00:00U.S. Spotify subscribers could get a pricey shock, report.
00:04Spotify, one of the most popular music streaming platforms in the world,
00:08is reportedly going to increase its prices in the United States in 2026.
00:13This comes shortly after the platform increased its pricing in other regions across the world.
00:18Moreover, the price increase in the United States could bring forth a huge bump in Spotify's income.
00:23A recent report indicates that Spotify will increase its prices in the United States in 2026.
00:30According to the Financial Times, this change is expected to arrive within the first quarter of the new year.
00:36Moreover, this increase will be the first from the service in the country since July 2024.
00:41The move comes after Spotify already increased its pricing for several regions across the globe.
00:47This included Switzerland, Australia, and the United Kingdom, among others.
00:52The current subscription cost for Spotify in the United States stands at $11.99 a month.
00:58When the service originally launched, it cost $9.99 per month.
01:04Notably, the increase over a time frame of 14 years has been minimal.
01:08Sources have not confirmed anything about the new pricing.
01:12However, JPMorgan experts state that even a $1 per month price increase
01:16would bring the company a projected $500 million a year in revenue.
01:20This would mean a huge deal for the platform, whose pricing has remained lower than most of its contemporary services.
01:28Moreover, the outlet's report states that major record labels have been urging Spotify and other music streaming platforms
01:34to raise subscription prices to adjust for inflation.
01:38For instance, the subscription prices for services like Netflix and HBO Max have increased substantially over the years.
01:46Perhaps Spotify's latest move will also allow it to better compensate the artists who rely on the streams from the service.
01:52The report follows Daniel X's decision to step down as CEO,
01:56with co-presidents Gustav Söderström and Alex Nordstrom set to take over as co-CEOs.
02:02Nordstrom recently addressed Spotify's U.S. price hikes,
02:05telling the Financial Times the company will raise prices in each market at the right time based on local conditions.
