2027 Kia Telluride Designer - Interview Berk Erner, Kia Design Center America
Transcript
00:00I feel one of the things that strike me the most is the body side character.
00:05I think it's very unique.
00:07I think it really represents our Opposites United design philosophy.
00:13And I think that's one of the main things.
00:15And I think the balance between luxury and ruggedness is another key in this design of Telluride.
00:23Opposites United is our design philosophy.
00:26Nothing in life is black or white.
00:28It's kind of a scale in between.
00:31And as designers, we take inspiration from these opposing elements.
00:37And then just like a successful chef, we put them together into one recipe.
00:42Just like a chef uses spicy and sweet flavors together,
00:46we might use opposing concepts to come up with a unique and flavorful design for our products.
00:53Well, yes, it was very important to keep the boxy shape of the Telluride for this generation as well.
00:59I think the big, bold and boxy profile of the first generation Telluride struck a chord with our customers.
01:06So moving forward for the second generation, we wanted to keep the upright silhouette and the boxy design.
01:12Well, the facets of a diamond found its way into a design because kind of going back to our Opposites United design philosophy,
01:21I felt that diamonds were, while they're hard, industrious, they're indestructible, very hard.
01:27But at the same time, it appeals to our emotions.
01:29It's something that we give for things, for people that we care about.
01:34So that duality was the key and the diamond inspiration.
01:39And yeah, basically those diamond shapes coming out of the fenders,
01:45blending into a smooth body shape was how we express our Opposites United.
01:49Well, especially with the X-Prov, we have these certain cues that really give it away,
01:55such as like the recovery tow hooks.
01:58And we already had this off-road-y nature of the vehicle.
02:02We just dialed it up to 11 on the X-Pro and basically things were already there.
02:09We just cranked it up a little bit more for the X-Pro version.
