In this unguided sleep story, we embark on a wonderful journey to Paris on a snowy night, following the lives of three people who work while everyone else is asleep.

As the quiet of night settles in and almost everyone drifts off to sleep in snowy, slumbering Paris, others awaken, busy with their professions. In this sleep story for adults, you will accompany three individuals in their work — yet you, too, can fully relax and simply listen to the stories of their professions. This sleep story is not told from the perspective of “you,” as many of my other stories here are; instead, you are a silent observer. This different style may help you unwind and sleep even better.

01:06Now, make yourself comfortable, and whenever you're ready, you can close your eyes.
01:13Notice your resting body, and how comfortably warm and pleasant it is for you right now.
01:27Breathe in and out naturally,
01:29feel your chest rise and fall. New, calming energy flows into your body.
01:46And with each exhale, you let go of everything that no longer serves you.
01:52Feel the comforting warmth, and how much your body loosens.
02:04Let go of everything that has burdened you today, and surrender to your breath.
02:11Enjoy the peace and relaxation.
02:20Sometimes it approaches faster. Sometimes it may take longer. Don't force yourself.
02:29This is your time. Feel the security and warmth around you.
02:40You may also feel gratitude. It may be that there was a moment today that was special to you.
02:52Even if it is only the gratitude of being here, in this place, and feeling the relaxation.
03:01Keep breathing in your rhythm. And let this positive energy flow.
03:17Imagine that everything around you disappears in a soft mist.
03:24As if you were on a soft cloud that carries you weightlessly and gently through the night.
03:40Completely sheltered and full of lightness.
03:48You can just be and enjoy the peace.
03:54Notice how your muscles loosen more and more.
04:07As your back stretches in a pleasant way.
04:14Allow yourself to sink into your relaxation.
04:19With each breath, you sink deeper and deeper and let go of everything.
04:39It's time for your sleep story.
04:42Tonight, we travel to one of the greatest cities on planet Earth.
04:55Paris.
04:59And we meet some people there.
05:01The first Parisian we meet this evening is Jean-Pierre.
05:25Jean-Pierre, the baker.
05:37He owns a little boulangerie, just around the corner, from the Rodin Museum, in the seventh
05:48Arrondissement, in Paris.
05:55Jean-Pierre's boulangerie has been in the family for a very, very long time.
06:05He is one of a long line of bakers, who have lived in this house, above this little boulangerie.
06:21And as Paris sleeps, Jean-Pierre awakes.
06:38Six nights a week, Jean-Pierre leaves his sleeping wife
06:46and gets up in the dead of the night to make pastries and bread for the residents of the City of Lights.
07:01He doesn't find it difficult.
07:14It's part of life.
07:17Part of his natural rhythm.
07:19As he walks into the bathroom, the lights in the house are still off.
07:33And he looks out through the window,
07:35at the sleeping city.
07:44The stars shine brightly, down upon Paris.
07:51It is wintertime.
07:58And the white snow that sits on the ground below,
08:05glistens in the starlight.
08:07Jean-Pierre loves this time of the day.
08:22It feels like all the world is his.
08:24He stands in the darkness, his bare feet touching the warm wooden floor.
08:42And he feels grounded.
08:44He takes some deep breaths.
08:51In and out.
08:55In and out.
09:00In and out.
09:05He feels warm inside.
09:08As he looks out.
09:13On the cold night.
09:16He feels cozy, if you like.
09:26He dresses.
09:29Brushes his teeth.
09:33And descends down.
09:35Into the little boulangerie.
09:47His first job.
09:50Is to fire up the ovens.
09:57He lights them.
09:58And every day.
10:02Without fail.
10:05Enjoys the light.
10:07Popping.
10:09Of the comforting sound.
10:13Of the wood burning.
10:22He looks around the kitchen.
10:24Pretty much unchanged.
10:29In over a hundred years.
10:35He thinks of his father and mother.
10:40Long gone now.
10:41And the joy.
10:44And the joy.
10:46And life.
10:48That they experienced together.
10:52In this hallowed place.
11:00He takes out his pastry.
11:02Some of it prepared the night before.
11:10And he starts to roll.
11:13Adding butter.
11:14As he does.
11:20This.
11:22Rolling motion.
11:25He has done a hundred million times before.
11:28His arms are strong because of it.
11:37And there's something he loves about it.
11:42The process.
11:45The craftsmanship.
11:47The care.
11:52And attention to detail.
11:56That only someone who really cares about what they do.
12:03Can display.
12:04As he rolls.
12:14He likes to think of it.
12:17As his morning meditation.
12:20It is in a way.
12:27His way of connecting to something higher.
12:34He loses himself in it.
12:39And it isn't long.
12:40Before Jean-Pierre.
12:45Has created lots and lots.
