00:00¡Gracias!
00:30Seriously, a kilt, because you know with a kilt, you don't wear anything underneath.
00:35Mate, you didn't pack much, did you?
00:37No, mate, I don't need much, I just need my knowledge and that's all up here.
00:41We packed our bags and our spanners for another glow-trotting car-fixing adventure.
00:47Vamos!
00:48You see a photo?
00:49Yay!
00:50Sorry!
00:55We're hunting down some of the world's most iconic cars.
00:58That's it!
00:59Get much better than this!
01:02Oh, I can't believe we're standing here in front of an SP2.
01:06Leaning on local wheeler dealers, because he really wants it.
01:09Would you take the 30,000 euro?
01:11No, impossible.
01:12That's my way to do it.
01:14To rescue these national treasures on a wheel and a prayer.
01:17Please let me find a set of wheels, that's all I'm asking for.
01:21And make a few euros, pesos.
01:23I think we have a deal.
01:24Yes!
01:25And real as we go.
01:27I absolutely love it!
01:36Right then, fella, this is the only way to travel.
01:38It's not that bad, is it?
01:42Told you, it's lovely.
01:43You can just sit back, you can relax, watch the countryside and whip past the window.
01:48Watch the raindrops.
01:49Watch the raindrops.
01:50Well, we are heading north, and the further we go north...
01:52It's going to get worse.
01:55But I am looking forward to Scotland, mate.
01:56I mean, there is a lot that Scotland has going for it.
02:00Yes, Scotland does have some stuff going for it.
02:02It is going to be...
02:03Yes, please.
02:04Yes.
02:04Nothing scares Scotland like a tea cake.
02:07Like a tea cake.
02:08Oh, yes, you beauty.
02:10But we haven't come here just for the snacks.
02:13No, we're travelling through Scotland on the trail of its most famous car, the Hill Minim.
02:22Designed by engineering trio Tim Fry, Peter Ware and F1 driver Michael Parks, the Imp was Scotland's first and only mass-produced car.
02:31Built near Glasgow, it was full of brilliant innovations, including an all-aluminium Coventry Climax engine that was originally designed as a fire pump.
02:43But having been rushed into production, early imps were plagued with reliability woes, not least overheated engines.
02:51It was enough to help taint the car's reputation and overshadow the genius of its design.
02:56But here in Scotland, the Imp is a national hero, and we think it deserves to be celebrated.
03:06Have you had any bites on your search for a car?
03:08There's a few out there.
03:09Yeah.
03:10They're interesting.
03:11Well, let's be careful and let's try and find one that doesn't need too much work.
03:16I've already asked my UK contacts to look out for a suitable car, and I'm hoping a specialist in workshop here in Scotland may be able to help.
03:24So, that's where we're starting.
03:27Here we go.
03:28Nice.
03:28Good morning, Sterling.
03:30Fantastic.
03:31Cold and wet.
03:32Cold and wet.
03:33It has taken a mile to get her, isn't it?
03:34Mate, we could have literally got to Mexico quicker than it took to get her.
03:37We could have done.
03:38Just one second, one second, one second.
03:41Hello.
03:43Yeah, that, oh, that sounds good.
03:46Condition?
03:46OK, super.
03:49Oh, no, I'm really interested.
03:50I mean, look, I've literally just arrived in Stirling, Scotland.
03:54What?
03:55No way.
03:56Where?
03:57Are you kidding me?
03:58OK, I'll talk to you in a bit.
03:59Cheers, bye.
04:00Mate, honestly, that was a call from the auction.
04:05You're not going to believe this.
04:05I've found a car.
04:06Yeah.
04:07And I've got to go back and...
04:08Back where?
04:09Back.
04:09Where is it?
04:11Norfolk.
04:12Like, hundreds and hundreds of miles away.
04:16Auction?
04:17Come on.
04:17I've got an auction.
04:18That's your wheelhouse.
04:19My wheelhouse.
04:19I'm going to be in there.
04:21Get us a bargain.
04:22I'll be back.
04:22I know.
04:23I trust you.
04:25While Mike goes south, I'm heading to the outskirts of Stirling.
04:31I found these guys online who are massive imp enthusiasts.
04:35And apparently they've got a workshop, they've got a spare ramp,
04:38and all the gear we might need,
04:39if Mike actually does end up buying us a car.
04:44I mean, this is definitely it.
04:45I can see imps everywhere.
04:50John and Patrick own a garage dedicated to the restoration of Hillman imps.
04:56John, thanks so much for having us down here.
04:58I gather I'm in the right place, because there's imps everywhere.
05:01How would you guess?
05:03So one or two clues.
05:04Is this all you do, imps?
05:05Pretty much.
05:06Pretty much, imps.
05:07Pretty much.
05:08That's for the hunters.
05:09Mike's trying to buy us our own imp.
05:11I've got no idea when he's going to turn up.
05:13So in the meantime, have you got a kettle or maybe a cup of tea?
05:17John and Pat met at school
05:19and bonded over their shared love of this little motor.
05:23How about the love affair with imps?
05:24How long has that been going on?
05:26That's been over 40 years now.
05:28Has it?
05:28Yeah.
05:28Really?
05:29Wow.
05:29That's a long love affair.
05:30When we went down to Monte Carlo and back there.
05:34What?
05:35One of the most special feelings in the world was driving through Casino Square in Monte Carlo.
