00:00Fiona, do you think if Charlie's saying he hasn't got it wrong, capitalism has been blamed, perhaps, for a host of perceived problems, even if they aren't the root cause of them?
00:11I mean, young people are disgruntled by the current system.
00:15They say it's broken.
00:17But is capitalism really the root cause of all those issues?
00:21I mean, Charlie's arguing it isn't.
00:24Is that just the brush that it's being painted with?
00:27And that's why we're seeing this groundswell at the moment.
00:30Yeah, I think capitalism is the source of the problems in people's lives because fundamentally it's down to how the economy is organized, right?
00:39We agree, obviously, we live in a capitalist system where production is done on the basis of profit and not need.
00:45That is what drives capitalism forward, right?
00:48The reason that as a boss you're investing in certain things is in order for you to make a profit.
00:54You're not doing it just out of the goodness of your heart.
00:57You're looking to make profits, right?
00:59And it's that drive to profit, which means that we then live in a very unbalanced economy where, as I said earlier, you have things like the NHS, education.
01:09These really important sectors are underfunded and right now are failing because under the laws of the capitalist system, it's not useful for them to invest in that.
01:21Even though if you were thinking about it from a long term perspective for capitalism, you'd want a healthy, educated workforce.
01:28But that's a separate question.
01:29I can't talk about the logic of the capitalist class in today, in 2025, which seems to have gone out the window.
01:37But the point is this, I think young people today can see that it's the system as a whole that is the source of their problems.
01:45It's not just one boss who's particularly nasty or particularly mean, which is a good thing, I would say, that it's not about individuals.
01:53It's about the way in which this economy is organized and people want and they want an alternative to that and a radical alternative to that as well.
02:03It's very hard when your life and the life of your friends and your colleagues is getting harder and harder.
02:11Meanwhile, we can see that the life of the super rich is getting better and that you can't hide that in society, that as the rich get richer, the rest of us are getting poorer.
02:24That's a fact of life under capitalism today.
02:28And so what else would people blame their problems on?
02:31Well, I guess Charlie would say people aren't working hard enough.
02:34But I think if you work, if you're a nurse in the NHS struggling to get by because your ward doesn't have enough doctors, doesn't have enough staff, there's loads of patients coming in.
02:46The idea that you should just work harder to make your life better, I think it's an insult and not just to NHS staff.
02:53Yeah, that's not exactly what I meant.
02:55And you know that you use the term NHS a lot on the sympathy vote.
03:01You said about bosses, they make profit.
03:04As if it's a bad word.
03:06I mean, that's why you open a business for profit.
03:08And again, many people benefit from that.
03:11But, you know, of course we need more money into the NHS.
03:15But the only way you're going to get that is more capitalism, more people creating wealth, more people contributing into society, but instead of draining society.
03:26So, you know, I feel that, you know, when you talk about, you know, profits, you say as if it's a bad word.
03:34I mean, what bit of rich makes you most annoyed?
