Zellweger vs Leatherface! Janet Leigh vs rabbits! Tom Hanks and Jennifer Aniston vs their agents!
Transcript
00:00By the very nature of the industry, many a major movie star has a dud or two hidden in
00:05their closets. While some choose to embrace those stinkers, others will do their absolute
00:10best to forget that these films ever, ever happened, totally distancing themselves or
00:15outright just refusing to even acknowledge a project. And that's what the focus is on here.
00:20So with that in mind, I'm Andrew from WhatCultureHorror, and here are 11 horror movies
00:23so bad actors completely disown them.
00:26Number 11, Catherine Isabelle, Freddy vs. Jason A major horror favourite due to the
00:31likes of American Mary and the Ginger Snaps franchise, one picture Catherine Isabelle
00:35does not have fond memories of is Freddy vs. Jason. Having been promised by director Ronnie Yu there
00:40would be zero nudity required for her role as Gibb Smith, Isabelle was left angry when
00:45she arrived on set, only to be informed she'd be getting naked for a shower scene, which in turn
00:50caused an argument between Catherine Isabelle and Ronnie Yu. Yes, her body double was eventually
00:55used for this sequence, but the relationship between the pair never recovered, with Isabelle
01:00later saying how she expected more from that movie.
01:02Number 10, Dennis Hopper, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
01:06I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, with its blend of dark comedy, satire and genuine terror
01:12ticking plentiful boxes for many a horror fan. One person who reportedly did not love Texas Chainsaw
01:18Massacre 2 though, was Dennis Hopper. Well, that's not entirely true, for the legendary EZ
01:22Rider star, seemed to enjoy some of the filming of Toby Hooper's sequel, even celebrating his 50th
01:27birthday on set by cutting his cake with a chainsaw. However, the main reason Dennis Hopper took the
01:33Austin, Texas based gig was basically so that he could play golf at Willie Nelson's golf range in
01:38nearby Springfield, Texas. Once Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 was released, Hopper was never shy of
01:44trashing both the film and his character of Lefty Emright.
01:48Number 9, Rennie Zellweger, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Next Generation
01:52Sticking with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre theme, it took Rennie Zellweger over 20 years to even
01:58acknowledge that one of her early career roles came in the fourth Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie.
02:02While fellow fresh-faced newcomer Matthew McConaughey has always laughed about his performance
02:07in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4, and poked fun at himself for that, Zellweger refused to talk about
02:12the film until 2016, a whopping 21 years since the film's 1995 release. In terms of what she said
02:20about The Next Generation at that time, Zellweger lambasted the ridiculous kamikaze filming that she
02:26also questioned whether was even legal. Number 8, Eddie Murphy, Vampire in Brooklyn
02:31Initially labelled a total dud at the time of its release, Wes Craven's Eddie Murphy starring Vampire
02:36in Brooklyn has been somewhat reappraised in more recent years, becoming a low-key cult classic that's
02:41praised for the electric chemistry between Murphy and the ever-great Angela Bassett. For Eddie,
02:46he's totally disowned the film though, complaining how the wig his character wore totally ruined his
02:51performance, and also being a little unhappy with shots taken at the film on Saturday Night Live.
02:56Thankfully for Eddie Murphy, the following year saw him bounce back in spectacular fashion
03:00with the nutty Professor, while director Wes Craven, yeah, he followed Vampire in Brooklyn
03:05up with the absolute game-changer that was Scream.
03:08Number 7, Paul Rudd, Halloween, The Curse of Michael Myers
03:12If looking for positives from The Curse of Michael Myers, Donald Pleasance gets to spend a good amount
03:17of time going full crazy Donald Pleasance. Plus, his Sam Loomis character, he's got a pretty sweet
03:23beard this time around. Other than that, yeah, this is a properly ropey Halloween entry, and one that was
03:29butchered in the editing suite following initial test audience reactions. Of course, this sixth Halloween
03:34movie is noteworthy for featuring Paul Rudd in only the second movie role of his career, though Rudd has
03:40subsequently stated how he's embarrassed by the film and by his performance as Tommy Doyle. Also,
03:45he was critical that the original script was effectively tore up and didn't make it to cinema screens.
03:50Number 6, Tom Hanks, He Knows You're Alone
03:521980's He Knows You're Alone is a totally unspectacular slasher, whose one claim to fame is an
03:58extremely minor role for future A-lister Tom Hanks. Speaking about the movie, during an appearance
04:04on Letterman years later, Hanks slammed the film, mocking its various working titles,
04:09jokingly calling it an epic hack and slash film from 800 years ago and saying he played
04:15a guy who had nothing to do with anything, which is pretty accurate to be honest. And the more Tom
04:19Hanks described his experience on He Knows You're Alone, the more this rant just turned into comedic.
