00:00As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee,
00:06he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter,
00:10and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea.
00:15They were fishermen.
00:16He said to them,
00:18Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.
00:24At once they left their nets and followed him.
00:27He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
00:32James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
00:37They were in a boat with their father Zebedee,
00:40mending their nets.
00:42He called them, and immediately they left their boat
00:46and their father and followed him.
00:51The Gospel of the Lord.
00:54Praise to you, O Lord Jesus Christ.
00:57Your Excellencies, dear Brother Priests,
01:27Dear religious sisters and brothers,
01:31pastoral workers,
01:33and all my brothers and sisters,
01:36it is a great joy for me to be with you.
01:41I am grateful to the Lord
01:42that in my first apostolic journey,
01:46he has granted me the grace
01:47to visit this holy land that is Turkey,
01:51a place where the story of the people of Israel meets the birth of Christianity,
01:58where the Old and New Testaments embrace,
02:02and where the pages of numerous councils were written.
02:06The faith that unites us has deep roots.
02:12Obedient to God's call,
02:14our father Abraham set out from Ur of the Chaldeans
02:18and then from the region of Harran in the south of present-day Turkey.
02:22He departed for the promised land.
02:26In the fullness of time after Jesus' death and resurrection,
02:33his disciples also came to Anatolia.
02:36In Antioch, whose bishop was St. Ignatius,
02:40they were called Christians for the first time.
02:43From that city, St. Paul began some of his apostolic journeys
02:49that led to the founding of many communities.
02:54It was likewise in Ephesus,
02:56on the shores of the Anatolian Peninsula,
02:59where, according to some ancient sources,
03:02John, the beloved disciple and evangelist,
03:05lived and died.
03:08Furthermore, we recall with admiration
03:12the great Byzantine history,
03:15the missionary impulse of the Church of Constantinople,
03:19and the spread of Christianity throughout the Levant.
03:23Even today in Turkey,
03:25there are many communities of Eastern Rite Christians,
03:30Armenians, Syrians, and Chaldeans,
03:33as well as those of the Latin Rite.
03:36The ecumenical Patriarchate remains a point of reference,
03:41both for its Greek faithful
03:43and for those of other Orthodox churches.
03:47Dear friends,
03:50your communities emerged from the richness of this long history,
03:54and it is you who are called today
03:57to nurture the seed of faith
04:00handed down to us
04:01by Abraham, the apostles, and the fathers.
04:06The history that precedes you
04:08is not something merely
04:10to be remembered
04:11and then venerated as a glorious past
04:14while we look with resignation
04:17at how small the Catholic Church
04:19has become numerically.
04:22On the contrary,
04:24we are invited to adopt
04:25an evangelical vision
04:27enlightened by the Holy Spirit.
04:29When we look with God's eyes,
04:34we discover that he has chosen
04:35the way of littleness
04:38descending into our midst.
04:41This is the way of the Lord
04:42to which we are all called
04:45to bear witness.
04:47The prophets announce God's promise
04:50by speaking of a small shoot
04:52that will spring forth.
04:53Jesus praises the little ones
04:57who trust in him.
04:59He teaches that God's kingdom
05:01does not impose itself
05:03with displays of power,
05:06but grows like the smallest
05:08of all seeds planted in the earth.
05:12This logic of littleness
05:15is the church's true strength.
05:18It does not lie in her resources
05:20or structures,
05:21nor do the fruits of her mission
05:23depend on numbers,
05:25economic power,
05:27or social influence.
05:30The church instead lives
05:31by the light of the Lamb.
05:34Gathered around him,
05:35she is sent out into the world
05:37by the power of the Holy Spirit.
05:40In this mission,
05:42she is constantly called
05:44to trust in the Lord's promise.
05:48Do not be afraid, little flock,
05:50for it is your Father's good pleasure
05:53to give you the kingdom.
05:57Let's remember also
05:58the words of Pope Francis,
06:00who said,
06:01a Christian community
06:02in which the faithful priests
06:05and bishops
06:05do not follow the path
06:07of littleness
06:08has no future.
06:11The kingdom of God
06:12sprouts in small things,
06:15always in what is small.
06:17The church in Turkiye
06:20is a small community,
06:22yet fruitful
06:23like a seed
06:24and leaven
06:26of the kingdom.
06:27I therefore encourage you
06:29to cultivate
06:29a spiritual attitude
06:31of confident hope,
06:34rooted in faith
06:35and in union with God.
06:38There is a need
06:39to witness to the gospel
06:40with joy
06:41and look to the future
06:43with hope.
06:44Some hopeful signs
06:47are already
06:49clearly present.
06:51Let us ask the Lord,
06:52therefore,
06:52for the grace
06:53to recognize
06:54and to nurture them.
06:57There are other signs,
06:58perhaps,
06:59that we may need
07:00to express creatively
07:01through perseverance
07:03in faith
07:04and in witness.
07:06Among the most beautiful
07:08and promising signs,
07:10I think of the many
07:11young people
07:11who come knocking
07:13at the doors
07:13of the Catholic Church
07:14with their questions
07:16and concerns.
07:18In this regard,
07:20I urge you
07:20to continue
07:21the good pastoral work
07:23that you are doing.
07:25I also encourage you
07:26to listen,
07:28to accompany
07:29young people,
07:30to give special attention
07:32to those areas
07:33where the church
07:34in Turkiye
07:35is called to serve.
07:38Ecumenical
07:38and interreligious dialogue,
07:40transmitting the faith
07:42to the local population
07:44and pastoral service
07:46to refugees
07:47and migrants.
07:49This last aspect
07:51deserves special reflection.
07:54The significant presence
07:55of migrants
07:56and refugees
07:57in this country
07:58presents the church
08:00with the challenge
08:01of welcoming
08:02and serving
08:03some of the most vulnerable.
08:05At the same time,
08:08this church itself
08:09is made up
08:10largely of foreigners
08:11and many of you,
08:13priests,
08:14sisters,
08:14and pastoral workers
08:15come from other lands.
08:18This calls
08:19for a special commitment
08:20to enculturation
08:21so that the language,
08:24customs,
08:24and culture
08:25of Turkiye
08:26become more
08:28and more
08:28your own.
08:30Moreover,
08:31the communication
08:32of the gospel
08:33always passes
08:34through such
08:35enculturation.
08:38I would also like
08:39to recall
08:40that it was
08:41in this land
08:41of years
08:42that the first
08:43eight ecumenical
08:44councils were held.
08:46This year
08:47marks the 1700th
08:49anniversary
08:49of the first
08:50council of Nicaea,
08:53a milestone
08:53in the history
08:54of the church
08:55but also
08:56of humanity
08:57as a whole.
08:59This ever-relevant
09:01event
09:01puts before us
09:03several challenges
09:04that I'd like
09:05to mention.
09:07The first
09:08is the important
09:09challenge
09:09of the church
09:10that the church
09:10puts before us
09:11several challenges
09:12that I'd like
09:12to mention.
