00:30Millions of landmines and unexploded weapons scattered over nearly a quarter of the land.
00:35This invisible danger is wrecking lives.
00:39More than 900 civilians have been killed or injured.
00:52In Tokyo, the Japanese government has just hosted the annual Ukraine Mine Action Conference.
01:00Globally, Japan is one of the major supporters of Ukraine,
01:03having provided $12 billion in financial aid, equipment and training since 2022.
01:09This conference is an opportunity to coordinate international support, technical, financial and humanitarian,
01:18to accelerate demining in Ukraine.
01:21The emphasis is not only on making the country safer right now, but as an economic gateway to the future.
01:27The Japanese foreign minister said landmines cast a dark shadow over Ukraine's future
01:36and stressed the importance of Mine Action through international public-private partnerships.
01:42Mr. Motegi outlined a new package, the Ukraine Mine Action Support Initiative,
02:11which aims to boost human resources and technology, integrating Mine Action into Ukraine's broader recovery.
02:19He also announced a new partnership with Colombia, another country with a history of landmine contamination,
02:26and a financial contribution to the NATO fund that supports mine action in Ukraine.
02:31Ukraine's deputy minister of economy, environment and agriculture says the ongoing conflict makes clearing landmines even more dangerous.
02:42It's really complicated, complicated our work.
02:46But we're doing it because if we will wait when war will stop, we will lose totally our economy
02:54because our economy is in a big part, it's agriculture, production.
03:01Japan and Ukraine have developed a new approach, the so-called nexus,
03:06which is all about getting rid of the landmines, but also what comes next.
03:10Nexus idea, it's not doing just clearance, it's clearance, it's thinking about future
03:16and what will happen in the area in the future after clearance,
03:20what will rebuild and in what time period, how we work with local authorities,
03:26how we work with local citizens, with local business.
03:30Japanese engineering and manufacturing company Niken Corporation
03:34has given 12 landmine clearance machines to Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict.
03:40Thousands of miles away from the Tokyo conference,
04:03the Niken machine is being put through its paces in a real-life simulation.
04:10Here in Cambodia, officers from Ukraine's emergency services
04:14are learning how to use the equipment on the ground
04:17before heading home where they'll train up their colleagues in turn.
04:22Coordinated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA,
04:26this training camp pulls together expertise from the Cambodia Mine Action Centre and Niken
04:33to pass on knowledge and skills to trainees from the Ukrainian State Emergency Service.
04:40This is one of several training sessions JICA has held in Cambodia,
04:45a country that knows all too well the deadly toll that landmines exact.
04:50Who is용ed in kinshtt?
04:51They are not using all sorts of many
04:53to be in many areas.
04:56The piglets include wilderness, farmers who are not able to use them.
05:00There are also communities where people like to live,
05:04but they are not safe to live.
05:10They are out of the front of their homes, каких маленьких financiers,
05:13their homes, their garages.
05:14There are also buildings, which they want to live.
08:05Pero, bueno, no calculo,
08:07pero si esta tecnología puede contribuir
08:10entonces va a ser más rápido y más peligroso.
08:15Es muy, muy alto en tecnología
08:18porque la alta esfera es muy difícil
08:22pero la drone puede hacer solo 20 centímetros.
08:27Entonces, si uno de los metros,
08:29la detecta no puede detectar nada.
08:32La drones usan software
08:34para mapar la exacta locación
08:36de donde las minas son detectados.
08:37La pata de la pata
08:39es también programada
08:40para que las drones flyan autonomamente.
08:42Nogoya-based ProDrone
08:47is currently testing them
08:48at its headquarters
08:49and invited a delegation
08:51of Ukrainian companies to watch.
08:53Vlade Kozak
09:08Vlade Kozak
09:22of the Ukrainian Foundation Post-Up
09:24was in Nogoya.
09:25This year we had a project
09:27with the State Emergency Service
09:29of Ukraine
09:29where we surveyed
09:315 million square metres
09:33of suspected hazardous areas
09:36and confirmed hazardous areas.
09:38So we used agricultural drones
09:39that were mostly popular in Ukraine
09:41and right now
09:43we went to the next level
09:45to try and test
09:47custom-made solutions
09:49for such applications.
09:50The widespread use of landmines
09:53has decimated farming.
09:56Before the war
09:56much of this land
09:57was used for agriculture.
09:59Ukraine exported
10:01enormous quantities of food.
10:03It was known
10:03as the breadbasket of Europe
10:05and its agriculture sector
10:07accounted for around
10:0810% of its GDP.
10:12At a side event
10:13during the conference
10:14Ukrainian chef
10:15Yevhen Klopotenko
10:16was serving up
10:17Ukraine's borscht soup
10:18made from vegetables
10:20from fields
10:20recently cleared
10:21of landmines
10:22to raise awareness.
10:24Three years ago
10:24four years ago
10:25you've been farming
10:27all of your life
10:27and then
10:28Russian wait
10:30and mined
10:31all the territories
10:32and then was the
10:33time when
10:34we pushed
10:36the Russian army back
10:37and now we have
10:37again we have
10:38these fields
10:39but they are mined
10:40and the farmers
10:41they can only farm
10:42and that's their craft.
10:44Every day
10:45they can be killed
10:45they can be killed
10:46by the drone
10:47or they can be killed
10:47by the mine
10:48so that's the real price
10:50of the food.
10:51It was a moment
10:52for local people
10:53to find out more
10:54about Ukraine
10:54and landmines
10:56and of course
10:56taste the traditional dish.
10:58now we have a lot of
11:00and there's a lot of
11:01and there's a lot of
