00:00Hello and welcome. You're watching India Today Global. I'm Geeta Mohan.
00:10Top news at this hour. India talks tough to China over Arunachal Pradesh provocation.
00:15This is Rao over a traveler from Arunachal Pradesh who was traveling from the UK to Japan via Shanghai
00:24and was detained for hours on end in Shanghai.
00:27Now, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randeer Jaeswal has put out a very strong statement
00:33after the Chinese Foreign Ministry questioned India's position on the state of Arunachal Pradesh,
00:39claiming rights over it. India says Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India
00:46and this is a self-evident fact. No amount of denial by the Chinese side is going to change this indisputable reality.
00:56Now, Prema, the woman who is traveling to Japan via Shanghai, spoke first to India Today
01:03to my colleague, Pranay Upadhyay, and he joins me for more on this.
01:08A very strong statement, Pranay, coming after the story that you broke on how one Indian woman
01:15born in Arunachal Pradesh because of the territorial issue and claims that China makes was made to wait for more than 18 hours.
01:26Geeta, now it is quite clear that the entire intention, whatever Pema has faced at the Shanghai airport
01:33was actually a malafied intention because Chinese authorities could not explain the very reason,
01:40the very objective of her detention and now this has come out with the Chinese reaction
01:46where they called Arunachal Pradesh as so-called illegal setup, which is absolutely an absurd thing
01:52because Arunachal is an inalienable part of India. In fact, Arunachal is India.
01:57So, therefore, the government of India, the Ministry of External Affairs,
02:00has strongly rejected the statement made by the Chinese authorities, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs
02:05and also clearly stated that no amount of denial can change the requirement, the very fact on ground
02:12that Arunachal is India. And in fact, the behavior, the treatment, you know, of the Chinese authorities,
02:20you know, faced by Pema was actually in contradiction to various convention.
02:24In fact, the Chinese own rules that they allow the international passengers for a transit
02:30and visa-free transit up to 24 hours. So, clearly, Pema, who was there during her transit to Japan
02:37only for three hours at the Shanghai airport and the way she was subjected, she was detained.
02:42Earlier, she was, they, in fact, denied the fact that she was not under detention.
02:48However, India contradicted this thing. India raised this issue not only in Delhi, not only in Beijing,
02:53but even at the level of, at the Shanghai level as well, at the local authorities level
02:57and with the, with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the Chinese Immigration as well.
03:02But this remains a fact that, you know, whatever rapprochement, whatever, you know, goodwill they want to show,
03:08but this remains a bone of contention. And see, you must have seen the statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs
03:14where the Chinese spokesperson surrounding clearly said they, they used the, the Chinese name of Arunachal Pradesh.
03:21They call it Southribal Ajang. And they, they said that it's an illegal sit-up, but then China never accepted this thing.
03:27So, the, clearly, intention is evident that why this thing happened and how they are making this discrimination
03:34with people born in Arunachal Pradesh when they transit, when they travel through China
03:38and why they are subjected to such kind of harassment and, and, and treatment.
03:42Right. The matter has been taken up strongly with the Chinese side and, like Pranay was saying,
03:48this is clearly in violation of several conventions governing international air travel.
03:53But let's just listen to what really happened, what Prema Wangjom really went through.
03:59An interview done by Pranay Padiya, which was broken yesterday, and there are many reactions that have come afterward,
04:06which is also, which includes the Chinese Foreign Ministry and now MEA reacting to the provocations made
04:12by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. But listen in to the conversation between Pranay Padiya and Prema Wangjom.
04:21Can you describe the moment you first realized that the Chinese immigration officers were refusing your transit
04:27and, in fact, harassing you and citing your Jaya Arunachal Pradesh birthplace as a, as a, as a point of contention
04:34and as a, as a point of harassment for you?
04:36So, yes, basically, um, I only had like a three-hour transit in Shanghai
04:41and, uh, I was transiting from there to go on to my onward journey to Japan
04:46and, um, I had actually gone past the immigration gates.
04:51It was E-gates. So, basically, I just put, put my passport through and went to the security gates.
04:57Obviously, I was in queue to get through to security
05:00when one of the officials basically came and started screaming India, India, and with my name
05:07and then she singled me out.
05:08So, I did ask her, what is the reason? Like, why are you taking me out?
05:12And she basically, uh, said to me, Arunachal, not valid passport, not valid passport.
