00:00Does anybody know what we are living for?
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're looking at some iconic tracks that are heartbreaking in hindsight.
00:16Heavy, Linkin Park featuring Kiera.
00:20When the song came out, it was met with quite a bit of criticism.
00:23And I drive myself crazy, thinking everything's about me.
00:28Its radio-friendly, somber tone was a far cry from the gritty, unrestrained nu-metal the band was known for.
00:35Critics likened this change in sound to a bid for commercial success.
00:39However, fans saw the pain behind the lyrics.
00:42I know I'm not the center of the universe.
00:46You keep spinning on me just to stay.
00:49In several interviews at the time, frontman Chester Bennington opened up about the song being inspired by his own mental health struggles.
00:56In fact, the harrowing words that opened the song were a direct reflection of his mental state.
01:03I keep dragging around, what's bringing me down?
01:06After living with depression for years, Bennington took his own life a few short months after the song was released, changing the way people heard heavy forever.
01:15And it's not the only Linkin Park track on this list.
01:19Why is everything so heavy?
01:21Waiting Around to Die, Power Trip.
01:24For years, this powerful song has brought strength to people who might be in a dark place in their lives.
01:30You have made it, and something's made it, but you refuse to fight.
01:36The lyrics urge the listener to take charge of their life instead of letting it pass them by.
01:40You've got the fire in you, then show me what you've got.
01:45However, this uplifting message took on a haunting poignancy when the man singing it, Power Trip's vocalist, Riley Gale, passed away at the age of 34.
01:55His untimely death was reportedly linked to an accidental overdose.
01:59You want any power to die?
02:01How can you live with it?
02:03Despite dealing with depression himself, Gale was dedicated to making the world a better place.
02:09To this day, Waiting Around to Die remains a potent song of hope.
02:13That choice ain't up to me!
02:16You've got to fight to be free!
02:18Rock the Boat
02:19Aaliyah
02:20The princess of R&B released this song at a time when her career was skyrocketing.
02:25Aaliyah was not only an immensely successful singer, but was also making a name for herself as an actress in Hollywood.
02:35Rock the Boat was a major hit, peaking at number two on Billboard's U.S. Hot R&B Hip-Hop Songs chart
02:41and the U.S. R&B digital song sales chart.
02:46It even bagged her a Grammy nod.
02:48All that was left was a music video.
02:54Unfortunately, the day Aaliyah wrapped up filming for the MV, she got into a tragic plane crash that claimed nine lives, including her own.
03:03Although the video was released a few weeks after her passing, no one could watch it without grieving.
03:10Save the last dance for me, The Drifters
03:17Decades have passed since the world was blessed with this song, and the sheer romance of it hasn't diminished one bit.
03:24You can dance, every dance with the guy who gives you the eye to let him hold you tight
03:31Ben E. King sings of a lovely lady, who's the life of the party.
03:35She's dancing the night away, but the narrator wants her to know that her heart belongs with him.
03:40Oh, I know
03:41Oh, I know
03:41That the music's fine
03:43Like sparkling wine
03:45It was later revealed that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Doc Pommas wrote this song about his wife on the day of their wedding.
03:52His collaborator, Lou Reed, shared the story on Elvis Costello's spectacle.
03:57Pommas lived with polio, which left him unable to dance with his newlywed bride.
04:02Broadway actress, Willie Burke, who was also a dancer.
04:05But don't forget who's taking you home and in whose arms you're gonna be
04:11This gave the song a bittersweet dimension, but we love it nonetheless.
04:17So darling, say the last dance for me
04:21Every time, Britney Spears
04:24Considering everything the princess of pop has been through, fans can't help but find echoes of her pain in her discography.
04:31Notice me
04:33Take my hand
04:39In the early aughts, when her split from Justin Timberlake became tabloid fodder,
04:44she wrote Every Time alongside Annette Artani, who was also going through a painful breakup.
04:50I made money
04:51Artani was a background singer for Spears during her Dream Within a Dream tour,
04:57and told Insider that the songwriting process was cathartic, involving a lot of tears.
