Join Mark Rober and his team (Cleo Abram, Johnny Harris) as they attempt to recreate the most ingenious prison escape in history: the legendary 1962 breakout from Alcatraz by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers.

Using modern engineering, meticulous research, and the exact materials the prisoners had, the team attempts all six critical steps of the elaborate plan to answer the burning question: Did they survive?

What the Escapees Had to Accomplish:

The Decoy Heads: Recreating the incredibly realistic fake heads made from soap, concrete dust, and human hair that fooled the prison guards [01:48].

The Digging: Discovering how the prisoners managed to secretly carve out a hole in their cell walls over six months using only stolen spoons and a homemade power drill [04:30].

The Secret Workshop: Sneaking into the utility corridor and using a makeshift periscope and an accordion to mask the noise of their work for months [05:59].

The Raft: Constructing a functioning, multi-person life raft and life vests using over 50 stolen army-issued raincoats, rubber cement, and an accordion as an air pump [11:51].

The Final Step: Testing the strong tidal currents of the San Francisco Bay to determine if a homemade raft could successfully navigate to land, revealing the escapees' true, rumored destination [18:15].

Watch the engineering ingenuity of a century-old prison break and find out if Mark Rober's team could beat the odds in the frigid, shark-patrolled waters!

00:00This is Alcatraz, the world's most famously secure prison, and today I'm going to try and escape.
00:06This does not feel good, but I'll be doing it in a very specific way.
00:09By recreating the exact same actions these three daring prisoners took, this is a tight squeeze,
00:15when they executed their year-long plan in what many consider to be the most ingenious prison escape in recorded history.
00:22So to pull this off, they gave me unrestricted access to the whole prison,
00:25because our goal is to use modern technology along with our own engineering skills.
00:30To determine once and for all whether these three escapees actually made it safely to land,
00:35Guys, we are no longer in a row,
00:37or if they vanish forever in the frigid, shark-riddled waters of the San Francisco Bay.
00:41That's it, we're gonna make it!
00:42We're gonna make it!
00:46I cannot believe they would spend 23 hours a day in this tiny little cell.
00:52On June 11, 1962, at 9.30pm, this exact jail cell would have seemed pretty unremarkable
00:58to any of the guards on duty, and to all but three of the prisoners held here on the island.
01:03Because that's the night those three prisoners decided they were finally gonna attempt their escape
01:07after nearly a year of meticulous planning and preparations.
01:11But in order to pull this off, starting right here in their cells,
01:14they would need to execute their elaborate six-part escape plan flawlessly,
01:18eventually taking them up and out of the prison, down to the water, and across the bay to their freedom.
01:23And to pull this off would require countless strokes of genius, like fake vents to cover up
01:29their digging progress, fake bolts made from sculpted soap, or a homemade raft fashioned
01:34from prison-issued raincoats.
01:35But all six of those critical steps started right back here with the decoy,
01:39moments after lights out at 9.35pm.
01:42Since they weren't expected out of bed until roll call the next morning,
01:45they needed a way to not sound the alarms with empty beds when guards came by
01:49to perform head counts several times during the night. So they placed fake heads like these on
01:53their pillows that they had spent two months crafting out of soap, concrete dust, toothpaste,
01:59toilet paper, and actual human hair.
02:01This is kind of creepy and it shows how good the heads are because I feel like
02:05I'm in a jail cell with a sleeping man just out of the corner of my eye.
02:09The only thing that's missing is the snoring.
02:11Now at this point it's worth mentioning these weren't your average prisoners.
02:14Frank Boris had an IQ of 130 and he was the mastermind who planned everything.
02:19Then brothers John and Clarence Anglin, while not as smart as Frank,
02:22were resourceful and good with tools.
02:24All three had previously escaped from other prisons so they were sent to Alcatraz
02:28because no one had successfully escaped in its 28 year history.
02:32So in order to assess and truly appreciate every aspect of their bootleg prison engineering,
02:37I needed to recreate all the steps they took in their escape.
