5 currently set to release in June of 2023,
05:14much conversation has been made about lead Harrison Ford's advanced age
05:18and the future of the franchise as a result of this.
05:21Whilst the Crystal Skull movie was so disappointing
05:24that many fans don't even consider it in canon anymore,
05:27we are nonetheless excited to see Ford don the iconic fedora and whip
05:31potentially one last time.
05:33Given that Hollywood is generally one big feedback loop
05:36of nostalgia-fuelled money-making,
05:38it's highly unlikely this will be the last we see
05:41of our grumpy, swashbuckling archaeologist.
05:44This can only mean one thing.
05:46Reboot.
05:47Here is a role in which Bradley Cooper could easily shine.
05:51Not only does he have the same cantankerous energy
05:53that could match the role of Indy,
05:55but he also possesses the same physicality
05:58that Ford did in the first three movies.
06:00Further supporting the physical similarities,
06:02Cooper acquired a very Indy-esque fedora
06:04during the events of Guillermo del Toro's brilliant Nightmare Alley.
06:08Seeing the hangover star in this iconic item of clothing
06:11only compounds the fact that he's the perfect guy for the job.
06:15Number 5 Michaela Cole in The Sandman
06:18Set inside the DC universe,
06:21we follow Morpheus, Lord of Dreams,
06:23as he rebuilds his kingdom
06:24after being imprisoned by human occultists for many decades.
06:28Morpheus is a part of an immortal race known as the Endless.
06:32The last member is conspicuously absent from the cast list.
06:36With this in mind,
06:36we posit that Michaela Cole would be perfect
06:39for the character of Delirium,
06:41who is presumably set to appear in future seasons.
06:44Once known as Delight among the Endless,
06:46she's suffered through a traumatic event
06:48that transformed her into the eccentric, unpredictable Delirium.
06:52And yes, in the comics Delirium is represented by a childlike figure,
06:56though this incredibly layered character
06:58deserves the touch of a seasoned acting veteran
07:00to truly bring it to life.
07:02Given Cole's towering portrayal of trauma
07:04in her own show I May Destroy You,
07:07she has a good handle on sensitively playing such characters.
07:10Her comedic sensibilities,
07:12as displayed in E4's brilliant chewing gum,
07:15would also lend incredibly well
07:16to the more quirky aspects of the character.
07:18Number 4. Henry Golding in Bond 26
07:22Before I go any further,
07:23just a major spoiler warning ahead for No Time To Die,
07:27so if you haven't seen that film,
07:28then maybe skip this section.
07:30With Daniel Craig's swan song Bond entry
07:32satisfying a majority of critics and audiences,
07:35it's still hard to forget that they only went
07:37and definitively killed off the beloved spy
07:40right in front of our eyes.
07:42No one would have been happier at this outcome
07:44than Craig himself,
07:45who has stated in no uncertain terms
07:47he resents the character
07:48and wished to stop playing him many times over the years.
07:52It does leave a giant question mark
07:53over who should next take the 007 mantle,
07:56with many rumors and fan castings
07:58pointing to the likes of Tom Hardy,
08:00Henry Cavill, and Idris Elba.
08:02But we reckon Henry Golding
08:04would make for the perfect MI6 super spy,
08:07showing us his suave credentials
08:09in the likes of Crazy Rich Asians,
08:11as well as presenting the necessary grit
08:13to play a deadly ninja in G.I. Joe's Snake Eyes,
08:16Golding would be a perfect and modern choice
08:18to take on the role of the man with a license to kill.
08:22Furthermore, it would make sense for the studio
08:24to cast someone relatively young for the role.
08:27At 35 years old,
08:28Golding is younger than most of the popular picks
08:30for the character
08:31and could ensure a long tenure
08:33in the position of the titular spy.
08:35And if they could bring back Anadiamas' Paloma
08:38while they're at it,
08:39that'd be just swell.
08:40Number 3.
08:41Paddy Considine in The Fantastic Four
08:44Paddy Considine has been a mainstay
08:46of British film and television
08:48for a few decades now,
08:49with memorable roles such as
08:51the vengeful Richard in Dead Man's Shoes,
08:53appearances in two out of the three
08:55Cornetto trilogy movies,
08:57and a skin-crawling turn
08:58as pervert priest John Hughes
09:00in Peaky Blinders.
