00:00Come on, please. What am I missing?
00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down Disney and Pixar scenes that are the most shockingly realistic or simply downright grim.
00:15Beware of the spoilers ahead, as we'll be talking about some big twists from these films.
00:19You get that diamond or you'll never see daylight again!
00:25Number 50. Poison Shop, Ratatouille.
00:28To teach his son a lesson in nature, Django takes his son on a trip.
00:32The destination? A pest control shop, decorated with dead rats.
00:36Take a good long look, Remy.
00:40Now this is what happens when a rat gets a little too comfortable around humans.
00:45The moment shocks Remy and the viewer back into reality, reminding us of what happens to pests found in the kitchen.
00:51The rats hanging lifelessly by the neck is a pretty horrifying image.
00:54It's especially dark given how much the film humanizes the rodents.
00:58We look out for our own kind, Remy.
01:02When all is said and done, we're all we've got.
01:05However, Remy does prove that nature can be overcome with a bit of understanding.
01:13But we can't blame Django for being so afraid of humans.
01:16I want to make things. I want to add something to this world.
01:20You're talking like a human.
01:21Who are not as bad as you say.
01:23Oh yeah? What makes you so sure?
01:25Number 49. Pedro's Death, Encanto.
01:28Disney is not afraid of depicting familial loss.
01:31In this heartbreaking montage, we see Abuela Alma's backstory firsthand.
01:36After falling in love with Pedro Madrigal, the two get married and have children.
01:40Then tragedy strikes when the family is forced to flee their village.
01:43And though many joined us, hoping to find a new home, we could not escape the dangers.
01:52To give them a chance to survive, Pedro makes the ultimate sacrifice.
01:55We don't actually see the death, but Alma's reaction is more devastating than anything we could be shown.
02:11Her grief feels raw, unembellished, and profoundly human.
02:16In that moment, we also see the roots of her strained relationship with her children.
02:20Few Disney films portray the lasting effects of grief with such realism.
02:24And I was so afraid to lose it, that I lost sight of who our miracle was for.
02:36Number 48. Joy's Lament, Inside Out 2.
02:39Pixar is known for being accessible to both children and adults.
02:43However, this moment in particular feels like it's for older viewers, and not because it's a cheeky innuendo.
02:48When Joy fails to save Riley from anxiety, she hits her rock bottom.
02:52Joy. So, what do we do now?
03:05I don't know.
03:07She becomes so discouraged that she wonders if becoming less happy is just what happens when you get older.
03:12The thought stings because it's painfully true.
03:14Maybe this is what happens when you grow up.
03:19You feel less joy.
03:21As life gets harder, even as adults we can wrestle with self-doubt, shame, and the fear that happiness is slipping away.
03:28The film does end on a positive note, but there's no doubt that this moment stuck with viewers.
03:33Riley will never be herself if we don't get this back to headquarters.
03:37Fast.
03:38Number 47. Poor Bartholomew, The Great Mouse Detective.
03:43While it's not the most cherished Disney film, The Great Mouse Detective has some memorable moments.
03:48The peril got surprisingly dark at times, especially for a tale about talking mice.
03:53So Rattigan's a world's brightest rat.
03:56One scene specifically stands out.
04:00Rattigan executing one of his own henchmen.
04:03For the small offense of calling him a rat, poor Bartholomew is fed to Felicia, Rattigan's monstrous cat.
04:09You know what happens when someone upsets me.
04:12The punishment plays out slowly as the other minions are forced to watch him be devoured.
04:23In a twisted way, Bartholomew's drunken state might have been a small blessing.
04:27At least he was unaware of what was about to happen.
04:30To Rattigan.
04:32The world's great.
04:35Number 46. Durant Unmasks the Cygnus, The Black Hole.
04:46Though the moment doesn't last long, it's enough to give kids nightmares.
04:50While aboard the mysterious ship, The Cygnus, Dr. Alex Durant learns a horrifying truth.
04:55The ship's drones are not machines at all, but lobotomized crew members, courtesy of Dr. Hans Reinhardt.
05:01He would be dead by now.
05:04They all would be dead.
05:06It was the only way to keep them alive.
05:08It's a chilling twist that feels straight out of the Twilight Zone.
05:12Before Durant can act, the robot Maximilian brutally kills him.
05:24Following up a gruesome twist with the screams of a man being shredded to death was certainly a bold choice.
05:30If this is what passed for a PG movie back in the day,
05:33we are glad the PG-13 rating was created.
05:36You shouldn't have done that.
05:40He was a good man.
05:42Number 45. Travis Puts Down Old Yeller.
05:45Old Yeller.
05:46Even when Disney deals with heavy subjects,
05:48their stories are still full of magic and wonder.
05:51This 1957 film, however, has no such elements.
05:55Based on the novel of the same name, Old Yeller is infamous for its devastating conclusion.
05:59When the family Labrador contracts rabies, the teenage Travis decides to end his suffering.
06:13We get that 19th century America didn't have vet clinics for this kind of thing,
06:17but that doesn't make it any less disturbing.
06:19You know we've got to do it.
06:22I know, Mama.
06:24He was my daughter.
06:28I'll do it.
06:29No kid should have to use a shotgun in this manner,
06:32and the sight alone might keep children up at night.
06:35We do not recommend this for your family's next Disney marathon.
06:45Number 44.
06:46Runard's Scheme.
06:47Frozen 2.
06:48This sequel raised the stakes and set a dark path for the Snow Queen.
06:52As Elsa uncovers the source of her powers,
06:55she also finds the truth about her grandfather Runard.
06:57Once revered as a noble king,
07:00he's revealed to be a bitter tyrant who despised Northuldra,
07:03the magical tribe of Elsa and Anna's mother Iduna.
