SAG-AFTRA has selected Alan Alda as the 55th recipient of its annual life achievement award, which he'll receive at the 2019 SAG Awards on Jan. 27.

00:00Alan Alder has been selected as the 55th recipient of SAG-AFTRA's annual
00:04Life Achievement Award. The beloved actor will receive the honor at the 2019 SAG
00:08Awards on Jan. 27. Alder, best known for his role as Army Captain Hawkeye Pierce
00:13on CBS's acclaimed military comedy MASH, became the first person to have won
00:17acting, directing and writing Emmys for the same series. MASH remains one of the
00:22highest-rated programs in the U.S. of all time, watched by 106 million people.
00:26And since its conclusion, Alder has appeared on TV shows including ER, The West Wing,
00:3130 Rock, The Big Sea, The Blacklist, Horace and Pete and The Good Fight.
00:34He has also enjoyed roles in films like Manhattan Murder Mystery, Everyone Says I Love You,
00:39The Object of My Affection, The Aviator, Tower Heist and Bridge of Spies.
00:43He will next be seen in an untitled Noah Baumbach project starring Scarlett Johansson
00:47and Adam Driver. Alder has won Emmys and Golden Globes and has been nominated for an
00:52Oscar and four SAG Awards and is only one of six people to receive Oscar, Tony and Emmy
00:57nominations in the same year. The SAG Life Achievement Award is given to an actor who
01:01fosters the finest ideals of the profession. Said SAG AFTER President Gabrielle

01:06It is an honor and privilege to announce that our SAG Life Achievement Award will be
01:10presented to the fabulous Alan Alder. He is an artist whose body of work is a testament to
01:15the craft and the magic of our business. His ability to make us laugh, to think and to feel
01:20is extraordinary. From theater to television, movies and new media, Alan's dedication and talent
01:25are exceeded only by his contributions to a just and caring society. Past recipients of the
01:31prestigious award include Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett, Debbie Reynolds, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler
01:36Moore, Ernest Borgnine and Betty White. Alder recently revealed that he was diagnosed with
01:40Parkinson's disease three and a half years ago, explaining that he asked for a scan after
01:45reading an article that acting out your dreams, something he was doing, could be a very early
01:49symptom of the illness. However, the award-winning actor stressed that he doesn't feel like he's been
01:54held back by the disease, explaining that since his diagnosis, in addition to acting, he's taken up
01:58boxing and tennis.
02:00It hasn't stopped my life at all, he said. I've had a richer life than I've had up until now.
