00:00make them i am scared they're trying to kick me out of the band break them
00:05whoa it can be very frustrating i do just kind of want to walk out it could take them to the
00:11very top this is made in korea i love you korea
00:17at the end of 2023 a uk search for raw undiscovered talent began auditions focused on dancing
00:31singing and personality five boys were chosen the last performance now give it your all
00:37they are reese james dexter blaze and ollie the aim was to create a new k-pop inspired british super
00:49group we're looking for a boy band that can take over the world k-pop first out of south korea in
00:55the early 1990s and changed the music landscape forever it's a hybrid ranging from pop to rmb to
01:04hip-hop to rock to edm it's also a very visual genre fancy outfits highly choreographed national teams
01:13it's now become a global phenomenon in 2023 six of the top 20 best-selling artists in the world
01:22were k-pop and 90 billion streams were by k-pop idols blackpink have been awarded mbes by king charles
01:29espos sold out the o2 17 of taking glastonbury by storm and one of the biggest k-pop festivals is sm town
01:40with 120 000 fans that is the boys first stop on their k-pop adventure
01:46we left here fro it was rainy gray and cold and we got on a plane 14 hours later it was just like boom
02:00here you are
02:07i don't think i realized how upscale and how big it is absolutely mental it was amazing i think that was
02:14our first place where we went okay we can see what we're getting ourselves into
02:21there are about 200 million fans worldwide and the industry is estimated to be worth five billion dollars
02:31i think we'll be on a growth trail i think for the next seven eight years hopefully more so
02:36it was mind-blowing the vocals were flawless the dance moves were precise the performance was just
02:52incredible it sort of set the buyer very very high standard
02:55we went backstage to get some tips from some of the k-pop idols who had performed starting with the
03:04incredible prize we'll do our official greeting go
03:13we don't have one we don't have one yet how did you come up with rise as your name our name is kind of
03:21like a combination of the words rise and realize and we kind of have like a team bottle sort of like to
03:30rise and realize our dreams in a way oh nice yeah it's cool
03:34and then the legendary tan from waving came to see us so what was your first experience performing at
03:44like sm town i'm very nervous at first and then with the year after i debuted i become more like
03:51comfortable like on stage so it gets like easier as you go on yes you learn the tips and the tricks
03:57after like you perform like one after another so i feel like you learn along the way yeah
04:04definitely one of the most full-scale concerts i've seen in a while
04:15i'll put it next to taylor sweat huge huge it was amazing
04:29as we came out we met some fans even though you know we didn't even know it was possible to have
04:34fans before we'd even really started
04:40made i'd say probably all five of us very happy
04:46that was amazing we've met one of our first fans what can we say
04:49on the drive to the house we actually got to uh see soul on the way through it was like something
05:02out of a batman movie
05:03the lights were just insane there's so much life in the city it's amazing but it was also quite
05:15daunting because i haven't actually lived this far away from home before during the time in korea the
05:21boys will be living together in the fashionable soul district of ittawan
05:28okay here we go oh my look in the kitchen
05:33yo oh my god yo wow i think i know which room i want already
05:39the house is so sick downstairs we've got like games room mirrors so we can practice our dances
05:49i'm on the next level
05:54hi i'm dexter i'm 22. i've been a performer ever since i was a little kid and i've been dreaming about
06:00doing something like this that's such a cute room so i want this one i can't lie i would say i'm an
06:05attention seeker but when i'm performing i definitely want everyone to look at me yeah
06:09i mean who doesn't love loads of people applauding you
06:15it's just fun
06:19ah do you remember this one i was just so proud of you this is how i'd like you to dress all the time
06:25i love the like tank top with the smart trousers whilst in south korea i'll probably miss my mom
06:31the most i see her every day in london you know i live with her spending my time with her so it
06:35would definitely be hard but it's worth it
06:41let me show you how to go what is that wait is that actually someone at the door just looking around
06:46the house and the doorbell rang and a lovely lady arrived called joy our translator and she was
06:51going to tell us what was going to be happening over the next 100 days every week you guys are
