00:00As a potential SAG-AFTRA strike is looming, we're breaking down what's at stake and
00:04everything you need to know. After extending contract negotiations, SAG-AFTRA's current
00:10film and television deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers
00:14expires on July 12th at 11.59 p.m. If SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents film and TV performers,
00:21and the AMPTP, who represents the studios, can't agree on a new deal, SAG-AFTRA has authorized a
00:27strike or work stoppage, like the current writer's strike, to put pressure on AMPTP companies to give
00:32the performers' union a deal they deem fair. Meryl Streep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jennifer Lawrence,
00:38and hundreds of other high-profile actors even signed a pointed letter to SAG-AFTRA leadership,
00:43saying they are prepared to strike in order to achieve, quote, a transformative deal.
00:47While SAG-AFTRA has mounted a handful of smaller strikes in recent years, this would mark the first
00:52work stoppage against major film and TV companies in four decades.
00:55So, what are the issues that SAG-AFTRA may strike over this time? In some cases,
01:00they overlap those prioritized by the industry's writers, who are currently on strike,
01:04and its directors in their talks with the AMPTP. The directors made a deal with studios and streamers
01:09on June 3rd. Like its sister entertainment unions, SAG-AFTRA is also seeking to raise wage
01:14floors in a way that addresses exploding inflation in recent years. Streaming residuals are also a key
01:19item on the docket, as the union argues that the current formula is not taking global consumption
01:24into account enough and needs to be reworked. Other priorities include bolstering the union's
01:29health, retirement, and pension plans, as well as changing the rules around the new industry
01:33standard of self-taped auditions. What happens if there is a strike? All television and film
01:38productions starring SAG-AFTRA performers would shut down. On the TV side, work on numerous shows
01:44like Stranger Things, Abbott Elementary, Yellow Jackets, and Severance has already been halted due to the
01:50writer's strike. If there's a SAG-AFTRA strike, it would affect even more series currently in
01:54production, like House of the Dragon. American Horror Story Season 12, starring Kim Kardashian,
01:59is also believed to still be in production. The Hollywood Reporter reached out to confirm this,
02:03but received no response as of press time. In terms of films, the release date of Marvel movies
02:07like Thunderbolts and Blade, among other films, have recently been pushed due to the writer's strike.
02:13A SAG-AFTRA strike would affect the release dates of even more titles. Major movie shoots that would be
02:17shut down include Deadpool 3, Beetlejuice 2, and Gladiator 2. For much more on the potential SAG-AFTRA strike,
02:24head to THR.com. This is The Hollywood Reporter News.
