00:00How many more brothers and how many more sisters?
00:02Well, this is all the brothers.
00:03All the brothers.
00:04And we have three sisters at home.
00:05Welcome to Miz Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for those familial dynasties
00:10with multiple generations of success or a strong group dynamic.
00:15We may not have come out together, but we'll always be together.
00:19Because you can't divorce your brother.
00:22Number 10. The Jonas Brothers.
00:25Ask anybody who's ever formed a band.
00:27Finding the right members can be extremely tough.
00:30And yes, inter-band dynamics don't always become easier to deal with when those members are also family.
00:44The Jonas Brothers thankfully didn't seem to have many of these problems.
00:49As evidenced by their international success, their parents were no strangers to music either.
00:54With both Denise and Paul Jonas performing within their local church.
00:58Early on, my husband and I felt like we're not just raising kids.
01:02We're raising adults.
01:04And we want to raise them with the integrity and the moral values that we have.
01:10The Jonas Brothers eventually grew to write and record secular music.
01:14However, taking the knowledge gained during childhood
01:17and applying it to careers that flourished both together
01:20and with the Jonas' respective solo careers.
01:30Number 9. The Marlies.
01:33Reggae legend Bob Marley had 12 children,
01:35many of which inherited their father's love and devotion to music.
01:39Half of the Marley clan wound up as musicians,
01:42including Damien, Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Kai Manny and Sharon.
01:48What's the quality that you saw that you said,
01:50oh, I got that from him?
01:51Oh, determination.
01:53Just drive, I would say.
01:54I don't think you got that.
01:55Some stuff's just built into the DNA.
01:58Absolutely.
01:58The career of Ziggy Marley is probably the most successful from this group,
02:02since Bob Marley's eldest son has earned eight Grammy Awards
02:06while fronting Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.
02:09How else did he inspire this book?
02:12The book, I just, the spirit, the energy, the love,
02:15the family and the togetherness that is in the book.
02:19That's coming from him.
02:20Elsewhere, Damien Marley has also won four Grammys in his own right,
02:24while Julian Marley and Stephen Marley have also succeeded
02:27as both musicians and producers,
02:30carrying on the legacy of their father into the modern day.
02:36Let me go, let me go, let me go, let me go.
02:38Number 8.
02:39The Coltrains.
02:41This space, Van Gelder's studio,
02:43what do you think of when you think of this studio?
02:45Every great jazz recording that was made in a 20 or so year span.
02:50The wonderful world of jazz can boast many famous family dynasties.
02:54These have included the Marsalis family,
02:56as well as the jazz, funk and fusion pioneers Miles and Betty Davis.
03:00The latter were notable for their husband and wife dynamic,
03:03a sentiment that's echoed here within the legacy of The Coltrains.
03:07John Coltrain was, without a doubt,
03:09one of the most influential composers and players of all time.
03:13But this also takes nothing away from the impact of his wife, Alice.
03:17You know, I accept the things that he did,
03:20and it seems to be exactly what I want to do,
03:23because there's so many things that he did in music,
03:26I would have done the same way.
03:28The Coltrains worked not only within the free, hard bop and spiritual jazz genres,
03:33but Alice Coltrain's career also incorporated bits of fusion into her work.
03:38This helped both members of this family carve their own creative paths,
03:42away from their marriage.
03:44But for me to play his music, I don't feel that I'm an extension,
03:48and I don't feel that I can contribute to anything that he did musically.
03:53Number 7.
03:53The Cash Carters.
03:54The Carter family were already country music legends
03:57by the time June Carter met her third husband, Johnny Cash.
04:01I think it stayed on the charts more than any duet album in the history of our city.
04:05You guys have done a lot for country music.
04:08This is the album, The Carter Family, available at the House of Cash.
04:10June talks a lot on it.
04:12And I hope you'll pick up a copy.
04:13The pairing of these two brought together a powerful dynasty
04:16of influential vocal, instrumental, and compositional prowess.
04:21The legacy of Johnny Cash is known to pretty much everyone these days,
04:24regardless of how well one might know country music.
04:29Yeah, we're going to Jackson.
04:33Ain't never coming back.
