00:00I unfortunately had to move back with my family after my most recent breakup.
00:15He and I were living in Boston together in an apartment we got.
00:18Just a little word of advice.
00:20Never sign a lease with someone who you recently got into a relationship with.
00:24He was not the person I thought he was.
00:27My parents live in western Massachusetts.
00:30If you've ever been to Massachusetts, you'd know the more west you get, typically the more rural it gets.
00:35I'm not a big country girl.
00:36I like to be in or near a major city, especially since I'm in my 20s still.
00:41My parents' area is super boring.
00:44I'm hoping I'm only here temporarily until I find another apartment I can afford myself.
00:49Though I'll be staying away from Boston for reasons.
00:52I had to get a job back at the urgent care facility I used to work at before I moved.
00:56They welcomed me back excitedly, even if it is just temporarily until I move again.
01:02The trade-off with this job, though, is that I tend to work undesirable hours, meaning overnights.
01:07Though the shifts are easy, they're boring, and they entirely mess up my sleep schedule and social life.
01:13Not that social life is even the best around here.
01:15After my shifts, sometimes I'll stop for what's considered my dinner, usually takeout since not much is open at these hours.
01:24Though this morning, I got out at 4am, and there's a bagel place that opens at that time, and they serve a lot of types of food.
01:31So I stopped by there and grabbed a chicken sandwich and a salad.
01:34I was going to eat it once I got home.
01:36I also had to make a pit stop for gas as well.
01:40I stopped at the local Shell station, one of the few gas stations open at this hour that was on the way home.
01:45The parking lot for this station is huge, and yet I hardly ever see any other cars in there, even during the day.
01:51I went inside to pay cash to save a little money.
01:55I went back outside to the pump, and there was now another car at one of the other pumps.
01:59It was a blue sedan.
02:02A guy got out of the car as I was walking over to the pump I was at.
02:05As I began fueling, I noticed him start to fuel up as well.
02:10I guess he locked the handle in place so that it would automatically keep dispensing gas without him holding it,
02:15because he walked through the two pumps to my side, and then said to me,
02:19Want to see a funny trick?
02:21I immediately hated this interaction.
02:24Still, for some reason, I said, What's the trick?
02:27He then started doing that stupid old trick where you pretend you're pulling your finger off with your other hand by just folding it down.
02:34He kept looking down at his hands and then back at me with this kind of sarcastic-looking expression,
02:40as if he knew what he was doing was stupid, but honestly, I couldn't tell.
02:44I fake laughed so that he'd go away, but he didn't stop.
02:48He kept doing the trick, even after I looked away and tried my best to pretend not to notice anymore.
02:53When I felt the click of the gas nozzle indicating that the tank was full, I was so relieved.
02:59I quickly relatched the nozzle to the pump and hurried inside for my change.
03:03When I came back outside, the man wasn't in sight anymore, yet his car was still there,
03:09and the hose was still pumping gas into his car.
03:11I didn't want to stick around to catch his attention again.
03:15I got back in my car, though just out of paranoia,
03:18I checked the back seats just to make sure he wasn't hiding back there.
03:22I locked the doors, and then I was back on the road.
03:25I was home in about five minutes after that.
03:28I was so excited to eat my 4.30 a.m. dinner.
03:32I picked up the spare from my parents' hiding spot,
03:35unlocked the door, and then quickly hid it back in its hiding spot.
03:38I locked the door once I entered, as I always do.
03:41I went straight to the kitchen to eat.
03:44I make sure to be quiet when I get home late so as not to wake up my parents.
03:48We only have two cars in the family, so I share my mom's car.
03:52I didn't need a car in Boston anyway,
03:54but since I moved back, I had just been using the hidden spare key
03:57they would hide in the front to let myself in.
04:00As I was at the table eating, I heard the front door being unlocked,
04:03and then opening and closing.
04:06I stopped chewing and froze to listen.
04:09With a mouth full of food, I said,
04:11Mom? Dad?
04:13No answer.
04:15I didn't hear any footsteps or anything.
04:18I hurried out of the kitchen to take a peek in the foyer.
04:21No one was in there.
04:23I felt like my heart was in my throat.
04:25I ran up the stairs to my parents' room and barged in.
04:29I was horrified to see both my parents in bed,
04:32and they were both awoken to my very forceful opening of the door.
04:35I said very quietly but in a clear panic that someone just came inside the house.
04:40My dad jumped out of bed and hurried downstairs.
04:44I cautiously followed behind him.