12:49Of little triangles.
12:52That will be rolled up.
12:55And made into croissant.
12:57As Jean-Pierre looks upon his work.
13:09Over in the Louvre Museum.
13:14Marie-Louise.
13:17A security guard.
13:18Is in the middle.
13:22Of her shift.
13:26She.
13:28Is sitting.
13:28Behind her desk.
13:31Looking.
13:33At a group.
13:34Of television screens.
13:38Showing her views.
13:40Throughout the museum.
13:41She decides.
13:47To walk.
13:48Through the empty halls.
13:53In fact.
13:56It's one of her favorite things to do.
14:01You see.
14:03Marie-Louise.
14:06Is an art student.
14:07And cleverly got a job.
14:13At the Louvre.
14:16So that she can enjoy.
14:19All of the great masterpieces.
14:23All on her own.
14:32She walks along.
14:33The great empty halls.
14:39Of this magnificent.
14:42Great.
14:44And empty building.
14:50She feels in a way.
14:53Not unlike Jean-Pierre.
14:57That the world is hers.
14:59At this time of night.
15:00And.
15:05Sometimes.
15:07She likes to pretend.
15:10That the paintings.
15:11Are hers too.
15:18This building.
15:21Was originally built.
15:23As a royal residence.
15:25And it took.
15:29Two hundred years.
15:31To build.
15:36As Marie-Louise.
15:39Walks through it.
15:42She looks up.
15:44At everything around her.
15:48Not just the paintings.
15:49But the building itself.
15:56The ornate detail.
16:00And craftsmanship.
16:03Is astonishing.
16:09Eventually.
16:10She arrives.
16:12She arrives.
16:13To her favorite room.
16:18And yes.
16:20You guessed it.
16:22It's the room.
16:24Where the Mona Lisa is.
16:27By Leonardo da Vinci.
16:29This painting.
16:39A masterpiece.
16:43Of the Italian Renaissance.
16:47Is the best known.
16:48Most visited.
16:53Most written about.
16:57Most sung about.
16:59Work of art.
17:02In all the world.
17:03It's believed.
17:15That da Vinci.
17:18Worked on the painting.
17:20For many years.
17:23In the early.
17:251500s.
17:29Eventually.
17:30He brought it.
17:33To France.
17:36And it came.
17:37Into the hands.
17:40Of Francois Premier.
17:45King Francis.
17:47The first.
17:49Of France.
17:50It has been.
17:56In the Louvre.
17:59For over.
18:00200 years.
18:04And of course.
18:06Normally.
18:08It is difficult.
18:11To look at it.
18:14There are so.
18:15Many people.
18:18Standing.
18:19In front of it.
18:20But not tonight.
18:28Not.
18:29For Marie Louise.
18:34Most nights.
18:35That Marie Louise works.
18:40She.
18:41Is granted.
18:42A private audience.
18:45With the world's.
18:47Most famous.
18:48Most famous.
18:48Painting.
18:58As a little girl.
19:03She had a poster.
19:04Of the painting.
19:05In her room.
19:06And in some ways.
19:13She can't believe.
19:16That she gets to see this painting.
19:20In the flesh.
19:22On her own.
19:24Every night.
19:25She stands close to the great painting.
19:33She stands close to the great painting.
19:40Looking at the delicate features of this mysterious woman.
19:48No one knows.
19:53No one knows.
19:55Exactly who the Mona Lisa is.
20:00Or was.
20:05She is one of humanity's great mysteries.
20:09A mystery.
20:15That will more than likely.
20:17Remain unanswered.
20:19She looks at the brushstrokes.
20:29And she imagines the hand.
20:33Of the great man.
20:35Da Vinci.
20:38Working tirelessly.
20:40And patiently.
20:42And patiently.
20:45On this exquisite work.
20:54She tries to imagine.
20:57Where he would have painted it.
20:59In his studio in Florence.
21:08Or outside.
21:10In the country.
21:15Maybe both.
21:24In some strange way.
21:26She feels connected.
21:29To Da Vinci.
21:34She thinks that we.
21:36As humans.
21:39Are all connected.
21:42And that.
21:44In itself.
21:47Is beautiful.
21:52It's a thought.
21:54That was generated.
21:56By looking at art.
22:01And that's.
22:03Why Marie Louise.
22:06Loves art.
22:16She feels tired now.
22:21Sleepy.
22:22In fact.
22:26And she decides.
22:27To keep walking.
22:31Through.
22:34The great.
22:35Museum.
22:43While Marie Louise.
22:45Walks around the Louvre.
22:49Outside.
22:50Driving.
22:58Is Laurel.
23:00A taxi driver.
23:02Taxi driver.
23:03Is Laurel.
23:03A taxi driver.
