00:00Many of us are now making the move to our beautiful coastlines.
00:06Our beachfront dreamers want crashing waves and salty sea air.
00:10So grab your sunscreen and join us on the hunt for the ultimate beach house.
00:16It's been a hard day hunting.
00:17I'm working with a gorgeous young family, Dan, Shea and their little baby Harvey.
00:31They've been living in a two-bedroom apartment and they've finally decided that now is the time to find their forever family home.
00:38It's not going to happen that close to the city, but we would like to be by the water.
00:42So here we are in the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston.
00:45Let's see how we go.
00:47We just love being outdoors.
00:53Beach is such a great place to be and there's nothing better than the water in summer.
00:58Just living that outdoors lifestyle.
01:00We're looking to buy a family home with more space close to the beach, close to amenities, where we can continue to grow our family.
01:08We have a little 18-month-old Harvey, hoping to have another baby soon, so he needs something.
01:13Obviously with more bedrooms, we're in a little unit at the moment.
01:16Our budget is around $1.35, so ideally looking for three-bedroom minimum, preferably four, so we have that spare room option for family to come and stay.
01:27Big backyard, ideally, because Harvey loves being outside, so space for him to explore and spend time outside.
01:33And we need a bath, yeah, especially with the...
01:37Not for Harvey, for Dan.
01:38Yeah, I'm a bit of a bath man, so we'll say it's for Harvey.
01:43Bath man Dan.
01:44Nestled on Victoria's picturesque coastline, Frankston is one of the most underrated gems, offering a laid-back beachside lifestyle, family-friendly atmosphere and a growing arts and food scene.
01:59With stunning beaches, parklands and a strong sense of community, Frankston is the perfect place for Dan and Shay's forever home.
02:07Good morning, Shay. Hey, Dan. How are you?
02:15Hi, Shay. How are you?
02:16Great to see you.
02:17Very excited about today, because nothing gives me more joy than sticky-beaking through houses.
02:22I'll be honest about that.
02:23We love it as well.
02:24I know this is going to be your first real home, and it is a big move from a unit to a full block of your own.
02:31What are you really hunting for?
02:33Look, I think we're just looking for space, really.
02:35More bedrooms. We're currently in a two-bedroom unit, and we have a toddler, and Dan works from home, so...
02:40With an 18-month-old, yeah, you're in no rush to move again anytime soon.
02:44So we want to set something in place here, which is a little bit future-proofed, which is going to give you some longevity and room to grow, yeah?
02:51Absolutely, yeah.
02:52House number one.
02:54We've got a huge block here. It's 855 square metres, so you've got a lot of room to move.
02:59It's four bedrooms.
03:00Yeah, great.
03:01Two bathrooms.
03:02This magnificent wisteria that's growing all the way along.
03:05In summer, this will be dripping with purple flowers.
03:08Wow.
03:08It will be magnificent.
03:09It looks grand compared to what we're in right now.
03:11Much bigger.
03:12Everything looks good compared to a two-bedroom unit, doesn't it?
03:15Yeah.
03:15All right, you ready to head inside?
03:16Yeah, let's have a look.
03:17Come on in.
03:21Yeah, I see in the front of the house, like, it's big.
03:24I'm not sure about the orange brick. It's a little ugly.
03:27Yeah, we could definitely paint that, though, maybe, or render it.
03:29And the vine across the balustrade is really nice.
03:32That vine's pretty cool.
03:33Okay.
03:41Okay.
03:41So, as it sits, it's not the 60s on the outside.
03:45Yeah.
03:46It's beautiful and fresh inside.
03:47It's quite big and spacious, and the windows, there's so much natural light.
03:51It's huge.
03:52It's gorgeous.
03:53I love these corner windows.
03:55Inside the house, it's definitely more refreshed than outside the house.
03:59I thought, I was sort of expecting what we might need to do a bit more work, a bit more
04:02renovating to it, but it has been updated.
04:04How good's our fireplace?
04:06Yeah.
04:06How good's, and I love the way that it's, yeah, double-sided, so you've got it here in
04:10their kitchen, and then it does play through to the living room.
04:13But, look, this is really a blank canvas.
04:15You guys can do whatever you want.
04:17The lights are a bit funny, but otherwise, it's, yeah, I don't know, there's a bit to
04:20work on.
04:21Are you not into the sconces?
04:22No, I don't know.
04:23I love them.
04:24I love them.
04:24It looks like a clam or something.
04:26I love them.
04:27They're very wabi-sabi.
04:30What are they called?
