00:26In the following years, the camp was expanded and consisted of three main parts.
00:33Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II Birkenau, and Auschwitz III Monowitz, and about 50 subcamps.
00:41Initially, the prisoners and victims of the camp were poors.
00:46Later, Soviet prisoners of war, the Roma, and the people of different nationalities were imprisoned here.
00:52From 1942, the camp became a site of the largest mass murder in the history of humankind,
01:01which was perpetrated on European Jews, within the plan of complete extermination of this nation.
01:09The majority of the Jews deported to Auschwitz, men, women, and children,
01:13were sent to death in the Birkenau gas chambers immediately upon arrival.
01:17In total, the Germans murdered approximately 1.1 million people in Auschwitz.
01:22Mostly Jews, as well as Poles, the Roma, Soviet prisoners of war,
01:27and representatives of other nationalities and minorities.
01:30In an attempt to cover the traces of their crimes after the war,
01:34the SS men burned documents, demolished and destroyed the gas chambers and crematoria,
01:39as well as other facilities.
01:42Prisoners who were capable of marching were evacuated deep into the Reich.
01:46Those who remained in the camp were liberated by soldiers of the Red Army on 27th of January, 1945.
01:54Following a law passed by the Polish Parliament on 2nd of July, 1947,
01:59a museum was established on the area of two surviving parts of the camp,
02:04Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau.
02:07In 1979, the site was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
02:11The contemporary memorial includes, among others, the collections, archives,
02:17as well as the research, conservation and publishing centres.
02:20It is also an educational space, which the main focus is to reflect on the history of Auschwitz
02:26in the context of contemporary challenges, threats and our moral responsibility.
