01:28For this challenge we want you to transport us to the year

01:35Welcome to your avant-garde challenge
01:37I haven't had experience creating avant-garde my aesthetic is a little bit more elegant and timeless
01:46My interpretation of avant-garde is weird shaped over the top design
01:52But to other people could be like oh what the hell is that?
01:55But i'm hoping i don't get the what the hell is that because i've been getting what the hell is that
02:00Take a look at these cutting edge materials that were created right here at tmu's design and technology lab
02:07Transparaprint camo foil uv foam and gritted cotton
02:12This week you'll be working with them
02:17The fabrics look amazing but i've never actually worked with them so i'm a bit skeptical
02:23But you won't be century hopping solo this week you're working in
02:32Teams
02:36I don't like teams i have never been a team player
02:43For this challenge each team must incorporate two of these printed materials into their designs
02:48Leland and delane as our two challenge winners you get to pick your teams oh my god
02:57Choose wisely because this week two designers from the losing team will be out
03:05I think this is a very high pressure week it's gonna suck to see two people go so i'm hopeful that's not me

04:30Leland you get first pick of material i'm gonna have to go uv foam we can do a lot with it create
04:36some really cool shapes we're gonna go with the camo foil nice i love a thermoplastic so i'm in
04:43That means team forward you get gritted cotton
04:47Each one of you must incorporate both of your team's materials and as a team the collection must be cohesive

