00:00The son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry is saying he didn't entirely appreciate an SNL
00:05skit from 1986, in which Captain James T. Kirk himself, William Shatner, told Trekkies to
00:10get a life. In the infamous skit, Shatner played a version of himself at a Star Trek convention
00:15where diehard fans asked detailed questions about the series. Shatner teased during the skit,
00:21get a life, will you people? For crying out loud, it's just a TV show. I mean, look at you,
00:26look at the way you're dressed. In an interview to celebrate the franchise turning 55 this month,
00:31Rod Roddenberry, producer of several Star Trek projects and son of the legendary sci-fi franchise
00:36creator, told The Hollywood Reporter that while some found the moment to be hilarious,
00:40he found it surprising and to a degree mean-spirited. I never really appreciated that
00:45skit because I think it was demeaning to the fans. I think it was disrespectful, especially for a
00:50character who is an open-minded, intelligent leader. Because comic and sci-fi cons were once an easy
00:55target for bullying, Roddenberry says Shatner using SNL to poke fun and even further ostracize
01:01the group was disheartening, adding, but I don't condemn it in any way. It's Saturday Night Live
01:05and it's all fun. Although the younger Roddenberry didn't know what his father thought of the moment
01:10since he passed when he was 17 years old, it was fans who made the creator's son a fan.
01:15They were my introduction to Star Trek. They're the ones who came up to me and said,
01:19Star Trek inspired me. And because of Star Trek, I'm now a teacher, a doctor, whatever the case is.
01:24And I owe that to Star Trek. For more on this story, head to THR.com.
