We all remember our WFH era, the time when we actually saved money because there was no petrol, no tolls, no parking fees! Our friend recently landed a job that lets her work remotely five days a week (what a dream!), but somehow... she’s finding it harder to save.

00:00even delivery pun macam you cannot order so much because it's only a certain distance that the
00:05deliverer can yeah she wanted to but it was too expensive it is expensive i'm not buying a laptop
00:11for my company there's no way that's happening but i know there's maybe like a different kind
00:14of arrangement i feel like budgeting would be one way to just also like just coming from home
00:23i can i can actually play like two days oh i don't mind
00:34what's up guys welcome back to another episode of the money goal i have
00:38aisha with me again again aisha i'm here with more problems what do we have this time okay so this
00:45time i want to talk about whether work from home actually help you save money okay okay do people
00:50still work from home um i'm i don't think so do you work from home i don't i don't work from home so
00:56okay i have a friend who works from home actually and i feel like we've both worked from home because
01:01sure i'm pretty sure everyone has worked from home yeah mco yeah yeah remember two years of working
01:06from home okay i thought you're gonna say two years ago no it's like five years ago it's crazy it has
01:11been five years ago okay anyways two years of working from home master mco we all remember
01:16how much i feel like i was so happy because i did save a lot of money okay but that's only because
01:23i live with my mom and also i don't drive to work so i save a lot of fuel money and
01:30toll money yeah that i would usually allocate for my car like 500 ringgit and i let out the pee but i
01:36still let out the pee so at the end of the month also i have not used this money at all because you don't
01:41really drive so i feel like master mco when you were working from home maybe you do save money
01:50because you can't really go out yep so you have to cook at home save money even delivery pun
01:56you cannot order so much because it's only a certain distance that the deliverer can deliver food
02:03yeah so there's not much spending so much so my friend recently told me like okay so she got this
02:10new job so it's a fully work from home fully remote job so she feels like myself oh um i got this
02:19little salary bump and then i can go from home so in her head it's like i can save money because i
02:25don't have to drive there yeah but then she uh i went out with her last week and we were talking about
02:32her new job like how she's feeling is she happy and then she told me that she's having a hard time
02:39saving money even though she's not going out because if um so she's not driving out but also
02:47the first month that she's working from home she had to upgrade her wi-fi because she's working from
02:52home so she need a some faster yeah so she upgraded her wi-fi she upgraded her laptop and then she
03:01upgraded her she didn't get a company laptop no she didn't okay okay yeah and then she upgraded her
03:07working space so she had to buy a new table because she wasn't comfortable working because
03:12she did not she never had a setup that you know an office like an area that's comfortable
03:17i would get a standing desk i feel like if i work from home yeah she wanted to but it was too expensive
03:21it is expensive so she uh she moved like an area in her bedroom and then set made a little setup
03:28because um she had a two-year contract with the company so she knows that she's going to be working
03:33for the company for two years at home so she decide might as well can daripada like to work at the
03:39dining table she said that it's a bit hot that yeah yeah yeah yeah not sustainable long term yeah for
03:45two years i mean yeah so she decided to upgrade an area in her house so that's money and then after
03:52a whole month kan she realized that because she's working she didn't don't really have time you know
03:59to like go out grocery shopping and then masak so the fastest way for her to get food was to order
04:07delivery that's one thing and then because she's been staying at home so much that her electricity bill
04:14also naik because the aircon is on yeah throughout the day so now she's telling me that she spends
04:22actually more working from home than she does working at her office yeah so what's have you been
04:31like in this situation okay i've worked from home but my company was a lot better la i mean for one
04:36we got a company laptop i'm not buying a laptop for my company there's no way that's happening but i know
04:42this may be like a different kind of arrangement yeah maybe she has a very high salary right to
04:45compensate for that yeah maybe and i also got uh an allowance to buy stuff to set up my home office
04:51oh yeah so i think it's not i didn't ask like like does your company like can you like claim from
04:58your company yeah yeah yeah no i feel like they should okay like some companies even pay for your
