00:00We had a beautiful day here in San Antonio, a full house, as is always the case here with
00:10the Spurs.
00:11Welcome to the Emirates NBA Cup with coverage on Prime presented by Wingstop.
00:19The Golden State Warriors have started this season 7-6, road record of 2-6, which made
00:27the win here Wednesday, even more exciting.
00:30They start a rookie from the National Championship program at Florida in Will Richard, Butler
00:35Curry, Moses Moody, and Draymond Green, and Brett Berry, they have tinkered with that lineup.
00:42The Spurs have stuck with this group.
00:44The newest addition, though, De'Aaron Fox, he was injured.
00:47This is his fourth game back with Castle, Wembenyama, Vassell, and the San Antonio team at 8-3.
00:56And the first year full-time head coach is Mitch Johnson, who took over in midstream last
01:04season for the quarter of the head coach, Greg Popovich.
01:08And Mitch has done an unbelievable job over the summer recognizing his responsibility and
01:13the roles that he wanted these guys to play coming into this season.
01:16Interesting for Steve Kerr, made the lineup switch on Wednesday.
01:20Kaminga and Podzemski out of the lineup and trying to get some more flow into this offense
01:25with Will Richard, who's been an incredibly pleasant surprise for Golden State, alongside
01:30Moses Moody, who has played very consistent, Kevin, so far for the Warriors this season
01:35as a 3-and-D wing player.
01:37He's a big fan of Moody.
01:38You just saw Steve Kerr.
01:40And there's a look at Steph Curry, averaging 27 points a game this season.
01:45Last year, 24 a game.
01:49Our officials, our crew chief is Mark Davis, our referee, Brian Forte.
01:53Our umpire, Brandon Schwab, in the replay center.
01:56Brett Barneke, Zach Sarba, Jonathan Sterling.
02:00Brandon Barneke, inside, and a six for two going in.
02:05It's Deion Fox.
02:06Golden State, the 21st team, and scoring.
02:10Good pass.
02:10Curry, Richard, back out.
02:12Around the horn.
02:13Five to fire.
02:14Green inside.
02:15Richard will finish it off for Golden State.
02:19Saves it.
02:20Starting again tonight.
02:21Outside Fox.
02:23And he's free to fire from three.
02:25And when Benyama comes out on him, the stabilizing factor, Kerr gushing about Butler as Green gets it off to Curry and Fox is on him.
02:36Green screen, switch, three, good.
02:44San Antonio is in the top eight in rating on offense and defense.
02:49Good feet, catch on the drive.
02:52What a pass to set him up.
02:53And finding his way right to the rim.
02:57Curry doubled.
02:58Green on the fly.
02:59It's picked up by Butler.
03:01Green again.
03:02The floater will fall that time.
03:06Green the rebound.
03:07Touch pass to Curry.
03:08Leading the break.
03:09No one pass.
03:10Out of the way.
03:11Richard will finish.
03:12Break, break by Golden State.
03:14One-on-one with Curry.
03:17Trying to generate for two and he gets it to go.
03:19And Antonio, the first home loss of the season to the Warriors Wednesday.
03:27Castleby dropped away by Hartford.
03:28Another block for him.
03:32Golden State came limping into here after getting crushed in Oklahoma City.
03:36One Wednesday.
03:37Coming out on fire tonight.
03:39Here comes Curry.
03:40Two-point shot rattles in.
03:42Curry.
03:43Seven.
03:44Curry.
03:45See how many times the Warriors involved Cornette in this screen so that Steph can come on and manipulate just like that.
03:54What a stroke.
03:55A hundred players that have come through these doors of the San Antonio Spurs that would tell you the same thing.
04:00The stories are great.
04:01Knock away inside.
04:03Tear and Fox in front of Progetti.
04:06At the other end, they swing it around.
04:08Remy on at three.
04:10Three.
04:10Healed and Wimbanyama.
04:15Thriding knocked away inside with the defense.
04:19Nice swipe.
04:21And Fox the other way.
04:23Came in a trade with Sacramento inside.