04:30Yeah, they're very...
04:31Bespoke.
04:32Again, the kitchen, workable for you.
04:34Yeah.
04:34Who's the cook in this couple?
04:35Me.
04:36So, yeah, I can see there's induction cooktop and nice sniff appliances.
04:40Huge island bench, so definitely would make cooking nice and easy.
04:44A bit more storage as well than what we're used to.
04:46Yeah.
04:47I could see ourselves living here.
04:48It's definitely, like, the open sort of plan with the kitchen and living.
04:53You know, if Harvey was playing with toys or doing something in the lounge room while I'm
04:56cooking dinner, I could always have eyes on him.
04:58The bedroom wing is just down the back.
05:00Yep.
05:00Head down there.
05:01I think the primary suite is pretty impressive.
05:04Ultimately, it comes down to where you guys are going to spend your time, when you just
05:07need a little time out.
05:08Yes.
05:08That is important.
05:10Head down and have a look, and I'll see you at the back.
05:17Wow.
05:18Oh, wow, this is good guys.
05:19Yeah.
05:20This is huge.
05:22I love these.
05:23Yeah, these windows are so nice.
05:25So much natural light.
05:26Yeah, it's beautiful.
05:27Yeah, the walk-in robe, like, that's amazing.
05:29And I think that's a king bed.
05:32So, yeah, it is a nice size.
05:33Good shower, room for a bath on the side there.
05:37That's what you could probably do with that.
05:38Yeah, it is pretty big.
05:39I mean, they probably could have used a space better in there.
05:42Yeah, like, over near the toilet, like, that's just dead space.
05:45Like, I don't know.
05:45There's so much cabinetry.
05:47But, yeah, this bedroom en suite's almost bigger than our house.
05:50Yeah.
05:51It's massive.
06:02Wow.
06:02It doesn't stop, does it?
06:03Yeah, it's very big.
06:04Yeah, that's a bit different.
06:08Yeah, but not the prettiest, but very functional.
06:11Yes.
06:12The decking is exceptional.
06:14It's really, really big.
06:15Nice for entertaining.
06:17Yeah, and great for Harvey too, so he can still play outside even if it's wet,
06:20because he does really enjoy being outside.
06:22So, that's a really huge plus.
06:24This is on the market now.
06:25And what do you think the vendors are asking?
06:27I don't know.
06:27What do you think?
06:28It's a bit of work that's needed probably for us to get it up to how we'd like to live in it.
06:33So, I'd be looking at 1.25 to 1.3.
06:36Yes, I think the land size will come into it compared to some of the other properties
06:39we've sort of looked at online is that this is such a big block.
06:43So, yeah, probably around the 1.3, 1.35 mark, I would say.
06:47The vendors are looking around the 1.4.
06:50Okay.
06:51Okay.
06:52The asking price seems quite fair and reasonable to me,
06:54considering the land size where it's actually located in Frankston South.
06:58Four bedroom, two bathroom, around 1.4 probably seems fair.
07:03Coming up.
07:06Oh, he's perked up a little bit now.
07:08I like it.
07:08I like it.
07:09It's, yeah, it's beautiful.
07:23It's like a beach in your front yard.
07:25Yeah, it is.
07:27It's big.
07:27Lots of garden.
07:28Yeah, this is really cute though, the frontage.
07:31We're looking at a traditional Victorian beach shack.
07:34Yeah.
07:34Built in the 50s.
07:35Wow.
07:36It's had a little bit of work done since, a couple of little renovations along the way,
07:40but very much in its original state, original condition.
07:44There is some work to be done.
07:45Yeah.
07:45But you could absolutely make this your own.
07:48We're only 500 metres from the beach.
07:50Wow.
07:50Very, yeah, lots of character.
07:51I can see that from the outside.
07:52It's your beach shack, isn't it?
07:53Yeah.
07:53Yeah.
07:54It looks old, but super cute.
07:55So looking forward to seeing what the inside looks like.
07:57Well, let's check it out.
07:58Let's get on in.
07:58This is the name of the home, Florier.
08:10Florier.
08:11Super sweet.
08:12Very French.
08:12You've got this little stable door here, so you can have it shut for Harvey and Douglas
08:16and leave the top open for airflow.
08:18There's just a lot of character elements.
08:21Yeah, definitely.
08:22That's really sweet.
08:23I feel like this is the sort of house that you walk into and you go,
08:26ah, yes, or whoa, that's some work.
08:29Yes.
08:30Either way, I think it's super cute.
