01:20Hello everyone, my name is Heather Hurt with the NRW where nerds rule the world and I am here today with Sarah Garcia who plays Jennifer Morales, a intelligence officer in the army for the new series The Hunting Party on NBC and Peacock. How are you today?
01:35I am so good and so happy to be talking to you.
01:37I am really appreciative of your time. Thank you for joining us today.
01:42The show is an interesting one. It's kind of a play on your classic crime drama but in kind of the backwards way.
01:51We're looking at it from the opposing end. What were your thoughts when you first joined this team?
01:56I was so excited. I've never been part of a show like this.
02:03This is a dream come true. And so to get to work with such amazing cast and crew and NBC, I was just sort of like, whoa.
02:18But it was such an exciting opportunity and something that I just couldn't say no to. It was great.
02:25Awesome. What about, let's talk about Jennifer a little bit. She's a character. She's headstrong but she's also very determined.
02:36And like a, I know headstrong and determined are the same word but it's like she's determined in a appeasement kind of way.
02:43What were your thoughts when you first read her? Who was she to you in your mind?
02:50Morales, so my process as an actor is to sort of put little parts of myself into my characters.
02:58I think that people have lots of different parts that make up who they are and so I like to inject a little bit of me into every character that I play.
03:04And when I read the audition sides and got to know who she was a little bit more, I realized I have a lot of room to make her who I want to be.
03:18I think the original description was she's optimistic and I was like there's so much room to play within that that I even found myself coming to set and just being my quirky sort of weird but focused self and found that I think that they ended up writing kind of to who I was showing up as.
03:43And that was really special to me because I had a lot of room to play and figure her out.
03:49There's a personal connection here.
03:51My brother was in the military and I always wanted to be in a military type role just to give a little nod to him and maybe work together in that capacity.
04:04And he really helped me understand what military life would have been like for her.
04:10And so that was all very helpful as I entered into the role.
04:14That's so sweet.
04:16That's so loving.
04:18We formally meet her in episode two and in episode three, we actually get to see a lot more of her personality.
04:27Short spoiler for March 17th, but we get to see more of her personality.
04:32And as we go on, we're going to see a little bit more and more.
04:36What are you most excited that the audience is going to learn about Jennifer Morales throughout this series?
04:42I hope that they, they see her.
04:47I hope that they see themselves in her a little bit.
04:49I think that she, she's, she's very excited to be posted onto the hunting party.
04:56It's a very exciting post for her.
04:58Um, she gets to work with her mentor, Bex Henderson.
05:01She really looks up to Bex.
05:03Um, she gets to be in this leadership position, sort of commanding the bullpen along with Odell.
05:10And, and I think that there's this energy where she, she really wants to prove that she is capable and that she is strong and can handle things.
05:22And, uh, we get to see that teased out all the way to episode nine.
05:26And then in episode nine, she gets to shine.
05:29She gets her moment.
05:30And I think that there's a beautiful scene with her and Bex where there's that, that mentor mentee relationship on full display.
05:36And, um, and that was like really special for me to film with Melissa because I look up to Melissa too.
05:43So it really wasn't that far of a stretch for me.
05:47Oh, it's probably turning into one of the sweetest interviews I've ever done.
05:53Um, uh, her role within, as you said, she, she is this leader of the, of the bullpen itself.
05:59Um, what, can you explain her role in a, in a, in a more precise way than, you know, we just see her as this, this tech guru.
06:07She, and she gets to play with phone books a little bit, but what is, who is she truly to this team?
06:14She is the information.
06:16She's the one who is tracking down, literally tracking on digitally, tracking the whereabouts of these serial killers.
06:28Um, their, their path.
06:30Um, she's, she's taking all the information and funneling it to the team.
06:37And in that sense, she's an integral part of the team because.
06:40Um, without her digital eyes and ears, sometimes the, the team on the ground, the boots on the ground team, um, can get, things can get a little dicey for them.
06:51So, you know, sometimes she's on, she's on comms a lot, just telling them where to go, telling them what to do.
06:57And I think that they grow to trust her through that.
07:00I think that there's like a real trust that builds despite all the mistrust that is going out around between everyone, including the team members.
07:10Yeah, it's kind of a cycle of, of, uh, of crazy going on in there a little bit.
07:15Um, my last question is just a fun one for you.
07:18Who is other than Bex?
07:19I kind of feel like that's cheating.
07:21Who is your favorite relationship between Jennifer and the rest of the team?
07:26Oh, do me dirty.
07:28I can't do that.
07:30I can't choose just one.
07:32They're all, the relationships are all unique.
07:34And I, and I will say, you know, she's got this, um, brother, older brother, younger sister relationship with Odell.
07:42And she really likes to tease him and, and get him out of his shell.
07:45She's got this mentor relationship with Bex.
07:48She's got this kind of like dad relationship to Hassani.
07:52Hassani is basically everybody's dad on the show.
07:55Um, and then Josh, she sees his like her, her peer, Josh plays Shane and she sees as her peer.
08:02She's kind of got this little rivalry because he was in a different section of the military than her.
08:07But as the series progressed, you do see them getting a little friendly and kind of, um, we have this understanding.
08:16We, we both, we both served.
08:17And so there's a respect there.
08:21Lovely, lovely.