04:25Tries the deal.
04:26Doubled and downed.
04:28And was coached under him.
04:30Wimbanyama.
04:32Healed.
04:33The defense.
04:33Whether Moses moving to Benz and the beautiful shot will drop.
04:37And they really do try to take advantage of the transition of Victor being in the paint.
04:42It's one of the rare times he's got both feet in there.
04:44Harrison Barnes three.
04:48Try to earn those minutes back.
04:49You're going to come off the bench and change your mentality.
04:52Remy on at three.
04:54It's a three.
04:56Jimmy Butler.
04:58So hand defending with Wimbanyama.
05:00Remy on at the way by Wimbanyama.
05:02No patient and waiting.
05:04And after that ball goes up, no problem for Victor that time.
05:07On the Draymond green shot.
05:09Jimmy Butler.
05:14Butler in his 15th season.
05:18Green is green.
05:19Pumps to three.
05:20Bull time.
05:20Well, we've had an interesting game because Golden State is three of 16 shooting threes.
05:28San Antonio for a 13.
05:29There's a three right out of my mouth and right through the twine by Curry.
05:34It's off to Curry.
05:35Over 4,000 threes he's made in the regular season.

06:06But a nice shot from outside right there.
06:08Burying another shot.
06:093, 2, 3, 2, 1.
06:12Pajunstin.
06:13Closed cornered.
06:15It still drops.
06:16It's a three for Pajunstin.
06:19And the Warriors getting Jimmy Butler involved.
06:21Trying to get him to that low close so they can play on the weak side.
06:24Castle.
06:26With the hesitation in two.
06:28Sturgeon Johnson checks in for Cornett.

07:11Butler off the floor.
07:12And Jimmy getting to the middle.
07:15He was on the rise and let that shot go.
07:17He knew Victor was tracking that one.
07:19Great touch from Jimmy Butler inside.
07:21Spurs are shooting.
07:2520%.

07:48Fox 3.
07:49He's got to stay close to the finals.
07:55Nice match.
07:56Curry.
07:56Green can't finish.
07:57His shot is just not going 1-7.
08:06Rembenyama shot by Green.

16:22No, Golden State.
16:24Has gotten another win in San Antonio.
16:30And Curry has led the way with 49.
16:34Steph, how would you describe this emotion that we're seeing from you?
16:38I love this game.
16:41I love my teammates.
16:43I thank God every day I get these opportunities to keep playing and enjoy these type of moments.
16:49Like, it's only game, what, 14?
16:51We're just trying to claw our way into some type of identity and momentum.
16:57But that was fun.
16:59They got a great team.
17:00To come in and win back-to-back games is huge.
17:02For you, back-to-back 40-point games.
17:04You got six of those in your career, but it's your first since 2022.
17:08What did this one in particularly take from you?
17:11Just kind of digging deeper, reminding myself to have fun.
17:15Like, the competition and understanding how the game can kind of ebb and flow.
17:21Just the next shot, just keep shooting.
17:23Keep trying to make the right play.
17:25But Gary Payton coming in, knocking down those two threes.
17:28Al Horford playing great defense.
17:30BP taking that charge.
17:32Jimmy finished at the basket.
17:33Draymond, you know, reading, reacting.
17:36Like, we all did it together.
17:37I know the points looked great, but we all did it together to win.
17:40That's what we're trying to build on.
17:42Steph, after the night you guys had in OKC to 72 hours later,
17:45putting together these back-to-back performances,
17:48what does it say about what this group is capable of?
17:52That's why I know we get a lot of attention,
17:55and we have our own expectations in our locker room
17:57that we can still win at a high level.
17:59That's all it is.
18:00We're just trying to live up to that.
18:02It's a long year.
18:03There's a lot of emotion, a lot of ups and downs.
18:04We're just trying to, like I said, just come out and find an identity.
18:09We haven't been able to do that early in the season,
18:12but these are two gritty, gutsy, professional wins.
18:16Appreciate the time, Steph.
18:17Congrats on the win.
18:17Appreciate you.
