00:00In this video, I'm going to show you how to build this barnwood table.
00:03Alright, so this table is going to be made using barnwood and a plywood core.
00:07There's basically two ways that I build tables.
00:09One is just to use traditional joinery and solid wood,
00:11and the second is to use some plywood on the inside.
00:14The reason that I occasionally use plywood on the inside
00:16is plywood is a stronger material.
00:18They've taken it and stacked it and glued it and made a strong material.
00:20It's not the prettiest material, but it is strong.
00:22It's also very flat and predictable,
00:23and it expands and contracts at about one-tenth the rate of normal wood.
00:28And so I've got some two-by-sixes that we're going to madly cut
00:30and put it around the whole outside,
00:31so when you're looking at it from the outside,
00:33it looks like you've got solid bores.
00:34And I've also got some one-way wood that I'm going to mill down
00:37into barnwood veneers that are going to go on the inside,
00:41on the interior of this table.
00:43We're going to glue everything down,
00:44and we're going to leverage the strength of the plywood
00:46and the beauty of the barnwood and end up with a real nice table.
00:50So first step is we're going to take our two-by-sixes,
00:53which are going to be the outside of our table.
00:55We're going to run over the joiner.
00:56We're going to plane down the top side
00:58until I'm satisfied with the flatness
01:00and the number of characters that's revealed.
01:02We'll flip it over and we'll plane down everything
01:04so that it's all a uniform thickness,
01:05and then we can run over the table saw,
01:07cut rabbit cuts out,
01:08and start assembling this thing.
01:14Okay, so we've got all the boards at a uniform thickness.
01:17I've preserved some of the saw marks and character on the top,
01:19which is awesome.
01:21And now I want to straighten at least one edge out.
01:23As I mentioned,
01:23these are going to sit on the outside of the plywood
01:25and you're going to be able to see the outside of the board.
01:28And we're going to be cutting a rabbit cut out of this.
01:30And so now basically what I want is a really straight line
01:33that's going to be on the inside of the table
01:35and have other boards butt up against it.
01:37So I'm cutting that side out.
01:39I'm measuring back five inches from the edge of the board
01:41on both sides,
01:42setting the track in,
01:43and cutting lines straight.
01:44Pretty simple, pretty easy.
01:45Makes life a whole lot easier
01:46when you've got 90 degree angles.
01:47Okay, so the next step is here
01:52is I'm going to do this big rabbit cut
01:54for creating a void for the plywood to go into.
01:58So the first step I'm going to do
01:59is I want to leave this quarter inch veneer on the top.
02:01So I've set my saw that I can,
02:03so I can rip right up the top of that.
02:05And then I'll adjust the height and the depth.
02:10And then I'll cut that piece out
02:11and we'll get that little chunk of wood out of there.
02:14Okay.
02:17All right, so that first cut is done along there.
02:20I want to make this cut now.
02:21So I've reset the height of my saw
02:23and the distance of my saw fence
02:25to match the cut I'm trying to make.
02:29Pretty simple.
02:33Okay, so now we've gone and cut that out
02:36and our plywood's going to fit inside there real nice.
02:38And we'll butt up glue and nails on both sides
02:41and adhere to that plywood.
02:42Okay, so these rabbit cuts are done.
02:44Plywood's cut.
02:45And now the idea is that we're going to glue
02:47and nail these on top of here.
02:50So that board will wrap around the edge.
02:52This is what everybody's going to see on the outside.
02:54It looks like a solid board,
02:54but we've got this solid plywood on the inside.
02:57So glue, brad nails.
02:59We might put a little bit of clamp on it
03:01to hold this into the plywood while it dries.
03:04Okay, I don't know if we're breaking any land record speeds yet,
03:18but we're moving right along.
03:18So I've got these all around the outside now.
03:20I've got plenty of glue in there.
03:21You can even see that it's kind of poking up
03:23in some of the nail holes and everything.
03:25That's awesome.
03:26I'm going to let that glue dry.
03:27And while I'm doing that,
03:28I'm going to put these interior pieces in.
03:29So I've got a quarter inch veneer now
03:33that's going on the inside here.
03:35And so we start off with these one by sixes.
03:38I take them from there and I run them through my re-saw
03:40and I get them down to about three eight.
