00:09confronting police at the campus gate. Police personnel had reportedly
00:20stopped students from entering the campus because of the ongoing protests
00:24over the delay in Senate elections. Harmanpreet Kaur, a second year student in the
00:32Anthropology Department at Punjab University, said she had just returned from home carrying
00:37her bag and hoping to get back to her hostel. Since October 28th of 2025, Punjab University
00:53has witnessed large-scale student protests, demanding the announcement of Senate elections
00:58and the preservation of the university's autonomy. The protests began after a now-withdrawn central
01:09government notification proposed to reduce the strength of the university's Senate and
01:13syndicate, a move many saw as an attempt to centralise control. The issue quickly snowballed
01:19into a political flashpoint with Punjab CM Bhagwanth Maan accusing the BJP of attacking
01:24Punjab's autonomy and opposition parties calling it a direct assault on federalism.
01:32On 10th November, the protests intensified when farmers joined in, breaking barricades at the
01:37Mohali-Chandigarh border and clashing with the police. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a Farmers
01:42Union Coalition, has since announced it will hold a rally in Chandigarh on November 26th in support
01:48of the students. Even after the centre withdrew the notification, students said they would
01:52continue their protests until the Senate elections due in 2024 are announced.