18:18Kevin.
18:24No, I know.
18:25Different, different situation.
18:29I know Coach mentioned it before the game,
18:31but being from the Bay and understanding an icon that was lost,
18:39John Beam, like, sending all of Dawson's prayers to his family,
18:43the whole Laney College community, all of Oakland.
18:47Since this violence is tough,
18:50it's in perspective what we get to do every day,
18:52but I know he was a legend and touched a lot of lives,
18:55so I just want to acknowledge that.
18:58Did you ever get to meet John Beam?
18:59I did not.
19:01You noticed Wimby finding the crowd up before your free throw?
19:06Absolutely.
19:09Do you like when something like that?
19:12It just keeps you engaged.
19:13Like, I'm aware of everything.
19:14It's pretty fun.
19:17I ain't really, I don't think I told,
19:20I like the free throw at the end of the game.
19:21Like, you got to find something to take the nerves out,
19:23and for me, like, that's just embracing the moment and smiling,
19:26having a good time.
19:27And when he started that, especially with their fan,
19:32whatever, the fanatics that they got up there in the stands right behind the basket,
19:36I kind of wanted to acknowledge it and not let it surprise me,
19:38so I played into it.
19:40Thankfully, I made them.
19:42Do you feel like the playoff game tonight?
19:43Yes and no.
19:45I mean, having played them back-to-back games and subtle adjustments,
19:48that is always fun to try to figure out on the fly.
19:53Like, they were pretty fast and physical in the first half,
19:56and, you know, shots were a little hard to come by.
19:59But then we kind of settled into it,
20:02and to your point about just the intensity,
20:06the end-season tournament thing,
20:07it's working in a sense of giving you an atmosphere
20:10and something that feels a little different
20:12than just a normal regular season game.
20:16Guys really want to get to Vegas.
20:18How aware were you of tying Michael Jordan
20:21for 40-point games at your age?
20:23Very aware.
20:24I threw up the, yeah, I did it backwards, though.
20:28Yeah, it's the second time I've done that.
20:31But, yeah, I was aware of it for sure.
20:32It's something just I didn't know about it going one way
20:37until last game, and then obviously I was asked about it.
20:39And then when I got over that number, like, that's pretty cool,
20:43just from an individual accomplishment perspective,
20:47just to be able to be in that type of company.
20:49The longevity is something I pride myself on,
20:52so that was pretty cool.
20:53I'm a free agent.
21:00I'm out here.
21:01There's new beginnings.
21:03I was, you know, blessed to have an unbelievable experience
21:06and take a chance on something that meant a lot to me
21:09over the last 13 years
21:10and extremely proud of what I, you know, myself, my team,
21:15everybody who was able to touch that business for that long.
21:18And we all should be proud of what we were able to accomplish
21:21and taking a basketball brand or brand and category
21:26that wasn't really a thing before to where we did.
21:30But I'm excited about the future.
21:34Why did that partnership end now?
21:36Why did that partnership with Under Armour end now?
21:42Just in the best interest of both parties.
21:44You know, the sneaker industry is difficult,
21:48and like I said, you know, things change over time
21:52and to the point of you give your best effort
21:55to, you know, create something sustainable
21:58and, you know, a little disappointing knowing how it turned out
22:02based on, you know, where Curry brand has been
22:05the last five years
22:06and the announcement we had two years ago,
22:09but I think it's the right thing for everybody.
22:11Man, for me to be able to take the opportunity
22:19with Curry brand and what we've done in the community,
22:21what we've done from standing for something,
22:24you know, changing the game for good is our tagline
22:26and hopefully having something to show for it down the road.
22:29I'm excited about that.
22:30Steph, why did you choose to wear the Mamba Seedas pregame?
22:35Uh, I think it's, well, one, I know it's just weird
22:43seeming anything else other than my own shoes,
22:46but just the idea of what he meant.
22:49I've talked about Kobe a lot,
22:51and that specific pair, I think it speaks for itself
22:56what it means.
22:56And other than that, it's just something that I wanted
23:01to take, you know, advantage of that moment
23:04and, you know, pay tribute.