06:55going to prepare a performance different performance every week and you guys will be
06:58evaluated by hijun the head of training and every trainee goes through her but i do have to let you
07:05know that it's not guaranteed that everyone's going to be there at the end of the program
07:10not everybody makes it through the program
07:14yeah wait we're not going to make it is this one that's going to be caught
07:19well i can't really say much because he's just going to be in charge of evaluating you guys
07:23you guys are going to meet her at the end of the week for your first evaluation
07:27what she said about not all of us will make it i'm not feeling too great wait one of us one of us
07:35we could all be cut blaze definitely took the news the hardest but that is the business at the end of
07:40the day you know if you if you can't keep up you get cut and that's that's how the industry works
07:44indeed it does the first thing any boy band needs is a sound
07:52sm entertainment believe this song will work for them speaking body like we're selling for
07:57understand can you feel the vibes and this is the choreography they'll be learning to accompany the song
08:05okay let's go five six
08:14k-pop is technically difficult as the choreography needs to be in perfect unison
08:19teaching them the skills to achieve this is sungchan park
08:22oh that's hot yeah absolutely honestly i'm i am slow at picking up choreo and tum tum done
08:37i'm james i'm 23 i'm from huddisfield in the uk around sheep and cows let me try that one again let me run that one around
08:45i have a twin brother called lewis we post dance videos online and we've created our own dance
08:51trends i think standing now on our main page we have 5.6 million followers
08:58this opportunity is huge i want to learn that's what i want to do i want to learn i want to soak up
09:04everything i can can you feel my room for me it's my main discipline which means i can really really
09:13appreciate the sort of intricacies of the movement five and six and seven and eight
09:25i'm not super good at picking up dance i come from all like a singing modeling background
09:30one more time sorry
09:33yeah you got it you got it okay yeah um we'll see step and slide off roll and roll kick
09:43two two two two clap right from the start i found the choreo tough freestyling is my forte because i
09:50struggle to follow direction i'm very do things on my own kind of a guy 일단 개인 개인적인
09:55feedback we go we got is a team is a new group inica to come detail a little bit bad for our
10:07choreographer on the first training day i don't think he really worked with a group of boys like us
10:12before our coordination wasn't wasn't great it's about looking like a team and looking the same so you
10:18have a bit different flavors it's definitely hard um i'm gonna have to put in the work but yeah it's fun
10:25hi i'm ollie i'm 20 years old and i'm from sunderland i went to school in darren cathedral
10:32so i sung in the choir there i've always grown up with just my mom my nana my grandad
10:37look after yourself right now i know that this is your dream yeah you know you'll work hard i think
10:42performing was passed on to me for my mom she used to do a lot of modeling when she was younger and
10:47dancing and you know that we're both gonna miss you like so much everything all of her acted in
10:54sang danced i was all i'm not bragging but he's good looking you know and i'm so proud of you
11:02always remember that little darling come here
11:09between rehearsals the boys have taken the opportunity to go out and about around
11:13souls to experience the unique world of k-pop culture
11:16the tour guide is local legend the k-pop cowboy
11:32the k-pop cowboy is a street interviewer hi i have a question do you guys like k-pop content creator
11:53and all-round k-pop enthusiast so for the tour today we're gonna check out some interesting k-pop spots
12:00so now i'm taking you to gangnam style statue what gangnam style a song about the hipster area of soul
12:08was a global hit for k-pop icon psy in 2012. first you know just like the statue and then go

12:26also in the gangnam district is soul's answer to the hollywood walk of fame the wall of hands
12:34since you guys are here we can maybe make a wish i wish that we get our hands on one of these walls
12:43i can see it you see that gap just there let's go three two one there we are okay now let's go to
12:51another spot in korea photo booths are a cultural phenomenon fueled by k-pop that works that works yeah
13:05fans have limited opportunities to take photos with k-pop idols
13:09so photo booths are the only way to get a snap with their favorite stuff
13:13nice nice nice nice nice nice everywhere you look at a soul there are these photo booths the people