05:40And they all went like that with their cameras.
05:43Yeah.
05:43Because they hadn't seen two oz before.
05:45That would have really upset the Lamborghini owners, wouldn't it?
05:47Yeah.
05:48Yeah, certainly.
05:48Fantastic, isn't it?
06:00What a day.
06:01In Norfolk, I've arrived at Anglia car auctions near Kings Lynn.
06:06You're going to see sales like this almost every weekend up and down the country.
06:11The perfect place to come and buy that classic car.
06:14The imp I'm here to see has an estimate of just £3,000 to £4,000.
06:20There's loads of people, loads of people looking at the car, which shows there's a bit of interest in the hillman imp, doesn't it?
06:29If I was to walk over to it right now, start opening the doors, lifting the bonnet, people go, Mike's interested in that.
06:35So they could be interested in it and the price starts to climb.
06:40Right, now's my opportunity to get in there and have a closer look.
06:45The tyres look good.
06:47The interior's OK.
06:48With just over 230 road-going imps left in the UK, a good one is increasingly hard to find.
06:56This 1971 model has done just 68,000 miles and, on first glance, it presents pretty well.
07:03Let's look at this engine.
07:04This is an 875 engine.
07:07I'll be honest with you, the engine bay probably lets the car down.
07:11I think it'll really do with having all of this taken out, because that looks a bit of a mess.
07:16That's broken, rusted through on this side, so that one they're repairing as well.
07:24As this is an auction, I can't drive the car, so as it's been moved round to the rostrum, I'm going to try and get some intel on the mechanical condition.
07:36So the clutch feels good?
07:37Yeah.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Brakes feel good?
07:39Yeah.
07:39Yeah, it's biting nicely.
07:42OK, there's nothing nasty coming out the back.
07:45Looks sweet enough.
07:47Let's get in the auction.
07:47With no test drive and with a shabby-looking engine, this is a real risk.
07:55But we've restored him to sell him for around £8,000 to £9,000.
07:59I'm hoping I might be able to snatch a bargain.
08:04I'm going straight in.
08:06Ah, not the start I was looking for.
08:11That's me.
08:12Bye.
08:12Bye.
08:12Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:13Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:14Bye.
08:17The room's going mad for the car, but if I spend much more, we'll struggle to make
08:31a profit.
08:32One more.
08:39That's too much money now.
08:41It's too much money.
08:44Go on, then.
08:45Well, I'll let you know, thanks for all the cars and for the car.
08:49Thank you.
08:50I even got a round of applause for that, but I didn't pay too much money for it.
08:53Ah ha!
08:54You brought a yellow one!
08:57It's very mustard, isn't it?
08:58This is called Sundance Yellow.
09:01It actually looks really good on the outside.
09:04It's really good.
09:06Yeah.
09:06I'm very, very pleased with this purchase.
09:09¡Aha!
09:11¡He brought a yellow one!
09:13Es muy mustard, ¿no?
09:14Este es llamado Sundance Yellow.
09:17Es realmente muy bueno en el exterior.
09:18Es muy bueno, ¿no?
09:19Estoy muy, muy contento con este purchase.
09:22Hay algunas pequeñas cosas.
09:24Bien, claro.
09:25Así que, primero y más,
09:26se puede ver que algunos de los rubros
09:27alrededor del window han degradado.
09:31Seat tiene un rito en él.
09:32Es otro trabajo para ti, eso es.
09:33Sí, eso es fácil.
09:35Así que, yo me impresioné.
09:37¡Ah, mate!
09:39¡Ah, mate!
09:39¡Ah, mate!
09:39¡Ah, that is so disappointing!
09:41¡The outside's so nice!
09:43¡What's going on in here?
09:44I thought, well,
09:45if anyone's going to take an engine out,
09:46it'll be you,
09:47and then you can tidy all of this up.
09:49¡It needs it!
09:51As well as a tidy up,
09:53we'll have to do something
09:54about the inefficient cooling system,
09:56which was the main cause
09:57of the imp's overheating problems.
09:59I hope you got the car cheap.
10:01Oh, look.
10:02Guide price, 3,000 to 4,000.
10:05¿Is that what that says?
10:06So...
10:06Really?
10:07Yeah, go and watch me.
10:08Well, let's...
10:09Let's get it out on the road first.
10:10You wouldn't have paid
10:11the full whack, would you?
10:13I'll talk to you
10:14about the price of the car.
10:15Hmm.
10:16Something tells me
10:17you're holding this back
10:17for a reason.
10:22Keep coming.
10:23Keep coming.
10:24Yeah, nice.
10:26Yes, baby.
10:28Oh, mate,
10:28this little car
10:29looks absolutely fantastic.
10:32Let's go.
10:32Right then, son,
10:38put your slipper down.
10:40I hate to break it to you,
10:41but my foot is down.
10:42Well, it's only a little
10:43Coventry Climax engine.
10:44I mean, it's 800 and something cc.
10:47The imp's lightweight
10:49aluminium motor
10:50was way ahead of its time.
10:52Unfortunately,
10:53the cooling system wasn't.
10:55We're actually running
10:56at quite a bit of temperature
10:57at the moment.
10:58They all overheated.
10:59It was one of their
11:00biggest single issues.
11:01They all overheated.
11:03The engine feels
11:04like it's fluffy.
11:06I think there's dirt
11:07in the carburetor
11:07or something.