05:03Every time I try to fly, I fall without my wings
05:09After Spears revealed in her memoir, The Woman in Me, that she was once pregnant with JT's child,
05:15and he had allegedly asked her to terminate the pregnancy, fans speculated that every time,
05:20may have references to that experience as well.
05:22That connection is unconfirmed, but the thought still hurts.
05:27Bad Fish
05:32Sublime
05:33On May 25, 1996, at the young age of 28, Bradley Knoll left this world.
05:40When you grab ahold of me
05:43He was on tour with Sublime back then, and had reportedly abstained from substance use for a while,
05:48until he relapsed and passed away from an overdose of heroin.
05:51This makes the band's 1991 song, Bad Fish, even more heartbreaking.
05:55I swim, but I wish I'd never heard
05:59The lyrics, written by Knoll, are supposedly about someone who's struggling with substance use,
06:03but tries to drag others down the same path.
06:06It's said that the sublime frontman hadn't tried heroin before the song was released.
06:11He got no quarrels with guns
06:14His father later claimed that his desire to be larger than life pushed him to try it,
06:19which led to a substance use disorder.
06:21Knoll's music lives on, but he is dearly missed.
06:25Won't somebody get me out of this room
06:30Keep Me In Your Heart
06:31Warren Zevon
06:33It is virtually impossible to listen to this song without breaking into tears.
06:37Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
06:42The lyrics are from the perspective of someone who knows their time in the world is coming to an end.
06:47They're comforting their loved ones, hoping they hold on to their memory for at least a little while.
06:52There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
06:57Days after the song was released,
06:59Warren Zevon passed away.
07:02He had been living with a type of cancer called mesothelioma for some time,
07:06and had reportedly written,
07:08Keep Me In Your Heart after finding out his illness was terminal.
07:11Don't be in your thoughts, take me to your dreams.
07:16Fans have theorized that the song may be dedicated to Zevon's then-girlfriend, or
07:20his ex-wife, Krystal, or both, and possibly other family members he left behind.
07:27Keep Me In Your Heart for a While
07:30God John Lennon
07:32The Beatles member wrote this song as an ode to personal sovereignty.
07:36God is a concept
07:38He rejected the influences of religion and false idols like Elvis and the Beatles on his worldview,
07:44instead relying on himself and his beloved Yoko Ono.
07:48Yoko Ono
07:49Almost a decade after the song was released, John Lennon was fatally shot by Mark David Chapman.
07:55According to reports, the murderer was apparently outraged by the Grammy-winning singer's lyrics to
08:00imagine. Lennon's comment about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus, which was considered
08:06blasphemous by the Christian right, reportedly intensified Chapman's hostility toward him.
08:10I was the walrus
08:15However, it seemed the song God was particularly infuriating to him because of Lennon's lack of
08:21belief in Jesus. It's devastating to think that this anger led to the legend's death.
08:27Dream is over
08:31Johnny Cash
08:33The country star's rendition of the Nine Inch Nails song is widely considered
08:37one of the highlights of his illustrious career.
08:40I hurt myself today
08:44The music video, set in the house of Cash Museum and directed by Mark Romanek,
08:48earned him a Grammy too. The song explores themes like mortality and legacy,
08:53which are portrayed in the music video through a juxtaposition of Cash's glory days with the quiet
08:58dignity of age.
08:59What have I become?
09:03At the time, Cash was living with autonomic neuropathy, a complication related to his diabetes.
09:09But his music still captivated fans worldwide.
09:12Everyone I know goes away
09:18Unfortunately, he broke down emotionally when his wife June Carter died sometime after the cover was
09:24released. And a few months later, Cash left us too.
09:27I would find a way
09:32Hail Mary
09:33Machiavelli featuring Outlaws
09:36New York City rap legend Tupac Shakur recorded this song in July of 1996. The lyrics are charged
09:43with biblical allusions on the one hand, and violent imagery on the other.
09:47Picture paragraphs unloaded, wise words being quoted,
09:51beat the weakness in the rap game and sold it.
09:53The verses conjure a dark world where enemies are struck down and death is hardly feared,
09:58even if hell awaits. But the rapper is also seeking redemption.