13:18here love them it's like a massive social thing it's a trend worth millions and thousands of booths have
13:24opened across south korea in the last 10 years
13:30across town in young goo is hiker an interactive experience that allows fans to make their own k-pop videos
13:37i'm gonna make you guys do a dance challenge video you're gonna come up with the own dance moves
13:44okay so i'm gonna set you guys into two teams okay how about this you one team
13:53and i'm gonna give you guys a couple of minutes to come up with the dance
13:56are you guys ready okay let's go i'm used to making dance videos with my brother pretty much every day
14:03so i was really excited to give these k-pop dance videos a go all right guys this is the subway room
14:11do you guys have like a team name yeah with it with the jolly joe's okay jolly joe's let's go
14:16okay let's go check out your dance moves then
14:43wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle irish dog
14:50all righty guys let's see your dance do you guys have like a team name of course we do
14:55oh what is it oh okay let's see what you got guys yeah
15:02oh
15:10oh
15:12oh
15:14oh
15:16oh
15:18oh
15:20oh
15:22Oh
15:34Okay guys, I have to say that was very impressive. I love the dances. I'm gonna
15:40raise the hand the winner for this dance challenge is
15:43I'm a very competitive person so winning a dance challenge in the first week as a cleanup crew was a very nice thing to happen
15:57I feel like it was deserved. I was gutted. I was I was absolutely gutted
16:05But the boys break from training is short-lived over the next few days their rehearsals become even more intense
16:13Boom boom boom up
16:17Being a trainee is basically a full-time job and the only time you're not training is when you're sleeping
16:26I have never been so tired in my life. This was absolutely relentless
16:30drop it
16:33But despite their hard work, they're still struggling to crack the choreo
16:38Oh
16:42Only you go on to get to liquor step step
16:48No
16:50God you go kick step step counter got one and two that's the count one and two one and
16:59Two okay, well, so that's right as Ollie struggles in the dance studio
17:04Reese is struggling in the vocal room with coach women done
17:09Wait for the energy when we go
17:13Together is the way we move in the night is
17:17Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, it's gonna. What's all of them?
17:22You're cool. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
17:34You know your way for the propia
17:36You think you're 10
17:40I
17:40All the ladies all you like
17:44You're kind of looking good, you's not you's kind, you're cute
17:49You're cute, you're cute
17:51You're kind of like that kind of song
17:53And I want you to sing that song
17:55OK, OK
17:57OK, OK
17:59What are you doing?
18:01What are you doing?
18:03What are you doing?
18:05You're shy right now.
18:07The wave of the energy when we go all in.
18:09What are you doing?
18:11Smile, smile.
18:13The wave of the energy when we go all in.
18:15It feels different, yeah.
18:19I became a performer from the age of four or five.
18:22Oh, look at you there, Rhys.
18:24Oh, I look actually quite cool.
18:26I wouldn't go that far.
18:28When I perform, I feel like I can properly be me.
18:34Throughout my school life, I've always had a little bit of,
18:37you know, the haters' comments or it made me carry on
18:40and keep pushing to get where I want to be today.
18:44I've been a cruise ship dancer for the last eight months,
18:47but a boy band's always been a dream of mine.
18:50Wave of the energy when we go all in.
18:53K-pop is one of the biggest industries now in the world.
18:56The fame, the lifestyle is, you know, crazy good.
19:00So for us, you know, five lads coming out of college
19:03into this extraordinary experience is, you know, once in a lifetime,
19:07and it is amazing.
19:08With just days to go until their evaluation, the band are still failing to dance in unison.
19:25All right.
19:26Yeah, all right.
19:27My bad.
19:28It's okay.
19:33Oh, my God!
19:34Hey!
19:35It's bad.
19:42Does that mean very bad?
19:44Yeah.
19:49I feel a little bit stressed.
19:52It's not, like, perfect and perfectly down.
19:54Still making stupid mistakes.
19:56Eight and one and two and one and two.
20:00Okay.
20:01Synchronization can be very challenging.
20:03Good communication is really crucial,
20:05and you really need to remember that you're working as a part of a team,
20:10and that just comes from experience and practicing together.
20:15After a tough few days of training,
20:17the boys are being given a night off to have a night in.
20:20Hello.
20:21With Shin Dong from K-pop group Super Junior.
20:25He's been performing at the very top for 20 years.
20:33And tonight, he's given these new trainees a lesson in Korean culture.
20:38So, I'm prepared for Korean culture.