05:18Not valid passport?
05:20Yes. So, I said, do you mean India is not a valid, like, what do you mean by that?
05:25And then she basically used Translate and said, Arunachal is part of China.
05:31Your passport is invalid.
05:33Basically, then I, they took me to the, uh, near the China Eastern Transfer Desk
05:38and right next to that is basically the immigration, uh, officer was seated who was checking, uh, various things.
05:47But they didn't give me a timeline. I said, by law, I don't know what you're saying because, um,
05:53Arunachal is part of India. I've never heard of Arunachal being part of China.
05:58We don't have any land property rights in China.
06:01We don't have any access to public funds in China.
06:04Our government is Indian.
06:05Um, so, they basically just kept holding up and did not, um, give me any specific, I said,
06:14can you show me the exact rule that says Indians cannot transit?
06:18No, your passport is not valid. It's invalid.
06:21India, no, China only. Arunachal, China only.
06:27EMEA takes up the matter with the Chinese government,
06:31but also Prema Thangjom had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi herself with that shifting focus.
06:36Now, a new push is underway in Congress to pressure Trump administration
06:40to confront Pakistan's military leadership over a pattern of transnational repression,
06:46including threats and intimidation targeting pro-democracy Pakistani activists
06:51living in the United States of America.
06:55Representatives from the Democratic Party, Greg Kasser and Pramila Jayapal,
06:59both members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee are leading a congressional letter
07:04urging the administration to hold Pakistan's military
07:07and civilian authorities accountable for actions that critics say
07:11extend far beyond the country's borders.
07:15The initiative is backed by several Pakistani-American grassroots groups.
07:19According to the groups, Pakistan's military establishment
07:22has intensified its crackdown on dissent
07:24since February 2024 disputed elections,
07:30which were marred by allegations of mass voter suppression,
07:34ballot manipulation, and fraud aimed at sidelining
07:37former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party.
07:40The United States of America has designated Venezuelan President Nicola Maduro,
07:50his top allies, and the alleged cartel de los solos
07:54as members of a foreign terrorist organization
07:58that's under the FTO,
08:00escalating Washington's crackdown on Venezuelan drug networks.
08:05Mahashweta Lala with this report.
08:06In yet another action to impose crackdown on Venezuelan drug cartels,
08:17the United States administration has designated Venezuelan President
08:21Nicola Maduro and his government allies
08:24as members of a foreign terrorist organization.
08:26The United States has also designated cartel de los solos,
08:34Spanish for cartel of the Sons,
08:36which he alleges is headed by Maduro as an FTO.
08:39Whatever they do, however they do it,
08:46wherever they do it,
08:48they will not be able to defeat Venezuela.
08:53We are invincible.
08:55Whatever they do,
08:56they have not been able to beat our homeland,
08:58and they never will.
09:02They can make faces,
09:04they can say this and that.
09:05We are shielded to guarantee what we guarantee.
09:09Bolivar's dream.
09:11Peace.
09:15This will authorize Trump to impose fresh sanctions
09:19targeting Maduro's assets and infrastructure,
09:22though according to many experts,
09:24does not authorize the use of lethal force.
09:26We view the Maduro regime as being illegitimate,
09:32and the president has been very satisfied
09:34with the successful strikes against narco-terrorists
09:37and foreign terrorists
09:39that are illegally trafficking drugs
09:41towards the United States of America.
09:43He's not going to tolerate that,
09:44and you can expect to see those strikes continue.
09:48The labeling of cartel of the Sons as a terrorist group
09:52empowers the U.S. law enforcement agencies
09:54to target and dismantle it.
09:57Maduro has always denied any involvement
09:59in drug trafficking,
10:01and his government has denied the existence of the cartel.
10:06As part of Operation Southern Spare,
10:08the U.S. military has amassed
10:10more than a dozen warships
10:11and 15,000 troops in the region.
10:15Images of the United States Chairman
10:17of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
10:19General Dan Kane,
10:21showed him inspecting the Jose Aponte airfield
10:24at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Ceiba
10:27and speaking with military officers.
10:30This comes as the U.S. plans to launch a new phase
10:33of Venezuela-related operations in the coming days.
10:37Meanwhile, a show of force was displayed
10:39at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico.
10:42The United States has been carrying out lethal strikes
10:46on drug cartel boats.
10:47They allege that boats carrying narcotics
10:50are moving along non-trafficking route in international waters.
