How ABC was going to handle the controversy that nearly derailed its popular summer spinoff series 'Bachelor in Paradise' was a swirling question heading into last week's two-night premiere.
Transcript
00:00The two-night season premiere of Bachelor in Paradise drew mixed reactions for how it handled
00:04the controversy surrounding a sexual encounter between contestants Corinne Olympios and
00:09Demario Jackson. The encounter sparked an on-set investigation that temporarily shut down
00:14production. Bachelor alums Ben Higgins and Ashley Iconetti told The Hollywood Reporter
00:18their thoughts on how the situation was handled on air.
00:30Ashley added,
00:32But the reaction from many media outlets to the episode seemed to be one of disappointment.
00:48USA Today called the episode painful and scripted, while TV Guide said the show handled the situation
00:54with tone-deafness and bad taste. Ben said,
01:00Ashley added that as part of the Bachelor family, she wanted her friends to be protected and wasn't
01:16looking for something juicy and dramatic to unfold. She also said of the episode,
01:21I don't love the way the girls have treated Corinne. They all immediately unfollowed her on Instagram
01:26as soon as this scandal broke. I believe the girls were mad at Corinne for the sole reason
01:30that she may have stolen their time on Paradise, and that's why they are bitter towards her.
01:34She added,
01:35They seemed to be very Team Demario on the episode. I completely understand how Demario's name
01:41will always be attached to this situation on Google and how detrimental that can be to his life,
01:45but I feel like there wasn't a lot of sensitivity to her situation. The one thing I will say is that
01:50I didn't like her statement calling herself a victim. Ashley added that she would love to have
01:55Corinne publicly explain what the victim comment was all about. Senior Vice President of Alternative
02:00Series at ABC, Robert Mills, and host Chris Harrison, have commented on the new rules put in place for
02:05drinking and vocalizing consent after the incident. Higgins said of the new rules,
02:10I heard that before anyone hooked up or kissed anyone, they had to sit down in front of a camera
02:14and consent to it. He went on to say,
02:16Maybe it will only last one season, but the restrictions on things seems like babysitting,
02:21and it's unfortunate that people who are 23, 24, 25, and all the way up to 37 still need to be babysat.