02:40So I assembled a prison break team of my own with Johnny Harris and Cleo Abram.
02:46Cleo would be the mastermind and Johnny and I would be the slightly dumber pair of brothers.
02:51Really, really good.
02:52So we gathered up all the exact same materials they had at their disposal.
02:56Never made a fake head before, but I think we can do it.
02:58And began the first test.
03:00I'm going to start mixing.
03:03Mixing what?
03:04When it comes to arts and crafts.
03:05It's a good idea.
03:06It's fair to say.
03:09I just need your face.
03:10This scene lacked experience.
03:12This is Mark Rober with his hat.
03:13Despite all that, I think they turned out pretty good.
03:16These are amazing.
03:17As it turned out, all you really needed to do was bring in your most artistic friend,
03:20Brooke.
03:20Whose do you want to start with?
03:22I will start with, oh god.
03:25Brooke, save us.
03:26And having Brooke to help us actually put us on par with the original escapees,
03:30because they had their own resident artist in one of the brothers, Clarence Anglin,
03:34who also worked maintenance and painted as a hobby, so he provided the paint.
03:37His brother John, on the other hand, worked in the barber shop,
03:40so he provided the actual human hair they used.
03:43Hello.
03:44Is that how you see me?
03:45Here's Mark.
03:47Oh my god.
03:49So with our picture-perfect facsimile finished,
03:51we put our heads to the test with prison guard Bam.
03:53Prisoner check.
03:54Who had been told all three of us remained asleep in our beds.
03:58And our outcome was significantly different than theirs.
04:00What?
04:01I told you, Johnny.
04:03It almost worked.
04:04Why are your eyes so wide open like this?
04:07Providing early evidence, these weren't your average prisoners.
04:09All right, next test.
04:11Now that their diversion was set, at 9.37 p.m., they grabbed some tools and
04:15crawled through a hole in their gel cell wall they had spent the previous six months secretly
04:19digging out.
04:20So this is the actual hole they crawled through to escape.
04:23As you can see, it is not very large.
04:25Wow.
04:26This is a very tight squeeze.
04:29Ow.
04:29To give themselves a head start on digging, they decided to enlarge an already existing
04:33air vent hole underneath each of their sinks.
04:35And since they obviously didn't have access to power tools, they had to get creative,
04:39primarily using stolen spoons from the cafeteria that they'd fashioned into picks by removing
04:43the round parts.
04:44So to gain a better appreciation for what this would actually take, it was time for my jailbreak
04:48crew to get to work on a replica prison cell we built in Crunch Labs using concrete that
04:52was similar to what they would have faced.
04:54My fingers are starting to get tired and it's literally-
04:56Wow, you're so soft.
04:57It quickly became clear why it would have taken them months.
05:00Prison breaking is hard!
05:02To painstakingly scrape their way to a hole big enough to escape from.
05:06Oh, Jesus.
05:07Sorry.
05:09Which begs the question, how do you cover up your digging progress so the guards don't
05:12discover it during their routine room inspection?
05:15So to answer that question, I headed to the prison archives to meet a good friend of mine,
05:19Adam Savage.
05:20Adam!
05:21How are you doing, Ned?
05:22Because he has a lot of myth-busting knowledge on this topic.
05:25We didn't know that there were still pieces of the original thing until we called over here and
05:29they're like, yeah, come on down, we can show them to you.
05:30One of the first things he showed me was this.
05:32Basically, they created an incredibly realistic vent cover made from just cardboard, notebook
05:36covers, and soap, which they then painted prison green using spare paint they stole from a maintenance
05:41shed.
05:42From a maker standpoint, this is a masterpiece.
05:46Yeah.
05:46To make this out of homegrown materials you're scabbing from the prison shop
05:50and to have looked this good like a concrete wall is incredible.
05:54Back in prison, we were making some progress, but it wasn't exactly quiet work.
05:59Our three escapees faced this same issue and came up with a clever solution.
06:03Every night from 5.30 to 7 was music hour for all the inmates, so one of them would loudly
06:07play an accordion while one kept watch for guards with a makeshift periscope,
06:11and the third one scraped away.
