Actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall and Chase Infiniti sit down with CinemaBlend to discuss their new film, Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another." We talk about PTA's best films, the potential for Oscars, what happened to their characters after the events of the film and much, much more.
00:00Here's Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the great writer, director, visionaries of our generation,
00:07doing a large-scale epic with comedy and action.
00:13We do our best and we give it up to the critics and the audience
00:17and the people that hand out awards to make those decisions.
00:20But I'll say this, it's definitely Paul's time.
00:24You know what freedom is?
00:25What?
00:26No fear.
00:30PTA's tone is so specific.
00:35So specific.
00:36It's like, how do you even describe this movie to people?
00:39Maybe you should have studied the rebellion text a little harder.
00:42We say this all the time.
00:43You know, it's interesting because I've had friends say, well, what's it about?
00:46And then when you say, it's hard, they think you're, they think you're-
00:50Being lazy.
00:51Purposefully being vague, that you don't want to tell them.
00:54And I'm like, no, it's hard to describe.
00:57They're like, all right, it's a movie.
00:58Just tell me what it's about.
00:58And you're like, I know.
01:00And then when you say what it's about, it can't convey it.
01:03So then you don't want to say it because it almost minimizes the truth of what the movie is.
01:08You just got to see it.
01:09Like, you ever see Harry that quote?
01:10You just had to be there.
01:11It's like, yeah, you just got to see it.
01:14September 26th.
01:15Because it has an energy.
01:16The film has an energy.
01:17Yeah.
01:18And it's hard to convey what something feels like.
01:20Yeah.
01:21I didn't even know how to begin describing tonally what it was.
01:24How would you describe it?
01:26I just think it's layered in every which way with like, uh, old- like, most of the movies I- when I was younger and going to the movies in the late 70s, early 80s, all- you know, this- it feels like these movies that were like an event, you know?
01:43Like, I don't know, I remember going to see The Mission, and it was like, there was a line around, and all you had was a poster, you know?
01:51And that's what- and the name, Robert De Niro, and you're going like, okay, I want to go see that.
01:57Or like a Scorsese movie, The Color of Money, you know?
01:59It's like, you have the name, you have the director, the actor, you just go and see it, and you're taken.
02:05But here- and here is the same thing.
02:06You got Paul, and you got Leo, and you got these two titans going at it and doing one hell of a picture that is going to be a lot of fun.
02:15And you got Sean Penn as well, you know?
02:17I mean, those are the names that you recognize off the bat, you know?
02:20And it's like, are you kidding me?
02:22And it is that good.
02:23I'll be seeing you very soon.
02:25Not if I see you first.
02:26Do you think if you read that script, and it wasn't a PTA script, do you think that you still would have been on board, or would you have been like, this is too bonkers, I don't know if this makes sense?
02:35I mean, I don't know if anybody else would have been able to pull off this script if it was a PTA, so I don't even think this script would even exist if it wasn't PTA.
02:43So that's a hard question to answer because, you know, it just would not exist.
02:47This script would not exist if it wasn't PTA.
02:48And if it did, it wouldn't be the same.
02:50You would just look at it and be like, this is- I don't even know what- but, you know, with Paul, you're like, got it.
02:55The second that this gaggle of journalists left the screening, you know, everyone's talking about how great it is and starts speculating about Oscars and major awards and stuff,
03:05is that exciting to you, or at this point in your careers, do you really not think about that stuff?
03:09You know, I think we just want people to see this movie in the theaters.
03:13I mean, that- it's important, you know, people are always asking about original ideas, original concepts.
03:19Here's Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the, you know, great writer, director, visionaries of our generation, doing a large-scale epic with comedy and action.
03:32And, you know, we'd make these films, we'd do our best, and we'd give it up to the critics and the audience and the people that hand out awards to make those decisions.
03:44But, I'll say this, it's definitely Paul's time.
03:48And I think, like, listen, if that thing happens, there's no control over that.
03:51If that- if it happens, great, but I'm with Leo.
03:54I hope people go to see this movie on the big screen, because if not, you're missing out.
03:59You're going to get this a lot, but do you have a favorite in his catalog?
04:02Mmm.
04:03You know what's crazy?
04:05Honestly, I think- I think- yeah, we love all his stuff, but I think he really set a new tone.
04:11Well, yeah, one battle after another.
04:13September 26th.
04:14Yeah.
04:14One battle after another, I think he really set a new tone.
04:17This is definitely one of my new favorites.
04:18I always get torn between Phantom Thread and There Will Be Blood.
04:22Ooh.
04:22And Magnolia, but I love Phantom- something about Phantom Thread was special to me.
04:26I love that movie.
04:31What's going down with Sensei's Underground Railroad right now?
04:34Like, where did that end up?
04:35And likewise, I want to know, you know, is Bob still, like, providing explosives?
04:40Is he running the pirate radio?
04:42Like, where did you guys end up?
04:44Where did our characters end up?
04:45I don't know, I think you'll be playing something, some band or something, right?
04:49You bought some stuff, like-
04:50Yeah.
04:51A block past normal, I'll go with the local band, play at the local pub, you know?
04:56Well, actually, there was one scene, I think, that was something that we shot, like, for after,
05:03there was a character that he didn't use, but I was back in the dojo teaching.
05:07Mmm.
05:08So that's official.
05:09That's good.
05:10I think I'd be there, too, right?
05:12I'd be back.
05:13And he seemed pretty blase about the whole thing.
05:15He wasn't scared.
05:16He's like, I'll handle this as it comes.
05:18Yeah, I know some people in high places.
05:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:21Yeah, I think my character's gonna continue to smoke pot and try to relate to his daughter.
05:25That's just how the cards were rolled out for me.
05:27It's not cards.
05:28You don't roll cards.
05:29It's dice.
05:30Dad, what is wrong with you?
05:32Where's Deandra at?
05:33What's she doing?
05:34I think Deandra's in prison.
05:35It doesn't look like it.
05:36Yeah, I think she got some time.
05:39Don't you?
05:40I couldn't tell, honestly.
05:42I mean, it was like a harsh interrogation, but with the tone of this movie, you don't really
05:45know her.
05:46You know what?
05:47That's the thing.
05:48She could've been bailed out.
05:49That is the thing.
05:50You never know.
05:51Like, you know, she's somewhere in Mexico, I'm somewhere somewhere.
05:55So let's back home, fighting the cause.
05:57You don't know where these three women are.
05:59Speaking of Mexico, wherever you are, what do you think her day-to-day life is like?
06:03Like, what's she doing out there?
06:04Any closure, you think?
06:05Ooh, I don't think it's any closure.
06:07She done broke some man's heart.
06:08Probably so, because, you know, Perfidia is a heartbreaker.
06:11But I also think that, per her letter, you know, I think she's doing a lot of reflecting.
06:16I think it's a lot of reflecting.
06:17I think she's sorry.
06:19And I think that, you know, I think she's just hoping for the day that it's safe enough