05:06First pick of models okay no drama just flip them over
05:09I feel really confident with my team
05:12Avant-garde is one of my favorite things to do but it's a little scary relying on other people two people are going home this week
05:19Okay, are we happy with this?
05:20Yes
05:21This is already futuristic
05:23The transparent print is even stiffer than i thought it would be i'm not a fan
05:27But the uv foam brings an extra fun layer playing with light
05:32That's a royal blue right yeah like a royal electric blue but how do you tie this into that
05:38And i feel like almost water and earth a hundred percent blue to represent water
05:43brownish transparent print as a birth
05:46So the story that we've come up with is that in a hundred years our resources are finite
05:52It's the search for water and earth it's like a love letter to like the element yeah
05:58First thing i will say i think we should stick with that color palette
06:01Yes
06:02I know that the grid cotton will be really easy to work with but the foil camouflage might be a bit tricky
06:07It gets very crinkly no matter what you do with it
06:10realistically in a hundred years we could be in a very dystopian military-like world our inspiration
06:17is futuristic dystopianism very bold shoulders very clean lines and structure i'm seeing this as
06:24like a protective fabric like an arbor i want to make thigh-high boots high-waisted shorts and a
06:31jacket with a dramatic collar i'm envisioning that she's a warrior perfect yeah
06:36We're not sure what the weather is like in the future so i'm thinking about
06:42neoprene body suits and then i wanted to use the uv foam as the parts that would come down
06:49they would be doing the cascade yeah i'm so happy with my team we have charles leland foster and maya
06:57these guys are deadly so little feather the specific reason that i wanted you a part of our team is i
07:02think that you'll really kind of come alive when we have a material that isn't a sewing thing you
07:07can create some great shapes you can do some gluing no you don't just do arts and crafts i don't want
07:15nothing falling off on the runway okay guys dimes up let's go shopping
07:21hey time travelers hey the brief said avant-garde and you guys have to use both of your materials
07:33in each design and keep cohesion top of mind got it yep each of you have 600 to spend and 30 minutes
07:42to shop get going so our colors we're going for bronze black nudes our team's color palette is
07:54very earthy browns with transparent textures what do you think about this for the coat yes
08:00i'm creating a voluminous coat that has transparent material to draw attention to the uv foam i really
08:06love that that pink is too pink the pink is way too pink yeah our group is going with colors from the
08:13camo foil because everyone is going for colors i'll just go for black and incorporate this i'm very
08:19comfortable in designing an avant-garde so i'm making a structured military type blazer with pants this is
08:26my challenge i've got this how's it going good i'm picking up the pinks in our collection this fabric is
08:33very elegant what's going to make it feel futuristic the structure i'm going for a line skirt with a
08:40pointy asymmetrical top it's spaceship couture all right make sure it's futuristic yeah i need super
08:49stretch and silver i don't like this challenge i don't do avant-garde cuts you know and silhouettes
08:56but i am making a square shoulder chainmail body armor with silver fabric so it's protecting my
09:05model because it's the end of the world apparently this is amazing designers you have less than 10
09:12minutes it's not that if you lean into the green in the right way you think the yellow goes with all
09:17this yeah time's up i will see you all back at the work room team challenge let's do this team forward
09:30let's do it here's our materials oh i can't wait to play with this whoa this is incredible
09:38these materials are ugly i don't i don't like them it's not gonna be easy to keep it smooth yeah i'm
09:49gonna try to keep it as straight as possible i'm so excited me too i've worked with unconventional
09:56materials like this gosh i think like when i was in grade seven at my father's appliance store for some
10:02reason fabric and material always spoke to me and now i've become known for my oversized boxy jackets
10:10so this jacket has to be perfect because i would love to finally get that one this week i love this
10:18coat okay you guys what do you think of this structure wow oh yeah this could be a very costuming
10:27cosplay-ish challenge and that's my wheelhouse so i'm making a pointed shoulder bustier with a matching
10:35sleeve that i'm going to turn into a glove but the real selling point is these giant wide leg pants
10:40almost like a gliding queen amidala moment this is going to just be like one side of the pant leg and
10:46they're going to be really wide i finally got this whole thing pleated i'm feeling good about my design
10:53i'm the only one who hasn't been on the bottom or the top a lot of the work i do is one of a kind
10:59pieces so maybe this will be enough to get the judges to notice me i gotta work faster if i'm gonna
11:06get things done tonight so i know this isn't quite an avant-garde look my look is definitely giving
11:12futuristic i am making a mosaic corset dress super cool especially with all the metallic details i just have
11:20to make sure it looks expensive and not just a craft project it's way better right yeah
11:28i really don't like this fabric little fair thing i need to take a minute away from mine how's yours
11:35going this is my neoprene test i don't know that this spiral is going to work in the neoprene
11:42could work but you might need to just shorten this area to actually create more of a circular shape
11:48i'm super intimidated and surrounded by so many talented people and everyone has an opinion i just
11:56feel out of my realm i'm feeling overwhelmed right now it's a lot of critiquing at one time everything
12:02you have pinned looks all right okay got it i got it i got it i just need some space okay okay i just
12:10don't want to let my team down i know that they think i'm the weakest link however i'm really trying
12:20we all just want you to do well i just have to build up my confidence
12:23then you got this all right
12:32i want my look to be the look that's embracing the yellow from this camouflage foil but i can't
12:37be head to toe yellow i don't want to stand out i don't want to be the sore thumb my look is the most
12:42saturated in yellow nobody else is making anything with yellow in it i'm not cohesive with everybody
12:48else we want to figure out where we can use this in your look okay you know what though i'm doing
12:52a yoke maybe i do my top yoke in this oh okay i really like that most of our team is actually doing
12:59quite well everyone has a clear vision so i am not worried about our team being on the chopping block
13:05because our fabrics are solid and we have a very good story five minutes everybody oh wow let's go home guys okay

13:27come on over why don't we just have a quick check-in start of the day we're doing avant
13:31guard this week with custom fabrics we need these moments of like color and shape to make us feel
13:37something it's not just going to be like clean lines in the future i agree i'm really happy with
13:42our team's idea i'm making a three-piece look with a big white pant a short bomber with big shoulder pads
13:50i think it's completely doable to bring in everybody else's ideas so i'm feeling pretty good
13:56i forgot what our team name is can we just go one by one and just say like what we're going to be
14:04doing today so i am still doing a corset i will do with my chain nail silver fabric pants and long sleeve
14:11to the floor turtle head neck um i had no idea that kat even had sketched out pants kat has seemed to
14:21shift her design and i don't know what is going down the runway so i don't know how i'm supposed to match it
14:26it's not me to do crazy shapes that go everywhere so why should i do that it's gonna be fun
14:38what do you think fancy foster yes girl that is avant-garde i love that i'm super excited i'm still
14:47working on my vision but this is a team challenge and i've incorporated all of the teams
14:56suggestions but it's still me at the end of the day i just need to figure out how to keep the shape
15:02on the suit this is going well but i need it done for the thing oh i know i'm behind i finished the
15:10shorts finished the best finished the boots i finished the crop top i still have so much to do
15:17we also need to have elements that tie us together so i'm just going to make it work and hope i'll be
15:23able to stand out in a good way i just i hope it's avant-garde enough good morning designers hey