08:32Got that relaxed vibe about it, for sure.
08:35That's exactly what I felt when I walked in.
08:37I was like, whoa, this is cute.
08:39A lot of work, but it feels like a holiday home.
08:42It's like one of those ones where you'd be happy to go away for the weekend
08:45and just relax and hang out, have a wine, a cheese board.
08:49Yeah, it's very, very aesthetically pleasing.
08:52It's gorgeous.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Look, it's styled to perfection too.
08:54You can tell that the owner loves every minute of being here.
08:58You feel like you're close to the beach.
09:00You feel like you're in a beach cottage.
09:01Yeah.
09:01Yeah.
09:02The walls, they're all right.
09:04There's a few cracks, but you can tell that it needs a little bit of love.
09:07Spot on, Dan.
09:08Are you the team to do it?
09:09We'll find out.
09:09Yes.
09:10Come into the kitchen.
09:10Oh, there's a sconce, Dan.
09:22Is that less offensive for you?
09:23It's a bit nicer than the one in the other house.
09:27Just that pantry's huge.
09:28Oh, he's perked up a little bit now.
09:30I like it.
09:31I like it.
09:32It's, yeah, it's beautiful.
09:33Like, I love the character of it.
09:35I can see myself here in the morning having a pot of coffee and, yeah, it's just, it feels,
09:40it feels holiday.
09:42Yes.
09:42I'm a little worried.
09:43It feels much smaller than the previous house we've looked at though.
09:46It definitely feels like a weekender sort of feeling.
09:49That's what I'm getting.
09:50But I'm not sure about, like, every day, just with, like, the dishwasher sort of under the bench there,
09:54just practically how the layout is.
09:56But it definitely has a really nice feeling to it, that's for sure.
10:00Two bedrooms and the bathroom down that way.
10:01And then I'd love to show you the backyard.
10:03So I'll meet you out there.
10:04Okay.
10:05Let's check it out.
10:12How gorgeous are the windows?
10:14A bit smaller than the last one that we were in, but.
10:16Yeah, I love these, like, old original windows, they're beautiful.
10:21I wonder if it has en suite.
10:23No, en suite.
10:24Unless it's, oh no, it's just cupboards.
10:29Oh, some beautiful original paper.
10:31That's old school, isn't it?
10:35Oh yeah, that's definitely smaller.
10:39It's tight.
10:40And probably need some updating slate floors.
10:43That shower looks iconic.
10:45Definitely a reno job.
10:47Yeah.
10:52It's not often that I'll bust out the camera and take photos when I'm filming,
10:56but this house, it's done something to me.
10:59I don't know what, it's very special.
11:02And you can see it on my Instagram.
11:04It's very romantic.
11:10It is.
11:11It's the only word I can think of.
11:12Yeah, it's a good word for it, actually.
11:14It just feels so cosy and like you're in a rainforest somewhere, but you're close to the beach.
11:19And your home office over here, Dan, this is all happening.
11:22Yeah, you're talking my language, yes.
11:24So I'd be out there.
11:25Man shed.
11:25Lock on the door.
11:27Away from the chaos inside as a toddler.
11:30So, take a guess.
11:33Yes.
11:33What do you think, Dan?
11:34Well, it's big land and it's got proximity to the beach.
11:38So I'd say maybe 1.25 to 1.3.
11:42Okay.
11:43Yeah, I would have said round of 1.2, just with only the three bedrooms, yeah, and one being in a bungalow.
11:51Well, the vendors are asking 1.1 to 1.2.
11:55Oh, wow.
11:56Okay.
11:56So there is a lot left in your kitty to do the work that you might think needs to be done.
12:00To do the work, yeah.
12:01To do the work.
12:03I was shocked.
12:05It was a little bit lower for the land size and the proximity to the beach.
12:08It made my ears prick up a little bit because the house does need work.
12:12But if you're getting it at that price point, you can probably tip $100,000 or $200,000 into it
12:17and then get it up to it being a family home and still retaining that character feel to it all.
12:26Coming up.
12:27Ah, hello.
12:28Oh, hello.
12:30Come on up.
12:31Come and join me.
12:32Didn't mean to scare you.
12:38So right down the end of the battle axe, it's elusive, isn't it?
12:49It is.
12:50I can see a garage and that's about it at the moment.
12:52That's about it.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Four bedrooms.
12:53Okay.
12:54Two bathrooms.
12:5670s build.
12:57I think, well, I think you're going to be surprised.
13:00Okay.
13:00Let's have a look.