11:08Yeah, it feels like a car
11:09from the 1970s.
11:11It certainly does.
11:12I was actually looking
11:13at a bunch of reviews earlier
11:14from when they were brand new.
11:16There's a guy
11:16that did a road test.
11:18During his road test,
11:19he said the passenger seat
11:20came loose,
11:21the ashtray fell out,
11:22water was coming
11:23in through the window
11:24and, of course,
11:24it overheated.
11:25They had so many
11:27problems with production.
11:29It's like it was
11:29rushed out the door,
11:31you know,
11:32and they just never
11:32recovered from that.
11:33You think about it,
11:34a small,
11:35lightweight,
11:37rear engine,
11:38rear wheel drive,
11:39slanted engine,
11:40low centre of gravity,
11:42you know,
11:42all of the ingredients
11:43could have made this
11:44an amazing car.
11:46I reckon that's
11:47what we should do.
11:48I reckon we should make it
11:49the car that it should have been.
11:52So,
11:53£3,000 to £4,000
11:54guide price.
11:55Yeah.
11:56I cannot wait
11:57to hear what you
11:57accomplished on this.
11:58So,
11:59I was standing there,
12:00right,
12:01with my hand in the air
12:02and I was still bidding
12:04well into the £5,000.
12:06What?
12:07You went into the £5,000?
12:09No,
12:09I went well into the £6,000
12:11and then there's
12:12the auction fees
12:12on top of that.
12:14Hang on,
12:15what have we paid
12:16for this car?
12:17This car owes us
12:18£7,125.
12:21£5,000.
12:23So,
12:24double,
12:25that's double,
12:26that's double
12:26the guide price.
12:27I got carried away.
12:28I overpaid
12:30for the car,
12:31which means
12:32we need to
12:32underpay
12:33for all the repairs.
12:34Oh,
12:35my goodness me.
12:42Calm down,
12:43calm down.
12:44I'm coming.
12:44Do you know what,
12:48mate?
12:49I,
12:49well,
12:49I say I slept
12:50on it last night.
12:51I actually didn't sleep
12:52that much
12:52because I was having
12:52nightmares about
12:53what you've spent
12:54on this car.
12:55I can't believe
12:55you spent over
12:56£7,000 on a Hillman Imp.
12:58I mean,
12:58mate,
12:59it's a Hillman Imp.
13:00A 50-year-old
13:01Hillman Imp.
13:02Whoa,
13:02whoa,
13:02whoa.
13:03Show some respect
13:04to the Hillman Imp.
13:05When it's done,
13:06it's going to be great.
13:07How are we going
13:07to turn a profit?
13:09If we kick
13:10costs down,
13:11I'm still confident
13:12we'll come out
13:12of this the right side up.
13:14Blimey,
13:18you boys don't
13:18mess about,
13:19do you?
13:19Hello.
13:20Hello.
13:20Chaps,
13:21how are you?
13:21This is Mike,
13:22everybody.
13:22Nice to meet you.
13:23Pat,
13:23Pat,
13:24Pat,
13:24John.
13:25I don't know you.
13:26And Willie.
13:27Nice to meet you.
13:29Pat,
13:29John,
13:29and Willie.
13:30How's it,
13:30mate?
13:30Willie's given us
13:31a little bit of help.
13:32More hands,
13:33the merrier.
13:33That's amazing.
13:34I bought a good one,
13:35didn't I,
13:35boys?
13:35You've actually done
13:36pretty well,
13:36Mike,
13:37to be honest,
13:37for a car
13:38because compared
13:38to some of the
13:39other ones we've got
13:39here,
13:40we sweep them up
15:09¡Oh, dear!
15:10¡Oh, dear!
15:12It's so rusted and corroded.
15:14Can you see in there?
15:15Oh, wow.
15:16And that point, right at the lowest point, is the pickup, where all the fuel goes.
15:21And, of course, you can clearly see it's just going to drag all that stuff, get stuck in
15:24the pump, which is absolutely caked in the stuff.
15:26Yeah.
15:27I mean, either we're going to have to find a way to try and clean that out through
15:31a very small access hole or replace the tank, but we haven't really got a budget for that.
15:34Well, I mean, we could remove the tank, we could clean it out and then put a tank sealing solution
15:39on it.
15:39But, I mean, yeah, let's look into that, mate, because we need to save as much money
15:43as we can.
15:43For a fraction of the price of a new tank, a chemical sealing kit is the type of fix we
15:49need to save the pennies.
15:51Right.
15:52You've done the one underneath, yeah?
15:53OK.
15:54I'll let you take that.
15:57We've drained the fuel out of it, so you should be all right.
16:00OK.
16:00Perfect.
16:02Before we can repair the inside of our tank, we first need to remove any remaining pieces
16:06of rust, and I've got a brilliantly old-school method for doing just that.
16:12I'm going to use some nuts and bolts and some gravel.
16:15I'm going to put that into the hole, put some water in, seed it up, and go outside and
16:19give it a real aggressive shake.
16:24The nuts, bolts, and gravel, combined with the water, help to dislodge the worst of
16:29the corrosion from the surface of the tank interior.
16:34It's got to be enough, isn't it?
16:37Oh, look at the colour of that!
16:42And whilst the tank dries, we're going to take the engine out so we can give it a proper
16:46clean.
16:49Go on, William, you get.
16:50In we go.