15:35hi there hello how are you nice to meet you it's a bit complicated because i've done all this pleating
15:42it looks so good yeah it's really flattering oh i like it awesome tell me what's going on i still see my
15:50favorite fabric on the table i know it's gonna go somewhere it is it is i don't make a lot of menswear
15:56but i do have a background in tailoring for this look i want to show something that is conceptual
16:03futuristic and well thought out i have to figure out how i'm going to implement this into that does this
16:10feel okay how does this feel comfort-wise oh my god i'm so sorry this fabric is very elegant it's not
16:17giving me future the structure will give you the future so this boning would be sitting here just to
16:24kind of give it that asymmetrical look what you're not doing is making an evening gown and then sticking
16:33these on it right yeah you're not doing that no future i have a guard awkward pieces awkward pieces
16:41oh my god am i not good to me it's art avant-garde couture so even though aurora looks very concerned
16:51i feel like i got this it looks crazy but it's not look that is incredible wow yeah let's see our family
17:01this collection is cohesive modern avant-garde but still within the world of believability i see it i see the
17:08vision all five of us checking in with each other is giving everybody else confidence even little
17:13feather has confidence honey you're eating it's so good a little feathers outfit might win the runway
17:20this week i still need to top stitch this so it'll actually do what it's supposed to do and you can
17:26hold it cat we have pants oh yes delaine can you come over with your model yes come ooh is this a knit
17:36yeah wow is this a knit you haven't seen it i haven't seen it up close like this how are these ones having
17:43conversation because this is extremely structured yeah and this is very flowy all the details and
17:49everything gonna be here on the waist have you guys talked about your looks together at all these pants
17:58are perfect are they perfect for this challenge i don't know but i like them okay so just stop talking
18:06to me i think that we have to line up the models okay okay curtis can you run here to line the models
18:15bro can we put stuff together
18:24i don't even know what the is going on over there i see a lot of different kind of looks happening
18:30they will need to be put together more i have no idea what they're doing i'm just seeing a lot of
18:36colors going on take one last look right now because the fitting is officially over models i need
18:46you guys out okay you guys need to have like a little more urgency with making sure things are cohesive
18:53our group did not communicate as effectively as we should have it absolutely makes me nervous if i get
18:59put into the bottom because of other people's work i will lose my mind all right designers two people
19:06are out this week that's how much non-communication is going to cost you guys you have a few hours left

19:18i'm feeling good on my part but kat's outfit is a bit different from everybody else's and also namo's i

19:41is it straight is it like stiff i think when she walks it's gonna bounce a bit

20:03i need to do the hood the sleeve and the color do you like it yes add more it's wrinkling
20:10it's stiff as hell today is a runway day and i still have to do the bodice but it isn't working
20:16it's crinkly it's bent so i have to create a new one i don't think i have enough i might have

20:32i have two more flounces i'm gonna add to the back where's my model you still have to iron the plates
20:41down i am waiting and waiting your model is not here and they're not coming oh that is not what i
20:55want to hear not at this time not moments before the runway i've got someone else for you okay perfect

21:09i'm feeling the pressure and panic there's no time for the changes

21:34top stitch this all down all around the border at this point i'm very worried that she's not even
21:40gonna have a look on the runway this is a team challenge and two people they're going home this
21:43week but i'm not gonna let anybody sink if you want i can take this and top stitch around the whole
21:47thing at the industrial oh my god unfortunately nothing is working out oh my god nope the needle
21:55broke we're taping it we're taping it well the skirt is good thankfully i only have one change to do on
22:04my new model and that is to tighten the skirt this is a quick fix foster how you doing baby i'm good do
22:10you want to do a quick huddle yeah are you ready yeah yeah we can do it we can do it yeah this is good
22:16this is good uh the brief was that each look has to feature both materials prominently and i'm just
22:27seeing uv material where is the other material
22:32i expected more aurora's right we have to embrace this transparent print i'm just melting plastic all over