04:46He turned on all the lights of every room we passed,
04:49then he went out front to check for the spare key, and it was missing.
04:53My mom and I were absolutely horrified,
04:56yet my mom still found the time to lecture me for not checking my surroundings before rehiding the key.
05:01My dad began searching every room in the house, and we followed.
05:05When he was done checking my older brother's room,
05:08he left to continue searching and left the lights on in here.
05:11I stayed behind in this room,
05:13and decided to check a couple of the spots that I felt my dad had missed,
05:17because I know internally I didn't expect to find anyone.
05:20I checked under the bed, and then I checked the closets.
05:24Nothing.
05:25So I went downstairs to the main floor.
05:28It seemed my dad was already checking the basement.
05:31I was honestly horrified to go into the basement right now,
05:34even with my dad down there.
05:35So I stayed on the middle floor with my mom.
05:38But curiosity still got me,
05:41and I went to the dining room,
05:42which is adjacent to the foyer by the front door.
05:45I got down on my knees and looked under the table,
05:48and there he was.
05:49It truly did not feel real.
05:52There was that man from the gas station,
05:54hiding under the dining room table.
05:56I recognized him instantly.
05:58I screamed as loud as I could,
06:00and in response, my mom started to scream too.
06:03My 65-year-old dad came up the stairs as fast as he could,
06:07ready to fight this intruder.
06:09The man came out from under the table,
06:11and began fending off my dad,
06:12who was at least 20 years his senior.
06:14And as my mom and I saw him overpowering my dad,
06:17we began doing whatever we could as well,
06:19hitting and punching at the man as my dad still held on to him.
06:23It was when all three of us were attacking him
06:25that he finally decided to retreat and fled through the front door.
06:29This was when we called the cops,
06:31and thank God for a quick response time.
06:34However, that man still had the key to the front door.
06:37That night, the police left a police car parked in our driveway
06:41to deter that man from coming back.
06:42My dad wedged a chair in front of the front door as well,
06:46and slept in the living room.
06:48The next day, he switched out the lot to the front door,
06:51and with that,
06:52my parents' days of hiding a key outside were over.
06:55I do feel guilty for bringing that dangerous man to my parents' house,
06:58and it was definitely on me for being careless.
07:01But honestly,
07:02I think that man followed me with his headlights off,
07:05because I didn't see any cars behind me the entire ride home.
07:08I'm happy for my and my family's safety, though.
07:11However, this just made me want to move out of here even more.
07:24I like driving at night,
07:26because there's nothing more that I hate than driving in traffic.
07:29I'm from New York,
07:31Long Island specifically,
07:32and the traffic here is truly unbearable.
07:35My brother lives in Florida,
07:37and I like to go down and visit pretty often.
07:39It's a long drive, though.
07:42Depending on when you leave,
07:43it could be upwards of 18 hours.
07:46I like to leave New York very early in the morning,
07:48like 2 a.m.,
07:49so that I could be out of all the high-traffic areas
07:51by the time any cars are on the road.
07:54So it was a Thursday morning at 2 a.m.
07:56that I was leaving home to get on the road.
07:58I stopped for my morning coffee at Dunkin' Donuts,
08:01knowing I had a long, grueling drive ahead of me.
08:05The reason I was driving and not flying
08:07was because I was going to be down there for a whole month,
08:09and I didn't want to rely on my brother
08:10to take me everywhere I needed to go.
08:13By the time I was off of Long Island,
08:15it was after 3 a.m.
08:17It was smooth sailing from Jersey.
08:20The drive from New York to Florida
08:21is very easy once you're out of New York.
08:24You take the I-95 all the way down.
08:27At about 4 a.m.,
08:29the hunger was starting to set in,
08:30and so I pulled off the I-95
08:32at the first sight of a food sign.
08:34I saw Wendy's on the sign,
08:36and so I figured I'd get breakfast from there.
08:39I skipped breakfast at the house
08:40because waking up so early,
08:42I feel like your brain doesn't have a chance
08:43to realize how hungry you are for a few hours.
08:46At least, that's me personally.
08:48I followed the signs to the Wendy's.
08:51I was in some random spot in Jersey.
08:54There were no streetlights here.
08:55I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere.
08:58Just about the only light was from my headlights.
09:01When I got to the Wendy's parking lot,
09:03some of the lights were on,
09:05and I saw a car in the parking lot,
09:07so I pulled into the drive-thru.
09:09The menu in the drive-thru was lit up,
09:11so I thought it was open,
09:12but I sat there for over a minute
09:14looking at the intercom,
09:16waiting for someone to greet me,
09:17but they didn't.