16:51I bet you must have taken hundreds of these things out.
16:53One or two.
16:55I wish all engines were as easy as this to come out.
17:02Nassas off.
17:04Hopefully, fixing our imps' front seat will be just as simple.
17:08So I found a lady.
17:09She's the interior trimmer in this area.
17:12So I've got the seats in the back.
17:14I'm going to whip over there.
17:15Hopefully, she can just sew up the tear for us.
17:17Quick job, in and out, and it won't cost too much money.
17:22Lionheart Custom Interiors is one of Scotland's premier upholsterers.
17:26Let's just hope it's one of the cheapest as well.
17:29Hello, are you Sharon?
17:31Yes, hello.
17:32Sharon, how are you?
17:33I'm Mike.
17:33Hiya.
17:34Nice to meet you.
17:35Nice to meet you as well.
17:36Right.
17:37This is one of my seats.
17:40This one's got a rip in it, so we've got to do something with it.
17:43I'm hoping if we can replace just a small section of the material, we'll be able to keep cost down.
17:49You can get the material, but you can't get it with an embossed pattern.
17:54Right.
17:55This is unobtaining.
17:56We can't get it.
17:57That's correct.
17:58That's such a shame, isn't it?
17:59So how do we get this texture then?
18:00How do we get those lines?
18:02I can stitch that in.
18:03You can?
18:04Yep.
18:04OK, that'd be good.
18:07So much for an easy fix.
18:09Stitching in the lines will be painstaking work,
18:11and it turns out that that's not the only problem.
18:14This seat, I've noticed, it's got a piece of plywood.
18:19So it's needing some strapping on it.
18:23Why do I have a feeling this job's going to get me into trouble with Elvis?
18:27Look at this old seat, isn't it?
18:28Look at it.
18:29It is.
18:34Sharon, it's not meant to be like this.
18:37It's really not meant to be like this.
18:39Don't say I don't graph for our projects, Elvis.
18:44Do you know what?
18:45It's amazing how clean the inside of this tank actually is now.
18:48As well as a good wash, I've rinsed the tank with a solution of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid to remove any remaining contaminants.
19:00It's all now completely dry as well, which means I can move on to the next stage, which is this.
19:05I've sealed up all the holes once more.
19:08I'm going to pour this in and then rotate the tank in as many directions as I can, giving us that nice good seal that we're after.
19:19This sealant is a compound of moisture-curing polyurethane that will leave a solid, plastic-like coating on the inside of the tank once it's been hung up, drained and dried out.
19:32At the tremors, my hope of a nice quick seat fix has now turned into a four-scale strip-down.
19:47Shot.
19:49Somebody had a deep-fried bars bar.
19:51With our seat base beyond repair, Sharon first needs to fit new webbing, followed by new foam for the seat cushion.
20:04This stuff here?
20:05Yep.
20:05Yeah, that's better.
20:06I mean, you can already feel that's going to be much better.
20:10With both seats needing this level of work, I'm dreading the next conversation.
20:14So, if I was to leave you with the two front seats, new cushions, new webbing, all the rest of it tidied up, how much would it come to?
20:26In fact, don't tell me out loud, whisper it.
20:33OK.
20:34Right, OK, well, I might need to take Elvis for a little...
20:39Dram.
20:40A little dram, yes, that's a good idea.
20:44I have a feeling that the price of the seat repairs isn't going to go down well with Elvis.
20:50So, I've decided to warm him up with a nice little idea I've had.
20:55It had such a bad rap, this car, didn't it?
20:58Because it just wasn't built very well.
20:59So, what if we're doing what we're doing, like rebuilding the car?
21:04What if we got a journalist to come and re-review the car?
21:08To come and drive it and correct that review?
21:12So, yeah, that's not a nice idea.
21:13This is quite an idea.
21:14So, you can review it now, having added the upgrades.
21:17That's a good idea, mate.
21:18We've come up with a plan.
21:19Good idea.
21:22Some of the bottles in here look like they cost a fortune.
21:25Importantly, at the moment, I haven't spent any money.
21:28So, I think, even though we've overspent on the car, it's looking like we're going to probably
21:34get away with it.
21:36Right.
21:36Now for the bad news.
21:38I have spent some money.
21:39I did, I've spent some money.
21:41You know the driver's seat was ripped?
21:42Yeah.
21:43So, I took the driver's seat off to a lovely lady called Sharon.
21:46There's only a tiny little rip.
21:47You can see where this is going.
21:48So, Sharon has got the same material, but she has to sew in that pattern, and it's quite
21:53complicated to sew in.
21:55And you can't do one seat without doing the other seat.
21:58We are going to put new web in, new padding.
22:00So, essentially, we're getting two new seats.
22:02Just hit me with it.
22:03How much was it?
22:04Have another drink.
22:05No.
22:06Come on.
22:06That's enough.
22:06Just have one more drink.
22:07All you've got to do is have one more drink.
22:08I'll literally be drunk.
22:09Just tell me.
22:11£780.
22:11What?
22:12I'm repairing two front seats.
22:14Are you kidding me?
22:21I still can't believe you spent, what was it, £780 on those seats?
22:25Yeah, it was expensive.
22:27How are we going to turn any sort of profit?
22:29If we make a tenner out of this, I'll be amazed.
22:30Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
22:31Just stop here.
22:32Stop here.
22:32Right, just on the corner here.