03:42After that, I straightened them with the track saw.
03:46And then I run them through the table saw
03:48to get the other side.
03:48So I've got nice parallel boards.
03:50Then I plane down the bottom side,
03:53just a tiny bit.
03:54And then I flip it over and skip plane it's just enough
03:57so that we still have these saw marks showing.
03:59But I've got a real uniform board.
04:01And from there,
04:02we can start cutting and fitting those in
04:04and gluing them and brad nailing them.
04:06And then we'll let this set up.
04:16Okay, we're going to let the glue dry on that tabletop
04:18and we'll start working on the base
04:19because it's a barn wood table.
04:20We want this to kind of have some beef to it.
04:22So I've got some of my old mantle cutoffs here
04:24and we're going to use those for the legs.
04:25I'm going to size them down to about a seven by seven.
04:28I'm going to use this handy dandy
04:30press cutter hooked up to a Makita saw.
04:34I love this thing.
04:34It's fun to use.
04:37The reason I like it is because
04:38obviously it's a chainsaw,
04:41but it runs off the circular saw
04:44and you get to use the plate to set your angle.
04:46So you can set a 90, you can set a 45,
04:48you can set whatever angle you want.
04:50And because it's sitting against this plate
04:52and if your beam is straight,
04:53you end up with a really nice flat cut.
04:56It's not as obvious as precise as like a circular saw
04:58or something like that because it's a chainsaw,
05:00but it gets me close enough and rough enough
05:02without having to flip my beam over on my chop saw.
05:05Or if the beam is thick enough,
05:07sometimes you have to cut,
05:08double cut the front, the top and the bottom.
05:10and then you still got to go in there with the saw.
05:12So this just chews right through like a hungry monster
05:15and we'll cut through.
05:18We'll get these about down to size.
05:19I'm going to run over to the planner,
05:20square two sides up
05:21and then we'll kind of get it down to where we want
05:23and then work on our joinery for the skirt.
05:26Okay, so I've already marked up the line
05:27where I want to cut through.
05:29As with all the tools in this video,
05:30any of the products I'm using,
05:31there will be a link in the description down below.
05:33You can actually get this Prazzy unit on Amazon.
05:37They have two sizes
05:37and they have one for worm saws as well.
05:39So my line is marked out.
05:41All I'm going to do is put this saw up on there
05:43and grab the trigger and cut through.
06:00Easier than flipping it over
06:01and you got a nice straight cut.
06:09Okay, so I've got all these beams cut down.
06:16They're square, they're nice, they're ready to go.
06:18Some of them have a little bit of character left on them.
06:20I took a lot of the character off
06:21because these are getting stained and painted anyway.
06:23So next step, I've also gone and taken some 2x4s.
06:26I've planned and joined them.
06:27I've ripped them down to the size that I want them.
06:29I'm going to put the miter joints on them
06:30and now I need to go and cut some rabbit cuts out of here.
06:34So I'm just going to place this on where it's going to go.
06:37I'm going to trace out with the pencil.
06:39Two sides.
06:41I'm just going to trace out one
06:43and this is just going to help me set up my saw
06:45and then I'm going to do all the other things the same.
06:47and then on the top here,
06:48I also am going to set it up flat against the edge.
06:57I'll trace out there
06:58and one more here.
07:01I'll show you here with the black.
07:03So I'm not going to go exactly on my line
07:05but I basically have made a line
07:09that's going to help me to cut out this area here
07:14for these to sit in
07:16and these miter joints are going to join up on them
07:18and that's going to create the main structure of our base.
07:21Okay, so we've got two basic cuts.
07:23One's going to be going vertical
07:24and one's going to come along horizontally.
07:26So what I've done is I've set my slide saw stopper
07:29right where I've got this line here
07:32right on the very edge of this side of the carbide tooth.
07:37So I'm going to hold it up against this
07:39and then I'm going to run the saw through all the way on two sides.
07:43I'll do that to all of the beams
07:47and then we'll come back and do the second cut
07:50which will take that piece out.
08:07Okay, now we've got this.
08:09So those two are cut out
08:10and now we just want to complete the cut
08:13by notching this one out.