09:19I even said excuse me to no avail.
09:22I pulled out my phone
09:23and looked up this Wendy's,
09:24and wouldn't you know it,
09:25it didn't open until 6 a.m.
09:28And then, suddenly,
09:29three knocks at my window
09:30almost sent me out of my seat.
09:33I turned to my right,
09:34and there was a man outside my window,
09:36smiling.
09:37He motioned for me to lower the window.
09:40I didn't really feel comfortable doing that,
09:41so I just cracked it open
09:43just enough to hear him.
09:44He said the place isn't open,
09:46and I said,
09:47yeah, I actually just found that out.
09:49He then told me that he was stranded.
09:51He pointed to the one other car
09:53in the parking lot over there,
09:54and said his battery died.
09:56He practically begged me
09:58to come help him jumpstart his car.
10:00I told him I don't have jumper cables,
10:02and he told me not to worry,
10:03he has them in his trunk.
10:05I took one more look at his car
10:07parked in the corner spot by the woods,
10:09and I said okay.
10:11I believe in karma,
10:12and I knew I'd have bad karma
10:14if I left this man stranded
10:15in a situation
10:16that I could have easily helped him out in.
10:18He backed away from the car
10:19so I could pull my car next to his.
10:22Since he was parked head in,
10:23I did the same
10:24to align our hoods as close as possible.
10:26I got out from my car
10:28after popping my hood.
10:29He went to go pop his hood
10:31and grabbed his jumper cables.
10:33After we connected the cables
10:34to the respective terminals,
10:36I started my car again.
10:38We gave it a minute
10:39before I told him
10:40he should go try starting his car.
10:42He took his sweet time walking inside,
10:44but when he tried starting it,
10:46the car didn't start.
10:47So we gave it another couple of minutes,
10:49and then he tried it again.
10:51Still nothing.
10:53This was weird
10:54considering he had just been driving the car,
10:56so his battery shouldn't need that long
10:57to get enough of a charge to start again.
10:59The guy then asked me to hang on
11:02as he walked away
11:02and got on his phone.
11:04He started speaking in Spanish
11:05in a pretty low volume.
11:07I can't really understand Spanish,
11:09so I wasn't even bothering
11:10trying to hear what he was saying.
11:12He came back to me after his call
11:14and said that his friend said
11:15to give it a few more minutes
11:16and try one more time.
11:17I said okay.
11:19I was trying to do the right thing,
11:21but I was also hoping
11:22this wasn't going to eat up
11:23much more of my time.
11:25But the last thing I was expecting
11:26was hearing the aggressive sound
11:28of two pickup truck engines
11:29flooring it into the parking lot,
11:31one from either side of the building.
11:33I instantly put it together.
11:36I said oh shit under my breath
11:38as I removed the jumper cables
11:39from my battery
11:40and shut the hood in a hurry.
11:42But it was too late.
11:43The two trucks pulled up
11:44behind my car,
11:45trapping me in.
11:46I had to think on my feet.
11:48I looked at the man
11:49who was still smiling at me,
11:51but now the smile looked
11:52and felt much more nefarious and evil.
11:55The look he gave me
11:57was so unsettling
11:58and it's engraved into my memory.
12:00I locked my car with my key fob
12:02and darted into the woods.
12:04I ran in the dark,
12:05cutting up my shins
12:06and God knows what.
12:08I tripped over something
12:09on the ground
12:10and at that point
12:11I took that as the time
12:12to lay down
12:12and make myself as tiny as possible.
12:15I heard a few men yelling
12:16in Spanish somewhere in the woods.
12:19I was so scared for my life
12:20as the voices got closer.
12:21I don't think it gets
12:23any more tense
12:24than what I was experiencing
12:25in that moment.
12:27I didn't know how many there were,
12:28I didn't know if they were armed,
12:30but I heard at least three voices.
12:32Then the voices started
12:33fading away
12:34back into the distance
12:35and I felt a sense of relief
12:37until the sound of my car alarm
12:39going off in the distance.
12:42All of my stuff
12:43was packed in the back of my car.
12:45Hundreds of dollars
12:46worth of clothes,
12:47shoes,
12:48watches,
12:48bracelets.
12:50I started making my way
12:51back to the parking lot
12:52crouching down.
12:54By the time I got close enough
12:55to look into the lot,
12:56I could see it was just my car there.
12:59All three other vehicles were gone.
13:01I ran out to my car
13:02and it was anyone's worst nightmare.