05:04electricity and your really um wi-fi no okay wi-fi yeah wi-fi yeah you know yeah maybe i didn't i
05:10wouldn't know okay but i don't know does she did she know about this arrangement before she took the
05:14job um i feel like she does because he did check and ask and then she's checked up it's okay like it's
05:20fine because i want to work from home the only thing that she's hpk is like oh i'm gonna save a lot of
05:24money okay not driving and just staying at home i guess i guess if she got compensated through like a let's
05:31say pretty high salary then okay la i guess you have to invest i guess one thing that she needs
05:35to consider is a lot of the things she spent on is a one-off so it's not like everyone just
05:40to buy a new table and buy a new computer and stuff right so i guess early on you won't see the
05:45savings la but i think after a while you probably would actually i saved a lot of money during mco i
05:50don't know how okay i did i i did okay my transport was crazy la back then my transport used to be no
05:56okay why did you go hello the office at the time the office at the time okay my office at the time
06:02was 40 km one way yeah so you imagine so two ways each way each day i'm traveling 80 km that's crazy
06:09yeah so imagine the petrol that i'm paying uh the toll the toll is about i think 8 ringgit 10 ringgit a
06:14day yeah about that and then of course then because i have to service my car more often and stuff so
06:18because of that mco i really saved a lot of money la but that's me it really depends on each individual
06:24again if you stay very nearby office then you're not saving anything for me right before mco i was
06:29driving to work every day okay the traffic before mco i feel like it's different it was more jam yeah
06:36i feel like right but yeah personally for me i feel like before mco everywhere is more jam so i spend
06:42more money driving traveling to work before mco during mco i saved a lot yeah because you don't go the
06:50only thing my um the only thing i spend on relating to work is my commute la my gas my gas my petrol and
06:58my toll and then right after mco ended we kind of have an arrangement like a hybrid working after that
07:07like thursday and friday we work from home and then monday into one day so it's still okay yeah now we
07:13don't have hybrid working anymore we're working full-time in the office but we can still choose to work from
07:18home if we have events or we have shoots outside okay so it's not that bad like before pre-mco
07:25open your time la yang itu memang i can feel like i'm spending so much and commuting to work but now i
07:32feel like it's okay and i still can handle it and also if i go events or i go shoot outside i can actually
07:37claim from the company so it's not that much la so i don't spend that much so i feel like for me working
07:44from home yes i save a lot but going to work point for me is okay yeah yeah yeah actually similar for
07:51me yeah um my current job as well i have the option to work from home which i think i would save money
07:59yeah i'm actually i would because my parking each day is already 10 ringgit my toll is about five ringgit
08:04and then petrol i would say maybe like 10 ringgit a day as well so i would save money if i work from home i think
08:14you can save money working from home but i think you don't have to sort of force it
08:43right because one thing is when you work from home you are giving away the social aspect of your
08:48life correct you're not meeting colleagues you're not meeting friends and sometimes you don't even
08:51see kan siapa who you're having a meeting with for like two years kan i feel like master mco and i
08:56work fully from home i don't even know any new people coming into the company like who am i talking to
09:02yeah honestly at the time i didn't really care i thought okay this is nice this is nice but after i went back
09:07to office i realized actually it is quite important yeah yeah now you have to find this person like who
09:12is this yeah yeah so then if you work from home i would say actually it's okay if you want to spend
09:19a bit of the money to for other social activities to do whatever you want to have some human interaction
09:25yeah yeah but um for like grabs semua because she's spending more on grabs and also she doesn't have a
09:34food right yeah okay grab delivery love food delivery in general and also the electricity builder is i feel
09:41like you know if you cannot cook if you i mean you can try try to like kurangkan you punya delivery and then
09:50try and cook to save money but i feel like like electricity but is that i don't think there's a
09:55way since you're working from home kan memang you need to be in a comfortable environment yep yeah so
10:00i feel like budgeting would be one way to kind of plan you punya monthly spending and also like you've
10:10said before limit you punya delivery something that you can control kan like delivery or this you can