23:07And, uh, I think it gave me some good energy tonight.
23:11Will you be sticking with those shoes
23:12or testing out different companies pregame?
23:14Like, how will that work?
23:16I mean, the good thing about this situation
23:18is I love my own shoes when I'm out there hooping.
23:22Like, that's why I put those back on
23:23and why I've designed, you know, the kicks I have
23:26for as long as I have.
23:28Um, but, yeah, I'm going to have some fun with this.
23:30And, like you said, or, like, the question is
23:34in terms of being open to whatever opportunity
23:37is the right fit, but I'm going to try everything out.
23:40Back to the game.
23:41How much do you guys thrive when Draymond's
23:44in that kind of intention, the intensity that he had
23:47with Wemmy tonight?
23:49I mean, he takes those challenges on.
23:51And the idea of, he's not afraid of any moment
23:56or any, you know, anybody on the other side.
24:00And we know, like, Wemmy's going to get his numbers.
24:03He's going to have his moments.
24:04He's an unbelievable player.
24:06But over the course of the game, you're going to make him work.
24:09And you're going to feel him.
24:10And I told him, like, you remind people who you are.
24:13It's not about anything other than, you know,
24:16making your presence felt.
24:17And he did exactly that.
24:18And thankfully, we were able to make enough plays
24:21on the stretch where it mattered.
24:23So that's why Draymond is who he is.
24:26He plays way above his size, and he has his whole career.
24:30And you can ride with that type of energy any night.
24:33How much does it fire up the team to see Steve Kerr
24:36get a tech there in the third floor?
24:37Just kind of like he goes up?
24:40Yeah, we love it.
24:41I mean, he's broken clipboards along the way.
24:43He's gotten texts.
24:44He gets fiery.
24:47This morning, he gave – he was in his bag in terms of his speech.
24:51He gave in our pregame meeting this morning.
24:54And you could tell, like, he still has that fastball if he needs it.
25:00And it's important for us to have that energy, you know,
25:05over the course of 82.
25:06Like, we're all in this fight together.
25:09I think he talked about that this morning.
25:11He showed it out there.
25:13And whether you win or lose, like, you just want to have a unit
25:17and a team that's together, coaches included.
25:20What was unique about his pregame speech?
25:23Or was it a shoot-around?
25:25I've never heard him – well, I shouldn't say never.
25:27He rarely talks about his Chicago days.
25:31And he gave some references to, you know, how they approached their team
25:41and their identity by comparisons to, like, how a band comes together
25:46and everybody playing a role.
25:47You got your lead singers.
25:49You got your bass, your acoustic, your electric, whatever.
25:53You got your drummers.
25:54You got the stage hands.
25:56You got the guy that's plugging in the speakers.
25:58He said he was just above plugging in the speakers guy.
26:02But it speaks to, like, it all matters.
26:04There's value in all of that when a band's going on a tour.
26:09And I think Phil Jackson instilled that in him,
26:13and he used that as a reference for how we need to play
26:16and how we need to approach our identity.
26:18It's going to take a long time to get through this year in terms of doing that,
26:22but it's great to have a reference.
26:23This is a band.
26:26Oh, you're going to click deeper now.
26:27Where are we going?
26:28What role of person are you in the band?
26:35In other words, you're amazing.
26:38What are you talking about?
26:39You're going to be.
26:40What are you –
26:41We're talking about the lead singer of a band.
26:43What band are we putting you at the front of?
26:47That's hilarious.
26:48I don't – depends on the night.
26:51All right, tonight.
26:54I'll have a good reference for you.
26:56I'm – I was Haley Williams in Paramore tonight.
27:00That's pretty good.
27:02He's not bad.
27:03He's not bad.
27:04Wimby's not bad either.
27:05What a battle between, you know, a guy who's been doing this for a long time
27:13and continues to amaze at 37 and a young guy over there,
27:21and he just destroys everything defensively.
27:24It's just so hard to get an easy basket.
27:26Every time you think you're free, he just comes out of nowhere
27:30and blocks a shot or gets in the way.