07:06Too entitled.
07:07It makes them think they can defy the will of a king.
07:12That is not what magic does.
07:13That's just your fear.
07:15Fear is what can't be trusted.
07:17To weaken them, he ordered a dam's construction in their homeland and killed their leader.
07:22This ignited an Arendelle-Northuldra conflict that would last decades.
07:25King Runard, the dam is strengthening our waters.
07:29It's hurting the forest.
07:30It's cutting off the north.
07:32Let's not discuss this here.
07:33Let's meet on the fuel.
07:35Have tea.
07:36Find a solution.
07:38Elsa learning that she came from a twisted despot was a shocking twist.
07:42Her freezing solid only moments after made for an even bleaker turn of events.
07:46Number 43.
08:01Sykes on the Tracks.
08:02Oliver and Company.
08:03This Oliver Twist adaptation presents Bill Sykes as a menacing figure.
08:07His hulking frame and cruel personality made for a convincing threat.
08:10You've got 12 hours.
08:14And Fagin.
08:18This is your last chance.
08:23His later defeat was also fittingly harsh and realistic.
08:27In the final chase through the subway tunnels, his dogs, Roscoe and DeSoto, are electrocuted on the rails.
08:33It's unsettling to see such brutality inflicted on an animal even in animation.
08:37Oh, my God!
08:45Sykes follows moments after when he collides with an oncoming train.
08:49The scene isn't bloody, but the detail of his pupils shrinking in terror just before impact leaves us with chills.
09:01Number 42.
09:03Penny's Cave Search.
09:04The Rescuers.
09:05You might expect a movie about talking critters to lean on whimsy and light-hearted gags.
09:10Yet The Rescuers delivers something darker.
09:13That little brat has escaped again!
09:16Mira, Brutus, bring her back, boys!
09:21The main characters, Bianca and Bernard, are not on a fun quest to find treasure.
09:25They're just trying to rescue Penny, a lonely orphan who was kidnapped by the sinister Madame Medusa and her hapless partner, Snoops.
09:31Kidnapping alone is a startling premise for a Disney film, but the story goes further.
09:36Penny is later forced into a flooding cave to search for a diamond.
09:40Get down there and find the big diamond or you will never see that teddy again!
09:47All right, all right.
09:49With the claustrophobic tunnels and rising waters, the sequence feels less like a family adventure and more like a child's nightmare.
09:55The water's coming in!
10:01Please pull me up!
10:03Not until you get the diamond!
10:05Number 41.
10:06Ursula's Unfortunate Souls.
10:08The Little Mermaid.
10:09You thought this classic was all about singing crabs and dancing fish?
10:12Think again.
10:14Early on, we learn that the sea witch Ursula takes pleasure in punishing clients who couldn't pay her price.
10:18So what does she do?
10:26Well, she turns them into withered polyps and puts them in her garden, of course.
10:30The little creatures adorn her lair, helplessly writhing in their new forms.
10:40Come in.
10:41Come in, my child.
10:44It's equal parts grotesque and tragic, especially when you remember that they used to be merpeople who just wanted to fulfill their dreams.
10:51The contract's legal, binding, and completely unbreakable, even for you.
10:56Nothing says Disney fun like a cave full of trapped and tortured souls.
11:00Number 40.
11:01Kronos Unveiled.
11:03The Incredibles.
11:04Syndrome may act like a Saturday morning bad guy, but beneath the banter, he is one of Pixar's darkest characters.
11:10We learn the scope of his villainy when Bob Parr, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, slips into his lair and uncovers some files.
11:17One by one, names of heroes flick by, each marked as terminated.
11:26The realization sets in for Bob.
11:28Syndrome has systematically killed dozens of superheroes.
11:32The dread of this moment hits hard as both the hero and viewer realize the scale of his plans.
11:36It's also a bitter payoff to an earlier scene when Bob quietly wondered what happened to his missing friend Gazerbeam.
11:42A long-time advocate of superhero rights is missing Gazerbeam.
11:48Bob! It's time to engage!
11:51What started off as a throwback to Golden Age heroics quickly became a spy thriller about the brutal end of an era.
12:06It's no accident that the creators of Up and Inside Out took this to existential territory.
12:18After Soul 22 finally gets a taste of life on Earth, her spark for living is crushed by self-doubt.
12:23I'm not good enough. Nope, no, nothing. I just need to fill out that last box.
12:28Joe's harsh words, joined by the voices of her past mentors, echo through her mind as she spirals into a lost soul.
12:35Sorry, isn't it?
12:36My world needs remarkable young people, and you are the least remarkable soul I've ever met.
12:41The scene captures with depressing accuracy how negativity can erode our sense of worth.
12:47It's also a stark contrast to Joe's epiphany to live life to the fullest.
12:50Kids may not fully grasp the weight of the scene, but adults certainly understand the reality of a soul struggling to find a reason to live.
13:02There's no point. You'll never find your spark.
13:05Number 38. The Wolf. Make Mine Music.
13:09This take on Peter and the Wolf starts off as a playful musical fable, but its villain turns it into something far darker.
13:15The Wolf isn't just your typical cartoon character.
13:17In fact, he borders on nightmare fuel for kids.
13:21With his sharp teeth, yellow and red eyes, and slobbering mouth, the beast radiates menace.
13:31Still not scary enough for you?
13:33Well, there's also this moment where he devours the duck Sonia in seemingly one gulp.
13:38We even see her enter the pearly gates as the characters mourn their loss.
13:51She is later revealed to have survived the encounter somehow, but the abrupt death must have scarred some younger children.
13:57It is a cruel reminder that even fairy tale danger can be just as frightening as the real thing.
14:02Number 37. Gothel Stabs Flynn. Tangled.