06:12And this noise management system turned out to be pretty effective.
06:17Oh my god, that's so loud.
06:19Give me the job!
06:23We're escaping from Alcatraz.
06:25Don't say that out loud.
06:27Sorry, don't say, no.
06:28Sorry.
06:29Our efforts were proving that digging through concrete with Headless Spoon was very slow work.
06:33And this must have been something Frank Morris, the mastermind, concluded as well.
06:37Because he ended up getting his hands on an old vacuum used for maintenance,
06:41exactly like the model shown here, and then if you pop off the top shell and then remove the fan assembly, you will find
06:47We have a lot of fine power drill and that ought to speed things up a little bit
06:51All the inmates had power outlets in their cells that allowed them to use things like electric shavers or in this case
06:57Bootleg engineered power drills. So with the accordion once again masking the sound
07:02It resorted to an improved method of drilling a series of holes and then using the spoons to remove the remaining excess
07:11Material between the hole and as much as this did increase our output as well
07:14It was clear this would still take weeks and I wanted to get to the crawl through test
07:18So I raised the white flag and resorted to an air hammer, which they definitely didn't have at their disposal
07:24Until the hole was the exact same size as the holes in their cells look at how much like
07:29Concrete they would have had to remove from the premises, right?
07:32Wow
07:33Put it all in their pocket put it out in the yard. Yeah, but this is the actual size of the hole they escaped from
07:40Smell the freedom so it turns out they were like a hundred and thirty five pounds. These are tiny dude. They're tiny dude
07:47If my head will fit through here
07:50Hot goes first now. I have to make it. Oh crap. Oh, there's no way. Let's push him
07:55Oh
07:57No, there's no way this guy's done through all that work. Ah
08:02Johnny makes things up with the feet first approach
08:10Need the Vaseline which meant it all came down to Cleo. I can totally do this. Oh my god. She's doing it. She's oh my god
08:17She knew it
08:26Bro, she's already gone. Wow. Okay. Hi. Well, you want a game of chick-tack-toe I guess
08:32Okay back to our prisoners with step two out of the way at 9 48 p.m
08:36They found themselves in sort of a secret passageway between the cells
08:40The problem was they'd have to silently make their way to step three that was four stories above them
08:44Here's the holes. It would crawl out right here to this utility corner, which honestly is pretty spacious
08:50But more importantly they had to make it to the loft and there's all these pipes that basically act as ladders that lead them all the way up to
08:57right
08:59Here
08:59This is wild. This was the roof of the cell block
09:03But when they got here that night, there was already a homemade life raft and life vests homemade paddles and makeshift flashlights
09:09Waiting for them and that's because this wasn't their first time up here
09:13They had been sneaking up here for months using the same decoy heads and fake vent covers
09:18Bringing up their hidden homemade tools every night as they fabricated their means for escape
09:23And they knew about this spot because one of them was actually assigned to work up here for a couple hours during the day
09:28painting the ceiling and doing general maintenance under the watchful eyes of the guards patrolling right across the hall
09:34So they devised a plan and every day he would sweep dust down onto the polished floors below
09:39And when the guards and other prisoners eventually complained about the mess, he proposed a simple solution
09:43Hanging up blankets in these locations to stop the dust from falling down creating themselves a private little workshop in the process
09:51So of course once they hang out the blankets that means they could work up here undetected for months coming up every night doing some work
09:58Crawling down in the morning Frank Morris the mastermind
10:01She's an absolute genius and of course it makes sense then why during the day they'd work as slowly as possible
10:08Taking months to not even finish painting the whole ceiling. Oh, this is cool
10:12So you could literally see how far he made it over just to buy themselves more time
10:17Frank worked in the library which gave him access to reading materials like popular mechanics
10:21Where he learned some of the skills they used for designing their paddles and constructing the raft and life preservers made from over 50 army issued raincoats
10:29They had borrowed or stole from other inmates and bear in mind. These weren't exactly ideal working munitions
10:37Any noise they make up here just echoes throughout the entire prison on top of that
10:43This is where the guards would patrol back and forth with Thompson sub machine guns keeping an eye on all the prisoners
10:50So it's wild that just 15 feet away these guys were literally fabricating their means for escape
10:56And now that they had completed step 3 and we're ready to head to the roof with all their provisions
11:00It was our turn to do the same by building the actual rafts we would use to make our own escape
11:05So now we're up to the loft we're out of ourselves
11:07But the next big step is how do you make it through these frigid shark infested waters?