04:25Number 5, Janet Leigh, Night of the Leapers
04:28Forever immortalised in horror history for playing Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho,
04:33one less memorable role for the legendary Janet Leigh came in 1972's Night of the Leapers, a movie
04:40about murderous giant rabbits. Yes, that is a thing. In the time after Night of the Leaps' release,
04:45Leigh said how embarrassed she was by her involvement in the film, admitting that she only took the role in
04:50this low budget horror because it was shooting near her home and it had allowed her to spend more time
04:54with her family. To be fair, Janet Leigh choosing work based on the fact it would give her more
04:58family time? That's pretty great. Night of the Leapers though? Yeah, not so great.
05:02Number 4, Mia Kunis, American Psycho 2
05:06A sequel to Mary Harron's brilliant 2000 adaptation of American Psycho in name only,
05:11the entirely unrelated directed DVD American Psycho 2 was disowned upon this release by
05:17embarrassed author Bret Easton Ellis and star Mia Kunis. Kunis plays Rachel, a murderous college
05:22student who's shown killing Patrick Bateman in the film's opening moments. Over the years,
05:26Kunis has talked several times about how awful this movie is, and it is, it's really, really bad,
05:32how embarrassed she is by it and that this was never meant to even be an American Psycho sequel.
05:37Instead, this was a different project that was re-edited and had the American Psycho 2,
05:42a title, put on it. And when rumours of American Psycho 3 started up in 2005-ish, Mia Kunis pleaded with
05:48people to put a petition together to stop the film from becoming a thing, and thankfully it never
05:53did. Number 3, Jennifer Aniston, Leprechaun
05:56Friend star Jennifer Aniston has enjoyed an impressive, storied career with many blockbusters
06:01and indie hits alike to her name. And amongst those early credits, there's 1993's Leprechaun,
06:07where Aniston plays final girl, Tori Redding, opposite Warwick Davis' titular villain. While that
06:12first Leprechaun does have its fair share of fans, as to a lesser extent there's a general mixed bag that
06:18is the Leprechaun franchise, one person who is not a fan of that first film is Jennifer Aniston.
06:23During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show years later, Aniston even admitted how she squirmed
06:28through two hours of pure embarrassment, as she put it, when ex-husband Justin Theroux
06:32stumbled across the movie on TV. Still, it could have been worse. She could have appeared in
06:36Leprechaun in Space, or Leprechaun in Da Hood, or Leprechaun back to Da Hood. They're really bad.
06:41Number 2, Christopher Lee, Funny Man
06:44Icons of film don't get much more iconic than Sir Christopher Lee, the dearly, dearly missed Sir
06:49Christopher Lee. And one film the legendary actor would prefer we all forget about is 1994's
06:55atrociously unfunny and disastrously unscary Funny Man, which tells the tale of a demonic jester who
07:02terrorises a mansion recently won in a poker game from Christopher Lee's character. Of the many,
07:07many roles in Christopher Lee's vast career, this is the one he most distanced himself from,
07:12being particularly unhappy with how he was featured so prominently in the Funny Man advertising push,
07:16despite only having a minor, fairly unsubstantial role in the film. But then again,
07:21if you're an awful movie that has a cast of relatively unknown actors, it does kind of make
07:25sense that you want to go big in utilising the star power of Christopher Lee to get people's attention.
07:30Number 1, Jamie Lee Curtis, Prom Night, and Halloween Resurrection, and Virus.
07:35Much like her psycho star mother, horror legend Jamie Lee Curtis has one of the genre's most iconic
07:41characters to her name. That being her role as Laurie Strold in John Carpenter's Halloween,
07:46a role that she later revisited in Halloween 2, Halloween H20, Halloween Resurrection,
07:50and David Gordon Green's more recent opinion-splitting Halloween trilogy. However,
07:55one horror offering Jamie Lee Curtis is not so fond of is 1998's big budget space set Virus,
08:02which is simply labelled as shit, and only suitable for bad movie nights. Not just that,
08:06but Jamie Lee has also dissed 1980's Prom Night, which itself is a strong fanbase,
08:10and has thrown plenty of shade at Halloween Resurrection over the years,
08:14noting how she only did that movie on the basis that she was under contract,
08:17and on the understanding that Laurie Strold would be killed off in the opening act.
