An award-winning 1971 Ford Maverick has made a name for itself in Ohio due to its turbo speed and perfect blend of classic and modern style. Owned by racing driver Jimmy Shaw, the Ford Maverick, which was originally produced as an economy car, has become a rule-bending ride – putting the 70s car back on the map.

00:00I found this little car on eBay. I never would have thought it would have turned out this way.
00:07I've never seen another Maverick quite like this one.
00:11I've owned probably over two or three hundred cars. To me,
00:21but hot riding is old school and new school. I love and enjoy the things I grew up with.
00:25And this 1971 Ford is the perfect blend of past and present.
00:32You're taking something and making it your own.
00:35It's a Maverick. I mean, when's the last time you saw a Maverick done?
00:38I've never seen another Maverick quite like this one.
00:42It started out probably about five or six years ago. I found this little car on eBay.
00:47And then I got to thinking, I've always wanted to run 200 miles an hour.
00:51So I said, let's build a car that would do that.
00:53To make his dream reality, Jimmy employed the services of father and son duo, Greenin.
01:00This Maverick ranks very high with all the builds that we've done over the years.
01:05On this car, comparing it to the original, from the fender flares up on the car is basically
01:11untouched Ford sheet metal and trim around the top. The lines looked great and we still wanted
01:17people to be able to recognize the car and it not look like something else. We still wanted it to be a
01:21Maverick. Then from there down, it's all been heavily modified.
01:26Probably the best part about the car, to me, is the flares on the fenders. It looks so good.
01:30It's not out of place. It doesn't look gawky. And it's a simple change.
01:35Today, the Mavericks at the Good Guys show in Columbus, Ohio.
01:39Inside, we have the race pack for your speedometer, all your gauges. We have the race seats. We have the
01:46road cage to be safe. We have a quarter inch metal that's been able to make the tunnel. That way,
01:52we have a transmission explosion, drive shaft come loose. I'm safe in the car. I'm too old to have
01:59problems. The car's top speed so far has been 202.7 mile an hour. This one has just kind of been
02:06nudged out there a little farther as far as what it can do.
02:10Nudged out, you say? I think that may be somewhat of an understatement.
02:22They're going to judge it on how the handle's out there on the course.
02:27They want you to drive the cars.
02:29They want you to use it and abuse it.
02:43It felt good. If we could have made a few more passes, I think we could have kept picking it up.
02:47And Jimmy loves showing off his unique machine.
02:52Oh man, we've had so many compliments. You still have a lot of people come and say,
02:56what is that? You know, they don't realize it's a Maverick. They kind of like, man,
03:00no one's ever done a Maverick like this before.
03:02He made a car perform and look good at the same time. His build qualities are phenomenal. His
03:07attention to detail is unmatched and the car goes over 200 miles an hour. So, I mean,
03:12not a lot of people can say that with a build like that.
03:15This car is right there at the top of my list of all my cars right now. It's just so different.
03:19This is something that I never would have thought it would have turned out this way.
03:26I never would have thought it would have turned out this way.
03:28I never would have thought it would have done it.
03:29I never would have thought it would have turned out this way.
03:32It would have thought it would have been more well.
03:34It's just so different.
03:36I said, no, you know, how are we doing now?
03:38You wouldn't even be seeing the faces of those teams.
03:40It's different from the outside.
03:42I'm just listening to it.
03:43I don't know.
03:44I know how I want the whole family is, but you're meeting them right now.
03:46I just want to make the faces of that.
03:48I'm not sure.