14:10Gothel may not be as imposing as other villains, but her cruelty knows no bounds.
14:15After escaping jail, Flynn Rider returns to Rapunzel's tower to save her.
14:19However, Gothel expects this and lays a diversion to fatally stab him from behind.
14:24His agonizing death is pretty dour despite the lack of blood.
14:36The moment gets even darker when Flynn cuts Rapunzel's magic hair,
14:39causing Gothel to rapidly age and fall out the window.
14:42She withers away so quickly that her body fully disappears before she hits the ground.
14:47For a light-hearted romantic musical, this was a pretty grim climax,
15:04even if Flynn's death was ultimately undone.
15:13Number 36. Mr. Arrow falls into a black hole.
15:16Treasure Planet.
15:18Few Disney scenes capture the horrors of outer space like this one.
15:22In Treasure Planet, the arachnid alien Scroop commits a chilling act of betrayal.
15:26As the RLS legacy careens toward a black hole,
15:29the crew scrambles to secure lifelines and save the ship.
15:38Mr. Arrow falls overboard, clinging desperately to his rope,
15:42until Scroop comes along and cuts it,
15:44sending him plummeting into the abyss.
15:46It's one of the most dreadful fates any Disney character has met.
15:57What makes it even more disturbing is that Scroop did it out of petty malice.
16:01We can only hope that Arrow's spaghettification wasn't too painful.
16:04From the very start, it is clear that Cruella de Vil is not your average Disney villain.
16:18While most baddies chase power, fortune, or revenge,
16:21Cruella's obsession is bizarrely evil.
16:23She wants to skin Dalmatian puppies to make a fur coat.
16:26Her heartlessness can be seen throughout the story.
16:36She's willing to steal, kidnap, and outright kill 99 puppies in the name of fashion.
16:45Eventually, as her plan unravels, she spirals further into madness,
16:49screaming threats and crashing cars in order to get those Dalmatians.
16:59We really cannot think of another villain as maniacal as she is.
17:07Before he became a sly con artist, Nick Wilde was just a young fox with dreams.
17:11Sadly, he learned at an early age that he'd never be treated fairly.
17:16As a kid, Nick wanted nothing more than to join the junior ranger scouts.
17:20He thought he finally achieved his dream when he was invited to initiation.
17:24I was going to be part of a pack.
17:26Ready for initiation?
17:27Yeah.
17:28Pretty much born ready.
17:30I was so proud.
17:31Instead, the troops showed their true colors and forcefully muzzled Nick for simply being a predator.
17:36The attack left deep scars, convincing him that he'd only ever be seen as a devious fox.
17:54It's a harsh illustration of prejudice and a painful reality that marginalized communities know all too well.
18:00I learned two things that day.
18:02One, I was never going to let anyone see that they got to me.
18:09And two?
18:12If the world's only going to see a fox as shifty and untrustworthy, there's no point in trying to be anything else.
18:20Number 33.
18:21Doris' Future.
18:22Meet the Robinsons.
18:24You probably recall this film's bright vision of tomorrow.
18:26For a brief moment, though, it reveals how a technological utopia can go wrong.
18:31In an effort to ruin Louis Robinson's life, Mike Yagubian, or Goob, travels back in time to change his fate.
18:38He's then betrayed by the robotic hat Doris, who reshapes the future into a grim industrial wasteland.
18:44I call them Helping Hats.
18:49You're everywhere!
18:53The once quirky Robinsons are now possessed slaves along with the rest of humanity.
18:58Although the original timeline is eventually restored, we will not forget the image of the zombified Robinson family.
19:05Seeing them robbed of their colorful personalities is downright eerie.
19:14Number 32.
19:16Jumper Rescue.
19:17The Incredibles.
19:18Early in the film, Mr. Incredible saves a man who's falling from a skyscraper.
19:22It's a quick save that ultimately had some huge ramifications.
19:26Instead of expressing gratitude, the jumper sues Mr. Incredible, claiming that he stopped him from ending his own life.
19:32Stunning turn of events.
19:33A superhero is being sued for saving someone who apparently didn't want to be saved.
19:38The lawsuit sparks a public backlash and sets the stage for forced superhero retirement.
19:43While this reveal is told in a quick newsreel, it feels alarmingly bleak.
19:48Mr. Sansweet didn't ask to be saved. Mr. Sansweet didn't want to be saved.
19:51And the injury received from Mr. Incredible's actions, so-called, causes him daily pain.
19:56I saved your life!
19:57The daring rescue didn't just go wrong.
19:59It offered a glimpse into the legal battles and dark reality of heroism.
20:02Under tremendous public pressure and the crushing financial burden of an ever-mounting series of lawsuits,
20:08the government quietly initiated the Superhero Relocation Program.
20:12The supers would be granted amnesty from responsibility for past actions.
20:16In exchange for the promise to never again resume hero work.
20:20Number 31. Redline's Interrogation. Cars 2.
20:24The sequel got mixed reception from Pixar fans.
20:27It jumped the shark with its over-the-top spy storyline, but we'll admit that we were caught off guard by this scene.
20:32When the American agent Rod Tork Redline is captured, Professor Zundap puts him through a brutal interrogation.
20:38The villain pumps Redline full of volatile fuel and slowly primes it with an EMP.
20:43The all-in-all is now heating to a boil.
20:47Dramatically expanding, causing the engine block to crack under the stress.
20:52Even for a car, the torment looks excruciating.
20:55Once Zundap extracts the information he needs, he heats the fuel to full ignition.
21:00There will be nothing to replace.
21:03How about him? Does he have it?
21:05The resulting blast is only shown in a reflection, but the implication is chilling.
21:13And far darker than anyone expected from an animated talking car movie.
