Synopsis : 1916. La chorale de Ramsden, dans le Yorkshire, peine à remplacer ses chanteurs partis au combat, alors que la guerre fait rage sur le front de l'Ouest. Les ambitieux dirigeants de la chorale doivent recruter de jeunes hommes de la région et engager un nouveau chef de chœur. Malgré leurs soupçons sur son patriotisme, leur choix se porte le Dr Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), un homme motivé, intransigeant et fraîchement revenu d'Allemagne. Alors que les papiers de conscription commencent à arriver, toute la communauté découvre que la meilleure réponse au chaos qui ravage leurs vies est de faire de la musique ensemble.