10:08Tragically, on September 13, 1996, Shakur passed away, a few days after being shot.
10:18Hail Mary was released posthumously under his stage name Machiavelli as part of the Don
10:23Columinati, the Seven Day Theory album, taking on a chilling new weight.
10:29Juicy, the Notorious B.I.G. A classic tale of going from rags to riches,
10:36Juicy is a song of triumph.
10:38It was all a dream. I used to read Word Up magazine. Salt and pepper and heavy D up in the limousine.
10:44However, the Notorious B.I.G. celebration of his rise to the top after a lifetime of struggle
10:50is forever altered by what happened just under three years later.
10:55On March 9, 1997, the rapper-born Christopher Wallace was shot four times while a passenger
11:01in a car. He was pronounced dead shortly after, at age 24.
11:12In the time since his murder, Biggie has been rightfully regarded as one of the greatest rappers
11:17in history, and Juicy is arguably his signature song. But its joy is greatly impacted by what
11:24would eventually happen.
11:25And if you don't know, now you know.
11:28A Fond Farewell
11:29Elliot Smith
11:30Released posthumously after the singer-songwriter's tragic death at age 34,
11:36Elliot Smith's final album, From a Basement on the Hill, is devastating.
11:41A fine, fine, snow, black and white
11:44So took apart a picture that wasn't right
11:48Like much of Smith's catalog, it addresses substance use disorder and mental health troubles
11:54in ways as poetic as they are painful.
11:57A darling man in a living room
12:00Whose shadow paces the floor
12:03On this standout track, Smith reckons with the cost of trying to numb himself through life.
12:10But in the chorus, he stresses that his life is not actually his.
12:14This is not my life
12:17It's just a fond farewell to a friend
12:21And titling it A Fond Farewell makes it especially gut-wrenching.
12:25While he left our world more than 20 years ago,
12:29his craft and unapologetic honesty has kept him in our hearts.
12:33Fond farewell to a friend
12:38Goodbye to love
12:39The Carpenters
12:40During their time, the Carpenters were dismissed by elitists as making music
12:45that was overly sentimental and insubstantial.
12:49I'll say goodbye to love
12:53But while siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter were promoted with a wholesome,
12:57uncomplicated public image, what was happening behind the scenes was far more serious.
13:03No one ever cared if I should live or die
13:10Karen's issues with her body and eating became clear by the mid-70s, with her gaunt appearance
13:16causing concern. More than a decade before she passed, the band recorded Goodbye to Love.
13:22There are no tomorrows for this heart of mine
13:28While Karen didn't write the lyrics, her singular voice carries every word. Perhaps the most haunting
13:35moment of the song comes early when she laments about no one caring whether or not she lives.
13:41Though the song might not directly be about her struggles, it doesn't make it any less poignant.
13:47I'll say goodbye to love
13:51Dreaming of you
13:53Selena
13:54The queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla Perez's legacy has not diminished
14:00Late at night when all the world is sleeping
14:05Just two years short of her tragic death, a biopic about the artist, starring Jennifer Lopez,
14:12and made with the cooperation of her family, was released. In the film's closing moments,
14:18we hear her moving ballad, Dreaming of You.
14:20And I wish on a star, that somewhere you are
14:25This is interrupted by news of her murder at the hands of Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her
14:32fan club. The song continues playing over mourning and images of the real-life singer.
14:38I'll be dreaming of you tonight
14:43It's a conclusion all but guaranteed to make you weep. One that made this track forever an emotional one.
14:50I'll be dreaming
14:54Perfect Circle, Godspeed, Mac Miller
14:58Mac Miller's struggles with substance use disorder wasn't a topic he shied away from addressing in his music.
15:05I came for whoever is in charge
15:07Just go and get yourself a weapon and a guard
15:10In this nearly eight-minute two-parter from his 2015 album, Go OD AM,
15:15Miller talks about concerns over his well-being, including the possibility of his death via overdose.
15:22They don't want me to OD and have to talk to my mother
15:24Tell her they could've done more to help me if she'd just be crying saying that she'd do anything to have me back
15:30Sadly, that's what happened less than three years later.