21:25Number 30. Marlon's Tragedy. Finding Nemo.
21:28It's frightening how fast life can change.
21:31Marlon and Coral are excited about becoming parents to 400 children.
21:35However, a ferocious barracuda approaches, ready to make a meal of the eggs.
21:39Coral, don't! They'll be fine. Just get inside. You, right now!
21:44Coral dives to protect the nest, and Marlon is knocked unconscious by the predator.
21:48When he awakens, the only ones left are him and a single egg, Nemo.
21:53There, there, there.
21:55It's okay, Daddy's here.
21:59Daddy's got you.
22:00Since that day, Marlon swears to protect his only son from harm.
22:04He may be a little too protective, but given how his life was changed in a flash,
22:08can you really blame him?
22:09And it all happened in the opening scene, no less.
22:11I promise I will never let anything happen to you, Nemo.
22:17Number 29. The Story of the Curious Oysters.
22:20Alice in Wonderland.
22:21Have you ever wondered why your parents told you not to talk to strangers?
22:25A young family of oysters learns the hard way
22:27when they meet a seemingly friendly walrus and carpenter.
22:30Oh, uh, oysters, come and walk with us.
22:34The day is warm and bright.
22:36The walrus leads them out of their oyster bed for a fun walk along the beach.
22:40Sadly, the fun ends when he leads them to a makeshift seaside restaurant,
22:44where it turns out the oysters are the special of the day.
22:47Now, if you're ready, oysters, dear, we can begin the feed.
22:56We can't help but shudder at how the walrus devours his innocent prey without a second thought.
23:00Beyond that, he didn't even leave any for the carpenter.
23:03How despicable can you be?
23:05And this was scarcely odd because they've been eating everyone.
23:11Number 28. The Mob Song.
23:13Beauty and the Beast.
23:14To save her father, Belle reluctantly tells the villagers about the Beast.
23:18My father's not crazy and I can prove it.
23:20She insists that he's kind and means no harm, but no one will listen to her.
23:24They're more interested in Gaston's fear-mongering instead.
23:27He rallies the townsfolk into Storming Beast's castle.
23:30Oh, it's time to take some action, boys.
23:34It's time to follow me.
23:38What makes this scene really scary is the haunting melody they sing while they march through the woods.
23:46The chilling tune exposes how hate-filled its singers are.
23:49Nothing will stop them until the supposed enemy is wiped out of existence.
23:53Bring your guns, bring your knives, save your children and your boys.
23:56We'll save our village and our lives.
23:59We'll kill this.
24:01Gaston is easily the most sinister of the bunch for riling everyone up,
24:05once again painting a clear image of who the real monster is.
24:08Number 27.
24:09Rourke's End.
24:11Atlantis, The Lost Empire.
24:12While seeing the dark side of Milo's expedition team was disheartening,
24:16at least the majority of them had a change of heart near the end.
24:19Commander Rourke, on the other hand, remained rotten and greedy to the core.
24:22Well, I have to hand it to you.
24:24You're a bigger pain in the neck than I would have ever thought possible.
24:28During the final battle,
24:29Karma finally catches up to him as Milo wounds him with a shard of mystical glass.
24:33His skin slowly turns to crystal as he twists in agony.
24:37Just when you think he's had enough,
24:39he emerges as a crystal lava monster
24:41and is shoved through the ship's propellers and shredded to pieces.
24:44It might seem like overkill,
24:46but given how he terrorized Milo and the Atlanteans,
24:49we think it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
24:51Thank you, Evan.
24:53Number 26.
24:54The Evil Queen's Transformation.
24:56Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
24:58So much for the fairest one of all.
24:59Magic mirror on the board.
25:02Who now is the fairest one of all.
25:06In an effort to dispose of Snow White,
25:08the Evil Queen is willing to disguise herself as an old hag in this classically haunting scene.
25:13She gathers some creepy ingredients to craft her disguise potion
25:16and drinks the creation in one gulp.
25:18Now begin thy magic spell.
25:23The animation adds to the dark tone as each ingredient sends a shiver down our spine.
25:29The transformation is quick but eerie as her hair turns white and her skin withers with age.
25:35It's fitting how her outer appearance as a horrid witch reflects her bitter jealousy and ugly schemes.
25:40A perfect disguise.
25:43Number 25.
25:45Oogie Comes Undone.
25:46The Nightmare Before Christmas.
25:48Throughout this holiday mashup film,
25:50Oogie Boogie is a ghoulish presence.
25:52His powerful snazzy voice alone is enough to send shivers down our spines.
25:55You're joking.
25:56You're joking.
25:57I can't believe my eyes.
26:00But his demise is what sticks with us.
26:02During the final battle,
26:03Jack has had enough.
26:04He pulls on a loose thread,
26:06causing Oogie's burlap body to come undone,
26:09revealing a colony of insects underneath.
26:11Now look what you've done!
26:16Five bugs!
26:17Five bugs!
26:19Five bugs!
26:21Five bugs!
26:22The insects begin falling into the fiery pit,
26:25screeching in torment.
26:26The terror finally ends when Santa squishes the very last bug,
26:30literally stamping out the eerie hive mind.
26:32It's satisfying, but still shudder-inducing.
26:37Forgive me, Mr. Claus.
26:40I'm afraid I've made a terrible mess of your holiday.
26:42Number 24.
26:43Olivia's Abduction.
26:45The Great Mouse Detective.
26:46Everything seems normal in this scene,
26:48as Basil, Dawson, and Olivia investigate a toy store
26:51for clues about a scheme by the villainous Rattigan.
26:53Someone has taken the liberty of removing the clockwork mechanisms from these toys.
