Aaron Pierre is set to play Green Lantern John Stewart in the DC Studios and HBO series 'Lanterns.' The casting caps one of the more scrutinized actor searches in some time. Not only is the show the first major TV endeavor from DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, but the role of Stewart carries much significance, as the fan-favorite comic book character was one of DC’s first Black superheroes.

00:26The intense casting process came down to Pierre and Stéphane James,

00:30who was on the festival circuit with the drama The Piano Lesson.

00:34Both participated in screen tests, with the actors squaring off against the already cast Kyle Chandler on Thursday and Friday.

00:41Pierre brings heat to the show.

00:43His leading turn in Rebel Ridge debuted on Netflix on September 6th

00:47and was the number one title worldwide on the platform for three weeks in a row.

00:51Lanterns is said to have a gritty, true detective vibe.

00:53It follows Hal Jordan, who will be played by Chandler.

00:57Jordan is a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns.

01:01The series sees him reluctantly mentor Stewart, a young Green Lantern.

01:05In the series, the two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery

01:09as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