08:14So I've set my fence back
08:16and I've made it so that I can push the block
08:20or the beam up against it
08:22and then forward and through the fence
08:24and I've set the height of my blade
08:26to come and meet up right there in that corner
08:30and then knock that piece out.
08:32There you go.
08:43Now that's just notched out perfect
08:45and then our 2x4s with these 45s
08:49can come and sit
08:51and meet up right there
08:52and we'll have a nice stop to our base.
08:55Okay, now everything's pretty much ready to go.
08:56So I'm going to go around this entire thing
08:59and glue and screw it all together.
09:01I'm going to be screwing in from the outside.
09:03I'm not too worried about those screws
09:04because I'll fill that with some filler afterwards
09:05because this whole thing is getting a stain
09:07and then getting whitewashed
09:08and then getting distressed.
09:10So basically I'm just going to start pulling these off,
09:13glue inside here, glue inside here
09:15and then start mounting them together,
09:18pre-drilling and screwing them all together
09:20and making sure everything's nice and tight
09:22and fitting good.
09:26Okay, so the base is all done.
09:31I squirt it up
09:31and we're going to let it sit there
09:32and dry for a while
09:33and now we're going to come back
09:35and work on this top.
09:36So I've already kind of come,
09:39while I was letting the glue dry,
09:40I came and put a bunch of filler
09:42in any of the deeper holes
09:44to give it kind of a chance
09:45to get in and dry
09:47and then I'm going to sand it all off right now
09:49with 150 and around the edges and everything
09:51and then we'll flood coat the entire thing
09:53and then let that one dry.
09:56Okay, that's good enough for quick sand.
10:02So Woodwise Woodpatch Filler.
10:04This stuff is actually for floors.
10:07It comes pre-mixed, it's black.
10:09I flood the entire thing
10:11and then it covers all my holes,
10:13covers all the cracks,
10:14covers all the nail holes,
10:15makes a nice smooth surface.
10:16I've already gone, like I mentioned,
10:18and pre-filled a bunch of these areas
10:19and so hopefully those will flatten out.
10:21If they do still take some more
10:22and dry down into a divot,
10:24I will top them up
10:25and flatten them off
10:26and it just really helps you get
10:27a really nice uniform finish on top.
10:32All the cracks and divots
10:35are filled with the same color type feel
10:37and it's all smooth.
10:41So I just spread it here.
10:43sloppy
10:46and go to work.
10:51I'll show you here.
10:52I just started working in like this
10:54and you're just kind of paying attention,
10:57looking,
10:58making sure that it's getting down
10:59into every crack.
11:01Sometimes I'll go with the grain
11:03and sometimes against the grain
11:05to make sure it kind of fills everything up
11:06and then you kind of get in
11:08a little bit of a pattern
11:09and just start moving it across.
11:21Okay, so this filler has been set up
11:23and now I'm going to sand it off.
11:24I've got 150 on the 6-inch Makita sander
11:26and I'm going to go along
11:28and reveal all the characters,
11:29take off the black stuff
11:30and hopefully it's all nice and smooth.
11:32We'll see if any of the deeper cracks
11:34need any more fill
11:35and if not,
11:36then we'll move on to some stain and finish.
11:43All right, we're moving right along.
11:45I ended up having to refill
11:46some of the deeper cracks.
11:47I put some more filler in,
11:48sanded them off
11:49and now it's time to put some finishing on.
11:52I'm going to use the Osmo 3166 stain.
11:55It's a Karate Kid proposition.
11:57Wax on, wax off.
11:58We'll rub through the entire thing
12:00and then we'll basically come on
12:01and wipe off the excess.
12:02goes on nice
12:02and then we can put some top coats on
12:05and then the top of this is finished.
12:14Okay, moving along.
12:15I've already put this black walnut
12:17Danish oil on the base.
12:19Now it's time for some paint.
12:21We're just going to brush it on
12:22and leave it, let it dry
12:23and then we can sand it off
12:24and make it look a little bit distressed.
12:32Okay, now I've rubbed two more layers
12:46of Osmo Matte Top Finish on this table
12:49and it is done and ready to go.
12:52So
12:53and then it's JB you go.
12:53Well, top color.
12:54Thank you.
12:55Thank you.