13:01Let's check it out.
13:02You ready, Dan?
13:02Let's do it.
13:03House three.
13:03Okay.
13:03Okay.
13:03Get ready for a step back in time.
13:17Whoa.
13:20Walking in, it was absolutely incredible.
13:24How gorgeous are those lights?
13:26Blown away by how unique it was, wallpaper, things that I wouldn't normally consider that
13:31I would like.
13:33Wow.
13:34Wow.
13:35Everything old is new again.
13:36It's incredible.
13:38Those windows.
13:40So much to look at and comment on.
13:41I don't know where to start.
13:43The architecture, the interior design, everything is just perfect.
13:50It's your own Brady Bunch house.
13:51Character, character, character.
13:53Like walking in, it's just like, wow.
13:55That, that, that.
13:57Yeah.
13:57You're just pointing to everything.
13:58And the island bench, like, you could actually have family dinner around that.
14:02Or, you know, set up Mexican night.
14:04You've just got so much room for everybody.
14:06I actually love mid-century style.
14:08Like all the light fittings and the beautiful, like, original range hood is incredible.
14:12I mean, neither of us would know how to take advantage of that piano.
14:16I think it'll probably go with the owners.
14:17Yeah.
14:18I don't think that gets to stay with the house.
14:19We're talking ceramic floor.
14:21You've got, yes, your copper range hood there are these beautiful handmade lights.
14:25This style continues throughout the whole home.
14:29Take a look downstairs.
14:31I'm going to check out this lawn.
14:32I know they have sectioned off the yard, which I think is really sensible.
14:35So I'll walk you around out there when you're done.
14:37See you soon.
14:43How amazing is that ceiling?
14:45This is cool.
14:46And the windows, it's beautiful.
14:48Look at that.
14:48Look at that light fitting in the roof.
14:50And another amazing light fitting.
14:52All the mixed materials work so well.
14:55I think the main bed's this way.
14:56Main bedroom's this way.
14:57Yeah.
14:59It's got the ceilings flat through in here.
15:02Oh, there's the ensuite.
15:04Still in its original condition.
15:05Even look at the light fitting in there.
15:07Nice.
15:08Good size.
15:09Feels like a little dark.
15:10That would be my only thing to say compared to having, like, obviously painted white walls.
15:15But still have this amazing window.
15:17The split-level living does make me a little bit nervous just with a toddler.
15:20Particularly if we were to have another baby, once they get on the move, you'd have to have
15:24eyes on them at all times, which probably might not work at this stage in our lives.
15:28That is one hesitation I do have about the house.
15:35Ah, hello.
15:36Oh.
15:37Hello.
15:38Hi.
15:38Come on up.
15:39Come and join me.
15:41Didn't mean to scare you.
15:43Hiding up here.
15:44There's always something else.
15:46This house kind of unfolds.
15:48What a great space to sit and watch the kids run amok.
15:51Isn't it?
15:51And the block goes all the way to the street.
15:54Wow.
15:54So it's almost a quarter of an acre in the middle of Frankston South.
15:57Yeah.
15:57And what you could do with this space, obviously it's wonderful to have this flat yard area
16:01for the kids.
16:02You could put in a pool, obviously, because the house is set to the back of the block.
16:05Got everything.
16:05Parents up here, kids running amok down there.
16:08Yes.
16:08I think it's got a lot of potential for what you can do with your fam.
16:12Absolutely.
16:13And it's a really workable flat block too.
16:15Like some of the properties in Frankston South are quite steep.
16:18So this is amazing to have a block this size.
16:20It's reasonably flat still too.
16:22Let's take a crack at the price.
16:25I would say probably 1.5.
16:27Yeah.
16:28Would be my guess.
16:291.6, unfortunately.
16:31Look, this is the top end.
16:34They're looking around the twos.
16:36Yes.
16:37But it's somewhere that you wouldn't have to move again for a very long time.
16:41This would be the forever, forever home.
16:43The forever, forevers.
16:45Yes.
16:45Look, it's probably a little bit more expensive than what we were originally looking at in
16:48terms of the asking price.
16:49Not completely out of the question, but it probably would stretch us just that little
16:52bit further.
16:53Yeah.
16:53Looking forward to going away, having a wine and having a discussion about, you know,
16:57where do we put in an offer and which one do we try and secure?
17:02Coming up.
17:03Shall we find out which one it was?
17:05We have made a decision.
17:14Many of us visit Frankston's beautiful beaches during the summer, but I wanted to chat with
17:19a local about what it's like to live here year round.