15:33Beyond the foreboding lyrics, Perfect Circle,
15:36Godspeed is also a remarkable showcase of Miller's talents as an artist and performer.
15:42It's a problem, I need to wake up
15:44Before one morning I don't wake up
15:46You make your mistakes, your mistakes never make ya
15:48But knowing what was to come, it's difficult to appreciate it as a piece of music and not a cry for help
15:55Opened up my eyes, s**t, I'm finally awake, good morning
15:58Rehab, Amy Winehouse
16:01They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no
16:06Another song about an artist's struggle to fend off their demons, it was all but impossible to avoid rehab after it dropped
16:14And the more it was played, the more apparent it was that Amy Winehouse had gone through a lot
16:20Cause there's nothing, there's nothing you can teach me
16:25A soulful and endlessly catchy song about her refusal to get treatment,
16:30Rehab is a testament to Winehouse's powerhouse presence
16:34I don't ever wanna drink again
16:37That she could tackle such a complicated subject with such conviction is exactly why she became a global sensation
16:45And the song took home three Grammys, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year
16:49Though Winehouse did eventually check into a rehab facility in 2008, her challenges persisted
16:56She passed away from alcohol poisoning in 2011, at age 27
17:01It's right on the way we go, what we have, I'm oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
17:07Jeepster, T-Rex
17:09The second single released from T-Rex's second album, Jeepster captures the glam rock legends in top-notch form
17:16You're so sweet, you're so bad
17:21It's a hooky song in which frontman Mark Bolin likens himself, and the object of his affection, to vehicles
17:28If you aren't familiar with Bolin's story, it might seem like a silly novelty and not much more
17:33Despite the song's carefree vibe, Bolin feared dying in a car accident and never tried for his license as a result
17:46In 1977, Bolin was a passenger in a car driven by
17:57Raya's romantic partner, singer Gloria Jones
18:00She hit a fence post before colliding into a tree, resulting in Bolin's death at age 29
18:06Girl, I'm just a Jeepster for your life
18:11Floating in the fourth
18:12Frightened Rabbit
18:14As the frontman and primary songwriter of the Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit, Scott Hutchinson
18:20crafted lyrics so personal and evocative that listening feels like reading someone's very private diary
18:27So you just step out of the front of my house
18:31In this intense song from the band's second album, Hutchinson talks about contemplating
18:36taking his own life, with the title referring to Scotland's River Forth
18:40And the dark shower was vacuum-packed, shrink-wrapped of air
18:48Hutchinson died tragically
18:50In 2018, Hutchinson disappeared and his body was found on the banks of the Firth of Forth,
18:56an estuary that the River Forth flowed into
18:59I steer myself to jumping waves
19:03His family later confirmed he had taken his own life
19:07And this song in particular took on even heavier significance
19:15Wake me up, Avicii
19:17The lyrics and vocals from this global EDM smash come from singer Aloe Blacc, who's uncredited
19:24Feeling my way through the darkness
19:29Guided by a beaten heart
19:31But even if Swedish DJ Avicii's voice isn't heard during Wake Me Up, this 2018 death
19:37added a new layer of depth to this propulsive song
19:40I tried carrying the weight of the world
19:45But I only had two hands
19:47Black sings pleadingly to be woken up on an unspecified future date
19:52when he's older and better able to handle life's challenges
19:56Wake me up when he's all over
19:59Avicii grappled with mental health struggles, and he ended up taking his own life at 28.
20:05While listening to Wake Me Up Now may bring back memories of summer 2013,
20:11it's also a painful reminder of an incredible talent gone too soon.