10:16control actually you can limit your conveniences yeah yeah you've you've talked about it exactly
10:23but again i would say this goes back to if she's already saving let's say 20 percent of her salary
10:28right and she can then afford to order grab every day i don't think it's a problem honestly i don't
10:34think that just because i work from home i need to try and save 30 percent of my salary i i think it's
10:38okay but if let's say she is struggling like despite working from home she still cannot save any money
10:43then yeah i would say something like budget la so you know you can always batch cook
10:48things i used to do that when i was in uni when i was in uk meal prep meal prep yeah you have to eat
10:53the same thing every like for three days i mean i didn't mind i'm not really a big foodie like oh i
10:58need that if you don't mind why not yeah for like during the weekend buy all your groceries meal prep
11:03that one saves money because you're using the same ingredient to cook like a lot of meals and it saves
11:07time because you just pick it up there so you have the option but i know once in a while you want to
11:11treat yourself to grab food and stuff maybe you want to order some fried chicken hot bird or something
11:16uh but yeah limit yourself maybe once twice a week depending on your budget yeah yeah and then try
11:21and eat you know oh my friend is also a snacker okay so she buys snacks kadang-kadang apa um boba
11:29delivery you know how how that goes kind of because if you're out the office whenever your kawan
11:35pergi oh do you want to grab boba yeah get boba together but for her it's just one cup and
11:39delivery yeah it's more expensive for her yeah for her maybe she should go to an office la the snacks
11:45are free you can get it from the pantry delivery free you split with your friends
11:49okay so uh we do have like a few stories that our viewers also met okay yeah they work from home also
12:01okay okay that's nice wait actually would you want to work from home given a choice now yeah i would
12:06prefer hybrid working yeah i think that's the best right i'm a very social person i feel like if i have
12:11to work five days so at home i would it would drive me up the wall i think i cannot take a remote job
12:19anymore i don't think i can take a remote job like fully work from home i can't do it yeah but i feel
12:24like the one thing about me is that i love flexibility yeah so if my office give me a flexible time
12:30and say okay i can work whenever i want like masuk at seven or balik exp as long as i complete that you
12:35know eight seven hours whatever yeah in your contract or in your two sets then it's okay i
12:41prefer yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah i just want the options i just want i just want the option so like now
12:47i have the option to work from home i never take that option i always really not even like you can
12:51just also like just come in sanjumai from home i can i can actually play like two days oh i don't
12:57mind i can go from home any day i want la but i still prefer to go to the office but at least
13:01at least i have the option to work from home if i wanted to and that's funny i think i cannot do
13:05full work from home and i will not be happy about full work from office like i feel like if they
13:10enforce it like you must come every day then oh really yeah hybrid yeah you just cannot let
13:16people tell you what to do yeah i just don't like rules okay don't tell me what to do i will decide
13:22i will decide okay sorry let's go back to the let's go back to the questions so the first story
13:26the first story uh she this person has a problem with deliveries so okay it seems that a lot of
13:31people uh watching this show have problems with deliveries huh food delivery you guys spend too
13:36much on food deliveries okay so when i first started working from home i thought i'd be saving a lot no
13:42petrol no toll no expensive coffee rents but by the end of the first month i realized i had spent even
13:47more when i was in the office boba she said more when she was in office yeah on food okay okay so boba
13:55sushi online shopping and a higher electricity bill added up quickly and the savings she said
14:01savings i imagined were nowhere to be seen the question is what's one financial habit or budgeting
14:08had you used to stop yourself from overspending on food delivery or online shopping when working from
14:13home just don't open the app yeah i think food delivery you gotta set a budget la so as we always say
14:19for any problems related to this right you have to set a budget for sort of
14:23we can call it discretionary spending meaning it's not necessary for you to order delivery of
14:29course it's necessary for you to eat but delivery you consider that as a splurge la so set a budget
14:34for yourself every month or every week and then just do that 300 ringgit is that enough no i think
14:38depends on the person la your salary is 30 50 000 a month you can put it 3 000 delivery i don't order
14:43delivery it's too expensive it's too expensive i like to go out see i told you every single one time