23:05Laurent likes to work these hours, when there's no traffic on the streets of Paris.
23:24He, like Marie-Louise and Jean-Pierre, enjoys the warm feeling, just for a few hours, that
23:43the world is his and his alone.
23:57He passes the Louvre and looks at the building and the great glass pyramid outside.
24:10The thought strikes him that he has never been inside, despite growing up in Paris.
24:27He drives along the great Seine River, and opens his window for a moment to feel the cool
24:43air of the night, and to hear the calming flow of the river outside.
24:55Eventually, he arrives at Le Tour Eiffel, or the Eiffel Tower.
25:15He has a ritual every night, that when he passes this world-famous icon, he parks the car,
25:35gets out, and looks up at what was a very controversial monument when it was first constructed.
25:54He loves this tower, and he looks at it, taking in its enormity and grandeur.
26:18And every night, the thought strikes him that he is lucky to live in this place.
26:33He allows himself to feel gratitude for the life he lives, for the place he lives in, for the
26:55people he loves, and who love him in return.
27:09He knows that so many people around the world would love to see the Eiffel Tower just once in their life.
27:24Laurent sees it every day, and that privilege is not lost on him.
27:39It's cold outside, and so Laurent gets back in the car, and continues his nighttime drive through Paris.
28:05He has a call to do a pickup at the Ritz.
28:19Someone is going to the airport, Charles de Gaulle.
28:33As Laurent begins his journey towards Charles de Gaulle, with a businessman in the back.
28:49Roxanne, an air stewardess, is aboard an Air France A380 aircraft, flying in from Los Angeles.
29:13Roxanne has worked a long shift, and she is very tired.
29:29It seems to her that nearly all 615 passengers on board are fast asleep.
29:52The people in first class are lying out horizontally.
30:08Roxanne is preparing for landing in the next few minutes.
30:24She has worked hard tonight, aboard this great metal bird of the skies.
30:40It is never lost on Roxanne.
30:44Just how privileged she is to fly around the world.
30:58Yesterday, she was in Los Angeles, the city of angels.
31:10Later tonight, she will be in Paris.
31:17Her home.
31:19The city of lights.
31:23As she announces to the sleeping passengers that soon they will land, she thinks how amazing
31:44it is, that all of these people, and all of their luggage, and this great machine, can fly high
32:03high above in the sky, and travel halfway around our beautiful home, Earth.
32:26The thought also strikes her that nothing exceptional like this happens without humans working together.
32:45Humanity working together is when we are at our best.
33:02As Roxanne prepares the sleeping passengers for landing, the pilots prepare the great plane to land.
33:26And as the plane touches down in Charles de Gaulle, and the passengers disembark the plane,
33:47Jean-Pierre takes out a beautiful tray of croissant, the smell wafting through the streets of Paris.
34:07The night is slowly blending into day.
34:30And soon, Jean-Pierre welcomes his first customer.
34:45Roxanne walks into the boulangerie and buys herself a croissant.
34:59She greets Jean-Pierre with a smile.
35:04And Jean-Pierre greets Roxanne with familiarity.
35:14These two know each other well.
35:20Soon, Roxanne is walking home, eating her croissant.
35:37And Marie-Louise pops into the boulangerie and buys a pain au chocolat.
35:53Jean-Pierre is always happy to see Marie-Louise.
36:04Then, Marie-Louise happily heads home to her little apartment at Republique.
36:17It isn't long before Laurent parks his car outside the boulangerie, comes in and buys himself a baguette.
36:44Before getting in his car and driving out of the city to his home in the Parisian suburbs.
37:01Now, Jean-Pierre's wife, Brigitte, comes downstairs and greets her husband with a warm embrace.
37:26Jean-Pierre kisses his wife on the cheek and goes upstairs.
37:39He changes and gets into bed for a well-earned sleep.
37:53He stretches out in his bed and feels so very tired.
38:05As Jean-Pierre is closing his eyes, so is Roxanne.
38:15She is in her dark little room, feeling cozy and ready for sleep.
38:32Laurent has said hello to his children and wife, and now he is under a warm duvet.
38:52Marie is head on the pillow in his very comfortable bed, about to have a very well-earned sleep.
39:13Meanwhile, Marie-Louise is already in a deep sleep.
39:29Dreaming of the Mona Lisa and Da Vinci's Florence.
39:45Soon, all of our friends who we have followed tonight are sleeping deeply.
40:05Now it's time for you to sink in to a peaceful and restful sleep.
40:19Your body works powerfully and reliably.
40:29You can detach your mind from my words.
40:39Drift off.

44:50Sleep well.
44:56You have earned it.
45:02And while you may drift into wonderful dreams, your subconscious takes in the following affirmations.

45:40I relax each of my muscles.
45:49With every second, they grow warmer and heavier.
