J. Smith-Cameron tells THR on the Emmys red carpet that 'Succession' set the stage for a Gerri-Tom spinoff in a scene with Matthew Macfadyen that didn't make the finale's final cut.
Transcript
00:00What has it been like reuniting with the cast these past two weekends for the Globes, Critics' Choice, and now the Emmys?
00:05It's fantastic. You know, a lot of our cast live, you know, across the globe from each other.
00:10So it's incredible to see them all again, and very emotional, actually.
00:14Now that some time has passed from filming the show, is there anything that you miss about playing Jerry that you didn't expect to miss?
00:22Well, it's wonderful to play a character who's so unflappable and tough.
00:27I mean, I wouldn't say she's completely unflappable. That's what makes her relatable, right?
00:32But she's so in her own corner, and I hope that will rub off on me, you know, and on everyone who watches,
00:42or all the young women who watch, because it's kind of how to survive in that cutthroat world.
00:48Do you think there's any world that we could see more of Succession and more of this universe?
00:52Well, if it was up to me, certainly. I think Jesse Armstrong and the other writers probably need a well-deserved break.
01:00They really hit it out of the park, in my opinion.
01:04But maybe after a good rest, who knows? Maybe they'll start missing us, and that would be good.
01:09If you were going to pitch a spinoff around Jerry to Jesse Armstrong, what would your pitch be?
01:14Well, I mean, I think he set it up perfectly for me, because he names, he doesn't name, but in the story,
01:21Tom Wamsgams, acted by the delicious Matthew McFadden, is named CEO.
01:27And then he's like, we need Jerry. She's not afraid of the dark, which is, I love that line.
01:32So I think I'm kind of set up. We did one take, which isn't in the finale, where Tom took my arm and kind of walked me down the hallway,
01:42and it was like the end of Casablanca, where they say, it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
01:47It was kind of like that. They couldn't use it.
01:50All of our episodes had so much embarrassment of riches of stuff, and they always had to cut back.
01:55The top two nominees tonight are Succession and The Last of Us.
02:00So if you yourself had to fight through either the Waystar, Royco boardroom, or the apocalypse,
02:06which do you think would be harder?
02:09I think the apocalypse wins. But also, remember, I play Jerry Kelman, the fixer, so.
02:14So you, if anybody, can fight through the boardroom.
02:17I land on my feet.