11:12What's cool is they had these popular mechanics magazines
11:16Inside was how to make a homemade life preserver
11:19No way
11:21Literally your life preserver how will it behave if you need it
11:24This is the one I feel like is the most nonsensical
11:26It's such a refined construction of a life vest
11:29I feel like this is them showing off
11:31This is absolutely them showing off
11:32It's like get a piece of foam in like a milk jug
11:35You know it's doing the same thing
11:37Is this a raft?
11:38Our theory was that they made four tubes and then realized we don't need the second short one
11:42Because we can just make it a long triangle
11:44These tubes are something like 14 feet?
11:47Yeah
11:47That's a yacht
11:48Now those instructions were applicable for the typical material you find in a rain jacket
11:52So these guys collected like 56 of them
11:54They made life preservers in a raft which we are about to do
11:57These are some smart dudes
11:58MacGyvered on steroids
12:00Here we go
12:00We found a roll of rubberized canvas that matched the material of the prison issue rain jackets
12:05And then cut them into rain jacket size strips
12:08Oh yeah
12:09Wow that's satisfying
12:10Satisfying flow
12:11Wow
12:12Oh that was so unsatisfying
12:14And then we used period accurate rubber cement to glue the segments together with two and a half inch seams
12:20Our life depends on these seams
12:21If one of these even has a little leak
12:23Oh
12:24My applicator already broke
12:26Are there more applicators?
12:27And then fully seal the deal
12:29With some hammer ties
12:31And if this seems insanely loud don't worry
12:37I'm going to cover it up
12:38We brought the accordion
12:40The guards will have no idea what we're doing
12:43And with that we rolled it onto itself
12:48Then sealed the ends
12:49Which led to the final test
12:51Seeing if we could inflate it using the same secret weapon the escapees had
12:55Oh yes
12:56They took an accordion and actually used it as an air pump
12:59Yeah
13:00There you go
13:00It's pretty strong
13:01See
13:01Okay
13:02The fate of our survival rests on this moment
13:05This is the actual raft we will be using to cross the shark infested Alcatraz waters
13:10Here we go
13:11Oh my god it's working
13:13It's working
13:14Keep going
13:14And over the course of about 37 squeaky pumps
13:17We had a fully inflated raft
13:19The accordion is the unsung hero
13:21Or I guess it's
13:22A little bit sung
13:23Yeah
13:23But the all important question was
13:25Listen for a leak
13:26Is it fully airtight?
