00:00Turkey farmer Larry Dahl is proud of his contribution to customers' holiday celebrations.
00:07It really is a great feeling to be able to provide someone their centerpiece.
00:15What's Thanksgiving without a turkey?
00:18A centerpiece whose wholesale price has gone through the roof.
00:21Wholesale prices for turkey are forecasted to be 40% higher this year than last year.
00:28And that's in large part because of the outbreak of high path avian influenza or bird flu.
00:34That means it's going to be a pricey trip to the grocery store then, right? Not necessarily.
00:39We're seeing some promotions being implemented in an effort to drop customers into the store.
00:45So even though prices have increased over the past couple of years,
00:50consumers can still expect to see a lot of promotions, a lot of sales as we get further into the holiday season.
00:57At one Detroit area, Meijer, which operates in six mainly Midwestern states, turkey prices are basically unchanged.
01:04At Meijer, our prices on turkeys are about the same as last year.
01:0849 cents a pound for the frozen turkeys, 39 cents if you're using M perks.
01:13But even if the turkey is cheaper than a year ago, the rest of the Thanksgiving feast may not be.
01:18So grocery prices are up 2.7%. And roughly speaking, for most products on that holiday table, prices are going to be somewhat around the same level that they were last year, a little bit higher.
01:30To save a few bucks on a holiday meal, experts recommend planning out shopping trips, considering store brands and sharing dishes as part of a potluck.
01:38For Dahl, it's less about cost and more about taste.
01:43Drive down the highway, you can see Meijer's got turkeys for 39 cents a pound.
01:47My turkeys are $6.50 a pound, and I'm sold out.
01:52But I only raised about 100 turkeys.
01:54You know, they go through 100 turkeys an hour, probably.