10:53U.S. President Donald Trump has begun the process
11:06of designating certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters
11:09as well as foreign terrorist organizations
11:11and specially designated global terrorists.
11:14This would bring sanctions against one of the Arab world's
11:17oldest and most influential Islamist movements.
11:21Trump had signed an executive order directing Secretary of State
11:24Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Besant
11:27to submit a report on whether to designate
11:30any Muslim Brotherhood chapters
11:32such as those in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.
11:35It orders the secretaries to move forward
11:37with any designations within 45 days of the report.
11:41The Trump administration has accused Muslim Brotherhood factions
11:44in those countries of supporting or encouraging
11:47violent attacks against Israel and U.S. partners
11:50or of providing material support
11:53to Palestinian militant group Hamas.
12:00Australia's Senate has suspended far-right Senator Pauline Hanson
12:04for seven sitting days after she entered Parliament
12:08wearing a burqa, a move widely condemned
12:10as a political stunt aimed at bolstering her campaign
12:14to ban full-face coverings.
12:16Here's a report.
12:21Australia's Senate suspended far-right Senator Pauline Hanson
12:25for seven sitting days after she wore a burqa to Parliament.
12:31Hanson wore the burqa as a political prop in her campaign
12:35to ban the Muslim attire in public.
12:38Hanson wore the garment shortly after she was denied permission
12:42to introduce a bill that would outlaw burqas
12:45and other full-face coverings in public places in Australia.
12:49The move sparked condemnation from lawmakers
12:52leading to a suspension for seven sitting days.
12:56What else would I be talking about, Deputy President?
12:59Because if this is about the dress code,
13:03she is disrespecting a faith.
13:05She is disrespecting the Muslims out there,
13:08Muslim Australians.
13:09It's absolutely unconstitutional.
13:12This needs to be dealt with immediately before we proceed.
13:18It's disgraceful.
13:20Senator, payment.
13:21It is a shame.
13:23Thank you, President.
13:23I move that Senator Hanson be suspended for the Senate
13:25for seven sitting days.
13:27So the question is,
13:28the motion is moved by Senator Wong be agreed to.
13:30Those of that opinion say aye.
13:32Aye.
13:33Against?
13:34No.
13:34I believe the ayes have it.
13:36This is Hanson's second time wearing a burqa
13:40as a political prop to push for its national ban.
13:43But Hanson remains defiant.
13:46My position on banning the burqa,
13:48and I still stand strong by that,
13:50if they really believed in what they were saying,
13:53they didn't want to ban the burqa,
13:55yet they denied me the right to wear it on the floor of Parliament.
13:58There is no dress code on the floor of Parliament,
14:01yet I'm not allowed to wear it.
14:03So, to me, it's been hypocritical.
14:08Australia too have been critical for Hanson's political prop.
14:13I think she's a dreadful woman.
14:15And she's always tapping in to the worst things
14:22that Australians can do.
14:26And she's just an exhibitionist.
14:29And as far as that stunt she pulled yesterday,
14:33I just think it's terrible,
14:36and I hope a lot of other people do too.
14:38Hanson, a senator for Queensland,
14:42first rose to prominence in the 1990s
14:45because of a strident opposition to immigration from Asia
14:48and to asylum seekers.
14:53And has long campaigned against Islamic clothing
14:57during her parliamentary career.
15:01Hanson's one-nation party has four seats in the Senate,
15:05gaining two in May's general election
15:06amid rising support,
15:08for far-right anti-immigration policies.

15:17A day after a suicide attack
15:21at the paramilitary force headquarters
15:23in Peshawar left six dead,
15:25Pakistan bombed several areas in Afghanistan,
15:28killing ten people, including nine children.
15:31The resurgence of hostilities
15:32amid a fragile ceasefire
15:34has ignited concerns of another round of conflict
15:37between the two warring nations.
15:38Taliban said the midnight strike by Pakistan
15:41in the Gurbuz district of Khorst province
15:44targeted the house of a civilian.
15:47Airstrikes were also carried out in Kunar and Pakhtika.
15:51The outfit Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, or JUA,
15:53which comprises soldiers from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan,
15:57has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
16:00Pakistan labelled the attack a foiled terrorist plot.
16:04The incident comes less than two weeks
16:06after TTP-linked militants carried out a suicide bombing
16:09near an Islamabad court, leaving 12 dead.