13:33Nothing
13:33Cleo's overjoyed response made it clear that if we just repeated that exact same thing
13:38Two more times
13:39We'd have a fully functioning raft
13:41Next for the inmates was making it onto the roof
13:45But before they do that
13:46It's worth looking at their tools
13:47And appreciating that while they didn't have college degrees
13:50They certainly thought like engineers
13:52Because they were resilient problem solvers
13:54And to me
13:55This is what it means to think like an engineer
13:57And this is such an important skill to develop for life
14:00It's written right on the side of every Crunch Labs build box
14:03That gets delivered to your door every month
14:05Where we build a really fun toy together
14:06And then learn all about the fascinating physics that makes them work
14:10But the best part is
14:11Just like I do with my YouTube videos
14:13We hide the vegetables
14:15So you're learning all these useful life skills like resilience
14:18But every step of the journey is really fun
14:21On top of that
14:21Each month your box has a chance to contain the platinum ticket
14:24And if you get it
14:25Then you're coming out to Crunch Labs
14:27To build with me and my team for a day
14:29So if you're a kid looking for something to put at the top of your Christmas list
14:33Or you're just looking to be the household hero
14:35By giving it to someone else
14:36Head to CrunchLabs.com
14:38Where we're giving away two free boxes for our holiday special
14:40And where you'll find
14:41We finally completed our trilogy of creative engineering subscription box options
14:45Now ranging from ages 6 to 106
14:48Back with our escapees
14:49At 10.45pm
14:51They were now at step 4 of their escape plan
14:53Ready to head to the roof through this vent
14:56This right here is the vent they did it through
14:58Now they had previously sawed through the bolt that held the vent shut
15:01And then replaced it with a fake bolt made of soap
15:04They had painted to look real
15:05They'd also previously bent away a restriction bar
15:08Intended to keep a human from fitting through the ventilation pipe
15:11Using an ingenious homemade bar spreader
15:14Consisting of two opposite threaded bolts
15:16With a threaded turnbuckle in the middle
15:18So when they tightened the turnbuckle with their homemade wrench
15:21The two bolt heads would slowly deform their restriction bar
15:24Until there was room enough to slip through
15:26So they busted through, pushed up the metal vent
15:29Pushed out their rafts
15:30And crawled to the roof at the potential freedom
15:32We know the exact time they got on the roof
15:34Because a guard and several inmates reported hearing a loud bang
15:37If you had to push this thing over
15:40It landed on the roof
15:41That's going to make a lot of noise
15:43That's loud
15:45You can just imagine
15:46They've made it up on the roof
15:47They've got their rafts
15:49They're running to the edge
15:50They've got the city of San Francisco behind them
15:52Golden Gate Bridge to their left
15:54And they know they are mere hours away from drowning in these frigid waters
15:59For total freedom
16:01It's one or the other
16:02So they came here to the edge of the roof
16:04Then climbed down the water pipe
16:06Made their way along the exercise yard
16:08Down by the water tower and around the power station
16:11Now what's truly remarkable about that route
16:13Is they'd have to scale two separate 12 foot barbed wire fences
16:16With all their gear in tow
16:17While going undetected by the armed guards on the search towers
16:20Who were ordered to shoot on sight any prisoner attempting to escape
16:23The final part of the escape
16:25Conveniently
16:27Where you can't be seen by the guard tower
16:29They made their way down this embankment
16:31And entered the water right here
16:33Now this beach wasn't the easiest spot for them to access
16:36But mastermind Frank chose it specifically
16:39Because it was in a blind spot for all the guard tower searchlights
16:42So now that they were down by the water's edge
16:44They inflated the rafts using the modified accordion
16:46They turned into an air pump
16:47And set off to Angel Island
16:49So to get a sense of whether this would even be remotely possible in a homemade raft
16:53We launched our own homemade raft from a beach location that was very similar to theirs
16:57Go go go go go
16:58Careful careful I don't want you to break it
16:59This is it guys
17:00This has to work
17:01Okay time to start making the music
17:03Get in there
17:04I'll hold you pump
17:05Johnny why don't you start filling one in the other's with your mouth
17:07Okay
17:08Can you imagine being here on the beach
17:09Being like the guards might come at any moment
17:11Blow harder Johnny
17:13Come on Johnny
17:14This is not easy
17:15It's like glue
17:19Oh no
17:21I didn't prepare for this
17:22Let's get these on
17:23Watch your eye
17:24Oh shoot
17:25It just broke
17:26Oh shoot
17:27It still works
17:28Getting the core work out of here
17:32Guys I'm almost full
17:32This one's full
17:33No way this lasts
17:35This is the first thing I'm dishing
17:36Alright we gotta get in the water
17:38Let's get in the water
17:39Go go go go go
17:40Get in there
17:41Oh it's full
17:41Alright Cleo get in
17:42Get in Cleo