04:36Meanwhile, the Carter family were certified stars
04:39that paved the way for so many country gospel and folk groups
04:43that emerged in their wake.
04:45Meanwhile, June Carter Cash and her husband
04:47continued to solidify their own careers
04:50in collaboration throughout the history of their relationship.
04:53I will keep the time that binds us
04:56And I'll never let it break
04:58Cause I love you
05:00Number 6
05:02The Knowles-Carter Family
05:03The name Beyoncé is another one that needs no introduction,
05:14nor does that of Jay-Z,
05:16one of hip-hop's most influential performers.
05:18Their romantic partnership essentially brought together
05:21two titans of an industry,
05:23combining their acumen for brand marketing
05:25and performing to a heretofore unknown level of fame.
05:29That happened?
05:30Yeah.
05:31What do you mean, that happened?
05:35I was in...
05:36And four days later, you're married to Beyoncé.
05:38Sure, Beyoncé and Jay-Z were famous on their own,
05:41including the former's career alongside Kelly Rowland
05:44and Michelle Williams in Destiny's Child.
05:47Meanwhile, the career of Solange Knowles
05:49has been managed by her father, Matthew,
05:52bringing success to the younger Knowles sibling
05:54alongside her big sister.
05:55But it's like craves in the sky
06:00Number 5
06:03The Warwick Houstons
06:05There just seems to be a legacy of great voices
06:07within the Warwick Houstons.
06:09Dee Dee Warwick was a notable soul singer
06:11back in the 60s and 70s,
06:13while her cousin, Sissy Houston,
06:15also saw success as both a session performer
06:17as well as with the group,
06:20The Sweet Inspirations.
06:21You say,
06:22Mommy, we have to do something about, you know,
06:24I said, okay, went on down there
06:27and did what I had to do.
06:29Elsewhere, Dionne Warwick
06:30was a certified Grammy Award-winning legend
06:33of the same genre.
06:35Performing hits like Walk On By
06:36that thrilled legions of fans.
06:39Were you shocked?
06:40Totally.
06:41Totally.
06:42Then there's Dionne's first cousin,
06:44Whitney Houston,
06:45the daughter of Sissy
06:46who became one of,
06:47if not the voice of her generation.
06:49All told,
06:50it's an enviable dynasty of singers
06:52with some truly incredible songs
06:54under their collective belts.
06:59Number 4.
07:04The Osmonds
07:05It's somewhat of a misconception
07:07that it's only Donnie and Marie Osmond
07:09who have seen success
07:11from this famous musical family.
07:13The Osmonds were actually
07:14an incredible successful group for their day,
07:16writing and performing music
07:17that could fluctuate from bubblegum pop
07:20to a surprising turn into hard rock
07:22with the epic-sounding Crazy Horses.
07:31Meanwhile,
07:32that group's youngest sibling, Jimmy,
07:34would go on to enjoy a solo career of his own,
07:37earning both platinum and gold record awards
07:40for his efforts.
07:41Penny Lane is in my ears
07:44and in my eyes.
07:47It's admittedly Donnie and Marie
07:49that have retained the biggest public profile
07:51over the years, however,
07:53and deservedly so
07:54since the siblings' natural charm
07:56has resonated with their fans for decades.
07:59Well, look, man,
08:00it's not easy working with a dummy.
08:03Anyway,
08:04tonight,
08:05we're making television history.
08:07Right,
08:07we're the first brother and sister
08:09and dummy to host a series.
08:11Number 3.
08:12The Bach Family
08:13It isn't solely within the world
08:14of modern popular music
08:16that we can find evidence
08:17of major familial dynasties.
08:19No smiling.
08:21You really gonna miss us.
08:25I just might.
08:26The legacy of classical composer
08:29Johann Sebastian Bach,
08:31for example,
08:32was continued on
08:33via the work of not one,
08:35but four of the man's sons.
08:37The works of Wilhelm Friedemann,
08:39Carl Philipp Emanuel,
08:41Johann Christoph Friedrich
08:42and Johann Christian
08:44all contributed
08:45to classical music's progression
08:46throughout the years,
08:48while at the same time
08:49reminding generations
08:50about the importance
08:51of their father.