22:33I just want to run in this little shop.
22:36Two sets.
22:37All right, two sets.
22:42Whoa, whoa.
22:43Well, in Scotland, you've got to have the Scottish drink.
22:46I'm not so keen, to be honest, this time of the morning.
22:49But, you know, if you insist.
22:50This is made with girders.
22:52Don't open it in here.
22:54I'll wait till we get to the world shop.
22:54It's a traditional drink.
22:55They love this stuff.
22:56No, no.
22:57No, mate.
22:59Oh, my God.
23:00What are you doing?
23:02Mate, it's gone everywhere.
23:03Look at the state of you.
23:06That really has gone everywhere.
23:07And the car.
23:08That really has gone everywhere.
23:12I'll clean the car, I promise.
23:14Yeah, well, you can do that later.
23:16Because right now, I need you to go and pick up some spare parts.
23:18I love Mike's idea of a journalist reviewing our imp.
23:27But the car will need to be nothing short of perfect.
23:31Can you see where it's leaking from under there?
23:33Yeah, it's really about the gators, but it's kind of...
23:36They're all perished.
23:37They're all torn, perished.
23:39But we've discovered a new problem.
23:41When I came in this morning, the boys had already had a look underneath
23:44and found a couple of leaks from the steering rack.
23:49I've been hoping to tackle the imp's overheating problem this morning.
23:52Instead, Willie and I must now get the steering rack off
23:55to see if it can be salvaged.
23:57These bowl joints are dead.
23:59Very warm and tight as well.
24:01Yeah, yeah, OK.
24:02All right, well, again, they're not expensive, so we can replace those.
24:06Well, that's one of the nice things about these cars, isn't it?
24:09They were very serviceable.
24:11Yes, it's pretty easy to work on.
24:17It's had a leak, and look, you can clearly see where that was coming from.
24:22It's got splits all over this rubber gator.
24:26At around £170, a new steering rack is something we can ill afford,
24:31so I'm hoping we can get away with a cheap fix.
24:33I think I'm just going to text Mike with a little list of consumable bits
24:37that I can replace on this.
24:39And that's not all we need to add to Mike's shopping list.
24:44How are you getting on, mate?
24:45Yeah, I'm just taking these rotor flex bushes off.
24:47Yeah, they have definitely seen better days, haven't they?
24:51These rubber couplings, known as doughnuts,
24:53connect the gearbox to the drive shaft to reduce vibration.
24:57I'll add it to the list of things that Mike can get for us.
25:00Armed with my shopping list, the guys in the workshop have sent me to a rather special farm,
25:0940 minutes from Stirling.
25:11I mean, I've been to plenty of car spares and parts stores in my life,
25:17but I don't think I've ever seen one quite like this.
25:21This rural Aladdin's cave belongs to a man named Chick.
25:25As well as selling new spares, he also salvages second-hand parts wherever he can.
25:30He is one of the people that keep our classic cars on the road.
25:35All this stuff is going to get used again.
25:38Absolutely incredible.
25:40Sir!
25:41Hello, Mike.
25:42You must be Chick.
25:43I am indeed.
25:44Chick, it's an honour to meet you.
25:47It really is.
25:48You're like an environmentalist, aren't you?
25:50Because you're taking old cars and you're recycling them, aren't you?
25:53Yep.
25:53Fantastic.
25:53It's cheaper to repair an old car than it is to make a new car.
25:56Exactly.
25:57That's exactly what I keep saying.
25:59So we are the ultimate eco-warriors.
26:02Chick!
26:02Oh!
26:04Hello.
26:06Oh, blimey.
26:07Hello, young lady.
26:08What's your name?
26:09Kate.
26:09Hello, Kate.
26:10You all right?
26:11Nice to meet you.
26:12That was a good surprise, wasn't it?
26:14Is that how you respond to him wherever he is?
26:17I can never find him.
26:18All right, so you just...
26:19I need to get out of here!
26:20Yeah, my neighbours can hear it.
26:21I'm sure they can.
26:25Right, so, listen.
26:26I've got this list of parts for a little hillman in 1971.
26:30If I just start at the top, we work our way through them.
26:32We've got radiator hosing, rear window hatch struts.
26:36Okay.
26:36Can we start there?
26:37Yeah.
26:38Just follow me.
26:40Oh, yes, baby.
26:42This place is just incredible.
26:44Stuff like this.
26:45Look, steering...
26:46Racks and racks of steering wheel.
26:48Rubbers.
26:49Oh, this is going to be great.
26:52Donuts.
26:53Donuts in, that's right, yeah.
26:54That's exactly what I'm looking for.
26:56Two of your finest.
26:57Yeah, lovely.
26:58Okay, donuts.
26:59How would you know where everything is in this building?
27:02I'm pretty good at remembering where everything's put as long as nobody else moves it.
27:05Right, so, uh, brake shoes.
27:09Where am I going to find those?
27:10Eh, that's a set of brake shoes there.
27:13Okay.
27:14Hoses?
27:15A set of hoses next to it.
27:16What, all of those?
27:17Take all of them?
27:18That's a car set.
27:19The other sundry items, I mean, they're obviously, I've still got to get an oil filter, an air filter, gaskets.
27:26Gaskets I could do there, yep.
27:28Oil filters are downstairs.
27:29Well, that's a few things ticked off, but with a long list from Elvis, I may be here for some time.