17:43Careful on those seams
17:44Now you'll notice it's not exactly dark
17:55Even though we know they launched after lights out in the evening
17:58That's because we ran some tests of our own
18:00By strapping 20 GPS devices in waterproof containers to some driftwood
18:04And then we threw them in the water near their launch spot
18:06At various times in the tide cycle
18:08And then we tracked where they ended up
18:10And this experiment yielded some very unexpected results
18:13Whoa
18:14We're looking at some movement here
18:16Wait this is not what I was expecting to see
18:18We're trying to go over here
18:19Not now
18:21Because of the strong current the driftwood logs got caught up in
18:24None of them even came close to making it to their intended destination
18:27Angel Island
18:28Either as the current came in on high tide
18:30Or went out on low tide
18:31In fact of all the logs we threw in
18:33Only a few ever made it to land
18:35During an ideal 30 minute tidal window
18:37At a location right about here next to the Golden Gate Bridge
18:40And this is something Frank probably knew as well
18:42By observing debris in the water moving with the tides
18:45Meaning all their rumored plans for heading to Angel Island were just diversions
18:49And their real plan was to land here all along
18:51So to maximize our chance of a successful escape
18:54We had entered the water at the same perfect 30 minute tidal window
18:57Based on the tides for our day
18:59Card paddling to freedom folks
19:01The tide is just pulling us
19:03Let's go
19:03We're moving so fast man
19:05Guys this is epic
19:07Look at this
19:08Look at this
19:09Let's go
19:12Focus around this is beautiful
19:16We're free
19:17Oh my god
19:19Wow this is amazing
19:21Battle
19:22Battle
19:22We were feeling optimistic
19:24But once we got about a quarter of the way to the bridge
19:27The waves drastically increased in size
19:30Wave waves
19:31Oh these waves are huge
19:33Oh my wave
19:34Oh my
19:35I was getting queasy fast
19:38So I ditched the paddle
19:39And it opted a new strategy
19:40Okay at this point
19:42You live and die by the current
19:43Paddling is just totally too far
19:45It's just about surviving
19:46And like floating our way in the current
19:48A large portion of my body
19:50Is underwater right now
19:52I'm just like engulfed in this thing
19:54I cannot move
19:56We're basically sitting
19:57In just a massive life preserver
19:59Like the world's most dangerous water vent
20:01With like sharks swimming around you
20:03And this was a legitimate concern
20:05Here's an actual clip
20:06Right off the shore of Alcatraz
20:08Of a great white shark
20:09Hunting a seal
20:10In fact when I was scouting out the location
20:12The inmates launched their raft
20:14I saw another seal right off the shore
20:16You know what he seals
20:17Sharks
20:18To make matters worse
20:20I knew in this area
20:21Great whites hunted primarily
20:23At dawn and dusk
20:24It gives you some real appreciation
20:26For what and how they did this
20:28How do you think they were feeling
20:29If they got this far?
20:31Victorious
20:31This is a win already
20:32Yeah
20:33But not home free yet
20:34Big wings
20:35Oh my goodness
20:37These are six footers
20:38These are white cats
20:39Literal white cats
20:41Oh my god
20:42We're all of them
20:44Cap time
20:45It is tumultuous
20:46On the open sea
20:47And despite the rough waters
20:48Our great escape
20:49Was going pretty well
20:50Right up until the raft started deflating
20:52We're definitely losing air
20:54This is not cutting
20:55The moment I put a little bit of pressure on it
20:57Air comes rushing out
20:58I'm holding on tight right here
21:00Making sure it doesn't leak
21:01And I'm holding this one on this side
21:03And since our trusty accordion pump
21:05Was back on shore
21:05We had to get creative
21:07Get some air back in there please folks
21:09Our survival depends on it
21:11And to make matters worse
21:12Water everywhere in here
21:14This is more than that time
21:16Dude
21:16We are up to our waist in water
21:18The waves are just so high
21:20The water is freezing cold
21:22But Alcatraz is fading into the distance
21:25And the Golden Gate Bridge
21:27Is coming closer
21:28And this was good news
21:29Because even if Johnny made it
21:31It was looking more and more likely
21:33His dinner wouldn't
21:34I'm nauseous
21:35Johnny
21:35You better be paddling
21:37Oh god it might vomit
21:39Sorry
21:39Okay
21:40I'm paddling
21:41I'm paddling
21:43To the end
21:44I will not be defeated
21:46I will not be defeated
21:49Johnny
21:49Oh I'm so nauseous
21:52This is for freedom
21:53For freedom
21:54Go Cleo
21:56We're left with me
21:56We're thinking so much faster
21:58When our power
21:59But you know what
22:00We've got heart
22:01And if you've got heart
22:03You've got freedom
22:05That's not actually true
22:06We are really putting on
22:08A lot of water
22:08That is actually true
22:09We can do this guys
22:11We can do this
22:11Guys the bridge is right
22:13The bridge is right there
22:14I see the bridge
22:14Alcatraz is fading with every minute
22:16Guys we are no longer in a raft
22:18This is the ocean
22:20We are going down
22:22I'm Johnny
22:23I'm up to my freedom now
22:25I'm like mostly underwater
22:26No
22:27Are you okay?
