00:00New York has this Mecca-like effect, you know, kids hear about it and hear that it's a tolerant
00:20place for LGBT people.
00:22If they're using anything as information or guidance, I would say it's probably what
00:29they're picking up in the media, watching the Pride Parade on TV.
00:34What doesn't get communicated is this is a hard place to live and a hard place to make
00:39it.
00:40And so, once people get here, they kind of find themselves stuck.
00:46Hi, Kate, can we go in now?
00:55Sylvia's Place is a 10-bed emergency shelter for LGBT young people.
01:07They can stay here up to 90 days and really what we're trying to do is some basic stabilizing,
01:13getting people fed and getting them medical care.
01:16People often either come here as their first stop when they first become homeless or kind
01:22of their last stop when they've been kicked out of everywhere else.
01:27And we're one of the only shelters in the city where you can walk in off the street.
01:31So we get kids who are literally in crisis, like it's the middle of the night, I have nowhere
01:35to go and be chased by a pimp, you know.