13:05My rear window was shattered
13:07and all of my stuff was gone.
13:09Basically 80% of my entire wardrobe,
13:12just stolen.
13:13My suitcase in the trunk
13:15and all the bags in the back seats.
13:17Everything.
13:18I actually started to shed tears
13:20out of pure stress.
13:22I called the police
13:23and explained everything.
13:25The officers on scene
13:26told me they would have to get
13:27the CCTV footage
13:28from the Wendy's
13:29when they opened.
13:30After taking all of my info,
13:32I was told I didn't need to stay in town
13:34and they would be in touch.
13:36I was about two hours from home.
13:39I turned around
13:40and drove home.
13:41It was the most stressful,
13:43depressing,
13:43and to feed a drive of my life.
13:46To make matters worse,
13:48I was contacted
13:48by the police department in Jersey
13:50and they told me
13:51the vehicle in the Wendy's lot
13:52had a fake license plate
13:54and the two pickup trucks
13:55didn't have plates.
13:57He told me
13:57they were still going to do
13:58what they can,
13:59but I knew that was just him
14:00trying to give me
14:01a sense of hope.
14:02My stuff was never found.
14:04Those bastards got away with it.
14:07Like I said,
14:08I believe in karma
14:09and I hope those pieces of filth
14:11got what was coming to them.
14:13We've all taken a long car trip,
14:23haven't we?
14:24We've all passed
14:25that rest area sign
14:26multiple times,
14:28wondering if we could make it
14:29another 20 minutes or not
14:30before having to take
14:31a pee break or stretch.
14:33Sometimes you're lucky
14:34and get one of those
14:35huge rest areas
14:36with the big buildings
14:37with food and everything.
14:38But most other times,
14:40depending on where you are,
14:41you'll be lucky to get
14:42a little one
14:42with a tiny building
14:43just for restrooms
14:44and nothing else.
14:46Well,
14:47I was on a long road trip.
14:48A 15-hour road trip,
14:50actually.
14:51And a big chunk
14:51of that drive
14:52was overnight.
14:53I won't say from where to where
14:55because I don't really think
14:56that matters much.
14:57But I will say
14:58that I was in some
14:59bum-fucking area
15:00on the east coast
15:01of the U.S.
15:02It was late at night
15:03and I was powering
15:04through the drive.
15:05Not many cars
15:06on the road
15:06at this hour.
15:07In fact,
15:08it was a pretty rare scene
15:09to see another car
15:10on the road this late.
15:12I was reaching
15:13that uncomfortable point
15:14in the ride
15:14where I had to use
15:15the bathroom
15:15and I was just getting
15:16overall antsy
15:17in my seat
15:18from sitting for so long.
15:20I started keeping
15:21an eye out
15:21for a rest area sign
15:22and when I saw
15:23that familiar blue sign,
15:25it felt like
15:26a saving grace.
15:28So,
15:28a few miles later,
15:29I veered off
15:30into the rest area.
15:32It was a small one,
15:33but there was
15:34a restroom building
15:35and that's all I needed.
15:36There were no trucks
15:37parked here.
15:38I m pretty sure
15:39they could only stay
15:40overnight at designated
15:41truck rest areas.
15:43But there was another car
15:44in the parking lot.
15:45I considered the possibility
15:46that whoever it was
15:47was asleep in their car.
15:49As I got out from my car,
15:51I stretched a bit
15:52and on my way
15:52to the bathroom,
15:53I looked at the other car
15:54in the lot,
15:55but the windows
15:56appeared to be tinted
15:57so I couldn t see
15:58if someone was inside
15:59of it or not.
16:00Not that it was
16:01a big deal in the moment,
16:02I was just curious.
16:04I got inside the bathroom
16:05and I was faced
16:06with a strange sight.
16:08There was a man
16:09standing in the corner
16:10of the bathroom
16:11with his head
16:11looking down
16:12and his back
16:13towards me.
16:14At first,
16:15I thought he was
16:15using the urinal,
16:16but I quickly realized
16:17he wasn't even facing
16:18the closest urinal.
16:20He was literally
16:21just facing
16:21the corner of the wall.
16:23I paused
16:24and I didn't know
16:25whether to say something
16:25or not.
16:26I almost said
16:27are you alright,
16:28but the scene
16:29was just too weird.
16:30I had to walk
16:31closer to him though
16:32to get to the stall
16:33and honestly,
16:34I was almost scared
16:35to get near him.
16:37I just tried to mind
16:38my business
16:38and keep a normal pace.