27:38At the workshop, I'm finally ready to tackle a job that, for the imp, is literally make or break.
27:46One of the Hillman imp's inherent problems was the fact that it overheated a lot.
27:51I mean, every single review that I've read about this car, in every one of the test drives that any journalist was doing, the car did overheat.
27:57John told me this.
28:01Almost every car that's still in existence today has had an engine swap because the first one overheated and probably blew up at some point.
28:08Partly, it was because the cooling system just wasn't up to scratch.
28:13Upgrading the system will cost money that we don't really have, but it's the only way to ensure the car can keep its cool.
28:19I've got a radiator here, which, if I hold it up and compare it to the old one,
28:24the same sort of shape and size as in it fits in the same mounting points on the car,
28:29but, importantly, the core is thicker.
28:33This old original one, about 38 millimetres thick, the new one, 45 millimetres thick.
28:38It means that we've got more cores to flow water through.
28:40We've also got more surface area in which we can pass over the cooling fan-driven air,
28:46giving us a greater cooling efficiency or cooling effect.
28:49For added protection, I've also fitted a secondary electric fan, which will kick in if temperature starts to rise.
28:57The new kit has cost a hefty £300, but it fits neatly into the existing cowlinks.
29:06When I, quite frankly, still find it amazing that any car in Scotland overheats.
29:10But what we do now know is this one won't.
29:16Overheating may have been the imp's main Achilles heel, but it wasn't the only one.
29:25When the car rolled out the Linwood factory back in the 60s,
29:28it had a dynamo to charge the battery on the move.
29:31It wasn't particularly efficient, but on top of that, it wasn't even that reliable.
29:34But the biggest issue was the concept of the dynamo itself, and it's something I can easily demonstrate.
29:43I'm not just out here getting my daily exercise regime in.
29:46I've got a dynamo hooked up to the rear wheel, remember those?
29:49And it's charging all this headlight on the front of the bike.
29:52And with me pedalling relatively quickly, you can see the light's operating perfectly well.
29:56It's shining brightly.
29:58Now, what happens if I slow things down and take a break?
30:02You can see the light gets a lot dimmer.
30:05It's no longer producing the same level of current because the back wheel on the bike is going slower.
30:10And that's because the way the dynamo works is, using direct current,
30:14it's only producing a limited amount of voltage when the rear wheel is going slowly.
30:19And the same happens on the car.
30:21The dynamo is linked to engine speed, so as the engine speed drops,
30:25the amount of voltage produced by the dynamo also drops.
30:32In modern cars, dynamos have been replaced by alternators,
30:37which are more efficient and produce a much stronger output at lower engine revs.
30:43This is a classic car.
30:44We want it to stay looking like a classic car.
30:47And so someone has come up with this.
30:49A wonderful little idea.
30:50It's called a dynamator.
30:51And as the name suggests, it's got the components of a modern-day alternator on the inside
30:56in the casing of a 1960s dynamo.
31:00It's a lovely little solution.
31:02And with the looming prospect of our car being reviewed by a modern-day reporter in a classic car magazine,
31:08well, this might edge us a little bit closer to getting a positive result.
31:11So all I've got to do now is bolt this onto our engine.
31:18With some of the imp's biggest issues addressed, the car is starting to come together.
31:24Down a little bit more then, please.
31:27But with plenty more to do, we won't be going home any time soon.
31:31Don't worry, Elvis.
31:32I've got a perfect little energy boost for you all.
31:36So what I'm after, I hear up here in Scotland, a delicacy is deep-fried Mars bar.
31:43Is that a real thing?
31:44Yes.
31:45Of course.
31:45Okay, so that is a real thing.
31:47Can you deep-fry anything else?
31:49Argis, spicy argis, jumbo argis.
31:52What?
31:53What else can you deep-fry?
31:54Can you do a sausage?
31:55Pizza.
31:56Pizza and butter.
31:57Stop it.
31:57Stop it.
31:58Yes.
31:58That must be sacrilege.
32:00You're an Italian.
32:01I know.
32:01Take a pizza, you wrap it and batter and deep-fry it.
32:03Of course.
32:04I'm having one of those.
32:06So, Jeff, make me some nice, healthy food.
32:08Oh, and a little side salad for me.
32:11Right, that supper's sorted.
32:13Let's just hope the boys are hungry.
32:16You all right, fellas?
32:17I've got everyone some food.
32:19I've got you some food as well.
32:20Hello, fellas.
32:21How are you?
32:21How are you?
32:22You deep-fry pizza up here.
32:24Yeah, of course.
32:27Right, here we go, boys.
32:28Here we go.
32:29How are you prepared?
32:30This is strictly dessert.
32:32Oh, look at that.
32:34That's a deep-fried Mars bar.
32:36I'm going straight in.
32:37Go straight in.
32:38That's good.
32:39That's very good, isn't it?
32:40It is surprisingly good.
32:42There's no way that should work.
32:44No.
32:44But it's amazing.
32:46It is like feeding time at the zoo.
32:47With the crew fuelled up, we better crack on.
32:54We're tantalisingly close to finishing our imp, but we still have several key jobs to complete.
32:59With a strainer fitted to filter out any debris, the renovated fuel tank is ready to go back in.
33:09There we go.
33:10Right, that's now back in place.
33:11I've just got to get it all plumbed in, of course.