26:59But the darkness creeps in
27:00when we see a sinister figure watching them from the shadows.
27:03Rattigan's henchman Fidget gives Olivia and us a fright
27:06when he pops out and snatches the young mouse.
27:10He stuffs her into a bag
27:12and bests Basil and Dawson using the toys at his disposal.
27:16The innocent setting of the toy store
27:17makes for a creative but creepy scene.
27:20Olivia! Olivia!
27:21It's only fitting for the work of a criminal mastermind
27:27and his dastardly assistant.
27:29Number 23.
27:30Shan Yu's Message.
27:31Mulan.
27:32Shan Yu may be a villain of few words,
27:34but the ones he chooses are definitely impactful.
27:37In this scene,
27:38the Huns have invaded China
27:39and have captured two Imperial scouts.
27:42Nice work, gentlemen.
27:44You found the Hun army.
27:46Shan Yu tells the two scouts
27:47to deliver the message of his arrival,
27:49but he has one more menacing trick up his sleeve.
27:52It only takes one man to deliver a message.
27:54How many men does it take to deliver a message?
27:57His archer takes aim,
27:58and the screen cuts to black.
28:00It's not too hard to imagine what happens next,
28:03and the smash cut heightens the evil implications.
28:06This moment,
28:07along with the villain's introductory scene,
28:09cements Shan Yu's status
28:10as one of the most intimidating Disney villains of all time.
28:14Number 22.
28:15Tadashi is blown up.
28:16Big Hero 6.
28:17Disney certainly isn't shy
28:19when it comes to killing off family members,
28:21but Tadashi's death is particularly violent.
28:24After a fire breaks out at the university,
28:26Tadashi tries saving Professor Callahan
28:28by rushing into the burning building.
28:30Tadashi, no!
28:36Callahan's in there.
28:38Someone has to help.
28:39Unfortunately, the building explodes while he's inside,
28:42and the shockwave knocks Hero to the ground.
28:49The death of a close family member
28:51is already tragic and traumatic.
28:53What makes this even worse
28:54is that it happens right before Hero's very eyes.
28:58At least Tadashi went out a hero.
28:59No pun intended.
29:01Number 21.
29:02The Firebird.
29:03Fantasia 2000.
29:05This sequel came a full 60 years
29:07after the iconic original.
29:08Like 1940's Fantasia,
29:11Fantasia 2000 combines animated segments
29:13and classical music.
29:15The final segment of the movie
29:16is scored to Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird.
29:19And as the name suggests,
29:20it is absolutely terrifying.
29:22In the short,
29:30a forest sprite proceeds to a volcano
29:32and awakens some type of violent volcanic spirit,
29:36who proceeds to wreck the nearby forest.
29:38The spirit takes the form
29:39of a massive fire-breathing bird with yellow eyes
29:42before turning into a lava flow
29:44that sets fire to the forest.
29:46The visuals are haunting enough,
29:56but it's Stravinsky's music
29:57that really gives the scene its horrific tone.
30:04Number 20.
30:05The Ghost of Christmas Future.
30:07Mickey's Christmas Carol.
30:08Who are you?
30:12Are you the ghost of Christmas future?
30:14The Ghost of Christmas Future
30:16is always pretty terrifying.
30:18Disney continued the tradition
30:19with Mickey's Christmas Carol,
30:21a short animated featurette
30:22that sees beloved Disney characters
30:24acting out a Christmas carol.
30:25The Ghost of Christmas Future
30:27is portrayed by Mickey Mouse's nemesis, Pete.
30:29Pete first appears shrouded in a hood
30:31before taking it off
30:33and throwing Ebenezer into the grave.
30:35Whose lonely grave is this?
30:38A flaming coffin opens
30:50and spews fire towards Ebenezer,
30:53and Pete laughs
30:54as hellish red smoke swirls around him.
30:56It's a haunting and sinister sight
30:58for the kids who are at home
30:59watching on TV.
31:00Number 19.
31:08Hellfire.
31:09The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
31:10The 34th animated Disney movie
31:12tends to get less love
31:13than the other classics
31:14of the Disney Renaissance,
31:16but it contains
31:17one of the all-time great villain songs
31:19in Hellfire.
31:20It's sung by Judge Claude Frollo,
31:22who is fighting his lustful
31:24and obsessive feelings
31:25towards Esmeralda.
31:26Hellfire, this fire in my skin.
31:33The subject matter itself
31:34is dark and mature
31:35and reportedly made Disney executives
31:37quite nervous.
31:38It also nearly cost the movie
31:40its G rating,
31:41as the MPAA was considering a PG.
31:44He made the devil so much stronger
31:46than a man.
31:49And that's not surprising
31:50considering the hellish imagery,
31:51mature subject matter,
31:53and lyrics like...
31:54Destroy Esmeralda
31:56and let her taste
31:58the fires of hell.
31:59Number 18.
32:01The Headless Horseman.
32:02The Adventures of Ichabod
32:03and Mr. Toad.
32:04Serving as one of Disney's
32:05package films,
32:06The Adventures of Ichabod
32:07and Mr. Toad
32:08contain two individual segments,
32:10one based on
32:11The Wind in the Willows,
32:12the other on
32:13The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
32:14The story is well known
32:15for containing
32:16one of the most famous
32:17villains in literature,
32:19The Headless Horseman.
32:20Yeah!
32:21Yeah!
32:22Disney did not shy away
32:27from the character's
32:28scarier aspects,
32:29as he appears
32:30with a terrifying laugh,
32:31a horse with red eyes,
32:33a billowing purple cape,
32:35and a flaming skull.
32:36The resulting chase
32:38is the stuff of nightmares,
32:40complete with the horseman's
32:41shrieks,
32:42sword attacks,
32:42and unsettling music
32:44composed by
32:45Disney veteran
32:45Oliver Wallace.