17:23Well, Brendan, haven't you got yourself a cosy little corner of the world here in Frankston?
17:27We do, Shelley.
17:28It's fantastic.
17:29So what is life like for you and your family here now?
17:31Obviously a lot of hard work, keeping this place looking so great and of course catering
17:35for all the amazing locals that you've got supporting you, but do you get any time off
17:39and what do you do with it?
17:39I do, I do, yeah.
17:40And what do I do with it?
17:41Rest, I guess.
17:42Try to keep fit.
17:43And both the kids work here as well, so that's handy.
17:46Yeah, we just enjoy it.
17:47Enjoy the place.
17:48What about the bay itself?
17:49Do you get out there much?
17:50I do get out there.
17:50I do enjoy the water.
17:51I do, for the most part, I look at the water.
17:53Once that view's framed by the windows, it just takes on a whole different feel.
17:57Great to hear you've got your kids working here with you.
18:00I'm at the moment house hunting for a young family.
18:03They're just moving down the bay towards Frankston.
18:06What would you say they can look forward to in their future life here?
18:09Oh, your house takes on a bit of a dual personality.
18:13It becomes a bit of a holiday house as well.
18:14But most people, they have to wait until they had a weekend or a holiday to go to the beach.
18:18We can do it every night in about five minutes, so that's great.
18:22Have you seen people now stop?
18:23Like, Frankston's become the destination.
18:25It used to be sort of the blow-through on the way down to Mornington,
18:27and now you've got so much going on here.
18:29Why don't they spend a day?
18:30We're actually getting residents from Mount Eliza and Mornington up towards Morty Allick.
18:36And, yeah, just because of the location, it is a little bit unique.
18:39To sit so close to the water, particularly around this part of the bay, it's quite rare.
18:43So that's why we are getting quite a few people coming from out of town a bit.
18:47And, obviously, East Link leads to Frankston, redevelopment of Frankston Station.
18:51All roads lead to Frankston.
18:53All roads lead to Frankston.
18:54They do.
18:55Best thing on Oliver's Corner's menu?
18:57The egg and bacon roll's pretty good.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Can't beat it, can you?
19:00No.
19:01And a few good beers, too.
19:04Now that Dan and Shay have had a chance to consult with each other about the three homes we explored together,
19:10I'm keen to reconvene and see where things are at.
19:13Harvey, it's great to finally meet you.
19:15So did Mum and Dad tell you all about the houses that we checked out?
19:19There was a bit like a Goldilocks sort of story, wasn't there?
19:22There was one that might have been too big, one that might have been too small, and one that was just right.
19:29Shall we find out which one it was?
19:31We have made a decision.
19:32Have you?
19:33Well, don't tell me just yet.
19:34Okay.
19:34Let's talk through the houses first.
19:36Ready?
19:37Drum roll.
19:37Let's talk about house number one.
19:39Let's go.
19:40Okay.
19:41House number one.
19:42What did you think?
19:42I think house number one ticked pretty much most of the boxes in terms of space.
19:47Four bedrooms, two bathrooms, big backyard for Harvey to play, potential for a pool, and within the budget.
19:53So it was very different, obviously, from apartment living that you have been in, and I can imagine, yes, it's getting small fast.
19:59Yes.
20:00House number two.
20:01There was some work to be done, but I could see Dan slowly falling in love.
20:05It had so much character, and it was, like, before him, it was something that you could see yourself living in, but then it probably just wasn't big enough at the end of the day and too much of a project to...
20:16Right. Okay, so we're ruling that one out straight away.
20:19Yeah.
20:19Too small.
20:20Well, let's talk about house number three.
20:21Once we were there, you could see the family growing, and you could still do some work to it if you wished, but it had such wonderful character.
20:28House number three was incredible. We loved just the...
20:33The character.
20:33...neekness of it, the character. The only thing with that is it's probably a bit too expensive for us, probably just a little bit outside of our budget.
20:40So we did get it right straight off the bat.
20:43Yeah, it was number one.
20:49Yeah, we could just move into it straight away. It didn't require any work because renovating with a toddler, it doesn't seem like an idea.
20:55It's not a good idea. No. This is great news.
20:58We're off.
20:59Time for the big shift. Congratulations, and thank you.
21:02Thanks, Sally.
21:03It was my absolute pleasure. I loved it.
21:05Yeah! We're freezing out! Woo-hoo!
21:12Dan and Shay, congratulations, and all the best as you set out to create your perfect family home by the sea.
21:25We've been doing this.
