00:00When I was a kid and watching movies and westerns, and I would see Native American people,
00:14they were always portrayed as the bad guy.
00:21I grew up in a time when languages were disappearing, people were ashamed.
00:27We all wanted to be the cowboys.
00:30In U.S. history, it was justified, the genocide was justified, and the fact that they wanted
00:36the land.
00:39Hollywood's impervious to whatever it doesn't want to get in its way.
00:43Marlon Brando had been nominated for an Oscar, so he asked a friend of his to come up and
00:47make a speech about the racist treatment of Hollywood towards Native people.
00:52Excuse me.
00:53He had scared the heck out of Hollywood, for a while at least.
00:56There was a lot of unrest in America.
01:02When Little Big Man came out, that was a really big deal.
01:07Indians themselves learning how to better besides just being cast because you could ride a horse
01:13nicely and you've got long hair.
01:15We've come far, you and me.
01:18You and me.
01:20It's only natural that Native people tell our own stories.
01:25It's time for us to tell our own stories.
01:27And I'm happy to see it happening in Hollywood and to be a part of it.
01:32And I wanted to tell the truth.
01:36To change the stories that were being told.
01:42But there's so much more to the story.
