00:00:16It's the Detroit Lions and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it's kicking off next on Madden NFL 23.
00:00:23You're originally opened in 1995 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium where this franchise entered the NFL.
00:00:34We welcome you to Jacksonville and TIAA Big Field.
00:00:38Coming up, we've got what should prove to be a good one between the Detroit Lions and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

00:02:22They're led by the number one overall pick in the 2021 draft, Trevor Lawrence.
00:02:27The word is potential, potential, potential.
00:02:29Think about this guy from the time he was in high school, one of the top prospects going to college, coming out of college.
00:02:35Mentioned as a generational type quarterback.
00:02:37He looks the part, tall, big arm, surveys the field, and can take off and run when under duress.
00:02:44Come on, let's go!
00:03:03They'll run it.
00:03:04This is James Robinson.
00:03:06And right away they're going to stack him up, right at the line of scrimmage.
00:03:09Call it no gain on the game's first play, and it's second down now.
00:03:15Well done to sniff that out defensively.
00:03:17He had it diagnosed pretty quickly.
00:03:19I love that description because diagnosed is perfect on that one.
00:03:23Read his keys, made the play, and he couldn't even get going moving the football.
00:03:28Looking to throw on second down.
00:03:31Lawrence.
00:03:31And he's going to be dropped, throwing a pick up at seven.
00:03:34Passed the 30 to the 32.
00:03:36That's a staple of this offense, drag round to the tight end.
00:03:40James unable to use his size to break off much more yardage after the catch, but still an effective game nonetheless.
00:03:47Third play in this opening drive as they're looking at a third and three.
00:03:53Here's Lawrence to throw.
00:03:56This one complete to Christian Kirk.
00:03:58And he'll be taken down, but not before they work it across midfield.
00:04:05And they convert on third with a gain of 22.
00:04:10But it appears that they read man defense and went to the out route.
00:04:13And what you have to do on that one is the receiver's got to make sure he works the defender
00:04:17towards the middle of the field to give himself space to cut to the outside
00:04:21and have that ball delivered with good timing.
00:04:23And they got it done.
00:04:24So the ball moves into Lyon territory now.
00:04:39Here's first and 10 at the 47.

00:04:48And he's left with no option here but to throw it away.
00:04:51Well, sometimes the defense just beats you.

00:04:58So instead of trying to throw into tight coverage,
00:05:00he found a way to throw it away and come back and try again the next down.

00:05:20And they're getting him involved early.
00:05:23You feel like they saw something on tape or they just have a sense with him
00:05:27because he's had a good week of practice or something in that area.
00:05:30But they want him involved.
00:05:31Just as you said, they want him to touch it either in the running game or the passing game.
00:05:35But they must like the matchups they're getting.
00:05:38We'll see what they have drawn up here.
00:05:40A little bit behind the line.

00:06:02They feel like they had to hide their valuables when they were in town.

00:06:06See if their offense can take over and get some points on the board.

00:06:24Back deep, Khalif Raymond.
00:06:31Fair catch called for right around the 11-yard line.
00:06:34So here are the Lions now backed up for their first drive.
00:06:38They'll be led out by the first overall selection of the 2016 draft.
00:06:44From Cal, it's Jared Goff.
00:06:46And at one point, the ascension of Jared Goff was really, really strong.
00:06:50Back-to-back pole bowls.
00:06:51Took his team to the Super Bowl.
00:06:53Came really within one quarter of winning it.
00:06:56But since that time, he's had bouts of inconsistency.
00:06:59And that's been the struggle for him
00:07:01as he tries to get back to the form he showed earlier in his career.
00:07:08Goff and this Lions offense set for a first and 10 at their own 12-yard line.
00:07:24On the ground, it's Swift to start the drive.
00:07:27And he'll get this to the 22.
00:07:29So they began to play at the 11, and it's a gain of 11.
00:07:32First down.
00:07:34How best to describe that one.
00:07:36I'd say right down Broadway on that run.
00:07:38A straight-ahead running.
00:07:39I think that that might be something we see a lot of between the tackles today.
00:07:43Well, he's enjoying things so far here this afternoon.
00:07:45Sees a crease and bursts through it for a solid game.
00:07:48On first down, it's gone.
00:08:11There's the former Jaguar, DJ Chark.
00:08:14And he's got it past the 30 before he's hit and dropped.
00:08:19Same exact result as last play, a pickup of 11.
00:08:23That was a nicely run slant route.
00:08:24And what the receiver's trying to do is make the defender think he's going upfield
00:08:28for a deeper route and then breaks it off,
00:08:30usually after about three to four steps,
00:08:32and cuts towards the middle of the field.
00:08:34And now what he's trying to do is use his body
00:08:36to keep the defender away from the football
00:08:38and give the quarterback a really nice target.
00:08:40Back-to-back good plays.
00:08:46Have him on the move on first down.
00:08:51Now it's gone.
00:08:53And that'll be caught by St. Brown.
00:08:56And I think this is a route we'll see more of as this game goes on
00:09:00because with his speed, they want to get him the ball in space
00:09:03on drag routes just like this.
00:09:05They want him to get the ball and run after the catch.
00:09:07Good job there, though, holding him for a short game.
00:09:11Second and seven.
00:09:18There's gone.
00:09:20Quickly to Hawkinson.
00:09:22Goal finding Hawkinson there for the line first.
00:09:26The tight end is certainly in position to go toward the chains
00:09:28because they can control space underneath.
00:09:31If they've got good hands, then, of course, they're a dynamic target.
00:09:34But one other thing is they're right in the sight lines of a quarterback
00:09:38on just about every play,
00:09:39and that makes it easier for the quarterback to pick him out and deliver.
00:09:43On first and ten at Swift, and he is going to lose yardage here.
00:10:04Officially, it's a one-yard loss.
00:10:07That's going to bring up second and 11.
00:10:09Absolutely love the effort there.
00:10:11The ability to flow from his inside spot and stop that one at the line of scrimmage.
00:10:16Nice linebacker play.