20:16I didn't know I was old
20:20Whatever, Our Lady Peace
20:26There's no apparent tragedy associated with this song in the members of Canadian alt-rock outfit
20:31Our Lady Peace
20:32They'll know I'll take me back
20:37But it has still taken on some very disturbing connotations
20:41A non-album song, Whatever, was the entrance song of WWE wrestler Chris Benoit
20:47In 2007, Benoit killed his wife and son before taking his own life in one of the darkest
20:59sagas in the history of pro wrestling
21:01But whatever you need, whatever you got
21:05Our Lady Peace hadn't regularly performed the song in the years leading up to this tragedy and
21:10even claimed they'd never again perform it. Though they did bring it back into rotation for their
21:162025 tour, we can't blame anyone for not being able to handle listening to this song
21:22Blackstar
21:28David Bowie
21:30The star man himself shocked the world by announcing Blackstar, his first studio album
21:42since 2013's The Next Day. But in typical Bowie fashion, the biggest twist was yet to come.
21:49Blackstar, the album, was released on January 8th, 2016, and Bowie died on January 10th, merely two days later.
21:59How many times does an angel fall?
22:03Having kept his battle with liver cancer a secret known only to those closest to him,
22:08Blackstar's title song hits differently now that we know the circumstances of the singer's death.
22:14Pay particular attention to its cryptic, morbid lyrics, which seemingly allude to Bowie finding
22:20peace and tranquility in his final days. This calls to mind Leonard Cohen's You Want It Darker,
22:26also recorded shortly before the beloved Canadian singer-songwriter's 2016 death.
22:32I'm ready, my lord.
22:39Scared of the dark, Ty Dallassine and Lil Wayne featuring XXXTentacion.
22:45I'm not scared of the dark, I'm not running, running.
22:53Commissioned for the soundtrack to Sony Pictures' Oscar-winning Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse,
22:58Grammy winner Dwayne Lil Wayne Carter teased a special guest on Scared of the Dark,
23:03his collaboration with Ty Dallassine.
23:06I'm not scared.
23:11That guest, upon the film's release, was revealed to be late rapper XXXTentacion.
23:18Born Jace Onfroy, the controversial artist lost his life in 2018 after a botched robbery attempt.
23:25Originally intended for the Bad Baby song Trust Me, Onfroy's verse combines typical hip-hop bravado
23:31with the dark vulnerability he was known for in his lifetime.
23:35This verse, combined with the song's empowering chorus, now makes for difficult listening.
23:47I'm not gonna miss you.
23:48Glen Campbell and the Wrecking Crew
23:50Legendary country singer Campbell, who was open about his worsening Alzheimer's disease in his final
24:01years, made it clear that he wouldn't die without a fight ahead of his 2017 passing.
24:07I'm not gonna miss you is emblematic of the icon's refusal to give in, recorded for and
24:13appearing prominently in the 2014 documentary, Glen Campbell, I'll Be Me.
24:18You're never gonna see it in my eyes.
24:23Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and winning the Grammy for Best Country Song,
24:29this cinematic, John Lennon-esque ballad finds Campbell coming to terms with his impending death.
24:36The last song Campbell ever recorded, I'm Not Gonna Miss You, is a simple, gorgeous,
24:41and heartbreaking send-off to a long and storied career.
24:45I'm not gonna miss you.
24:49Grace, Jeff Buckley.
24:51And I'm not afraid, afraid to die.
24:59Some of the greatest artists of all time, like Vincent van Gogh or Buckley's fellow troubadour,
25:05Nick Drake, went underappreciated in their lifetimes.
25:09It seems fair to say that Buckley falls into this category of artists as well.
25:13I believe my time has come.
25:18Buckley once referred to the titular song from his 1994 album Grace, the only album he released
25:26during his life, as being about not feeling so bad about your own mortality when you have true love.
25:32The multi-talented musician's plainly spoken acceptance of his mortality and his seeming lack
25:37of fear or apprehension about exiting this mortal coil read very differently after his 1997 drowning,
25:44aged only 30, leaving morning listeners to wonder what could have been.
25:49Nutshell, Alice in Chains.
26:02When asked which song most reminded him of late Alice in Chains frontman Lane Staley,
26:17the band's bassist Mike Starr responded with Nutshell, citing its poetic, vulnerable lyrics
26:23as the reason.
26:24Listening to the song, it becomes obvious as to why Starr, who passed away himself in 2011,
26:31made this particular selection.
26:39This mellow grunge tune written by Staley details the singer's battle with his darkest feelings.