16:40I walked into the stall
16:42and closed the door.
16:43Honestly though,
16:44I couldn t go to the bathroom
16:45with someone else
16:46in the room.
16:47I m one of those people.
16:49It was just too dead silent
16:50in there.
16:51It was weird.
16:52I stood in the stall
16:53for like a minute
16:54trying to at least pee,
16:56but I couldn t for some reason.
16:57I flushed the toilet anyway
16:59and left the stall.
17:01But now,
17:02the man had turned around.
17:03He was still standing
17:04in the same spot,
17:06but now he was facing me.
17:08I could see his face
17:09and he was looking at me.
17:11I m not one to ever judge
17:12someone s appearance,
17:14but this man was the scariest
17:15looking man I d ever seen.
17:17There was something
17:18so unsettling about his face,
17:20specifically his eye region.
17:22The expression he had
17:24was a blank stare.
17:25I hadn t had a social interaction
17:27in over 10 hours
17:28and this caught me
17:29way off guard.
17:31Instead of saying anything,
17:33I quickly turned
17:33and headed out of the bathroom.
17:36I got to my car
17:37and wasted no time
17:38turning it on
17:39and backing it up.
17:40As I looked in the rearview mirror,
17:42I saw that man
17:43walking in the direction
17:44of my car.
17:46I drove fast away
17:47to get him out of my sight.
17:49I was relieved
17:49to get back on the highway.
17:51However,
17:51that was the only relief I got.
17:53I still had to use the bathroom.
17:55I was sure
17:56it would only be another
17:5720 minutes or so
17:58till the next one.
18:00I could hold it.
18:01I was right.
18:02It was about 20 minutes
18:03before I got to the next rest area.
18:05It was another
18:06nearly identical one
18:07as the other.
18:08Like I said earlier,
18:09most are pretty similar.
18:11No cars were in this one,
18:13thank God.
18:14I pulled into a spot
18:15right in front of the bathroom
18:16and hurried to the stall
18:17and let's just say
18:19I felt a lot better
18:20very quickly.
18:21As I was finishing up
18:22in the stall,
18:23I heard footsteps
18:24enter the room.
18:25I thought they'd stop
18:26at one of the urinals,
18:28but the footsteps
18:28came straight to the stall
18:30and stopped.
18:32I saw someone's shoes
18:33through the bottom crack
18:34of the door.
18:35They were literally
18:36standing on the other side
18:37of the stall.
18:38My first thought
18:39was that it was that guy
18:40from the other bathroom.
18:42He followed me.
18:43My social anxiety
18:44was handicapping me
18:45from saying anything initially
18:47until I finally
18:48mustered up the courage
18:49to say,
18:49someone's in here.
18:51No response to this though.
18:53Now,
18:54I knew I was in trouble.
18:56The only thing I could do
18:57was dial 911,
18:58put it on speaker
18:59so that the man
19:00could hear the operator
19:01say 911,
19:02what's your emergency?
19:04I said loud and clear,
19:05I'm being followed
19:06by a dangerous man.
19:07I feel threatened.
19:08As the operator
19:09asked my location
19:10and details,
19:11I answered everything
19:12in a loud voice,
19:14in a tone suggesting
19:15that I was implying
19:15a fuck you to the man.
19:17Thank God this worked,
19:19as the person turned
19:20and walked out
19:20of the bathroom.
19:22I told this to the operator,
19:24but said I still
19:25would feel safer
19:26waiting in here
19:27until police came.
19:28And that's what I did.
19:30A knock at the bathroom door
19:31from a police officer
19:32was my cue
19:33to safely come out.
19:35I described the man
19:36and the vehicle
19:36I saw at the other rest area,
19:38the creepy encounter,
19:39and then the second
19:40creepy encounter
19:41at this one.
19:42We checked my car as well
19:43to make sure
19:44it wasn't messed with at all.
19:46After determining
19:47that he was gone,
19:48the officer and I
19:49left the rest area
19:50at the same time,
19:51and eventually
19:51he turned off the highway.
19:53The rest of my road trip
19:55went normal,
19:56but damn
19:56was this a terrifying night.
19:58I'd never been followed before.
20:00I know with almost
20:01a hundred percent certainty
20:02that the person
20:03outside of the stall
20:04was the same creep
20:05that was in the first bathroom.
20:07It just feels extra weird
20:09because I'm a male.
20:10These things I feel like
20:11usually seem to happen
20:12to women,
20:13but I guess it can really
20:14happen to anyone.