27:32And that was an incredible basketball game, high-level competition.
27:38I thought the Spurs' defense was fantastic.
27:41They came out, obviously, after the other night when we were flowing
27:44and really moving the ball.
27:47They bottled us up pretty well,
27:48but really proud of our guys for sticking with it.
27:52Were you having Paris flashbacks at the end there?
27:55Actually, I wasn't, but, yeah, I mean, I still think about that photo of Steph,
28:05you know, with Wimby running at him in Paris.
28:08I've got to get that photo copied and put it in my house somewhere.
28:12But, yeah, it's pretty remarkable watching Wimby play,
28:16just to see the versatility, the poise, everything he does to impact the game.
28:23He's a remarkable player.
28:25You played, Steph, 36 minutes tonight, I think the entire third.
28:29You mentioned you guys were kind of getting bottled up.
28:30How much did it just feel like he was the offense tonight?
28:34Yeah, I mean, we ended up with 18 assists,
28:36and we were trying to move the ball.
28:39I thought the intentions were great,
28:41but they were, again, super physical, and Wimby was everywhere.
28:45We just couldn't really get our offense going
28:48and felt like we were going to have to ride him, you know, a few extra minutes.
28:55And we didn't plan on playing him the whole third.
28:59I tried to take him out with about two minutes left,
29:02but there was no stoppage in play, and he played the last eight.
29:06But you can see the difference, you know, in his rhythm, his conditioning,
29:11you know, now after, you know, being out for a week.
29:14And I think in some ways that helped his legs,
29:17but he needed a couple games to get the conditioning and the rhythm back.
29:21But, yeah, that was an incredible performance.
29:24How important is it to see the response from this team,
29:27these back-to-back games after the loss in OKC
29:29against another great team like the Spurs?
29:31Yeah, it was just a fantastic, you know,
29:35two victories over a hell of a team on their home floor, you know,
29:41coming off that stretch where we were really struggling.
29:44So really proud of the team and excited about where we are
29:50and where this is going as we look forward.
29:54But we're only halfway through the trip, so we've got some tough games left.
29:58What did you make of Draymond's defense tonight?
29:59He did everything he possibly could.
30:03Draymond is always going to battle.
30:04He's one of the great competitors I've ever been around.
30:07And, obviously, you know, he was getting pretty emotional out there.
30:12It was a battle.
30:13And, you know, he got the fifth foul, and we took him out.
30:18And then, you know, Al came in, did a really good job.
30:22Draymond came to me at the timeout at three minutes, and he said,
30:26hey, if that group's rolling, you want to stay with them, stay with them.
30:29And I felt that way.
30:31And I think I played Al, you know, a couple more possessions.
30:34And then when they scored, like, I have to get Draymond back in the game.
30:39And, you know, the way he closed it, beautiful assist to Steph on the out-of-bounds play.
30:44And then, you know, defensively just doing what he does, that was really impressive.
30:49And, Steve, when Draymond is, like, out of his mind and very emotional,
30:55is it better to talk to him or just leave him alone?
30:58No, no, he can't hear me when he's like that.
31:02But I was kind of out of my mind, too.
31:03I got a technical, too.
31:05And we were both pretty emotional during that stretch.
31:09And, you know, the team really did a great job of kind of staying calm and poised.
31:15And, you know, Steph just completely took over, you know, the whole second half.
31:20I mean, he was great in the first half, too.
31:22But you could tell he was just feeling it.
31:24And amazing to watch him play.
31:27Forced 20-plus turnovers.
31:29Yeah.
31:29How significant was this defensive effort as a collective?
31:31Yeah, I mean, it feels different when Gary is, you know,
31:37playing like he has the last couple games.
31:39And, you know, we're giving him those minutes to pressure the ball,
31:42but also to contribute, you know, to the overall defense.
31:46He's a brilliant defender.
31:48And, you know, he obviously hit a couple of huge threes.
31:51But I just think overall the defense has really stepped up the last couple games.