26:45Staley later died in 2002 following years of extreme substance use issues.
26:51It's no surprise then that Jerry Cantrell, the band's guitarist and alternate lead singer,
26:57now dedicates live performances of Nutshell to both of his fallen bandmates.
27:01If I can't be mine, I feel better there.
27:11Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
27:15Things just couldn't be the same.
27:20It must be remembered that this nearly 10-minute Southern rock epic, despite its hard-charging
27:26sound and legendary guitar solos, is, at its heart, a heart-wrenching ballad about being
27:32unable to conform to life and its expectations.
27:35Written by Alan Collins and Ronnie Van Zant, the band's guitarist and lead singer respectively,
27:50Freebird's lyrics tell the first-person story of a nomad who simply can't overcome his unchanging
27:56nature, though certainly not without regrets and reservations.
28:01While Freebird is sad enough on its own, already dedicated by the band to the late Dwayne Allman,
28:07it became a retroactive tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd band members,
28:10including singer Van Zant, who died in the 1977 plane crash that temporarily ended the band.
28:17Like a stone, Audioslave.
28:36Chris Cornell, Audioslave's lead singer, was, and still is, widely regarded by fans and critics
28:42alike as one of rock music's greatest, most iconic voices. Despite this, Cornell was reportedly haunted
28:50by struggles with oppression, drugs and drink for the majority of his life, dating back to as early
28:56as his teen years.
29:05These struggles came to an end in May 2017, when the soundguard and frontman was found lifeless
29:11following a concert in Detroit. While fans will point out that Cornell was no stranger to incorporating
29:18dark, highly personal themes into his music, Like a Stone stands out in his discography in terms of how
29:25plainly it expresses those themes.
29:36Morphine, Michael Jackson
29:48One of the King of Pop's darkest, rawest, and heaviest tunes,
29:52The Nine Inch Nails-esque Morphine finds Jackson incorporating heavy guitars and distorted drums
29:59into his sound. Fittingly enough, too, Morphine is a bitter, angry, no-holds-barred account of
30:05Jackson's feelings regarding his fame and media speculation about his controversial personal life.
30:12The song's bridge and refrain detail Jackson's resorting to drug use as a means of numbing those
30:28feelings. The singer died in 2009 of acute propofol intoxication in what was later ruled an accidental
30:35homicide by Conrad Murray, Jackson's personal doctor. Listening in retrospect allows listeners a
30:42tragically prescient glimpse into Jackson's fragile mental state.
30:46He's trying, hard to convince her, to give a moment of what he did.
30:54The show must go on, Queen.
30:58Empty spaces, what are we living for? Abandoned places.
31:05It goes without saying that Freddie Mercury was a rock star until the very end. Released just a
31:12month before Mercury's untimely death from complications of HIV-AIDS, the show must go on,
31:18and the band's characteristically bombastic style is a gloriously defiant screw you to the Grim Reaper.
31:24The song does a magnificent job of capturing Mercury's indomitable spirit and interstellar
31:42charisma. His body ravaged by the disease even then, Mercury's bandmates were initially pessimistic
31:48that he would be able to pull off the vocal gymnastics it called for. In response, the rock
31:53god downed a shot of vodka and, according to May, immediately nailed it. Who else but Freddie?

32:23Leave out all the rest. Linkin Park
32:34A staple of the early 2000s new metal scene, it can be argued that Linkin Park's success
32:39outside of that genre was due in part to lead singer Chester Bennington's soul-bearing,
32:45unflinching songwriting as well as his powerhouse vocals. Phoenix, Arizona native Bennington took his
32:51own life in July 2017, two months after Chris Cornell's death. The two were reportedly close friends.
33:04Knowing that makes it difficult, then, to listen to Leave Out All the Rest from the band's 2007 album,
33:10Minutes to Midnight, without a teary eye by the end. A plaintive, heartfelt ballad,
33:16Leave Out All the Rest implores listeners to, as hard as it can feel, remember the good times.
33:22Keep me in your memory, leave out all the rest. Can you listen to these songs without crying?
