00:02President Donald Trump is challenging the BBC over a documentary that stitched together parts of his January 6th speech.
00:10He wants an apology, a retraction and compensation for the harm caused.
00:14But the BBC says no real harm occurred and won't pay.
00:18The remarks were made just before his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to interfere with the certification of Joe Biden's Electoral College victory.
00:25The edited clip showed Trump saying, we're going to walk down to the Capitol and I'll be there with you and we'll fight.
00:31We fight like H. And if you don't fight like H, you're not going to have a country anymore.
00:36The clip combined separate parts of Trump's speech.
00:39Early on, he said, we're going to walk down.
00:41We're going to walk down to the Capitol and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen.
00:46After the controversy, BBC leaders Tim Davey and Deborah Ternes resigned.
00:50Trump's legal team threatened a $1 billion lawsuit unless the BBC issued a full and fair retraction,
00:57apologized and appropriately compensated President Trump for the harm caused.
01:02In its clarifications and corrections, the BBC admitted the segment showed excerpts taken from different parts of the speech and said,
01:09We accept that our edit unintentionally created the impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.
01:16The BBC added, the BBC would like to apologize to President Trump for that error of judgment
01:22and will not be broadcast again in this form on any BBC platforms.
01:27The BBC argues it lacked U.S. rights and didn't air the Panorama episode there.
01:32The documentary caused no harm since Trump won in 2024.
01:36The clip was only edited for brevity, wasn't meant to be viewed alone, and U.S. defamation law protects political speech.
01:43Prior to the BBC's apology, the Daily Telegraph noted another misleading edit of Trump's January 6th speech.
01:50This one appearing on a 2022 BBC Newsnight episode.
01:55A BBC spokesperson later stated,
01:57The BBC holds itself to the highest editorial standards.
02:00This matter has been brought to our attention, and we are now looking into it.