20:43Do you know my girl?

22:39We are one team
22:40I will know what I'm doing
22:44I will know what I'm doing
22:47Let's go out there
22:50We have a really good first beat of beginners
22:55Go go, set up
22:59Hey
23:00fragen
23:01Oliver
23:02Yes
23:03Wait
23:04Wait
23:05Wait
23:07Na na na na na na na you
23:14You know that very simple, yeah, I did feel like I was holding the boys up a little bit in the first week
23:20They're all such really good dancers, and I just wasn't at that standard. But I really wanted to be so I knew I had to put a lot of work
23:30While Oli drills down on the details blaze has been called into vocal training
23:37I'm blaze and I am 19. I first started performing when I was about seven
23:51you know very serious my mom always say I was really talented at a young age I don't think I
24:00was I could not sing when I was younger I could not dance either audition for the British school
24:06I went there from age 14 to 18 and I loved like every second of it this is my dream to be
24:16performing on on massive stages in front of massive audiences I'm expecting a lot of long
24:22hours from the training the standards are going to be like very very high which is slightly daunting
24:29but very exciting when you know you guys you know you know that's not a no pass or else
24:35to get you know that I'm a she do you know what I'm so big sorry now that blaze is quite a low
24:40speaking voice so I'd say he's more of a bariton but the k-pop songs have quite a high vocal
24:49can you feel the vibes can can you feel the vibes okay
24:59with some band members struggling with the different aspects of k-pop training wellness
25:07coach Jeannie Chang has been brought in to help them cope with the daily emotional and mental
25:12challenges hello hello hi guys so excited to meet you I'm here to check up on you guys
25:20just to make sure you're doing good you know so how was your first week how's it been um
25:25it's been really good it's been very intense and you say that with a smile yeah well okay
25:29you know it's been in a good way because I mean we're training with like the best people it's a
25:34little mind-blowing training in sm they're working with like the biggest names in k-pop and i'm like
25:39oh wow like yeah it's kind of crazy okay it's also like they ask us what our favorite like k-pop
25:45oh of course they're gonna ask that and we say something and they're like oh yeah they're my
25:48student it's just like so casual so who's your favorite i'm just curious i i i like as well
25:54so good ollie look ollie loves that i do like us i mean i'm looking forward to seeing how good we
26:00get and like what sm are going to create us into yeah we're already really good but just becoming that
26:07like so slick and sick how are you guys getting along yeah good i think we've all become really close
26:13because of how intense the training has been of course we're all gonna have to have each of us
26:18back because sometimes like for me example like i'm not getting a move and i'm a little slower at
26:23choreo and these boys are like you're right man oh to me that's really important because you guys have
26:28to lean on each other you know that's the whole k-pop thing the group mentality on that note i guess i
26:33want to know do you guys know each other's strengths or your favorite things about each other
26:37reese he's got the most amazing voice you are such a handsome man he goes about life as if he's in
26:44a photo shoot let's talk about blaze he's a little quieter here blaze i'd say is our little dancer um
26:54from day one the little's just unnecessary i think just calling me a dancer is nice i like the way he
27:00scratches his hair yeah yeah okay is that gonna be the signature look yeah look at that wow yeah
27:07okay let's talk about james james is very mature and he's also a very very kind person and an amazing
27:14dancer and singer what do you enjoy about me what do you enjoy about him oh he's got the best laugh
27:18you've got a really beautiful sun shiny energy about you dexter thank you james but that's great so he
27:23radiates he has a great laugh yeah okay that's awesome let's go to ollie ollie tries hard always um
27:34so i was gonna go on to say yeah he doesn't call himself a dancer you don't call yourself a dancer
27:39no no no you know i've danced for a long time but i just don't have the connection in my body i'll just
27:45say i admire how he's not afraid to put himself out of his comfort zone yeah like if that was me i would
27:51be i'm very uncomfortable i'll be i'll be stressing okay so you have your assessment okay yeah so
27:58what's that gonna be like feeling the pressure a little bit it's not easy to take criticism right
28:03or like feet like that feedback of like this isn't good i'm not intimidated i think we will be nervous
