00:04venerable hierarchs and clergy

00:08representatives of christian churches, communions and organizations throughout the world

00:18brothers and sisters in christ

00:22behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren

00:27to dwell together in unity.

00:31We are deeply moved that you have all responded positively

00:37to our humble invitation to honor through this joint pilgrimage

00:45the memory and legacy of the first ecumenical council

00:50held here at Nicaea 1700 years ago.

00:58Despite so many intervening centuries and all the upheavals,

01:05difficulties and divisions they have brought,

01:10we nevertheless approach this sacred commemoration

01:15with shared reverence and a common feeling of hope.

01:21For we are gathered here not simply to remember the past.

01:29We are here to bear living witness to the same faith expressed by the fathers of Nicaea.

01:38We return to this wellspring of the Christian faith in order to move forward.

01:47We refresh ourselves at these inspired waters of rest in order to become strong for the tasks that lie ahead.

02:01The power of this place does not reside in God passes away,

02:09but in God and yours forever.

02:12In Nicaea history bore witness to eternity,

02:18to the fact that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is true God of true God,

02:28consubstantial with the Father,

02:30O Moousios to Patry.

02:34Enchrined in the Nicaea's creed,

02:38such expressions distilled and present to all the faith of the apostles.

02:46Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

02:52the name Nicaea derives from the Greek word for victory,

02:57niki.

02:59When the fallen world thinks of victory,

03:04it thinks of force and domination.

03:08But as Christians,

03:10we are ordered to think differently.

03:14Our paradoxical sign of victory is the unconquerable sign of the cross.

03:23This is foolishness to the nations,

03:28a sign of defeat,

03:30but for us it is a supreme manifestation of the wisdom and power of God.

03:39We do indeed celebrate victory in this place,

03:45but it is a victory not of this world,

03:48and not as the world gives.

03:52The Holy Spirit fittingly chose this place

03:57to grant the church a heavenly and spiritual victory.

04:03The apostle John tells us,

04:07this is the victory that has overcome the world,

04:11our faith.

04:12As Christians,

04:14the apostolic faith which was expressed at Nicaea

04:19is our victory.

04:22By this faith,

04:25the tyranny of sin is abolished in our lives,

04:30the bondage of corruption is loosed,

04:33and earth is raised to heaven.

04:38The Nicene Creed acts like a seed

04:42for the whole of our Christian existence.

04:46It is a symbol not of a bare minimum.

04:50It is a symbol of the whole.

04:52Having the fervor of the faith of Nicaea

04:57burning in our hearts,

05:01let us run the course of Christian unity

05:04that is set before us.

05:08Let us hope to the end

05:10for the grace that is promised

05:13at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

05:18And finally,

05:19let us love one another.

05:22that with one mind we may confess

05:26Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

05:30Trinity, consubstantial and undivided.

05:35Amen.