09:01With all this incredible talent
09:03both in front of and behind the camera,
09:05it's frankly incredible
09:06he hasn't broken big in Hollywood yet.
09:09Given the movie industry's preference
09:11for casting British talent
09:12in villainous roles,
09:13Considine is perfect
09:14for the inevitable MCU version
09:17of Doctor Doom.
09:18The Fantastic Four
09:19has not had a great time
09:20when it comes to big-screen adaptations,
09:23and that's putting it lightly.
09:24The 2005 effort,
09:26despite making enough bank
09:27to warrant a sequel,
09:28was an experience limper
09:30than Mr. Fantastic's CGI arms.
09:32To make matters worse,
09:33as the initially promising
09:34Josh Trank reboot
09:35tanked worse than almost
09:37any other superhero film
09:38of that era.
09:40With a full MCU version
09:41of Marvel's first family
09:43confirmed to be on the way,
09:45who better to take on
09:46the dangerous layered character
09:47of Victor Von Doom
09:48than one of British media's
09:50most preeminent talents?
09:52Number 2.
09:53Pamela Anderson
09:54in Black Canary.
09:56The DCEU's
09:57Bird of Prey film,
09:58whilst a very slight
09:59box office flop,
10:00was generally well-received
10:01by critics.
10:03Praise was levelled
10:03particularly at the cast
10:05and performances,
10:06with Margot Robbie's
10:07inimitable turn as Harley Quinn
10:09and Jurnee Smollett
10:10as Black Canary.
10:11A Black Canary spin-off film
10:13has been tentatively greenlit
10:14for release in 2023,
10:16with Smollett reprising her role
10:18as the titular Bird of Prey.
10:20Given that director
10:20Cathy Yan originally wanted
10:22Poison Ivy to appear
10:23in the still-unconfirmed
10:25Birds of Prey sequel,
10:26the Black Canary solo movie
10:28seems like the perfect opportunity
10:29to finally debut
10:31the DCEU version of Ivy.
10:33With this in mind,
10:35Pamela Anderson
10:35would be the perfect
10:37stunt casting for the role.
10:39To put it lightly,
10:39Hollywood seems to have
10:40a major issue
10:41casting a woman
10:42over the age of 40
10:43in roles such as these,
10:45a trend that is thankfully
10:46beginning to change,
10:47so casting Anderson
10:48would really throw down
10:49the gauntlet
10:50in reversing these practices.
10:52Furthermore,
10:53Poison Ivy is very much
10:54portrayed as an environmentalist.
10:56Given Anderson's real-life
10:58charity work in this field,
10:59it feels like a perfect union
11:00between actor and character.
11:02What with the recent release
11:04of Disney Plus'
11:05Pam and Tommy
11:05reigniting her profile
11:07among younger audiences,
11:09now would be the perfect time
11:10for a Pamela Anderson
11:11renaissance.
11:13Number 1.
11:13Harry Styles
11:14in Dune Part 2.
11:16One major character
11:17who was conspicuously absent
11:19from Dune Part 1
11:20was Glossu Rabanne's
11:21younger brother,
11:22Fade Rother.
11:24A physical threat
11:24in his own right
11:25and much more Machiavellian
11:27compared to his beastly brother,
11:29Fade is the favourite
11:30of Baron Harkonnen
11:31as successor to the house.
11:33It was theorised for a while
11:34that the character
11:35had been cut entirely
11:36to trim down
11:37the dense plot structure
11:38of the novel.
11:39Director Denis Villeneuve
11:40recently confirmed that,
11:41yes, lovely Fade will be making
11:43a major appearance
11:44in the upcoming Part 2.
11:46One interesting
11:47and somewhat left-field suggestion
11:49has been One Direction alumni
11:51Harry Styles
11:52and it's an incredibly good fit
11:54for the role.
11:56Fade Rother is meant to be
11:57the yin to Paul Atreides' Yang
11:59and given Styles and Chalamet's
12:01similar builds,
12:02hair and facial features,
12:03this kind of stunt casting
12:05would work rather well.
12:06What's more,
12:07Styles himself impressed
12:08naysayers with his small
12:09but memorable turn
12:10as Alex in Christopher Nolan's
12:12Dunkirk as well as
12:13showing his gameness
12:14for more central roles
12:15in his surprise
12:16Eternals cameo?
12:18Let's just hope
12:18that Denis Villeneuve
12:19watches WhatCulture.
12:21And that concludes our list.
