00:00$175,000 Stolen in Virginia ATM Jackpotting Heist Police Seek Suspects
00:07Police in Fairfax County are searching for suspects after $175,000 was stolen from an
00:12ATM in a sophisticated jackpotting heist.
00:16The crime occurred at an Apple Federal Credit Union drive-thru ATM in Fair Oaks, where thieves
00:21used advanced techniques to override the machine's security system.
00:25According to Police and Fox News, jackpotting involves installing malware, or a device
00:29known as a black box, onto an ATM.
00:33This allows criminals to command the machine to dispense cash without a card or a legitimate
00:36transaction.
00:38The theft can be carried out either remotely or through direct physical access, making
00:42it difficult for banks to detect in real time.
00:45The incident began on October 3rd around 10.20pm, when an unidentified man used a key
00:50to access the ATM.
00:52The exact method of intrusion remains under investigation.
00:55Hours later, around 12.30am, the same individual returned in a blue jeep and accessed the ATM
01:01again.
01:03Surveillance footage later showed him returning with a second person, and the pair spent roughly
01:0615 minutes at the machine while recording themselves.
01:10By 2am, an unmasked suspect arrived in the jeep and began withdrawing large amounts of cash
01:15without inserting a card, holding a phone near the machine.
01:19An action consistent with jackpotting methods.
01:21He briefly left, then returned minutes later to continue the withdrawals until 2.44am.
01:27Fairfax County Police are urging the public to help identify the suspects and recover the
01:32stolen funds, noting the highly organized nature of these crimes.
01:36Jackpotting has been rising nationwide, with a 2024 case in New York involving six Venezuelan
01:43nationals accused of stealing over $400,000 from ATMs.
01:48Authorities in Georgia have also reported similar attacks on stand-alone ATMs at gas stations.
01:55Police warn that such crimes highlight growing vulnerabilities in ATM security, and the increasing
02:00sophistication of criminal groups targeting financial systems.