22:47you can start bringing your models over to the l'oreal paris glam room
22:54i'm excited to get your hair done i'm looking for a strong bold eye because we're 100 years in the
23:00future i'm gonna use the voluminous mascara i'm actually gonna use burgundy because it's really gonna
23:06accentuate have gorgeous blue eyes oh yeah i like that on the bottom yeah 10 minutes left everybody

25:03here he's the og makeup influencer he's a very big inspiration i know i'm super excited to be here
25:09we'll be scoring your designs as they come down the runway first up team fashion
25:22i feel amazing i was shooting for something really big and dramatic
25:32and oh my god i did it i'm really proud of my outfit this week
25:39my favorite thing about my outfit is that it gives that futuristic feeling that avant-garde look
25:51without being a costume i want to show the judges a bit more of my style and the way i like to create
25:59shapes i love the cut out in the back and the pants are the best thing i've done in this competition
26:12oh this week i feel i really did step up to the plate i am so proud of my look
26:20i finally get to show the judges the more conceptual side to my designs
26:32i am so happy this is the best thing i've ever made it's avant-garde
26:38i'm super confident it's perfect
26:54this jacket is exactly how i wanted it to look i wanted it to feel light but i wanted to feel
27:00heavy at the same time
27:07and i know for a fact when you see this jacket you will think of charles live
27:14i'm feeling confident about the runway the five of them looked great together everybody had a really
27:20cool concept they followed through with it and i think all five of these people are all in the same
27:27universe and now team forward
27:34i'm really proud of what i created the skirt is just it's everything and you can really see all
27:40the detail and mosaic work i put into the corset i probably could have pushed myself a little bit more
27:47however it's definitely giving future so i think i'm all right the future is here
27:53my model is a monaxi a caretaker who's here to defend all the people still living on earth 100 years
28:03from now she looks cool she looks badass i love the structure of the collar it is bold edgy unique
28:12i'm hoping they see my creativity
28:20to me this is avant-garde it is bold and out of this world
28:26i wanted to show the judges what i offer to this competition this is what i do
28:31i'm not feeling this one i really don't it's not perfect but it shows my aesthetic
28:47at least the chainmail bodysuit is perfectly fitted
28:51i'm really proud of this look i think the pointed skirt and the open vest in the front is perfect
29:03and this fun little cap is just the perfect way to tie it all together
29:06i'm not happy with myself it's not my best work the front looks good it's giving me that avant-garde
29:22look that i want but the back isn't finished
29:30yet another thing that i'm not happy with hitting the runway
29:33it feels crappy
29:40i am actually really proud of my team each of us really put so much work into the looks
29:46yes there were some unfinished things with nemo's dress but when the seconds count down there's not
29:52much you can do
29:55designers please step up to the runway
30:03you took us to a new time but now your future is in our hands only one team will be in