32:46Yeah!
32:48Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
32:49Yeah!
32:49Yeah!
32:50Number 17.
32:56Facilier is dragged
32:57into the spirit world,
32:58The Princess and the Frog.
33:00Facilier is one of the
33:01more entertaining
33:02Disney villains.
33:03He's perfectly played
33:04by the always excellent
33:05Keith David,
33:06and Friends on the Other Side
33:08is a great bit of jazz pop.
33:10Facilier's villain song
33:11is later reprised
33:12when he's taken
33:13to the voodoo spirit realm.
33:14Friends!
33:16Are you ready?
33:17Oh, I'm not ready at all!
33:19In fact,
33:20I've got lots more players!
33:22I'm ready!
33:23The scene is extremely unsettling,
33:25as creepy purple-eyed spirits
33:27and shadow figures
33:28emerge to surround Facilier,
33:29who's then dragged
33:30into the glowing green mouth
33:32of a giant voodoo mask.
33:33The imagery is like something
33:34out of a surreal nightmare,
33:36and the pulsing drums
33:37add an ominous tone
33:38to the proceedings.
33:39The spirits ask Facilier
33:41if he's ready,
33:41but no one could possibly
33:43be ready for this.
33:44I promise I'll be your man!
33:46I promise!
33:51Number 16.
33:53Frollo Tries to Kill Quasimodo,
33:55The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
33:56This is certainly
33:57one of the darkest
33:58Disney films,
33:59and it opens
34:00in a deeply disturbing manner.
34:01Judge Claude Frollo,
34:03the parents of Notre Dame!
34:07Judge Claude Frollo
34:10is instantly depicted
34:11as one of the nastiest
34:12Disney villains of all time,
34:13as he kills a Romany woman
34:15and attempts to do
34:16the same to her baby
34:17by throwing it down a well.
34:22Had it not been
34:23for the intervening archdeacon,
34:25Frollo would have done it.
34:27Disney movies are often perceived
34:28as fun, light-hearted
34:29entertainment for children.
34:31The Hunchback of Notre Dame
34:32begins with cold-blooded murder
34:33on the steps of a church,
34:35creepy choral music,
34:36and trying to send
34:37a baby to hell.
34:38Frollo's words, not ours.
34:43Stop!
34:44Cried the archdeacon.
34:46This is an unholy demon.
34:48I'm sending it back to hell.
34:49Number 15.
34:50Night on Bald Mountain,
34:52Fantasia.
34:52As vicious as the fight
34:54between the T-Rex
34:55and Stegosaurus
34:55is in the Rite of Spring segment,
34:57Chernobog and his minions
34:58are on a whole other level.
35:00This one closes out Fantasia
35:02on an unsettling note.
35:06Set to Madis Mussorgsky's
35:11Night on Bald Mountain,
35:12this segment sees
35:13Chernobog and evil spirits
35:15running amok on a mountain
35:16in the middle of the night.
35:17Chernobog's mountain lair
35:19is imposing,
35:20as is his physical design,
35:22complete with a gargoyle-like
35:23appearance and yellow eyes.
35:26The floating skeletal figures
35:27are even creepier,
35:28and the scene eventually escalates
35:30into an all-out fever dream.
35:32It's artistically brilliant,
35:34but also very, very creepy.
35:35Number 14.
35:47The Horned King's Army,
35:48The Black Cauldron.
35:50This movie was the first
35:51to receive a PG rating
35:53owing to, quote,
35:54some scary images,
35:55according to the MPAA.
35:56The rating undoubtedly
36:03comes from the Horned King
36:05and his personal army
36:06known as the Cauldron-Borne.
36:08Together,
36:09they make for some of the most
36:10formidable and frightening
36:12antagonists in the Disney canon.
36:14The scene where the Horned King
36:15summons the Cauldron-Borne
36:16still sends chills down our spines.
36:19The first thing we see emerge
36:20is a wide-eyed screaming head
36:22that melts into a skull.
36:24It then turns into a green mist
36:26that raises the dead.
36:28The bump from G to PG
36:29really isn't surprising.
36:31Oh, it's horrible.
36:35My beloved warriors
36:38have come to life.
36:40Number 13.
36:41The Maleficent Dragon,
36:42Sleeping Beauty.
36:43Throughout Sleeping Beauty,
36:45Maleficent is portrayed
36:46as creepy and imposing,
36:47what with her black and purple robes,
36:49horns,
36:50yellow eyes,
36:51and green skin.
36:52But that sinister exterior
36:53is hiding something
36:54far more threatening.
36:55At the climax of the movie,
37:02Prince Philip storms the castle
37:03with the Sword of Truth
37:04and Shield of Virtue.
37:05And Maleficent turns
37:07into a massive dragon
37:08to confront him.
37:19Even watching it
37:20over a half-century later,
37:21this scene still terrifies.
37:23The prince's bewildered
37:24and frightened face
37:25says it all.
37:27Number 12.
37:27The Burnt Down Village,
37:29Mulan.
37:30Mulan contains
37:31one of the most surprising
37:32and abrupt tonal shifts
37:34in the Disney canon.
37:35As the soldiers set out,
37:37they sing the cheerful
37:38A Girl Worth Fighting For.
37:39It's quite a fun song,
37:40and it shows the soldiers
37:42at their chummiest.
37:43And just when the viewer
37:44is relaxing
37:45and enjoying the cute song,
37:46the movie throws
37:47a wicked curveball.
37:49A girl worth fighting!
37:51The characters come across
37:55the site of a massacre,
37:56complete with burnt-out buildings,
37:58raging fires,
37:59a sea of corpses,
38:00and worst of all,
38:02a cuddly doll
38:03that once belonged
38:03to a child.
