Hi, I'm Katie Dawkins. I'm an advanced PGA professional and I'm here at West Hill Golf
00:08
Club to talk to you about possibly changing your putting grip and I'm going to talk to you today
00:14
about the reverse overlap grip. So how do you hold your putter grip? A lot of people would look down
00:20
and go what do you mean how do I grip my putter? I grip it the same way I'd normally grip my clubs
00:24
by interlocking or overlapping. Now that grip is designed to help you to achieve a bit of whip
00:31
through the ball so give you a bit of handsy action in the golf swing. In putting we don't want that so
00:36
it's a really good idea to maybe look at changing this. A solid option would be the reverse overlap
00:42
grip and all we're doing here is we're taking the palms from working together with the main swing
00:47
where we would achieve a bit of a flick of the wrists to turning them away from each other
00:51
putting the club more into the palm and sitting very softly this this index finger of the top
00:58
hand over my cuticles. I tend to call this my cuticle grip when I'm coaching. It gives a lovely
01:03
soft hold on the putter. I'm in control but I can now rock from the shoulders back and through
01:09
the nice fluid action rather than giving it a bang. So what we achieve by taking the hands out of the
01:15
equation and going hands-free is a nice smooth stroke. That will really help us with distance
01:22
control. It'll help us keep the club face square and hold more putts ultimately and who doesn't
01:26
want to hold more putts. What you want to make sure of with this grip is that there's still no squeeze in
01:32
it. You're not squeezing the putter for dear life. You're letting that putter rest and then rocking
01:37
from the shoulders in a nice smooth action. You're then determining how far the putt goes by how much back and
01:44
through you give it. So the reverse overlap grip is going to really make those longer putts much easier
01:50
to control distance-wise. You'll find it smoothly rolls on the green rather than jumping and skidding
01:55
which is what tends to happen when we give it a hit. It's worth remembering as well that this grip
02:00
might not be for you. Just because your best golfing pal has started using it doesn't necessarily mean
02:05
it's going to work for you. So you need to give it a little bit of time. Get used to it but also if
02:11
your putting is really really good don't change it. Stick with it and take confidence in the fact
02:17
that you're already taking the winnings from your playing partners.