33:14But then we should have a fully working and operational fuel system that won't cause us any problems anymore.
33:20After a successful parcel at Chick's Farm, I've got us a new set of brackets for the rear screen, which was another cause of the imp's poor reviews.
33:30One of the journalists said that he was driving along and the rear window popped open as he was driving along.
33:36So hopefully these new brackets do the job.
33:38Let's just see if it closes now, Mike.
33:44Oh!
33:46Oh!
33:47Lovely.
33:48That is absolutely perfect, isn't it?
33:50Almost back to the recommended way of closing it.
33:53That is...
33:53That won't be popping open.
33:56Mike's also managed to get new gaiters for our steering rack.
33:59So for around a tenner in parts, it's now as good as new.
34:03It's only really the seats that have cost any serious money, and they're worth every penny.
34:08I'll tell you what, isn't this job absolutely astonishing?
34:13Sharon has stitched this pattern in to the seats, and it just matches the rear seats perfectly.
34:21Look at these, like them.
34:23Aw, yeah, that is pucker, that is.
34:25Yeah.
34:26No, mate, we're on the right track.
34:28Nice one.
34:30But we'll also need to do something about the car's weedy-looking wheels.
34:34So I've had a spare set of mine shipped up from home.
34:38John!
34:38Ta-da!
34:42I dug these out of my container, and I thought it would save money on the build.
34:47Love it.
34:48Love my money, like.
34:49Only problem is, Mike, it's two inches too short.
34:52So I've got the wrong size wheel.
34:54So what size wheel do I actually need, then?
34:5612.
34:5612 or 13-inch.
34:58Pretty much like these ones here, Mike.
34:59All right, so I need to find a set like this.
35:04Is there any possibility that I can swap my four wheels for your four wheels?
35:10I'll tell you what, that looks absolutely perfect now.
35:27It's all complete.
35:27What do you look like?
35:29Well, I'm in Scotland.
35:31We're at Stirling Castle.
35:33This shows respect.
35:34Didn't know it was dressing up day, but, mate, you've pulled it off.
35:36Mate, he's dressing up and dressing down, because, like all true Scotsmen...
35:41Oh, my God, you haven't.
35:43Oh, yeah.
35:43No, get them off, though.
35:45Anyway, what do you think?
35:47Well, the car looks amazing.
35:48On a grey day like today, here in Scotland, this car just sings.
35:55When I bought our little Hillman Input auction,
35:57it was a far cry from the Scottish pin-up that stole the country's heart.
36:03But with help from every corner of this proud nation,
36:06it's been transformed into a car any Scot would be proud of.
36:09Sharon's seats have transformed the interior,
36:13and the new wheels complete the look.
36:18But most importantly, we've addressed some of the mechanical issues
36:21that blighted this otherwise brilliant car.
36:27That sounds like our cue to get it out on the road.
36:30It's a good little bit of road, isn't it?
36:41Oh, yeah, this is a wicked little car.
36:44This is...
36:45Oh, the way it handles, that is fantastic.
36:49It's highly good, isn't it?
36:50Even though the engine's all down the back, they handle really well.
36:54It's fan-blooming-tastic, this car.
36:56It really is.
36:57I think the point is, every single thing that we've both done to this car
37:01has just made it a little bit better.
37:03That fuel tank's been cleaned out.
37:04If you remember when I drove it, it was a bit stuttery,
37:08and there was so much rubbish being dredged up from the fuel tank.
37:11And it doesn't feel like this car's going to overheat at all.
37:13I know it's a little bit colder up here in Scotland,
37:15but you can feel that the car actually has got a lot more pep.
37:19Steering's lovely.
37:20Yeah.
37:21As well, you can see the way it's turning in.
37:22Do you know what?
37:23With the work we've done in tidying everything else up, it looks amazing.
37:27Now I've seen the seats, Sharon's craftsmanship is second to none.
37:31It's quite incredible.
37:33Yeah.
37:33And you have to pay for that, don't you?
37:37Oh, yes, the thorny issue of money,
37:39which has been a challenge on this one thanks to your auction antics.
37:43Will I ever be allowed to forget it?
37:46It's a rough ballpark idea of how much we think we're up to in terms of spend.
37:50Yeah, I reckon we're approaching eight and a half grand, just under.
37:55Just under?
37:55Yeah, around there.
37:56OK.
37:57All right, good.
38:00Right now, though, making money's the least of our worries.
38:03Because we've got a respected motoring journalist coming up to drive our car,
38:07and we're hoping the Imp finally gets the great review it deserves.
38:11So I reckon we've addressed every problem.
38:16Yeah.
38:17But it still doesn't make me feel any less nervous than the fact that David Simister,
38:23editor of Classic Car Weekly, is on his way,
38:26and he's coming to drive this car and give it a proper review,
38:30like it was back in the 70s.
38:31And it will be a proper review.
38:33He won't mess about.
38:33He's not going to fudge the numbers.
38:35He's going to give us an honest review of what this car feels like.
38:38You're making me feel more nervous now.
38:42Well, fortune favours the brave.
38:45Time, then, to bite the bullet.
38:50David!
38:51David, how are you?
38:52How are you doing?
38:53Good to see you.
38:54Good to see you.
38:55How are you doing?
38:56So, David, thank you for giving up time.
38:57I know you're a very busy man.
38:59First impressions?
39:00I think it's looking really straight.
39:01It's a really nice example.