38:05It is an unexpected depiction
38:06of the unimaginable
38:08horrors of war.
38:09The General.
38:14Number 11.
38:15Aurora Gets Hypnotized,
38:17Sleeping Beauty.
38:17The Maleficent dragon
38:19wasn't the only scary scene
38:20in Sleeping Beauty.
38:21Aurora is lulled
38:23into her famous sleep
38:23after being hypnotized
38:25by Maleficent
38:25and made to prick her finger
38:27on the cursed spindle.
38:33The entire sequence is eerie,
38:36with Maleficent unleashing
38:37a green light from the fireplace,
38:38which Aurora follows
38:40in a wide-eyed trance.
38:42The scene also owes a lot
38:43to the foreboding music
38:45that plays as Aurora
38:45climbs the stairs.
38:46Touch the spindle.
38:49Touch it, I say.
38:52It is a masterpiece
38:54of tension building,
38:55and it remains
38:55every bit as effective
38:56as it was in 1959.
39:01Number 10.
39:03The Furnace.
39:04Toy Story 3.
39:05Woody and the gang
39:06find themselves
39:06out of the frying pan
39:07and into the fire
39:08when they escape
39:09Sunnyside Daycare,
39:10only to find themselves
39:12at the landfill.
39:13As they slowly head
39:14towards the incinerator,
39:15they plead for Lotso
39:16to help them,
39:17only for the underhanded bear
39:18to smugly leave them to die.
39:20Where's your kid now, Sheriff?
39:23No!
39:24No, Lotso!
39:26The toys grab hold
39:27of each other's hands
39:28and await their fiery demise.
39:30After everything
39:31these toys have been through,
39:32it's both terrifying
39:33and heartbreaking
39:34to watch them
39:34just accept their fate.
39:36Thankfully,
39:36they're rescued
39:37at the last minute,
39:38and we can all breathe
39:39a sigh of relief.
39:40The fox and the hound.
39:53In this movie,
39:54based on a 1967 novel,
39:56a heartwarming friendship
39:57takes a dark turn.
39:58When Todd,
39:59a red fox,
40:00becomes best friends
40:01with Copper,
40:01a hound dog,
40:02he thinks their friendship
40:03will last forever.
40:05Unfortunately, though,
40:06Copper is a hunting dog,
40:07and when the two
40:08reach adulthood,
40:09Copper turns on him.
40:16During the chase, however,
40:18hunter Amos Slade
40:19becomes the hunted,
40:20when a massive bear
40:21with glowing red eyes attacks.
40:26What follows
40:27is a tense and scary sequence
40:29in which Copper and Todd
40:30team up to defeat
40:31the much larger predator.
40:32For young kids,
40:34this scene proved
40:34more than a little frightful.
40:37Number 8.
40:42Giant Ursula,
40:43the Little Mermaid.
40:44Basically,
40:45everything about Ursula
40:46is blood-curdling.
40:47Her octopus bottom half
40:49and gangly trapped souls
40:50are positively chilling.
40:52Her final gigantic form,
40:54however,
40:54is particularly nerve-wracking,
40:56especially the image
40:57of her massive head
40:58rising from the water.
40:59Ha ha ha ha!
41:03Giant Ursula
41:04is the stuff of nightmares,
41:06complete with accompanying
41:07lightning and thunder
41:08and the hollow,
41:10echoey voice
41:11that makes her sound demonic.
41:13And while villain demises
41:14are always quite satisfactory,
41:16Ursula's is more
41:17than a little disturbing,
41:18as she's violently impaled
41:20on a ship's bowsprit.
41:21Of all the places
41:29for the Little Mermaid
41:30to go,
41:31Kraken Ursula
41:32was a surprising
41:33turn of events.
41:34Number 7.
41:35Pink Elephants
41:36on Parade.
41:37Dumbo.
41:37Disney knew exactly
41:38what they were doing
41:39with the pink elephants.
41:40Seeing pink elephants
41:41is a euphemism
41:43for alcohol-related
41:44hallucinations
41:45used since
41:46the early 1900s.
41:47When Dumbo
41:48and Timothy
41:48get drunk on champagne,
41:50the euphemism
41:51becomes literal.
41:52And it's actually
41:53really creepy.
41:54Pink Elephants
41:55on Parade.
41:56Here they come.
41:57Hippity hopperty.
41:59They're here.
42:00And there are
42:00big elephants
42:01everywhere.
42:02Known as
42:02Pink Elephants
42:03on Parade,
42:04the scene sees
42:04Dumbo and Timothy
42:05experiencing
42:06disturbing visions,
42:07including multiplying
42:09pink elephants
42:09that play instruments,
42:11step on each other,
42:12and smash each other
42:13in giant cymbals.
42:14And that's just
42:15in the first minute.
42:16And to think,
42:17this predated
42:18the psychedelic era
42:19by 20 years.
42:20What a sight!
42:21Chase them away!
42:22Chase them away!
42:23I'm afraid!
42:25Need your aid!
42:25Peek elephants
42:26on Parade!
42:27Number 6.
42:28The Shoe Dip
42:29Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
42:31Blending live-action
42:32and hand-drawn animation,
42:33Who Framed Roger Rabbit
42:34was a monumental success,
42:36grossing $329 million
42:39and winning
42:40a Special Achievement Academy Award
42:42for its groundbreaking visuals.
42:43It also contains
42:45what is undoubtedly
42:46the scariest scene
42:47in a live-action Disney film.
42:48To frighten the toons
42:50into compliance,
42:51Judge Doom decides
42:52to make an example
42:52of a poor defenseless shoe
42:54with a concoction
42:55known as
42:55The Dip.