30:37you win some you lose some it was a very hard challenge team fashion you may be the winners of
30:46this challenge but i gotta tell you i'm not that impressed oh she's upset we're gonna get it and i was
30:55expecting a lot more however there were a few highlights we're gonna take a look at some of
31:02the top looks from this team
31:06oh foster you looked so shocked there i wouldn't consider myself an avant-garde designer walk us
31:12through this avant-garde look because your mom looks great we reference a hundred years ago
31:16even today so i felt that in a hundred years from now there are things that would still look
31:20back upon tailoring would be one of them our concept was about the scarcity of resources
31:26and i always find when something is scarce it's a luxury so man has this obsession with nature and
31:33earth as you are explaining your design i'm falling more in love with it the way the folds flow it's
31:40like really beautiful really divine i love the juxtaposition of the structure of the top and then
31:46the fluidity of the bottom it looks like it fits your model perfectly you really got it to mold on
31:53the body it was for a different model i'm not really sure what happened to him but he was a no
31:57show well you wouldn't know congratulations foster thank you so much judges and the next top look from
32:02this team oh my god that's me leland tell us about this look i specifically wanted to play with angles
32:10shapes and i wanted to do something that was really non-gendered i love the silhouette let's start with the
32:15shoulders shoulders are amazing there's just kind of a beautiful connection and symmetry with the
32:20lines here the pleats on the pants are so well executed it transported me i immediately started
32:27thinking about what character would this be in a movie but sometimes i think maybe is it too costumey
32:33it'll be interesting to see what comes down the runway from you in the next few weeks i know he can do
32:38costume however i want from this day forth for us to never say that word again thank you leland thank you so
32:45much thank you and now our final top look of this team
32:50charles you time traveled and you brought back some receipts i wanted to play with these biomorphic
32:56shapes and i wanted to create all these butterfly wings and have a return to nature yeah honestly i
33:02was blown away when i saw this come down the runway it's amazing it felt futuristic i'm so impressed
33:08definitely a beautiful piece artful imaginative both materials were standouts it wasn't like you were
33:14trying to fit them in you were trying to showcase them it was the perfect piece to close the show
33:19thank you so much charles foster leland you are our top designers of the week
33:27but only one of you will be the winner maya and little feather you're both still in you can all leave
33:34the runway congratulations congratulations we did it we did it we did it hello designers unfortunately you
33:49are the losing team let's bring out the looks that scored the lowest in your team's collection here's the
33:55first cat tell us about this look our story was it's like an apocalyptic situation so we need to
34:06protect ourselves so i did a full body suit of chain mail i'm really confused this does not feel
34:13futuristic at all i am a fan of a stretchy tight cat suit but a glittery fabric i just didn't think was
34:20aesthetically pleasing this is just bad taste and i know you can do way better thank you cat let's
34:28bring out the next lowest score the other room explained this look for us a hundred years from now
34:37our earth is damaged due to climate change resource extraction and if anyone understands that it's
34:45indigenous people so my thinking was she's a protector she's someone you look to for guidance and
34:51strength your heritage is beautiful your story is beautiful but the outfit simply isn't i commend you for
34:58using both fabrics but it just felt a bit chaotic for me i had trouble seeing these pieces jive together
35:07thank you and our final lowest score of the night
35:16namo your model wasn't able to continue wearing your design so they won't be coming out
35:24oh my gosh tell us what happened it was very tough working with the foil everything just fell apart
35:37and so the top wasn't finished so then i taped and glued on the edges glue on the model yeah glue on their
35:45skin yeah designers do not bring down dresses that are glued to models i'm beating myself up for it right
35:56now i feel for you and like i want to cry like with you like i was watching you as your model was
36:02walking down the runway i could see defeat within your eyes to be honest i felt like a burden already
36:09in this group because i wasn't picked at all so yeah i think we would all feel the same way honestly
36:18thank you namo thank you kat delarumic and namo two of you will be out delaine curtis and rome you're
36:30all still in designers you can all leave the runway
36:40that was a lot mama that was hard to lie yeah all right let's talk about who should be our winner
36:49if you look at someone like leland we've seen this consistent level of craftsmanship i love the cutout
36:54of the transparent print it kind of felt like fire i believe that we have a very talented designer here
37:00this outfit is absolutely incredible but it did feel a bit costumey and that is not where we really
37:07want to be going with leland i do think this challenge does require a bit of costume what about
37:12foster i mean his mom didn't show up when he's under pressure he can actually do better i thought
37:17foster did an amazing job no question and i also like the fact that there was a real gender fluid vibe to
37:25that i love the top the top was very sleek very futuristic charles his design was immaculate this
37:32was one of my favorite looks the shape it was definitely boundary pushing i thought it was a great
37:36utilization of the materials that headpiece was something that you would see on a red carpet i thought
37:43it was almost in a league of its own now who should be worried that they're going home tonight it's a tough
37:48one i really believe that namo's got talent but the craftsmanship was just really bad and very little
37:56about it screamed futuristic to me the top was i don't even know how that thing was on not well
38:04constructed business in the front and i was like panic in the back let's not forget cat that was
38:10atrocious i was like a bad home ec project it was an avant-garde i think the capelet was ill-fitting i
38:17would be embarrassed to walk down the runway with that but i just found cat's look much more
38:22aesthetically pleasing than dalarumix this felt like material thrown into a futuristic washing
38:29machine sometimes less is more it really was very disappointing bottom line is this is a runway and
38:37these outfits don't spark excitement it is embarrassing sucks i literally cried when yours went down the
38:45runway and i was thinking of all the indigenous girls watching just seeing that representation is so
38:51important it was a powerful moment okay it looks like we made our decisions let's bring the designers back
39:03foster charles and leland the top look tonight was innovative conceptual
39:10and inventive the winner of this challenge is