08:52Such splendor
08:53and wonderfulness
08:54that on its own
08:55would convince me
08:56that there was a God
08:57if I felt inclined
08:58to take that conclusion from it.
09:00Thus,
09:01it was the Bach Family
09:02that helped shape
09:02the future of classical music,
09:04directly influencing
09:05how many of us view it today.
09:13Number 2.
09:14The Gordy Family.
09:15It truly seemed
09:16as if there was nothing
09:17Barry Gordy couldn't do
09:19within the entertainment industry.
09:20He was a legendary songwriter
09:22who was responsible
09:23for composing such iconic hits
09:25as Shop Around
09:26and Money,
09:27That's What I Want.
09:28He was a manager and producer
09:30whose vision steered
09:32the sound of Motown for decades,
09:33inspiring countless
09:35creative hearts and minds.
09:36What did you see
09:37in that family
09:38and those kids,
09:39in Michael in particular,
09:40that made you feel like that?
09:40Well, Michael was,
09:41of course,
09:42he was phenomenal
09:43because he could dance
09:44like James Brown,
09:46he'd sing like Jackie Wilson.
09:47Barry Gordy's children
09:48also worked
09:49within these parameters,
09:51from Rockwell's
09:52novelty hit success
09:53with Somebody's Watching Me
09:54to Stefan Gordy,
09:56a.k.a. Redfoo,
09:57rocking parties worldwide
09:59alongside his group LMFAO.
10:01It's Redfoo
10:02with the big-ass braw,
10:03and like Bruce Leroy
10:04got the clout, yeah.
10:05There's also singer
10:06Rhonda Ross-Kendrick,
10:08whose mother was Diana Ross,
10:09and Kerry Gordy,
10:10who followed his father's footsteps
10:12into executive management.
10:14I'm not alone
10:16in case you didn't know.
10:20Before we unveil our top pick,
10:22here are a few
10:23honourable mentions.
10:24The Wilsons,
10:25The Beach Boys,
10:26Wilson Phillips,
10:27and vocal Harmony Heaven.
10:29The Zappers,
10:35Frank Zappers' genius
10:37and a complicated family dynamic.
10:39You want to hear some volume one day?
10:41The purpose of this amp
10:43is so you never have to leave the content.
10:45You can be heard in Europe, folks.
10:46It's like...
10:47The Gibb Brothers,
10:49Andy Gibb and the Bee Gees
10:51ruling the pop charts.
10:52You don't know why it's hard to pay
10:54With no one to love you,
10:57you're going their way.
10:59The Cyruses,
11:00Miley Cyrus' career
11:02outdoing her dad
11:03by a country mile.
11:04Miley was also asked
11:06if she feels that her dad
11:07was competitive with her
11:08since she surpassed him in success.
11:10With her replying,
11:11That has added a level of complexity
11:13within my family for sure.
11:14Before we continue,

11:24If you're on your phone,
11:25make sure you go into your settings
11:26and switch on notifications.
11:30Number 1.
11:31The Jacksons
11:32There is unfortunately
11:43a long history
11:44of parental meddling
11:45within the affairs
11:46of their successful children.
11:48Joseph Jackson
11:49was perhaps
11:50one of the most infamous
11:51of these controlling figures,
11:53a manager for his
11:54undeniably talented family.
11:55But do you have any regrets
11:57that you may have been
11:58a little bit too tough
11:59on some of them?
12:00Well, I'm glad I was tough.
12:04And sure,
12:04it's Michael Jackson
12:05that everybody knows the best,
12:07together with his sister Janet.
12:09But it's also important
12:10to remember
12:10just how big a deal
12:12the Jackson 5 were
12:13back in the day.
12:18Jermaine Jackson
12:21probably enjoyed
12:21the third most successful
12:23solo career
12:23out of this group,
12:24one that peaked
12:25in the early 80s
12:26while Tito Jackson's
12:28children
12:28went on to form
12:29the pop boy band
12:303T
12:31in 1994.
12:39Can you think
12:40of any other famous instances
12:41of familial nepotism
12:43in music?
12:44Let us know
12:44in the comments.
