Vladimir Putin has finally weighed in on the Steve Witkoff leak scandal—and instead of outrage, he offered a taunt. Brushing off questions about who recorded the Kremlin backchannel, Putin sneered that “those who are eavesdropping should track their own affairs better,” adding that even spies should “do that with skill.” Then he pointedly praised Witkoff as “a person of culture” who understands “mutual respect.”

00:00Well, as to the leaks, as they say, it could be fake, or it could be an eavesdropped conversation, which is a criminal act in Russia, by the way.
00:15You cannot just eavesdrop.
00:18I think those who are eavesdropping must be tracking their own affairs better.
00:26But even if you're trying to spy on someone, you should do that with skill.
00:35I don't know exactly about the nature of those leaks, but you see that I have a busy day.
00:46I just had these events, and I came here to talk with you.
00:50But generally speaking, what is the problem?
00:56It's not about us.
01:01It's about different opinions clashing between the collective West as a whole and the United States and within them.
01:15On what should be done to stop the war, what should be done to make it stop.
01:22We had a meeting with Mr. Witkoff before Anchorage, then I went to Alaska, and we had talks.
01:35On the whole, I got the impression that we understood where we stand and what should be done to stop the war.
01:47Then we went back to our capitals, because we had to think and to consult with our ministries, with our allies.
02:04And after that, we agreed to continue to continue the conversation.
02:13Pavrov and Rubio met in New York, the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting, and they did have a conversation.
02:21And I cannot say that there was any conflict between Russia and the US, who stayed on the Anchorage platform.
02:33And then the United States announced sanctions against our two major oil companies.
02:38Where did that come out from?
02:43I really was confused.
02:47I didn't understand where that came from.
02:49So accusing Mr. Witkoff of being too kind on his Russian colleagues would be really unjustified.
03:01We did meet, and we did talk, and we met in Alaska, as I said.
03:10And then, when the relations seem to be rebuilding, we introduced those sanctions that are certainly destructive for our relations.
03:21As I said, it's really unclear for us what kind of sign is that.
03:28What does this gesture mean?
03:29And apparently, Mr. Witkoff is going to Moscow on the instructions of President Trump.
03:40It would be surprising if he talked with Ushakov and sweared, using swear words.
03:51And then he just came here and tried to rebuild the relations, to improve the negotiating positions.
03:59It would be just nonsense.
04:02And it goes without saying that Mr. Witkoff is a person of culture.
04:12He understands that mutual respect is necessary for a conversation.
04:23By the way, we're talking about a friendship,
04:26friendship with President Trump, which dates back quite a long way.
04:34And he has defended his country, his country's interests.
04:40Our dialogue is not simple.
04:45Every one of us is defending their position, but we're doing it respectfully.
04:50Mr. Witkoff is protecting the position of the U.S. and the interests of the U.S. as he sees them,
04:57and as they're seen by the people who have delegated the talks with Russia in his office.
05:08And I think it also includes people from the military and diplomatic circles
05:12and from Trump's circles more generally.
