00:04the war's future hinges on one region in particular, the Donbas.

00:08Russia claims the eastern Ukrainian territory,

00:10although it doesn't fully control it,

00:12and says Ukraine must give it up in exchange for peace.

00:19U.S. President Donald Trump,

00:21who is attempting to broker a ceasefire deal,

00:23has called for the current front line to be frozen.

00:26What do you think should happen with the Donbas region?

00:36Ukraine has repeatedly refused to surrender any territory.

00:39So what is the Donbas,

00:41and why is it so important to Russia and to Ukraine?

00:45The Donbas is a region larger than Switzerland.

00:47It makes up 9% of Ukrainian territory

00:49and comprises two oblasts, Donetsk and Lugansk.

00:53In 2001, it was home to 6 million people.

00:57How many live there today is hard to tell.

00:59The region has been at war since the start

01:01of a Moscow-backed separatist insurgency in 2014.

01:05And protecting the mostly Russian-speaking population there

01:08was used by President Vladimir Putin

01:10to justify his invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

01:14Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky sees the Donbas as vital

01:25for the survival of his country.

01:27Russia is still unsuccessful in Donetsk region.

01:31Putin has been unable to take it for 12 years.

01:35And the constitution of Ukraine makes it impossible, impossible

01:40to give up territory or trade land.

01:43As of October 2025, Russia controls around 80% of Donetsk

01:47and almost all of Lugansk.