22:29No we don't
22:30Stay with us
22:31Stay with us
22:31Johnny looked like he had a plan
22:34To fix our sinking situation
22:35But it turns out
22:36He was thinking more about content
22:38Than survival
22:39We're back together again
22:40Woo
22:41Which makes this a good time to mention
22:43No matter what happens here
22:44You should know
22:45They both have incredible YouTube channels
22:47Like Cleo just uploaded a video
22:48About what we could actually do
22:50If a giant asteroid
22:51Were headed towards Earth
22:52An asteroid impact is worse
22:53Than you might think
22:54And Johnny just uploaded a video
22:56About the infamous
22:57El Chapo prison escape in Mexico
22:59This place was considered
23:00Inescapable
23:01But even still
23:02He had escaped through
23:03One of his tunnels
23:04It's so close
23:05The current's taking us
23:06It still has our foot
23:08Hold on
23:08Hold on
23:09I am
23:09The current had done
23:10About 90% of the work for us
23:12And now it was up to us
23:13To make the final push to freedom
23:15Big push
23:16Go big push
23:17Come on
23:17We're so close
23:18We're so close
23:18We're so close
23:19I love you
23:20Which would have been much easier
23:22Without my prison issued footwear
23:24He's still talking
23:24Stop
23:25Oh my god
23:27Come on
23:28We're there
23:29We're free
23:30Oh my god
23:31Land
23:32Land
23:32Land
23:33Oh my god
23:33We made it
23:34We made it
23:35We made it
23:35We made it
23:36We actually
23:37We're scared from all the trash
23:39We actually did it
23:41We're free
23:42Oh my god
23:44I'm so tired right now
23:46That's one of the hardest things
23:47I've ever done
23:48Yeah
23:48So after all that
23:49The question that remains
23:50Is did they survive that final step
23:53Now what we know for sure
23:54Is the FBI recovered
23:55Evidence of their escape
23:56Like paddles
23:57Or life jackets
23:58In these four locations
23:59But what we also know
24:01Is on any given night
24:02There's only a 30 minute window
24:03Where the high tide current
24:04Will take you from Alcatraz
24:06Safely to land
24:07And any attempt
24:08Outside that time frame
24:09Basically means
24:10Certain death
24:11From hypothermia
24:12Or drowning
24:12And thanks to a lot of modern science
24:14We of course knew exactly
24:15When that 30 minute window
24:16Was for our escape
24:17And so after checking
24:18The historic tide records
24:20On the exact night
24:21Of their escape
24:21For them
24:22That vital window
24:23Would be between
24:241130 and midnight
24:25And according to the FBI records
24:27Ingenious Frank Morris
24:29With access to none of the data
24:30We had
24:31Pushed off
24:31Right in that sweet spot
24:33At 1140pm
24:34Now even with all that
24:37Realistically
24:38I still put their odds
24:39At less than a 50% chance
24:41Of surviving the final step
24:43But if anyone
24:43Was going to beat those odds
24:45It would be the serial escape artist
24:47Genius IQ
24:48Bonafide bootleg prison engineer
24:51Frank Morris