39:03Thank you very much.
39:03I mean, the proof's in the driving,
39:04but I think visually it's really, really working.
39:07With this lots of little touches,
39:08all the sort of things that were inherent problems
39:11when this car rolled out of the factory,
39:13we hope we've fixed.
39:14Exactly that.
39:15So, we're going to set you off on a test drive.
39:18We want you to just review it.
39:20Yep.
39:20And just come back and tell us what you think.
39:22There you go, then, David.
39:24Your chariot awaits.
39:26Oh, it sounds sweet.
39:29Looks good for me, doesn't it?
39:32Well, then, here we go.
39:33We're in the lap of the gods now.
39:35Well, let's just hope that little imp behaves itself.
39:40Well, then, Hillman, let's see what you've got.
39:47We are stuck in a set of lights.
39:48This is a good chance to test the Hillman imp's famous cooling issues.
39:53I hope he's getting on all right.
39:54The pressure we put ourselves under here is immense
39:57because he's driving a car and he's going to review it
39:59as if it's like a new car.
40:01I know, and that is going to account for a lot, right?
40:04Steering is nicely weighted.
40:07There's no bumps or clunks from anything underneath.
40:12While David's out in the car,
40:14I need to let Mike into a little secret.
40:17Oh, you're kidding me.
40:19Dan, how are you, buddy?
40:20Yeah, lots of fun, mate.
40:21Great to see you.
40:22Good to see you, mate.
40:23Now, you kept that one from me.
40:25How did that happen?
40:25I did.
40:26Well, listen, I know he's a fan of classic cars,
40:28so give him a ring.
40:29Classic car nut Dan bought our Paddy Hopkirk tribute mini last year
40:33and I've lined him up for another potential sale.
40:37You want to add a Hillman imp to the collection?
40:38To the family, yeah.
40:39So why a Hillman imp?
40:41Rear engine.
40:42It was always a rival for the mini.
40:45Yeah, why not?
40:45Why not?
40:46I love that.
40:46Just try it.
40:47Why not?
40:47Yeah, why not?
40:48Oh, there's just one more thing I haven't told you.
40:53We've already kind of agreed a price, so the money...
40:56Hold on.
40:57Hold on.
40:58This is my job.
40:59Yeah, yeah.
40:59What's going on?
41:00You don't see me going in the workshop and pulling an engine out.
41:03So if we've got David Simister coming back and rolling in
41:07and saying, what a great car, lads,
41:08I mean, it's going to be a deal done, isn't it, Dan?
41:10Yeah, yeah.
41:11Really?
41:11Especially that kill.
41:12Yeah.
41:14Oh, hang on.
41:15I forgot to ask what price you agreed.
41:17Oh, how the tables have turned.
41:20I guess you'll just have to wait and see.
41:22He's back that way.
41:23Okay, so here we go.
41:25A moment of truth.
41:26Come on, go and see the car.
41:30So, David, what do you think?
41:31I think you've done Scotland proud.
41:32Oh, yes.
41:34Get in, eh?
41:35I knew it was a good little car.
41:36You know, it is a really well-sorted,
41:38sweet little example of an imp.
41:39I think you've clearly done a lot of work.
41:41It feels cherished.
41:42It feels sorted.
41:43Probably one of the best examples of an imp.
41:45Oh, David, you have just turned yourself
41:47into the smartest salesman.
41:49You just heard from the horse's mouth there
41:50how good the car is.
41:51That's pretty good, yeah.
41:52First impressions?
41:53I love it.
41:53I like the colour.
41:54I didn't think I would,
41:55but I do like the colour.
41:56Yeah, it's really good.
41:57It really does stand out here.
41:58We teed this up on the phone.
42:00Yeah.
42:00Mate, you can...
42:01I feel like a spare...
42:03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
42:03I feel like a spare part here.
42:05You two have done this deal
42:06without me knowing.
42:08I don't know if you've seen
42:08how this works before,
42:09but, Dan, are you happy to...
42:11No, wait.
42:11Hold on, Ryan.
42:12You've cut yourself a deal.
42:13That was my part.
42:15You just sold it.
42:16Dan, congratulations.
42:17Thank you.
42:18Thank you, David.
42:19Always a pleasure.
42:20Thank you, David.
42:20Thank you, man.
42:21Absolutely awesome.
42:22Mate, well done.
42:22Well done.
42:23It's a brilliant result
42:26and a great way
42:27to round off
42:27our global adventure.
42:31Woo-hoo!
42:33Cheers, buddy.
42:34Cheers, mate.
42:35Sounds amazing, Elvis.
42:37Me and you,
42:38we should fix anything.
42:40I am super dealer.
42:43That's basic?
42:44Yeah.
42:44That's not food, is it?
42:49Well, I've got to say,
42:50this world tour
42:51has been one of the best things
42:53that's ever happened
42:53in my lifetime.
42:54It's been incredible.
42:56Unbelievable.
42:56I mean, there have been
42:56some amazing places,
42:58including right here in Scotland.
42:59Met some great people
43:00and the cars we've done
43:01have been spectacular.
43:03But come on, Elvis,
43:04put me out of my misery.
43:05Did we make a profit on the Imp?
43:07So let me remind you again,
43:09the car owed us £8,492.
43:15Which is great news
43:17because it does show us the profit.
43:19That profit is in my pocket.
43:20Hold on.