14:49you spend 40 ringgit yeah that's once every six months guys please don't listen to her i don't order
14:56delivery okay but on the spending i think now it's very normal because you're at home you're bored in
15:00office if you're bored what do you do you speak to your colleagues la hi hi ha ha ha at home you have
15:04nothing to do you open like shoppy oh my god so you find a hobby yeah that's your hobby that's sad right
15:09find a hobby yeah exactly exactly so find a hobby you need to make sure that there's something for
15:14you to do to entertain other than shopping other than shopping yeah take a walk take a walk
15:19take a walk yeah during lockdowns i used to like to actually just take a walk right a lot of people
15:24do that a lot of people yeah because if you work from home if you work from home you are basically
15:28cooped up in the house in your room for the whole day yeah just take a walk yeah if you want to open
15:32the shoppy app just take a walk basically to you try to i mean like you just have to control
15:39yourself yeah i feel like you have to be disciplined so if you set a budget of like okay
15:45food delivery every month 300 ringgit so make sure that you stick to 300 ringgit and then the rest of
15:49the time yeah yeah i hope anyways oh i feel like you're so good at this thing you can have heard this
15:54show though you have to be disciplined you have to be disciplined guys don't spend like no way around
16:03there okay next story the last one commute jar she called this commute jar what is that i don't
16:11know the topic is commute jar okay we'll find out okay a colleague of mine did something clever
16:16every day she worked from home she set aside 15 ringgit into a jar the money she would have spent on
16:21petrol and parking that day after she had over 3 000 saved enough for a trip or a new laptop that's
16:30when i realized savings don't happen automatically you need to be intentional about them wow that's
16:34a good idea i would do that yeah maybe so the question if you work from home how do you make
16:42sure the money you save from community commuting actually turns into real savings or investment instead
16:48of disappearing on small spends okay okay this is funny okay okay so what's the mco right can i save
16:55money a lot because i usually will transfer my duet like if 500 to that i usually spend on petrol and
17:04toll i can also in like this another savings account okay but then i go spend that money you revenge
17:09spent there i think a lot of people did that i think a lot of people did that but again i think it's
17:16completely fine like if you're saving 20 already and then this is your extra savings i mean if you
17:21want to go holiday to revenge Japan actually i think it's fine i don't think it's that bad i don't
17:27think it's that bad but i think this i mean for this poster actually her friend gave her the answer
17:32already yeah you have to be intentional with your spending set it aside into a different jar yeah and
17:36then again if this is your extra savings whether you want to use it to your retirement fund to let's say
17:43catch up or try to retire early or whatever it is or if you want to like a friend i want to go on
17:48holiday i want to buy a new laptop i think that's up to you but yeah you need to be intentional i
17:53think a lot of people that's why when they say my saving strategy is whatever's left at the end of
17:59the month that's what i will save that will never work because it's not intentional yeah because of
18:03course at the end of the month if i balance i'll just go buy something i don't like you doing oh
18:06then in the end oh shit this month i have 10 ringgit okay i guess that's what i'm saving that's
18:10why you have to be intentional that's why i always say things like save first before anything else and
18:14all these things i think once you are more like this then saving will be a lot easier and i feel like
18:20three thousand a month did you say three thousand a month at the end no three thousand after a year
18:25you know three thousand a month oh yeah three thousand a year right i feel like half to you
18:31boleh guna untuk bayar your punya insurance and road tax yeah and the other half you can maybe if you
18:37want to keep lagi untuk you punya maintenance you don't have to spend anything with your card at the
18:41end of the day yeah yeah that's true that's true yeah that's a very good idea maybe we all should try
18:45this if you work from home live every day yeah yeah okay thank you so much that was very fun thanks
18:53aisha nice talking to you again yeah hopefully your friend working from home gets to save a bit
18:58more money yeah i hope she gets better it should be her fourth fifth month now okay yeah i should
19:04demand from a company to pay for her equipment i can't be buying my own laptop that's a story for
19:09another day all right cool i hope you guys enjoy this episode and uh talk to you again next time
19:14thank you so much thank you so much see you in the next one
19:25you