00:10:22They'll stay on the ground with Swift.
00:10:29Oh, he's got a little daylight.
00:10:31That burst good for 20 and a first down.

00:11:00Here's a first and ten at the 36.
00:11:04Goff, a handoff here to Swift.
00:11:09And the second wave of tacklers is going to get him
00:11:12as they stop him behind the line.
00:11:15Two yards, the loss, second and 12.
00:11:17Moving backwards on first down, never a good thing.
00:11:20What does that do for the mindset on second down?
00:11:22Well, it changes your play call, definitely,
00:11:24because as a play call, you're advancing yourself,
00:11:27thinking, okay, we're going to get a gain here.
00:11:28Now you've got to go back in reverse,
00:11:31come up with something to pick up not just a yardage loss,
00:11:33but gain a few extra.
00:11:41A rare misstep on that last play,
00:11:44because the drive has been strong,
00:11:45but now it's second and 12.
00:11:47From the gun, here's Swift.
00:11:54So they get half of what they needed.
00:11:56It'll be third and six upcoming.
00:11:57They've got to give kudos to offensive line and the guy carrying the ball
00:12:01because they were in a second-in-long situation.
00:12:03It seemed pretty dire,
00:12:04but they brought it back to third manageable with that run.
00:12:07Got to get to the 26th for a first.
00:12:12This is third down.
00:12:15Back to throw, golf.
00:12:17And it's going to be incomplete.
00:12:22He was able to catch it there on the right sideline.
00:12:25But out of bounds, so is the line judge.
00:12:28And it's going to bring up fourth down.
00:12:30The coverage keyed in on him since that last completion his way.
00:12:33He earned a little more attention on that route,
00:12:36and that made it a lot tougher to get a clean throw his way.
00:12:46Seibert's kick is good,
00:12:48and the Lions are going to take a 3-0 lead.
00:12:51So they're able to end that drive with three points
00:12:54in this one-possession ballgame.
00:12:56And ideally, you want to end every drive with points.
00:12:59Most quarterbacks would tell you, let's end it with a kick, right?

00:13:06Punts, you really don't want to do that.
00:13:07In this case, they'll take the field goal
00:13:09and get prepared for the rest of the game.
00:13:24Here are the Lions now as they line up and kick this one away.

00:13:39for the second time here in this game.
00:13:42The last series form, a little disappointing, forced to punt.

00:14:21Usually we see runs up this
00:14:22as the defense breaks down later in the game.
00:14:24But this guy is setting the turn harder
00:14:26and he'll drive through all types of tackles
00:14:28and put the defense back on its heels.
00:14:30So first and ten now from the 30.
00:14:52A play fake for Robinson.
00:14:57Now Lawrence.
00:14:59Looking for Jones and it's intercepted.
00:15:01Picked off by Amanio Laurier.
00:15:04And the Lions are going to take possession of the football.
00:15:08That throw Charles over the middle of the field
00:15:10and a few too many bodies in there got picked.
00:15:12That's a normal situation too, isn't it?
00:15:15No matter how hard you try and spread the field sometimes,
00:15:19there's always going to be a traffic jam,
00:15:20it feels like, towards the middle.
00:15:22And if there's any type of a missed throw
00:15:24or maybe the ball's tipped
00:15:26or just too many bodies in the area,
00:15:28an interception can result.
00:15:29Swift going to try up the middle.
00:15:56And he's going to get this inside the 30.
00:16:01It's a gain of ten for the Lions at a first down.

