00:00And now, ladies and gentlemen, to sleep, perchance, to dream, we come to El Sueno, La Cama, one of Frida Kahlo's most storied, poignant, and psychologically complex self-portraits.
00:11This painting has broken the record for the most expensive artwork ever created by a woman.
00:17The piece, titled Sleep, is by the late Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
00:22It sold for $54.7 million at a public auction held by Sotheby's, a price nearly 1,000 times higher than what it achieved the last time it appeared in 1980, when it sold for $51,000.
00:38The painting was created in 1940.
00:42Kahlo depicts herself sleeping on a colonial-style wooden bed, wrapped in a golden blanket embroidered with veins.
00:48Above her lies a skeleton enveloped in strands of dynamism, holding a bouquet of flowers in its hand.