28:08when we actually go to do it i think that's normal we'll get real once we walk in
28:11evaluation is just a day away
28:26this is the last chance for the routine to be perfected with vocal coach jinyoung jen
28:30and everything appears to be in tune
28:41however
28:41can you feel the best oh can you feel feel blazing that
28:48지금 그 방금 feel at the tp go 조금 더 잡아줘야
28:50can you feel my position was horrible first was bad
28:56the first one can you feel the fuss we're looking towards tomorrow with performances we just need
29:01clean up vocals clean up dancing there's a little bit of a disconnect between the two i'd say at the
29:07moment we'll just get better let's just get better you wouldn't think we're fingers that's a shot
29:14we're a unit of five and so if anyone's struggling with one thing we're all struggling with that one thing
29:19every time you move a little move move a little
29:24tomorrow's going to be intense we've kind of just got to go in there and give everything we've got
29:31one week into their 100-day training regime and it all comes down to this yeah you nervous um
29:39a little bit boys it's good to be nervous there's definitely some no's there's some
29:44a lot of thinking of what ifs and everything obviously everyone is a little bit nervous but i think
29:48i'm a little bit intimidated i'm a little bit like no i think it'll be all right yeah we're
29:53gonna need it look all we can do is our very best put our all into it whatever we leave in that room
29:58is left in that room that's that i just want to get it done now yeah man the anticipation is killing me
30:08i know you're nervous yeah you're doing your your vocal warm-ups i mean i mean you're pacing me no i'm not
30:18no no no no i'm not nervous i'm excited i'm excited i'm not really that worried i think i'm pretty
30:29confident in all of our abilities heejun yoon has more than 20 years experience creating and nurturing
30:40some of k-pop's biggest stars
30:44she has unbelievably high standards and any who fail to meet them risk being cut from training
30:59you
31:02i'll just look at it right now
31:05go boys
31:06i'm too
31:07i'm too
31:09i can feel my heart see sparks when i'm with you
31:27with you. I feel it in my soul, yeah, you know what we gotta do. Your labyrinth's so bright,
31:36gotta put on shades. Baby, come along, watch me take it away. Somebody turn up louder to get down
31:49for an hour. Just you and me out on the floor. Let's go a little longer. It's getting stronger,
31:59and stronger, and stronger. Can you feel the vibe? Every time you move a little closer
32:05than me. You're running through your body like electricity. You see the air in every way
32:10you're into the beat. Can you feel the vibe? I'm shaking, I'm shaking, I'm just making
32:15me next. So come on, overcome it, won't you give me a hand? Speaking about a language
32:19that you won't understand. Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the
32:31wave of the energy when we all live? Together is the way we move when the night is lit, lit.
32:40Somebody turn up louder to get down for an hour. Just you and me out on the floor. Let's go a little
32:52longer. It's getting stronger, and stronger, and stronger. Can you feel the vibe? Every time
33:01you move a little closer than me. You're running through your body like electricity. You see the air
33:06in every way you're in every way you're into the beat. Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel
33:13the vibe? Can you feel the vibe? Let's go a little longer. It's getting stronger, and stronger,
33:25and stronger. Can you feel the vibe? Every time you move a little closer than me. You're running through your body
33:33like electricity. It's in the air in every way you're into the beat. Can you feel the vibe?
33:40Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe?
33:56Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe? Can you feel the vibe?
34:28Today's performance was that I thought it was so good.
34:35I think it's going to be a good score for sure.
34:47I think it's going to be a good score for 100.
34:49I think it's going to be a good score for 100.
34:52I think it's going to be a good score.
34:56I guess 65, I know I could have given more and cleaner with everything.
35:05For me, I think it would be like 35, 40.
35:11About 70%, 65 to 70%, I'd say.
35:20I would say about 70%.
35:27I'd say 50.
35:29I think I got the base of it down.
35:31There's a lot of details and things to make sure it's all perfect,
35:34but I missed out.
35:42It's very worried.
35:46The more worried is the point that you think of yourself.
35:51Do you think you can be a singer?
35:53Like this?
35:58It's not going to happen.
35:59It's not going to be a good score.
36:00What are you thinking?
36:01What are you thinking?
36:02What are you thinking?
36:03How do you think it's going to be?
