00:00Is Brussels set to criminalise cash?

00:06The EU is looking to make cash transactions which surpassed 10,000 euros illegal tender,

00:12effectively killing cash, according to a series of social media posts like these ones.

00:16So let's verify what's really going on.

00:18Europe is introducing a block-wide limit on cash payments which exceed 10,000 euros

00:23in transactions between private individuals and businesses.

00:26These measures are part of a sweeping overhaul aiming to clamp down on money laundering,

00:31which is set to come into force in 2027.

00:34According to the EU, money laundering threatens the integrity of the bloc's economy,

00:38as well as the security of citizens.

00:40Sales brokered between two private individuals will generally be excluded from these new legal provisions.

00:45According to this viral post, the EU is making buying a car in cash a crime.

00:50This is half true.

00:51From 2027, buying a car in cash is not automatically a crime,

00:55but it could be an illegal transaction depending on who you buy it from and how much it costs.

01:00For example, if you're looking to buy a car which costs more than 10,000 euros from a dealership

01:05rather than from another individual, the business will not be allowed to accept that amount in cash.

01:10You could, however, still buy the car through a bank transfer or with a bank card.

01:15Although a 10,000 euro limit will be implemented,

01:18EU member states are free to introduce stricter national limits on cash transactions

01:22between a business and a private individual.

01:24Ultimately, Europeans will still be able to save, hold and withdraw any cash amount they like.

01:30So no, the EU is not killing cash.

01:32Although criticism of the package has been sensationalised online,

01:36the package itself is not without controversy.

01:38Experts have questioned whether imposing the cash limit is actually effective

01:42or whether it risks criminals simply shifting to other methods,

01:46such as crypto and cross-border movement.
