The Untold Truth Of House Hunters
Transcript
00:00HGTV's House Hunters is popular because it shows that average Joes and Janes can own
00:06the homes of their dreams.
00:07At least, that's what audiences think.
00:09The truth is that this reality show offers little more than false promises.
00:14Here's the untold truth of House Hunters.
00:17It's fake
00:18The blog, Hooked on Houses, began exposing the series in 2010, when blogger Julia Sweetin
00:23detailed the steps producers allegedly took to manipulate episodes.
00:27Whistleblowers outline the actual process behind the show.
00:30Generally, participants have already decided on a house before filming even begins, then
00:35tour a couple other homes to complain about for the cameras.
00:38Well, it's definitely not our style.
00:40It's not new, it's not modern.
00:41I mean, I could learn to live with stairs.
00:44Sometimes, the new house has even already been purchased.
00:48Participants are reportedly paid $500 for a few days of filming.
00:51Or, as most people would call it, a few days of acting.
00:55Perhaps you would care to say that through his face!
00:58Oh!
00:59You fooled me!
01:00Acting!
01:01Genius!
01:02Thank you!
01:04More money overseas
01:06While $500 for just appearing on a show isn't bad, it's not as good as what the people
01:11who appear on House Hunters International carry home.
01:14In addition to the opportunity to visit another country, participants pocket $1,500, according
01:19to the production company's website.
01:21It's three times the cash for essentially the same amount of work.
01:25It's no secret.
01:26In 2012, the show's publicist issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly, admitting that producers
01:32seek out families who are far along in the house-buying process in order to speed up production.
01:36Even though aspects of the show are staged, the series tries to capture the authentic emotions
01:41that accompany buying a house.
01:43Okay, fine.
01:44But don't act surprised by your viewers' authentic emotions after finding out they've been duped.
01:49It's all in the hair.
01:51Despite being outrageously fake, there's still some fun to be had while watching the show.
01:55According to participant Bobby Jensen, the ending of an episode can be predicted by the
02:00participants' hairdos.
02:02Jensen told Hooked on Houses that scenes at participants' old homes and new homes are
02:05filmed close together, while scenes at the other potential homes are filmed later.
02:10If you watch carefully, you'll sometimes see inconsistencies in participants' hair lengths
02:14or styles.
02:16Watch the hairstyles, and you can predict the ending.
02:19Another tell?
02:20The winning house will usually be completely empty, while the others may still be furnished,
02:24since the new house has already been purchased and the previous owners have moved out.
02:28Pretty sneaky, sis.
02:31And in Jensen's case, the other two houses she toured already belonged to willing friends
02:36and were never really on the market.
02:38The truth matters.
02:40Audiences often expect reality television to be manipulated, and with that in mind, one may
02:44think nobody's getting hurt by House Hunters.
02:47The people at Slate disagree, saying in 2012, quote,
02:51House Hunters is presenting dangerous misinformation about the home-buying process and deleting all
02:56of the accompanying complications and consequences.
02:59Viewers use the prices, locations, and home criteria discussed on the show as barometers for
03:04their own house hunts because the information is presented as fact.
03:07HGTV have some obligation to portray the housing market as it is, or, at the very least, offer
03:13a pronounced disclaimer about the producers' creative and logistical liberties?
03:17HGTV's director of programming, Brian Balthazar, doesn't think that any of it really matters,
03:22telling ABC News,
03:24they should keep watching because you're seeing real people find the real home of their dreams.
03:30And that's all spelled out right on the show.