00:16:31The Lions with the football here to begin the second quarter.
00:16:35They had to settle for three last drive,
00:16:38hoping this second go-around ends in six.
00:16:40In good position, first and ten.
00:16:43And they're going to get this down inside the 20.
00:16:45One thing you're hoping for when you run drag routes,
00:16:49you're able to hit a receiver in stride
00:16:51and you can pick up a lot of yardage after the catch.
00:16:54But in this situation, the defense was effective,
00:16:57able to stop him before you get a good head of steam going.
00:17:05Now a play fake and it's golf.
00:17:08He's going to get this one out to his fullback.
00:17:11And he'll go out of bounds in the red zone just inside the 20.
00:17:14They'll get three as the drive continues.
00:17:17It's a first down.
00:17:19And the big guy catches the ball in the backfield.
00:17:22And oftentimes it's quite a surprise to the guys playing defense
00:17:25because not ordinarily thought as a pass catcher,
00:17:27it often works when they decide to dial it up.
00:17:29Now a first down throw.

00:17:37Over the middle.
00:17:38Hold in by...
00:17:39And he lost the football.
00:17:41And the Jags grab it.
00:17:42And a big turnover there as his guys will get the football back.
00:17:46We have seen this before.
00:17:50And we know coaches preach about this and work on it all the time.
00:17:54Catch the ball.
00:17:55You know there's going to be some traffic somewhere.
00:17:57They've got to put it away and secure it as they try and get downfield.
00:18:01And out now comes Jacksonville as they get ready to go.
00:18:05They'll take over deep in their own end after the fumble recovery
00:18:09as they start first and ten.
00:18:10Try to shake off the interception from the last drive.
00:18:34He'll look to throw.
00:18:35Completing it here to Marvin Jones.
00:18:37And that's good for a pickup of ten yards.
00:18:41And that'll leave him with a second and just a few inches left.
00:18:45As long as you go through your proper reads and progressions,
00:18:47the drag route can be one of those old, reliable plays
00:18:50because usually it's good for a good chunk of yardage as we just saw there.
00:18:54And those guys like it, right?
00:18:55They can get the ball with a full head of steam.
00:18:57Especially against man coverage
00:18:58because man coverage, they're typically running away from someone
00:19:01and not worried about traffic coming out on the other end.
00:19:04Now Lawrence.
00:19:05And his throw's going to be in completely.
00:19:08Not only did he have a chance to scan the field there,
00:19:11it felt like he had a chance to scan it twice.
00:19:13The protection was that good.
00:19:15Unfortunately for him, the coverage downfield, equally good.
00:19:22An incomplete pass on second down leads us to third at inches.
00:19:27Robinson will try to pick it up.
00:19:29And he'll have the first down as he's up to about the 18.
00:19:34A third down gain of three yards, and that'll be enough.
00:19:38So if the defense gets you the ball and they take away
00:19:40and a football recovery of their own,
00:19:42you've got to reward them, don't you?
00:19:43You've got to stay out on the field, give them a chance to rest,
00:19:46and how about doing it the way they did it,
00:19:48running the football and picking it up on third down.
00:19:50I would not have wanted to go three and out.
00:19:52They avoid that right there.
00:19:53Yeah, they avoided the glares as they went back to the bench, didn't they?
00:20:15Back to Robinson now on first down.
00:20:17And he'll fight forward maybe to the line of scrimmage, but that's all.

00:20:25Defensively, we always know that he is top of run support,
00:20:28and I think the way that he gets there
00:20:30is he understands what an offense is going to do
00:20:32before the ball's even snapped.
00:20:34A great job of scouting prior to the game,
00:20:37then reading, reacting, and taking the right path to the ball carrier.
00:20:43Rolling to his left.
00:20:45And he'll be dropped at the 36.
00:20:47It's a good game of 18 on a play that originated back at the 18.
00:20:53Got exactly what they wanted there out of the RPO
00:20:55and had the defense out of position.

00:21:42The tight ends have created so many tough matchups now.
00:21:45If you can't run with a tight end as a linebacker,
00:21:47this is going to be the result every time.

00:21:55And he'll get it out a couple yards shy of midfield at the 48.

00:24:29They say it's incomplete.
00:24:32The throw led him a little too far.

00:24:39Game speed, always different, no matter what you do in practice.
00:24:43You can't simulate it, right?
00:24:44So, your decision-making, everything has to be a little bit quicker.
00:24:48Sometimes it can throw you off until you adjust.

00:24:59And they're going to move it down the inside to 25.
00:25:06Well, they've had a great, impressive drive going here.
00:25:08And that pickup ensures the drive continues.
00:25:11And now, you continue the drive,
00:25:13which is demoralizing for the guys on the defense side of the ball right now.
00:25:17But you make your own defense happy.
00:25:19They're able to get a little more rest over on the sidelines
00:25:21while this one continues downfield.
00:25:30They show run with three tight ends here on first down.

00:25:36Oh, Lawrence forced out to his left.
