A moving funeral service was held at Washington National Cathedral to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, the world-renowned conservationist, primatologist, and UN Messenger of Peace. Friends, family, and environmental leaders gathered to celebrate her extraordinary contributions to wildlife protection and environmental advocacy.

Among those delivering tributes were Anna Rathmann, Executive Director of the Jane Goodall Institute, and actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, who both reflected on Goodall’s profound influence on global conservation. Rathmann described Goodall as “a visionary who changed not just how we see chimpanzees, but how we see ourselves as part of nature.” She added, “Her message was simple and urgent — that every individual can make a difference.”

00:00Jane was never the loudest in the room, in fact quite the opposite, but her powerful
00:29message spoke volumes. Of Jane's many superpowers, one that made her both successful as an ethologist
00:39and as an advocate was her ability to carry a quiet and comforting presence, one that when paired
00:49with her witty charisma would disarm the staunchest opponents. She reached across the
00:58chasms that divided people from other animals and across the chasms that divide all of us.
01:09Jane was always firm in her beliefs but never unfeeling in others' views. She was always direct
01:17but never aggressive, always kind but never contentious. She treated all beings on earth
01:23with a civility and respect.
01:37Jane's work is not done. It is now up to each of us to carry her mission, her light,
01:54and her legacy forward for generations to come. Because together we can, together we will,
02:04and together we must. Thank you.
02:18When most of us think about environmental issues, we tend to dwell on destruction and loss.
02:34And I'll admit it's something I've always struggled with myself, but Jane led with hope, always.
02:42She never lingered in despair. She focused on what could be done. She reminded us that change begins
02:51with compassion and that our humanity is our greatest tool. Yes, she could be clear-eyed, even blunt,
03:01about the greed and relentless consumption of our species. But beneath that fierce honesty was an
03:10unwavering, unwavering faith that every voice matters, that we are all connected to the living world,
03:17and that each of us can make a difference. Most people knew her as Jane Goodall, the icon,
03:25the legend. But the Jane I was fortunate enough to get to know was gentle, curious, funny, witty,
03:34and absolutely unstoppable.