42:56Remember how I always thought
42:57there wasn't a way
42:58to kill a toon?
43:00Well, Doom found a way.
43:01Turpentine,
43:02acetone,
43:03benzene.
43:04He calls it The Dip.
43:05He slowly dips the shoe
43:07into the liquid,
43:08forcing audiences
43:08to watch it panic
43:09and squirm around in pain
43:11as it slowly melts to death.
43:14Needless to say,
43:14this scene is firmly ingrained
43:16in the memories
43:17of 80s kids
43:17the world over.
43:27Number 5.
43:28Hopper and the Birds
43:29A Bug's Life
43:30After years of oppression,
43:32the ant colony
43:33finally stands up to Hopper
43:34and prepares to send him
43:35flying off their hill.
43:36Happy landings, Hopper!
43:38But the plan starts
43:39to come undone
43:40as rain begins falling.
43:41The villainous Hopper
43:42confronts Flick.
43:43You think it's over?
43:45No, no, no.
43:45I can explain.
43:47But before he can cause
43:48any more harm,
43:49Hopper finds himself
43:50face to face
43:51with his worst fear,
43:52a hungry bird.
43:53The grasshopper tries to flee,
43:55but the bird snatches him up
43:56and feeds him to her chicks,
43:57finally ending
43:58his reign of terror.
43:59While we don't see him
44:09being chomped up,
44:10the ant's horrified expressions
44:11and the POV shots
44:12of him being lowered
44:13to his doom
44:14tell us all we need to know.
44:16Number 4.
44:16Clayton's Demise
44:18Tarzan
44:18As seen throughout this list,
44:20Disney isn't afraid
44:21of depicting some rather
44:22grim and violent ends.
44:24But Clayton's death
44:25in Tarzan
44:26may prove a little much
44:27owing to its eerie realism.
44:29I can use a challenge
44:30because after I get rid of you,
44:33rounding up your little ape family
44:35will be all too easy!
44:37After chopping his way
44:38through vines,
44:39Clayton falls from the treetops
44:41and accidentally hangs himself
44:42when a vine wraps itself
44:44around his neck.
44:45While viewers don't actually
44:46see the hanging itself,
44:47they do see the shadow
44:49of Clayton's dangling torso
44:50and legs,
44:51an upsetting image
44:52punctuated by thunder
44:53and lightning.
44:53Please don't!
44:59It makes for gorgeous animation,
45:06but is definitely a dark
45:07and disturbing moment
45:08that lingers in your memory.
45:10Number 3.
45:11Lampwick's Transformation
45:12Pinocchio
45:13The Pleasure Island segment
45:15of Pinocchio
45:16is incredibly twisted.
45:18It depicts children
45:19enjoying adult vices,
45:20including gambling,
45:22drinking,
45:22and smoking.
45:24They are then punished
45:25by being turned
45:26into donkeys.
45:27Oh, yeah,
45:28and the donkeys
45:28then become slaves
45:29and are sent into salt mines
45:31and the circus.
45:35Lampwick's Transformation
45:36is particularly frightening.
45:38Things begin,
45:39funnily enough,
45:40with Lampwick
45:41growing ridiculous ears
45:42and a tail.
45:42But then,
45:43things get downright horrifying,
45:45with a terrified Lampwick
45:46begging for help
45:47as he transitions
45:48into a braying donkey.
45:50The creepy music
45:51and sound effects
45:52certainly do not help.
45:53Mama!
46:01Number 2.
46:02Bambi's Mother Dies
46:03Bambi
46:03The death of Bambi's mother
46:05is still considered
46:06one of the saddest scenes
46:07in movie history,
46:09and for good reason.
46:10For many kids,
46:11the movie was their
46:12introduction to the very idea
46:13that one day
46:14they would lose their parents,
46:16or even that death
46:16was a part of life.
46:18Bambi and his mother
46:18are simply foraging for food
46:20and minding their own business
46:21when the unnamed man
46:23shows up and shoots
46:23Bambi's mother,
46:24leaving Bambi
46:26grieving and alone.
46:28We made it, Mother!
46:30Wait.
46:32Mother!
46:38Mother!
46:39It's extremely dark material
46:41for a children's movie.
46:42Your mother can't be with you anymore.

47:01Number 1.
47:02Scar Kills Mufasa
47:04Simba's father's demise
47:06takes everything
47:07that was tragic
47:08about Bambi's mother's death
47:09and multiplies it
47:10by about a million
47:11with a terrifying stampede
47:13and some cold-blooded fratricide.
47:16After the nail-biting
47:17stampede sequence,
47:18things look up
47:18when both Mufasa
47:19and Simba escape.
47:20That is,
47:21until Scar digs his claws in
47:23and pushes Mufasa
47:24to his death.
47:25Long live the king.
47:28The murder itself
47:38is tough to watch,
47:39but it's Simba's reaction
47:40to Mufasa's body
47:41that has everyone
47:42shedding tears.
47:43Dad?
47:45Dad, come on.
47:48You gotta get up.
47:51Dad,
47:52we gotta go home.
47:55It's enough to traumatize
47:56younger audience members
47:57and to have adults
47:58hitting fast-forward
48:00to skip the scene.
48:01Scar later suffers
48:02a gruesome fate
48:03when the hyenas
48:03turn on him
48:04in another surprisingly
48:05dark scene.
48:06Friends,
48:07I thought he said
48:08we were the enemy.
48:10Yeah,
48:11that's what I heard.
48:13Ed?
48:18No,
48:19let me explain.
48:21Were any of these scenes
48:22too dark for children?
48:24Let us know which moment
48:25you think crossed the line
48:26down in the comments below.
48:27Do you follow me on that?