36:05The passion.
36:07The passion.
36:08I think it's a good feeling.
36:14It's a good feeling.
36:18I can't understand that.
36:22I can't understand that.
36:27I don't understand that.
36:33I'm not sure how to do that.
36:38I'm not sure how to do that.
36:43But I'm not sure how to do it.
36:50I'm not sure how to do it.
37:02And you're singing this dance.
37:06It's just like the kids who are playing.
37:09I've never heard of this dance.
37:14I've never heard of this dance.
37:20I think it's too late.
37:23If I look at this dance,
37:27The next time I'll do this scene, I won't be able to see this scene.
37:38Did you understand?
37:39Yes, yes.
37:40No camera.
37:43Pijun has called an emergency meeting with the management team.
38:01That was horrifically negative.
38:14Yeah.
38:16I didn't think it was basic level choreo though.
38:19That was basic level here in Korea.
38:22I can only speak for myself, but that, like, got kind of real.
38:26The all-round feedback for us was that we were terrible.
38:31We got ripped into in there.
38:34We expected something like this, just not this brutal.
38:38I think we've all worked hard this week.
38:41I've seen us all working hard.
38:43I think if anyone took it harder than anyone today,
38:47it would probably be Blaze.
38:50The standard here is...
38:53You think the top standard in the UK, what that is?
38:56Yeah.
38:57Imagine that times, like, a thousand.
39:00We can walk away from this just knowing the standard
39:02and knowing how hard we have to work now.
39:05I don't know what to think of, like, what she said to me.
39:08What did you agree with?
39:09Well, that was the best thing and the best answer.
39:12Because I, like I said, I don't agree.
39:14So it's like...
39:16I genuinely wasn't expecting that today,
39:18mainly because, like, through college,
39:21like, in my training,
39:23I've always kind of been that guy in the back.
39:26I was never, you know, that front-centre guy
39:28that they loved and they thought was amazing.
39:30Don't put yourself down about it.
39:32In this situation, she said that you were the best in both aspects.
39:36Mm.
39:37In K-pop.
39:39I've got very different ideas of a performer and an artist
39:44than what is idolised here.
39:47From that, we can all gauge what it means,
39:52what she's looking for in a K-pop idol.
39:55I'm pretty confident in my perception of performance and abilities
40:00and I know that, at heart, I'm my own artist.
40:04Should we go back to what she said?
40:06She said you guys were terrible.
40:07No, what she says, even if you don't agree,
40:09like, what she says is fact.
40:10We're in her territory.
40:12Oh, she hates us.
40:13Oh, no.
40:1550 minutes later, Dawn and Russ from management return.
40:24Wow.
40:25Wow, yeah.
40:26Yeah.
40:27Yeah.
40:29Well, how did you think it went?
40:33Bad.
40:34Bad, yeah.
40:35Yeah.
40:36Yeah.
40:37I think that's been a reality check.
40:39Yeah, it was hard.
40:41We've got to go away, re-evaluate everything.
40:45The ultimate goal here is to impress Heejin.
40:50And one of her notes back to us was,
40:52I didn't go so hard because I didn't want to make them cry.
40:56And Blaise, look, she doesn't feel that you've listened enough to her today.
41:03She is so important that when you are asked or told something to do, you really take her on board.
41:09We're not going to sugarcoat anything because there's a lot at stake. There's a lot at stake here.
41:15Mediocrity doesn't cut it.
41:19Unless you're the best, they won't put their name to you.
41:25You have to try harder.
41:27Harder.
41:28Harder.
41:29Harder.
41:30Next time.
41:31Next time.
41:34So, musicians will enjoy dancing while I'm still going?
41:38I'm going to lose my chest so I won't play my song today.
41:41I won't make my words that I can make it easy for me.
41:48For me, this is terrifying.
41:50Five hundred school kids eyes on me.
41:55What have we got, bro? Is it tonsilitis?
41:57Totally, it's like, it's contagious.
41:59My big insecurity is that I'm not wanted here.
42:02I hear it and say,
42:02oh, right, but I don't think that's right.
42:06It's just the end.
42:07If you leave it like this,
42:08you don't have to do this until you come here.
42:20Let's do it.