31:57But the offense has helped the defense by taking better care of the ball
32:02and having better possessions.
32:03Even though we struggled to make shots tonight, I liked our possessions.
32:08But they were so physical and we couldn't get past them.
32:12It felt like we had seven or eight possessions that went down to the last second
32:15of the shot clock.
32:17And we just couldn't do much with them other than Steph and Jimmy.
32:21So we kept going to those two, obviously.
32:25But even then, it was really tough.
32:27When Steph steps to the line with, you know, six seconds left, has to hit both,
32:33is any part of you, like, nervous or wondering if he might make them?
32:37I'm nervous, but I'm not wondering if he's going to make them or not.
32:40You know, I mean, it's obviously a game on the line.
32:43And, you know, for him to step up there and knock them down,
32:49I think everybody expects it.
32:50But we shouldn't take that for granted.
32:53You know, that's pressure time.
32:55And then he just calmly stepped up and knocked them down.
32:59And we all expected that.
33:00But that's just who he is.
33:03Between the intensity and the adjustments,
33:05did these two games feel like a mini-playoff series?
33:08Yeah, yeah, for sure.
33:09I mean, obviously, they're a rising, you know, young team, talented,
33:13well-coached, and really defensive-minded.
33:18I thought they came out with a really physical mindset tonight
33:23to take us out of our patterns and to try to put pressure on us.
33:26And they did it.
33:27They did a really good job of that.
33:29So it did feel like a playoff game, especially tonight.
33:32The other night, you know, it was a little different,
33:34a little looser, a little freer.
33:36And tonight felt more like the physicality of the playoffs.
33:40Aftersteps, go-ahead free throws,
33:42what were you expecting them to do on the final possession?
33:45Well, I thought they might go to Wembe and Yama.
33:48But, you know, Draymond with six seconds left
33:52and Draymond's physicality and his ability to get underneath Wembe,
33:59I understood why they went to Fox.
34:01I mean, he was having a great game.
34:03And there's enough time where he can attack and dribble.
34:08Moses and Gary executed the switch really well,
34:11and we forced a tough shot.
34:13Fodd's 10 points and three rebounds.
34:17Is this kind of, when you think of the ideal pods game,
34:19closing out the game in the fourth quarter,
34:21is this kind of what you envision?
34:22Yeah, these last two games he's been brilliant.
34:24And, you know, he's just, he's a little bit like Draymond
34:28in that what he does doesn't always end up reflected in the box score.
34:33You know, he, I thought his three was maybe the, you know,
34:37the shot of the game from the top of the key.
34:39It just kind of kept us right there.
34:40I think it cut it to one, if I'm not mistaken.
34:44Obviously, Steph hit everything.
34:45But BP's three, Gary's two threes, you know,
34:50guys stepping up to keep us in the game.
34:52But Brandon does so much out there.
34:54I thought he had another great game.
34:57Steve, hi, Don.
34:58We are from Argentina.
35:00We came here with Lionel Ginobili,
35:01because the sports center is celebrating 25 years in Spanish
35:04in Latin America.
35:06So you play with them.
35:07It should be good for you as a coach now.
35:11Would you like to have Manu Ginobili as a player in the Warriors?
35:15And if Manu plays, would?
35:17Would I like to have Manu Ginobili on my team?
35:19Yeah, that's my question.
35:20I'm sorry.
35:20Oh, my gosh.
35:22Would I?
35:22Would I ever?
35:24Yeah, Manu, you know, I played with him my last year,
35:29and it was his rookie year.
35:30And it was amazing watching him play,
35:33but also just who he was as a teammate.
35:38He meant so much to the locker room, just the chemistry,
35:41the camaraderie, the joy that he played with,
35:44the connection he had with the fans.
35:47And there's not a coach alive who wouldn't want to have Manu Ginobili
35:51on his team, just a brilliant, brilliant player.
35:54That should be nice.
35:55He and Gary together?
35:56That'd be a hell of a backcourt.
35:57That'd be pretty nice, yeah.
35:59Thank you so much.
36:00All right.
36:00Thanks, guys.
